  1. Air born or water born viruses would be a much bigger threat. But then essentially we would be wiped out quickly, if the virus is as infectious as it is in most Zombie fiction. Air born means even getting near a zombie would get you infected, let alone getting splattered in blood from one (never understood why that didn't infect people, personally. :p ) or hanging around corpses. You guys should check out Plague Inc if you haven't already - design your own viruses and see if you can wipe out humanity: http://store.steampowered.com/app/246620/

    ultra rare katana

The chances of finding a real katana, one that wouldn't break after chopping off the first couple of heads, are infinitesimally small. Almost every single sword you find will be worthless for actual combat. Anything ceremonial. Anything made out of stainless steel. Anything not forged in the exact right way to be a combat weapon would be worse than just picking up a metal bar and beaning zombies in the head with it. Getting stuck in zombie flesh would be a massive hassle and get you killed and if your sword isn't absolutely top notch quality with a razor sharp edge (that you must maintain after every fight), this will happen a lot regardless of what type of sword it is. Edit: Also, unless you're actually highly proficient at some kind of sword style, it's really fucking likely that you will end up doing serious damage to yourself at some point, sooner rather than later. It only takes one slip or miscalculation for you to sever your own limb. Don't expect to be just lopping off heads left and right like. Guns are different, any fool can pick up a gun and point the dangerous end away from themselves (not to take anything away from gun safety, but it is far easier to use one than a sword, otherwise we'd all still be using swords). Swords require years of work before you look like a bitching ass Ninja like this guy:
  3. I love this article: http://www.cracked.com/article_18683_7-scientific-reasons-zombie-outbreak-would-fail-quickly.html To summerise: Zeds have too many natural predators. Insects like flies, mosquitos, maggots and other things that feed on flesh would devastate the zombies reasonably quickly. And that's just the small predators - not to mention larger things.Anywhere hot would see zombies reduced to putrified, rotting sludge within a few weeks. Dead flesh does not do well in heat.Anywhere cold would see zombies freezing on the spot. Limbs get stiff and hard even when we have warm blood pumping through our veins and zeds don't have this advantage. It's actually bloody hard for zombies to spread their disease if the only mechanism is through biting. One vs one, most humans can stop themselves getting bitten unless it's a surprise attack. Having to get within biting distance of me means you're also in reach of my hammer. Biting is a shitty way to spread disease. They can't heal from any sort of damage. Cracked leg? Fucked zed. Broken arms? Fucked zed. There's no healing. Like that zed in The Walking Dead that Rick first sees crawling through the park. Everywhere is full of zombie proof barriers. Zombies can't climb, or cross water, or deep snow, or sand, or pretty much any obstacle that humans can traverse with relative ease. There's just no possible way that all the people on Earth, united, and when taking the above into consideration, could possibly be wiped out via zombies. We have the weapons and the armies. We have intelligence. We would annihilate them before it ever even got to apocalypse levels. So I am going to go with the option, "Pretty much everyone on earth survives."

    ultra rare katana

A Shashka would fit much better, since they are historically Russian and I believe Soviet military officers carried them. I'd like to see swords in the game, but I don't think they should be some crazy, uber powerful weapon. They should be about as good as a machete (after it's been buffed of course) for killing zeds.

    Anyone else having server issues?

Yeah, had that happen to me in front of two guys I was trying to trade with. Couldn't move or do anything and I could hear them. Obviously my character was doing something spastic because they were going. "Oi man, stop moving! Stop it or we have to shoot!" etc and then when it finally caught up I was dead. Dying to lag sucks bad in this game.

    Anyone else having server issues?

I think it's fairly safe to say you're in the minority on the issues per hour statistic. :P Yeah I've had heaps and most of my friends have had heaps too. Really frigging annoying when you get desynced in the middle of the NWAF.
  7. Hell no... who wants to clear tight corners with a rifle? Too long and if the enemy is in an awkward position you can't bring it around in time. FNX or Sawed-off is a million times better for <10m engagements in my opinion.

    Anyone else having server issues?

One server problem and you're posting here? Jeez, you'd hate to be playing at mine then! I sometimes get 5 or 6 sync drops a night and then the server list refuses to populate with anything except two or three servers with no one on them.

    New type of military gear.

People like to compare any game with a first person viewpoint to COD, not realising that in most of the cases their comparisons are utterly unreasonable or downright absurd. `

    My Story... PART ONE

This is why when I wrote my DayZ diary from the perspective of my survivor, I had him wash up on the shores of Chernarus with no memory of what had happened and a very sore head. That way, the story writes itself through his actions and I can slowly reintroduce his memories as he travels and his amnesia fades.

When does your "switch" flip during an encounter?

*without clearly announcing your intentions and waiting for a response. If none is forthcoming, run because they're likely waiting for you and plan to hunt you as soon as you leave. If they say no, say okay and move on. If they say yes, enter slowly and be as non-threatening as possible but be prepared to be shot anyway because some people are assholes like that. :p Probably best just not to follow armed people into buildings if you want to make friendly contact. Wait until they're out in the open and approach them in a friendly manner with your weapon pointing at the ground.

    Positive Experiences

Maybe it's a product of the servers I play on, or maybe it's my play style or maybe I just have a trustworthy voice but I am finding it hard to have a negative player interaction as described by a huge number of threads on this forum. I am usually kitted in military gear (aside from a helmet or mask. I like a beret and sunglasses :) ) and have my weapon in my hands 99% of the time. I am always moving cautiously. Crouched and usually pretty slowly, even out in the middle of nowhere. You could certainly think, if seeing me, that I was stalking something 90% of the time. Yet I still seem to attract nice players! So far in 50 hours or so of play, I've been KoSed a grand total of 3 times. The first was in an airfield so that hardly counts, the second I was ambushed by 4 bandits so okay, fair enough. The third is the only one I'd consider true KoS and that was being shot from across a field when I clearly was a Bambi with not even a melee weapon or can of beans to my name. Every other time I've come across a player, geared or bambi, weapons drawn or not, in the city or out in the sticks, it's resulted in a positive experience. I've helped a bambi with antibiotics and food, given bambi's pistols with ammo and ammo for the weapons they were carrying without them turning on me. Given them melee weapons. I've traded military equipment with geared players in the NWAF and Vybor military bases. Bodyguarded Bambi's on the coast. Travelled with randoms and helped them scavenge. Saved one guy from a horde of zombies (4 zombies constitutes a horde in DayZ :P ). I've yet to have to use the handcuffs I'm always carrying and yet to have to shoot someone in close proximity who hasn't shot at me first. Most of these encounters have not been initiated by me either. More than a few of these players have had a shotgun pointed up their nostril for a few minutes because they surprised me, before I was happy they weren't a threat. Perhaps that's the reason? So I am at a loss to explain these negative experiences that everyone seems to have so often. Anyone else have mostly positive player interactions so far?

    Positive Experiences

 I'm not sure that counts as a positive experience for anyone involved! :P ... unless we're talking HIV+...

    Best Character Contest.

This is the only pic I have of my current character and I've found some new gear since. Dropped the M4 for a Mosin. I'll try and get a better picture tonight.

Aww yeah... Instagib, on DM-Morpheus... They don't make 'em like that anymore. /nostalgia.

When does your "switch" flip during an encounter?

Yes. If you don't have hostile intentions you can surely stop moving for 2 minutes in order to not put me out of my comfort zone. Movement means that I have to keep track of you and have to keep my awareness heightened. If you stop and stand still, as instructed, I will be hugely more comfortable in dealing with you. Interaction is all about comfort zones, and if you do things to put another player out of theirs, the risks of you getting a lead suppository go up exponentially.
  17. Nicko2580

When does your "switch" flip during an encounter?

I have to say that if a player is moving and I tell him to stop, and he doesn't... I have to assume that his movement is a threat and I will shoot.

B95, Mosin question | Sawn of Blaser K95

    Shooting at Bambi's are ya?
  19. Nicko2580

When does your "switch" flip during an encounter?

Well firstly, my weapon is rarely ever holstered. It's in my hands, even if it's pointing at the ground. I still haven't been KoSed solely due to having my weapon in my hands and have had plenty of friendly encounters with similarly geared players so I am not too worried about that. My threat meter goes off when someone starts acting funny. Not responding, walking towards me, not obeying commands (if I do happen to have them at gunpoint) etc. The area we're in also plays a big part. If we're on the road or in a small village, I'll be a little more inclined to trust than if we're in a city or airfield where there's loot around that we're potentially competing for. Out in the middle of nowhere I've found most encounters result in a friendly chat, an exchange of a bit of information and occasionally a trade if we've both got things the other needs.

B95, Mosin question | Sawn of Blaser K95

Mosin. Really it comes down to 5 rounds vs 2. The speed loaders don't make much difference and you still get an extra round with the Mosin. Plus the Mosin can fit the scopes (not sure if the Blaze can) and be spray painted, which we all know makes it way more powerful. :p I think the full barrel shotgun is a better choice than the Blaze for <50m engagements. I avoid ranged encounters if at all possible until the SKS or Mosin is safely in my hands and stocked with ammo.
  21. Finally got a decent session of DayZ in as I've only been able to play for an hour most nights. Started as a fresh spawn at Solnichniy then moved up through Berezino finding pretty much nothing along the way except some food and water. I moved up to Kranostav and spent some time searching there and scored a shotgun and a few other bits and pieces, including a can opener and some antibiotics which I gave to a guy who surprised me out on the streets. He got a face full of shotgun for a few moments until I assessed he wasn't a threat and then we chatted for a bit. He didn't have a weapon except a wrench and was sick/starving and was contemplating suicide, so I gave him the meds, some food and a few cans of drink. He thanked me and headed off in the direction of Elektro - not a wise move in my books, but he seemed to be keen to see the famous city so I didn't try to stop him. From Kranostav, I headed to Gvozdno and from there, Devils Castle. Still not much loot to be found, except a pristine compass, some better clothing and some extra shells for my trusty old shotty and another can opener (saving to trade later). Getting a good view in the direction of the NWAF from the top of Devils castle, I decided to take my chances down there. The server was pretty much fully populated, so I knew I'd have my work cut out for me and a slim chance of much being left for me to pick through. I made my way down through the forest slowly skirting north of Grishino, constantly scanning but saw no one (fuck I love the ability to turn your head while walking... so good). Once I was in sight of the hangers I heard shots. Sounded like an SKS. I went belly down in the grass and crawled about 300m right up to the edge of the hangers near the northern fire station and waited for a good 10 minutes. Another few shots, but no players showed themselves. I looted the firestation, and finally found something worthwhile - a magnum sitting on top of a locker that someone had missed! Since I already had rounds from my earlier scavenging, I loaded up and switched to that instead of the shotgun. Then my connection dropped. Right in the middle of the firestation! :( When I tried to log back in my server list refused to populate with anything but a couple of low pop servers with only a couple of players on them. I have this problem often. :( I hate getting cheap loot but I wanted to keep playing so I logged in anyway and decided not to reloot the firestation but to head to the southern end of the base. There were only 3 other players on the server now, so I took the chance and moved a little quicker. When I got there, all the doors on the buildings were open, but surprisingly there was a ton of loot left. An M4, 2x full 30 clips and a full 40 (I kept one of each and emptied the rounds out of the other 30) and a hunters pack which I switched with my big mountain pack (far too big and visible, the hunters pack is so much better). My trusty shotgun which had kept me safe my entire journey so far, had a hacksaw taken to the barrel and was stashed safely in my pack where she'll remain within easy reach. For my final leg, I moved down to the Vybor military base and found that looted. Even on a low pop server this place gets hit hard! :P But I did manage to scavenge a morphine injector and an ammo box! So that's my trip so far. Now I feel geared up enough to take on some bandits, so my next session I'll be going hunting. I'm going to move south through Vybor and Zelengorsk towards Balota and then finally back to the Cherno/Elektro area and I'll have seen most of Chernarus on my journey! :)

    Finally... A nice long session

lol, this isn't my first run. I've been geared up better than this (although first time with an M4 and ammo box... usually prefer the SKS). This was just the first time I've been able to sit down and play as long as I want with no interruptions. :p

Would phones/internet work in Case of Apocalypse

What you're forgetting is that the exchanges and power plants might still function, but the infrastructure to carry the phone signals/electricity will get heavily damaged. Thinking specifically in terms of a zed apocalypse, places are going to get bombed/nuked, people will panic, cars will crash into electricity poles, armies will move in to fight and destroy a lot of the infrastructure in their path (with orders likely only to try and keep key buildings intact). And there will be no one to fix any of this unless we win quickly. So yeah, the exchanges and the power plants might function, but with smashed up infrastructure all over the world you'll only ever get power/telecom on a local scale. The world will go dark, and once it does, it will likely stay that way.

    Hardcore: Shouldnt Zoom Not Exist?

Lol, it's hilarious to me that people think the current implementation has any real significance when compared to even a crappy set of Bino's. Wait until there's something like a 12x36 in the game! Something you have to mount on a stand to use properly because holding it is far too shaky! :p
