What the fuck? Where's the persistence?
rocket replied to D3lit3's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Troll or no troll. Good chance to discuss the issue. And one thing DayZ will never have, is Mel Gibson with a bad nineties haircut. -
This is quite interesting. A lot of design issues pop up to mind, but there could be something here. The biggest problem is representing it. UI etc... breaks the immersion. So its very hard to model this mechanic.

This is truely outstanding work. Very useful and some real eye openers. Is it possible this could be conducted regularly? It helps focus my efforts. -

Actually, if you watch the streams, you will see many Russians have excellent ping to US servers. When I was in NZ, I would often get pings of 80 or 90 to US West coast servers despite being a long way away. Many factors affect it. And in fact, I think you'll find the late adopters of the internet actually win out. Places like Australia and New Zealand laid a lot of copper wire early, and they have some of the shittiest internet in the world. Some of the lower socioeconomic countries I have been too actually had awesome internet because it is all recent, newly laid fiber. And I'm a realist, not an idealist. I don't want a project I set the vision for to be associated with racism. As said just before, not because it will make any difference (it won't) but on the basis of principle. Ping is a question of practicality, battlefield triage. Someone has to die, use a scientific method that is arbitrary. Distance does not imply culture or rare or language. It implies distance. -
Why does this game punich you for going OFFLINE?!
rocket replied to zalman's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The reason it is like this is because the legacy game (believe it or not) was much crueler. You actually lost items while offline. I haven't gotten around to finally removing this because it is currently run off values baked into the database, and I've been too busy making hats to sell in game. I mean, I know I say that experiement line a lot - but that only really references whole new mechanics. The reason most things aren't changed that need to be is because I simply don't have the time to do major architectural changes. I'm focusing on the moderate difficulty, big win, items that are lower risk - especially when I am tired. When I'm fresh I focus on the big issues. I'll see if I can squeeze it in for an update this week :) -

What the fuck? Where's the persistence?
rocket replied to D3lit3's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It was a little hard to get what this thread was about, I had to read it several times. The only reason objects are local to a server, is because in cherno you would not be able to move because of the shit placed everywhere. And you would be running along and suddenly a sandbag would appear in front of you. I tried this out for kicks once with a test server, loading in everyones data. It was completely unplayable. It also would take a very very long time to load all those objects. Increasing some aspects of persistence is a goal, maybe even extending your character loading to tents (they would spawn with you) and a bicycle (again, spawns with you) and some kind of companion (such as a dog). -

Extra features for Server Hosts
rocket replied to colonel_black's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
BEC is made by Nux, anything nux makes is awesome! But please be careful for any kicking actions. We do not condone the kicking of players due to language problems. Kicking a disruptive player (one who continues on side chat voice, say) can be kicked. But auto-kicking for text is not okay at all, especially if it is targeted at a specific language (such as Russian). -
Sound, Visibility, and Zombie Aggro Behavior
rocket replied to WitchZero's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think this, it is in line with a few suggestions. I should have some kind of raytracing in the zombies soon which will vastly improve their behavior. Bit this is something I can toy with, not going to be easy but I can give this a go. -

Put Bandages Back On Mouse Wheel Please
rocket replied to destiny0ne's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The system was mostly used to save on performance, as I've explained before. The performance increases were very, very significant. And I needed it this way so I could allow filling water bottles from ponds and non-classed objects like wells. I also happened to like the mechanic, and I think it helps with some more complex interactions that we might have with items later. Mouse wheel feature was not being used at intended, and was a big cause of performance issues and also possibly crashes after some time. I could probably allow the binding of some action to a key, but I think it all becomes a bit console-ey and mixed message. Where possible I will have the interactions in the gear menu right click if only because of the huge performance games. The fact I kind of like it, at least so far, is sort of icing on the cake. I'm not running out another option, but the mouse wheel one just isn't feasible. I could add it as a userAction in the config though, thats a possibility. -

My main aim is to say "hey I really want this feature" but to say "I want players to be faced with these situations, or these emotions". So, for example, the infection mechanic is more about the social consequences within your group. You're in a group of friends, you know each and trust each other. But what do you do when one of you gets sick? I want people to experience these troubles and dilemma's, they are very personal experiences. And I think that means the outcomes are extremely personal and maybe even you explore yourself a little. Maybe not, but I guess that might happen. The wood mechanic is more about putting a finite resource on fireplaces so they can't be everywhere, and also to encourage people to have too look for specific items in specific situations. It was way too easy to light a fire before, now (especially when firewood stops being just loot) it forces you to go on the move again somewhere heightening tension. It also means not everyone will have a fire, so maybe it might encourage some emergent gameplay around people gravitating to fires. It's still an early mechanic, and probably there will be some mistakes with complexity. I am implementing a bear trap, i was think of having it so you had to find the parts for it too assemble it, but possibly that is too much?

Stuck "Loading" After 1.5.8.4
rocket replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Im pretty sure that it is related to servers not running the latest hive, and not deleting their log files (logs get too big). Try another server. So far all the RPT files I have been sent, the loading issue was caused by server issues associated with wrong HIVE version. -
These are actually really clever :)

I do think the post is a little vague. What is a feature? Is that equipment? Surely some more unique items would be interesting? Or maybe not... if so, why? Or are we talking about mechanics? And in which case, what level of mechanics? They work on many levels. What to one person is a great feature can be to another terrible. Also, some features can be designed to be optional to suit a particular play-style. Are these objected too? I too have struggled with this concern. Some bugs take quite a while to fix or may be engine dependent. Until then, I can either generate new content, new mechanics - or I could just wait. I've opted to continue the experiment, adding things that I really wasn't sure would work but I find interesting - like the sickness system. It's got a long way to go before I think we can objectively assess it, but I think for the genesis of an idea it's not bad. It's simple, but it has a massive complex effect on a players thinking and engages them to the world. I guess, in summary. What is do you mean by "feature"?

DayZ syncronizes between 500 and 8000 objects during the game. Some Desync is normal, it indicates the state of the connection with the server. Most of the zombies are local to yourself or other clients so it is a form of distributed computing. This means that you can experience some desync and your game will continue (but accepting there are some problems such as delayed deaths and warping with serious desync). The latest patch fixes some of the issues, as cleanup wasn't occurring so you ended up with massive numbers of objects spawned in game. Some desync is expected for the moment due to the massive number of things happening and transient internet conditions.

Winchester is a placeholder... but for what?
rocket replied to bobda's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Sorry I should have been a bit more specific. I love the winchester, but the content of it is placeholder. I.e. the ammo, the sounds, etc... Much work remains on it and I think it will be quite a different weapon. -
You light a fire by right clicking on the matches (right side of gear screen) and selecting make fireplace. You need to have at least 1 wood pile in your inventory. You can place more piles of wood in the fireplace to keep the fire burning longer (each pile lasts 10minutes).

Even if the characters were deleted, we can't reuse old ID keys for the characters. The issue was the ID keys went above 1 million, and ArmA2 stores values over 1 million in a special format. HIVE did not like this format. Much like win2k, this wasn't really something that was considered during the development (who would have thought we'd have 1 million characters in a month?)

Yes - about 50% of the servers are entirely automated. They will detect new versions of server/client addons and update themselves. The other 50% are managed either by DayZ staff or entirely independent.
