If I was to go in and do the relife, it would delay the update. That's probably what the hackers want. There is little I can do about that, the hackers are exploiting holes in the ArmA2/BE system. We know what these are and will patch them as they are identified. Unless you know what you are doing, it is quite difficult. The guys that do it now are pretty knowledgeable, but for the average user these kinds of hacks are not easy to do. Generally we haven't found that the hackers are doing something deliberately stupid like killing a whole server, because it gets attention, shows in the logs and the database and we then have data to patch in the ArmA2 game beta's. The smart hackers are staying below the radar. Well, that's what I'd do anyway. It will change a lot in the future when we lock everything down, compile all the SQF's etc... so they can't be injected. At the moment the main approach is just to collect the IP's, GUIDs, etc... into a list and later we'll process the data with GameSpy and BIS.

Huh? "the day will come". I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but have you seen the press coverage? The sales figures? Publishers see these figures too. That day came and went and I've made my decisions. What I am doing here is trying to open a dialogue and gauge the community to make sure I haven't gone full-retard with said decisions.

No' date=' I am asking for people's feedback. I'm trying to be open, approachable, connected, rather than what I have seen in my last ten years in the video game industry. I'm trying to be like I wish studios I have worked at were. If that rubs you the wrong way, well, EA games are making plenty of games and they don't follow this philosophy. See, I just don't understand that. I've denied requests for money. Some of the requests have been very sizable. I have done this because money fucks things up. I actually think that when I said that was one of my first posts on the forum. But I am a realist, and I'm asking people for ideas about how to sustain the mod. I can't sustain it forever. It's not like counter-strike, CS didn't have persistent servers and a network of interconnected servers with total bandwidth rivaling a small country, downloads totalling well over 2 or 3 TB per day, and so on. The reason this mod is successful is NOT cause of the content. It is because it is doing something different. The reason it hasn't been done before is because that difference is hard, it's risky, it's costly, and it takes a lot of work. I want the project to continue, but it has to be sustainable. I need to be honest with people that it can't sustain this way forever, but I am not comfortable with donations. I really don't think you have read an absorbed my posts, either that or I am not making things clear.

By commercializing... I don't mean I'm going to become EA or anything. I just mean I think its best you BUY something rather than GIVE me shit and hope for the best. If this was a game, I would expect you to be buying something that has more content, more features, more optimized. Personally, I like what Radiohead did with a pricing experiment. We set a minimum price and then you can choose to pay more if you think its worth it. Most people won't but I think that's better than blind donation. Pay what you think it is worth. If you want to fuck me over with it, then fine, and then that pricing model dies.

Uh' date=' you realize that counter-strike was sold as a product by valve shortly after it was acquired? They made a cool 9 million out of it. I can't keep paying for everything myself. It's not your typical mod. I also can't keep devoting all my time to it. This mod will die if it doesn't recover some costs.

You can then go onto an easy server, get good loot, and go on the hard servers. At least for phase one we will be looking for the best server configuration, then it will be locked down for all DayZ servers. Later we might look at some kind of progression or separation of different server types.

Obviously it's a good feeling, but it has been an extremely busy time so I don't really have any time to think about it. It is easy to get excited about the success so far, but with the state of DayZ as it is I think there is a long way to go before we have something that will last, and remain enjoyable. So that's the goal, we just need to work towards that.

Meta-gaming (like the infiltration that happens in EVE) is part of DayZ If there are servers that are banning people for this meta-gaming, report them and they will be warned. Continued violations they will be blacklisted. Banning for cheating? It depends what you mean by cheating. I've heard some admins who think that teamspeak ghosting is cheating. Betrayal and shit like that is part of the game. -

my crazy hippie-commie-feminist arguments aside... There is no room or scope for us to allow customization of servers. We're going to be creating a standardized server experience. Maybe there will be in future, but now its just not going to happen. Even the current level of customization of servers is beyond what we will have. So you will have less of this, not more. -
