  1. To clarify, I have no idea what I am doing with this, all I have is a hypothesis. It is that the bandit skins make no difference. Some of you think they do, and maybe they do. However, the data seems to indicate the killing is generally evenly spread with the vast majority doing it relatively rarely, with a relatively small number accounting for most of the kills. There is no difference between a fucking gyrator of an evil bandit and some dude who has no the fuck what he is doing and shot some guy. So my theory (and to say I know what I am doing here, well, that is quite a stretch) is that removing the bandit skins will really not cause that much discomfort. The people surviving are either: - Teamed up with real world mates - Trusting based on FAR MORE than skin (observation, gut feel, blind ignorance) - Lucky/Clueless So, what am I achieving with bandit skins? The only thing I can actually say they have achieved with certainty, is the odd bandit meme. The premise is a sound idea (subtle cues to a person's psychology) but that has not translated in game for some simple, and some fucking complex, reasons. Did the world end when lots of zombies came in? No. The Care Bears went back to Kingdom of Caring (I actually had to look that up on wikipedia) until 1.5.8, but essentially I don't think it was the doom and gloom that was proclaimed. By removing this, we make way for a much more interesting feature, one that I think we all can agree is useful and has it's place: the ability to craft/find/loot your own skin to wear.
  2. Also... ENOUGH ABOUT THE MAIN SERVER! Waiting for host, waiting for response.... requesting character data.... The main server isn't even breaking a sweat, fuckers. It's the local servers getting fucked because you guys keep DDoS'ing them. ArmA2 wasn't designed to have thousands of people trying to connect to one server by spamming the enter key.
  3. Let me reiterate a very key point I keep trying to make: You are the inhabitants of the world. I am the architect. You guys are going to decide how this world plays out. Don't compare this to other games and look for different balancing mechanics. This is an attempt at something different, it is an experiment. There is no balance, other than the balance you will put in. I will put in the features required for you to either destroy this world into mindless PVP, or create something else. Don't look to me for that balance, because I will not give you it. We started this in a particular way, we're going to finish in that way. Some of keep looking to me to provide you a structured experience, balanced. That's not what is happening here. I'm not looking at something realistic, that isn't possible. I'm aiming for authenticity to the extent possible, but I'm realistic about what can be achieved there. You guys keep saying I'm trying to encourage this or that with that mechanic, I'm not. I'm trying to model thought processes. The interactions are too complex to breakdown into simple mechanics so I have to focus on situations and thought processes I am trying to put into your head as you play. So I'm not doing this to support/remove PVP.
  4. Im pretty dubious about this "its full of CoD players, everyone just shoots on sight". The number just don't support it. Do you get backstabbed? Yes you do. That is part of the tension and the learning. You need to be fucking careful. Bandit skins were an interesting attempt but they did not achieve what was desired of them, and they're standing in the way of another feature... choosing your own skin. So we fucked that shit right off.

    1.5.8 this weekend?

Respawns of zombies adjusted New equipment interaction system from gear menu Maybe more. Won't be patched now (its peak time, 5.5k concurrent), once it dips down.
  6. Polls do not allow me to troll for the delicious tears needed to continue development.
  7. I am very nervous about this change. But the bandit system is NOT working. And fuck it, let's change it and see what happens? If it is more stupid, then I will roll it back. No harm, no foul. Lets do all the stupid shit now, before this gets too serious. What do you guys say? With me on this? I mean honestly I don't know how this is going to go but the existing system is pretty shit.
  8. I respect admins who host servers. But there is no room in this project for people who donate a server to a private audience. That's like donating to the red cross and asking that they only deliver food to white children, or russians, or whatever. Ping blocking is fine because it cant be abused. Kicking and locking is abused on a daily basis. I'm not retarded, I can see it. This project is for EVERYONE. It is not that I am not showing you respect, it is that I do not want your donation of the server. It does not fit within the parameters of the project. We have been very very clear about this. If you said yes then pulled the fast one on us, and lock/password, I will take a giant shit on your server. That's not lack of respect, that's me doing what I have always said we would do, and keeping true to the spirit of the project and not changing my mind because internet got all excited about it for a day. P.S. send tears.
  9. Guys, like I said: "... humanity is the feature DayZ deserves, but not the one it needs right now. " I'm not removing humanity, I'm removing the skins being based on that. So that we can have findable skins. Humanity is the hero. ... ahem... feature we deserve but, well, not the one we need right now. So it will stay, but silent.

1.5.8 features a new system :) I think it is cool, I hope you guys like it!
  14. I'm not saying what we have now is acceptable. Not at all. We're working to come up with something, but its very difficult when the base game doesn't support it. My recommendation would be that if those donating don't like it (and I accept they might not), then run another ArmA game mode type until we resolve the issue. Please people, just be patient. Try to realize what is happening here, and also the amazing opportunity that has been presented. YOU guys did this, not me. I'm just lucky enough to be a the right place, and the right time, with the right thing. You are sending a message to the gaming companies, in their WALLETS. Don't fuck this up with internal politics.
  15. I have not kicked players for: - Employees/Management of big studios - BIS Employees and Executives - Game Journalists - Myself, and developers The issue is simple: We have had a number of server hosters kicking people because they didn't like the way they played, or because they killed people the server hoster knew, or because the server hosters wanted the server to themselves. "How does this make not allowing people to kick players a bad thing. If a server admin has to kick someone to let his clanmate in, then the server is already at capacity, and will stay that way." For starters, every new connection places great strain on the system (all you respawn spam bitches, fu!). Secondly, this allows server admins to "game the system". They can kick people and say it was "to let someone in". To be honest, our greatest problems and our greatest source of hacking issues... is not from the players it is from server administrators. We have corrupted data, causing the mass "cannot connect" and us having to reset everyones position data because of the actions of rogue server hosters. Look, I'm sorry it has to be this way - but I am a realist. We have to take a hard line with server owners because it is potentially compromising the whole project. I didn't make this to support peoples private gaming experiences on private servers. Maybe a project in future will support that - but NOT this experiment. I am continuing this experiment and I will not deviate from this no matter how much money anyone offers, no matter what any gaming magazine writes. And, to be honest, I don't give a damn how many abusive emails I get from the one or two clans that have an amazing sense of entitlement. Instead I focus on the 95% of hosters who demonstrate amazing generosity. Who can't even get on their own servers, because of demand. So instead they rent more servers. People like Host Altitude who WORK with us instead of AGAINST us. We're not perfect but we are trying damn hard to make this all work. We have to make the tough calls, and we have very little time to make them. A single server gone rogue could fuck everything up. I gift my time and the thousands of dollars of my money for these people, not the whiny people who complain about everything and act like I owe them something. I am genuinely sorry that it has to be this way, a group of very smart people have sat around and discussed this at great length, including with all our initial hosters. We all agreed it has to be this way. Do not pass judgement on our decisions until you know the full story, the facts, the architecture that needs to be supported, the risks. Most of these things I can't list here or they will fall into the wrong hands. I do this for the people who approach this in the way it is offered, for everyone, as an experiment. I did NOT make this for my own clan, in fact in making this I DESTROYED my clan. I forbid them to wear their clan tags. I made this for EVERYONE and if you want to participate and donate, you follow my example and donate to EVERYONE. If you cannot except this, please leave. Because I will not waiver on this.
  16. Arma2NET really is a fantastic evolution to. The guys have done a great job. Hopefully persistence becomes a key part of many ArmA2 communities and it looks like this is happening. I encourage DayZ users to get out there and see whats going on in the other mods because there is also some fantastic stuff. DayZ wise, security is a huge issue for us, hence we are making something that's entirely self contained basically.
  17. Closed, locked. Each thread is another delay from me coding the next update. I've already stated my thoughts and requests on this. Use search.

Time and time again, I've explained this. Please search for my responses... all such threads locked or deleted. It's not in the scope yet, maybe after. Please keep discussion on topic. Moderators: you know what do to do with such future threads. Lock and/or delete.
  19. There is nothing pompus about it, the issues are: - We all share the same central server. That means giving access to that central server to a game server is taking on risk. - We only have a finite amount of administrative resources. Therefore we have to perform triage and choose the easiest, most time-effective servers who cause us the least issues. - We have only a finite amount of resources on the central server. The impact of a server with five players is about the same as the impact of a server with 50 players as the connection is left open. So we prioritize those servers who allow the maximum amount of players. We are not "treating server owners this way" because we can "afford" too. We are doing this because it is the only way we can cope. Please, walk a mile in my shoes for a moment. We have grown from ZERO players to SIXTY THOUSAND players in FOUR WEEKS. We are getting an average of an email every two minutes. It is only going to get worse, and that means we will probably have less resources and have to make even tougher calls. We don't really have an option, it is either we do this or we simply close the whole project down for a few weeks. We originally wanted to release the server files publically and open the whole project up, but the incidents of hacking we were having from several existing server owners made us realize just how bad this would become if we released it. I really, really think many people underestimate just how stressful this kind of project is, and just how much strain it places on resources. They demand responses to emails immediately and they want us to customize everything to meet their demands. They get angry when we won't agree to setup 10 or 20 slot private servers. Shortly, because we can't cope with the existing system, we will probably begin denying server setup for any boxes that cannot host a minimum of one 50 slot server. Priority will be given to big servers that can host 2 or more. This is a matter of triage. I mean, if someone else has a real suggestion - I'm all ears. But we have to prioritize somehow. Please bear in mind, I rent several servers myself and have donated money to many of the servers donation funds. My entire spare time is committed to the project, and I have only insisted on one real rule for server owners: Everyone gets equal, fair, access to the world
  20. HIVE is being redeveloped to work independently of both ArmA2NET and JayArmA2lib. This has been in development since pre-alpha. This is the securest approach.

This..This is just bringing me to tears.

It sounds like you are running patch 1.59 Make sure you install the ArmA2:OA 1.60 patch
  22. 1.5.6 handled errors that it encountered very well. This was removed to an extent in 1.5.7 because it was aiding hackers. A new method has been rewritten in 1.5.8 that will help with this. We are regularly purging the database of "bad data" the constant stuck at loading is likely to be because the server didn't sync your model type properly. As I noted, in 1.5.6 where your client detected it had bad data it was acting under its own influence. This was being exploited by hackers to do a number of things, so it was removed.
  23. "Why does this game have so many idiots?" Seem's kind of obvious. Just replace "game" with world and you have your answer :)
