After losing 2 fights with a kitchen knife, and having less of a reach than an empty hand, I've decided this really needs some work. I was able to stab someone in the chest, but was unable to reach the head, and was able to be punched out twice. Regardless of this, I feel stabbing someone in the upper torso a good 20 times ought to kill them, but apparently not. Why is it I feel in so many games, your characters try to retardedly slash or chop with a knife? The purpose of small bladed weapons is to drive them into major blood vessels and organs. Why is it, after taking a few bullets, all of my gear is ruined, but after a few stabs, their organs are not? I would like to think a steel handgun is more resilient to a zombie swinging at it then a human organ at taking a knife, but this is the dayz world we live in. TL;DR Devs, make kitchen knives, combat knives, etc. etc. that if you aim in the upper chest, neck, or possibly even head, it kills them in 1-2 hits, preferably 1 for a good heart stab. These 2 experiences have ruined the suspension of disbelief for some time to come.

Intentionally ruining clothing, and blood as camouflage

I have several questions and thoughts for you, and I like your post. #1 What would happen if I ate an acorn without cooking it in real life? I think they're bitter iirc. #2 I love fruit, and while I hate nearly all vegetable material, this has led to some interesting consequences as you describe. I was surprised this didn't happen in game, I was waiting for the text message. #3 In my mind, we need not just rpgs, but anti-material rifles. For most purposes, this will be more useful. You're taking out the engine blocks of cars, not fighting armored vehicles. Though if armored vehicles make an appearance, I'll be glad to have that rpg. #4 There are people out there that know how to fix helicopters or could figure it out in a very very reasonable amount of time (weeks or months). I got this buddy who plays who I'd bet hard money he could figure it out (he has a helicopter obsession). This is the same buddy of such patience, who'd wait by the lone gas station with his anti-material rifle maybe a half mile off in the woods, would blow out a passing engine block, and then the drivers who get out. Loot up, dispose the evidence for the next unsuspecting vehicle, repeat. He'd spent hours waiting for trucks to pass if necessary. He'd do this for days, just amassing loot, really showed his patience. Never saw him die once doing this, he always had everything set up in his favor. The reason I'm saying this, is there are individuals who have the patience to learn, patience to fully plan out contingencies, and the coolness of head to execute. Alternatively, I'll have to find the video of him and I doing the other obvious way for getting a helicopter. You simply steal it from someone else who has a sustainable fortified base when they're not there. :) -
They have been trained from birth not to. If you're willing to risk your safety on someone with no firearms experience, a hesitation for killing, and someone prone to panicky behavior, go for it. Call me sexist, but you're a damned ostrich. Oh, maybe it's due to conditioning and not biological reality. It's still there and just as much a liability. Then again, maybe I vastly overrate the firearms experience of the users here, and their own willingness to kill. I've generally noticed the less "socially conservative" and more "open-minded" these sorts of posts are, the less real world experience and common sense usually accompanies it.

In a world where there is no law and order, and the majority of girls would be a nuisance at best, greatly reducing one's sex appeal and major selling points sounds like a bad idea for a survival situation.

The Community's List of Suggested Weapons for Dayz Standalone (Version: 1.29)

My favorite .380s are also .32s. Let's get some ortgies, or remington p51. The old one. (Or an old Husqvarna or Browning/FN job) The .32 is a blegh round. (TBH, if you own any of these, a .32 NAA borer might be something to look into, I think the .380 is also anemic) Marlin Model 60 anyone? I tried this with a Stevens .22. I'd still like a stevens. I'd rather go with the marlin 99 over the marlin 60 though. The marlin 99 is 10x cooler. -
Near instant loss of consciousness, and death in under a minute isn't considered an instantaneous death? The way I interpreted that was that he was suggesting the wound would ultimately need to be treated, and is a hindrance, but isn't life threatening immediately. A femoral artery shot most definitely would be.
-
I present to you: the femoral artery. Your argument is invalid. No really, your blood pressure will plummet, you'll lose consciousness immediately, and you'll be dead in under a minute. From a leg wound. (I think major blood vessels should be hit boxes in their own right) The ability to stop bleeding needs a major overhaul. "Yeah, well, I took a few .223s, but I wrapped an old rag around my wrist and now I'm good as new."
-
No, most guns you find should be in emaculate pristine condition. You just need to spend hours removing the cosmoline. Now THAT would make dayz realistic.
-
Modding will be the only thing that saves this game, as its the only thing that saves every game. Dayz is just unique in that it's open to script kiddies, and a better part of the community seems unable to distinguish between a mod and a script kiddie. I remember battlefield 1942 and the only thing that kept that game alive was the awesome mods. Then the same with battlefield vietnam and battlefield 2. Then battlefield 3 and 4 ruined it, and everybody hates them. Mods allowed the original 1942 to play as: Forgotten Hope (a realism mod, but it tried to clumsily balance it and failed spectacularly imo) XWW2 (a more realistic realism mod) Vietnam Desert Combat Interstate '82 Everyone that hates mods is ultimately a consoler -they hate freedom. I remember Namalask and that crazy blood sucker from STALKER (which also required a ton of mods to add the guns necessary to flesh it out).
-
That's an AVT, not an AVS. (The AVS has a different muzzle brake and the stock extends past the wooden upper handguard) It's a 20 round AVT/SVT mag.

Look at the bottom rifle. Aw yus.

I was thinking, the effects of cannabis should reflect as it is. As such, I feel the most important feature this could add would be a way to removed the stuffed status. Further use could lead to a sort "winded state", which might persist for a few minutes (to attempt to replicate couch lock). Another fun feature could be very subtle phantom music or talking. I don't feel as though it should make you hungry, as the use of cannabis, to my knowledge, doesn't rapidly lower your body's energy reserves. (I'm trying to say being hungry in real life and being hungry in game mean two very different things. In real life, hunger is a feeling. In game, hunger is almost like a fat reserve measurement) Perhaps it could also reduce sway? (This is the reason it's banned in the olympics, along with alcohol and unnecessary beta blockers). Also, perhaps further use could lead to seeing "shadow creatures" in the corners of your vision? Not to mention, it could be a source to craft (undyed?) rope?
-
Heart rate alone is no indication of a substance's ability to steady the nerves. http://www.ulster.ac.uk/scienceinsociety/drugsinsport.html The idea was not to make the character actually winded, but to simulate the effects of couch lock, not allowing them to run... (but maybe allowing them to sprint?) to simulate the perceived heaviness of things.
-
Alcohol and weed do reduce sway. Consider the effects of depressants on your nervous system. As I said, you'd get a similar effect from beta blockers, but also benzos, and just other tranquilizers in general. But they should all induce a sort of "winded" status. Another interesting effect could be written text letting the player know that someone was smoking in the area. It could be a dead give away and lead to it not be over used by snipers. Another fun thought: it could be used to drive away the strigoi in case the dead, "hidden ones", or cthulhu try to reclaim the earth.

[BREAKING NEWS] PC Gaming Show: Brian Hicks
agouti replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in Gallery
To make this single player and lan play more attractive, perhaps players could keep the same character across single player, lan, and even 3rd and 1st person servers. To counter the lack of characters, perhaps each steam account could have 3 characters? This would allow, in the event of no servers for whatever reason, allow players to build up their characters between lan parties and such. And allow characters to such parties or wanting to explore to have the luxury of already having their gear. -
The Community's List of Suggested Weapons for Dayz Standalone (Version: 1.29)
agouti replied to alexeistukov's topic in Suggestions
The weapon is actually quite balanced and points naturally. You want to talk unbalanced, check out the the c96. On a side note, I invite all the realism enthusiasts to simply ignore the concept of "balance" in a game so long as physics and biology are properly emulated, and instead confusingly inquire about point of balance as though the firearm were a sort of fulcrum. Don't give the rpgheads any room. -
Personally, I think Dayz should be released with forced 1pp, helicopters, and long range sniper rifles. However, I think there should be another version on release that allows 3pp, has no helicopters, significantly reduced endgame loot, and all snipers are effectively beyond nerfed, they've been buzz beed. I'd call it: Dayz Homosex.
-
But the rof does. :D I'd use one for that alone. Though still, I'd much rather a coonan. The desert eagle has this stupid area in the front where it gets all full of crap. Luckily, this won't be an issue in dayz.
-
Oh yeah, there's bunches of them around, I was just referring to how someone said they're still in use. I could only think of the albanians and a few other areas from the yugo wars, and all chromed out as a parade rifle. Of course maybe they're still used by insurgents in the middle east? I have no idea. They were used extensively in korea and vietnam for sure. They're everywhere man. So I guess they didn't use prvi partizan :P Hornady also makes some btw. Does syria have tough firearms or import laws? While not super common, you can ultimately find them in the US. It's been a while, but I think I saw some at gander mountain. They one where I used to live had like 2 or 3 aisles of rifle ammo of just the randomest stuff. I for sure saw some 7.7 arisaka. I mean, it's really a crap shoot when you go to these places. I for the life of me couldn't find any 7.5 swiss ammo where I lived, but in a town about an hour away (in a much smaller town) at the mc sports, they have a whole shelf of it for pretty cheap (back in 2007 or 2008). I hope these guys hold onto these rifles in the hopes that maybe one day we'll be aloud to own them here! 5,000 stgs would be snatched up immediately. Stranger things have happened. I think we'll see legal marijuana before we see legal imported stgs. But as I said earlier, http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/01/22/new-mp-44-sturmgewehr-rifles-coming-us/ http://www.el-be-tac.com/usa-exports/ Haha, I think I'd rather have a newly made one of any already semi-auto firearm.

The SKS-M was an american invention created by the folks at midwest ordinance, or perhaps one gunsmith. Until Clinton forcibly made them teach chinese workers from norinco, and then stopped them from performing the conversions themselves. Man should have been hung as a traitor, I mean, was he trying to systematically destroy american owned small businesses? Go ahead, give midwest ordinance a call and talk to them about the SKS-M conversion, or how 922r isn't valid if you have an "american made rifle". You won't even get that far. I tried it and was hung up on almost immediately, save for a few choice words. Furthermore (as far as recently), the only use I've heard of the SKS is in the yugoslav wars of the 1990s, and as a parade rifle. Also, the SKS was tested in limited numbers during the closing years of the war. But then stalin died with his stupid insistence on internal mags, I mean wtf stalin? Personally, I think the svt-40, or even a g41 or g43 might make more sense. The g41 maybe not as much, what with its limited numbers, but hey, it has a 10 round mag, which is useful in this crazy world of dayz where nobody would ever ever ever dare store a mag next to a weapon. No really, the g43 would be a better choice (over the g41, not the svt-40). The mags are numbered, why wouldn't they be with the gun? However, at the end of the war, the g43 was getting to be crap, cracking bolts, poor metallurgy etc. That all being said, the israelis converted a bunch of k98s after the war into .308. No country has ever done this with a g43, but this guy did. http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=105817&sid=7d9f332604fd1fc48473cc81c6c38d96&start=15 On a side note, the alaska doesn't come in .308 either, so I suppose no explanation would even be necessary. Then again, maybe the same argument could be given for an stg? NOPE it's 7.62x39, don't ask! Then of course, the stg would only be found in private homes (at least until we get a museum, if we do). Kinda like an AK, but it can't take a scope, unless they add some sort of advanced crafting feature. (on another strange side note, several companies do still make fairly authentic functional reproductions of the stg, the mp40, and the fg-42, if you want to shell out a few grand). I've seen some pictures of conflicts with people using stg44 as a rifle. My bet would be on prvi partizan. Or maybe militias keep old ammo? I order my surplus ammo from aim. Of course, this was on a fun free powerpoint about a german doctor giving a lecture on treatment gunshot wounds, you can find it for free. He remarks the girl holding this rifle is probably unaware its worth "20 grand" he said. (As others have said, I'd guess higher).

How to make .22 long-range sniping impossible/unviable?
agouti replied to Sister Ray's topic in Suggestions
My personal opinion is that I would love to see more advanced mechanics involving the guns because it provides more of a basis for 'leveling-up' and makes long-range engagements all the more challenging. However, its a bit hard-core to expect the average person to create range cards and understand ballistics. Having to learn about that stuff would be awesome in the context of a infantry sim - perhaps like ArmA3's marksman DLC but in DayZ - I'm not so sure. In yon olden times with games, I kept a notebook while playing games, because there was no ingame journals. (Thanks morrowind and deus ex for giving me these, but maybe daggerfall and system shock had them too? I can't recall). I also, for some games, due to the limits of ram which make it so you can't just alt tab and go on dayz db, I purchase maps. For games. Paper maps. The game in question, I had no marker to show where I was, and the maps weren't exact images of the game, but imperfect artists depictions. But hey, you could buy a compass in game (with in game money)! Games used to be awesome, what happened? When I played the later elder scrolls games, there was like this magic compass that always pointed me in the right direction. Totally mindless. Also, this notion of leveling up makes me froth at the mouth. I hate skills, levels, experience. None of it makes sense, except as an attempt to impartially create a simulacrum of combat in a world with dice, but no personal calculators, much less common computers. This was called the 1970s. I remember the last time I tried skyrim I was in this game and repeatedly stabbed this nord with no shirt in the chest, just for him to beat me with a hammer. I just can't take rpgs with their insane restrictions anymore, except for pen and paper, where my imagination can overcome the stupidity of levels. (This is why you hound the DM. After having our horses worked into a frenzy by some orcs using some kind of stimulant tipped arrows, I demanded to be able to take the poison from the corpses of the orcs, which I promptly did. What the DM didn't see coming, was that at his big planned boss battle, I convinced this magician to use the magic hat item, which spawns a random animal. It created a rhino, I hit it with the stimulant after pointing said rhino to the general direction of the demon on top of a castle, and it charged at it, knocked it off, and both plumeted to their death before anybody could so much as attack it.) Also, I recall in the dayz mod, it was on a tatiana server or something, the tg guys, terrible gaming community by the way, the owner is very arrogant and a bit of a cry baby. Regardless, on their private server, on the small island, they blocked off entrances to this sort of town square surrounded by large buildings, by putting shipping cargo steel boxes in the entrance ways. We just stacked wood, making a primitive stairwell, and proceeded to blow up the helicoptors (which were all topped off with m240s, fals, svds, etc.) save one, which we stole. We were then prompty banned for "exploiting game mechanics". Zeno says no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time, seems to me what I did was entirely logical and plausible. Much more so than literally just about every other object in the game which seems to fade through each other in a bizarre, magical way. My point is this, I hate unnecessary restrictions and unrealistic limits. And games abstain from difficult or complex mechanics because they assume the players are imbeciles. The players should be free to let their imagination run wild in a realistic world that lets players use their imagination in killing. I'd make a range card, and damn it, keep my calculator next to me if necessary. The .22 loses a lot of energy at the range. Is there already friction in the game? I think there is. If not, we need it. Also, how accurate is a stock ruger .22? I know of guys putting crazy stainless receivers on them, or bull barrels, target triggers, etc., but what is the stock accuracy? It seems to me if you set the dispersion to realistically be that of a ruger .22, it shouldn't be able to hit anything at 800 yards, but maybe 200 or 300. Not sure how much oomph it would have at that range. However, I should still be able to set it for 800 yards (not some magic auto adjust, but firing it and adjusting accordingly) if I feel so inclined. Maybe the necessary angle required by the scope isn't possible. But Maybe you could create an elevated off center mount? Just thinking aloud here. It's the zombie apocalypse, who do I have to answer to? It's funny how scopes work in this game. They're automatically sighted in, and the same scope mount used in like 4 different guns, only has the scope work on one of the guns. (the PSO rail) At least we got something for the dovetail rails, eh? And they work on multiple calibers (I mean, they're sighted in properly, and can be adjusted properly), and even the same caliber on different barrel lengths, which also should have dramatic fps differences. NOPE. MAGIC SCOPE. -
Yeah, I had no idea what you meant by that. Single player content? In an mmo? Is that like offline mode? Also, I didn't mention any other bosses, because you have to seek them out. The griffin just appears. He was meant to be a team effort? I spent my time in qeynos with the gnolls or that other continent on the east that was all old and foresty with the blue orcs. Or kunark. Had no idea he was supposed to be a group thing. The only time I was ever in ec was to go to ro or to buy/sell something. Also, I just saw a griffin do the exact same thing in axe cop. Hilarious.
-
Aha! Also everquest. In the east commonlands, sometimes, rarely, a griffin would show up. And then proceed to destroy everything.
-
Really? I should be a typist then. Or maybe anyone that played everquest (a game requiring much typing and tactics, before the widespread use of mic coms).
-
This is a very clear example of "Do Not Use Z Word" http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NotUsingTheZWord I mean, you weak up in an eastern european country with mindless insanely strong half dead aggressive humans seemingly haven taken over the world. Better not call them zombies! People use the words they know.
