Lol, it's hilarious to me that people think the current implementation has any real significance when compared to even a crappy set of Bino's. Wait until there's something like a 12x36 in the game! Something you have to mount on a stand to use properly because holding it is far too shaky! :p

Would phones/internet work in Case of Apocalypse
Nicko2580 replied to Damnyourdeadman's topic in General Discussion
Maybe. I am not sure. From what I know all GPS Satellites (there's around 30 currently orbiting the earth) currently update off a ground based atomic clocks (most of them using Caesium-133) which resets their own onboard atomic clock to match the one on the ground. I am not sure whether they are able to self-update, but I would have thought that if it were possible it would have been done by now to eliminate the redundancy of having a ground based system. -
Would phones/internet work in Case of Apocalypse

I believe they have to sync with clocks on earth, since any clock on the satellite will also suffer the effects of relativity. So in effect if a satellite tried to sync it's timekeeping clock with an atomic clock aboard the same satellite it wouldn't work, because both clocks are in the same reference frame compared to earth and would both be losing time compare to identical clocks on earth. So once the timekeeping software on earth goes down, the satellite will be losing time relative to earth every day and that will throw your position off more and more ever hour. After as little as a few days you could be tens of miles away from what is shown on your screen. -
You've got to be kidding me? I work in a marina, where I can look out over the horizon at distances of around 5ish kilometres. At 200m I can easily make out a person standing on the breakwater fishing. I can easily distinguish what their wearing, colours of their shirt, jeans or if they have waders on or not and whether they're using an overhead reel or a spin reel. I can even see when they catch a fish, quite clearly. If I use my binoculars I can see what colour eyes they have at that distance! At 500 - 1000m I can easily distinguish the hull type/colour of a given boat or make out whether it's my friends boat heading back or not. At 5km I can still see the glint from the windscreens and reasonably distinguish the size of the boat, from something around 12ft to big ass boats approaching 70ft. AND I HAVE BAD EYESIGHT AND NEED GLASSES! Human eyes adjust FOV on the fly. They typically have a FOV of 120 degrees. Stand somewhere where you can see far into the distance and pick something to look at; a tree, a house whatever. You can watch as your eyes adjust your FOV to focus on the distant object and render it clearer. Your peripheral vision will dim as your brain blocks it out to focus on the distant object This is a test you can perform yourself. DFOV is what we usually see and is what your character sees when you click the RMB. There is no zoom.

Would phones/internet work in Case of Apocalypse
Nicko2580 replied to Damnyourdeadman's topic in General Discussion
Not for very long. Once the software that updates their clocks goes down on Earth, any device that connects to them will be off by a factor of 10 miles or so per day. They need to be adjusted by (I think) about 38ns every day due to considerations in both general and special relativity. It could end up being exceptionally dangerous using a GPS after the apocalypse. I'd stick to a map. -
Dafuq is up with the title of this thread? I thought you were proposing a new food item.

Just remember to take note of the name of the serve you're joining and then you won't have any issues in future.

lol, looks like half the places I've seen in DayZ to me. Especially the second and third pics. :p

You won't ever become a zombie though. All the survivors are immune to the virus according to the lore of the game, so you cannot get infected. They didn't die and come back. They're still living humans, but they're infected. That's why there's no headshot only kills in this game.
-
I know where to find guns right now if I needed them in a real survival scenario? I don't see why DayZ should be much different. What I meant was that once you have food, water, and some decent clothing you can skip 90% of houses on the map. In reality, you'd never know what you might find in any given house. Sure, it'd be unlikely to find full military kit in a civilian house, but not impossible. Some houses don't even spawn loot at all at the moment not even food or water. This is the fix I am most anticipating.

A compass is very much your friend and you can generally find one in most of the larger towns. I've found them in all sorts of places that spawn loot so make sure you search everywhere. Once you have a compass you can find North and after that everything is gravy. Landmarks will tell you which town you're in - for example Elektro and Cherno both have coastal industrial areas with a single inlet marina. Berezino has a larger multi harbour marina and also a long promenade down the middle of the city, with tank statues (a harsh killzone, so be careful in there). Once you know roughly where you are along the coast, your compass (or your directional sense if you're good at reading the environment) can tell you which way to head to get inland to some of the other villages and cities. The main roads will have signs on them at almost every intersection and once you've been to places a few times, you'll learn to recognise the names even though they're in a completely different language. Do not walk on the main roads however. Stay off to the side and follow the lay of the road through the land. Walking on the road is asking for someone to rob you blind or murder you. Walk softly, and carry a big gun. Good luck out there.

Good kill mate. He was warned and he made his intentions quite clear so I wouldn't feel bad at all. I give everyone fair warning. In my first engagement I had a 4 man team approach the house I was in and I still gave them warning not to come inside. I simply said, "Don't come in here. I don't want trouble and I'll be on my way." but the only answer was a bullet through the window aimed at my head. They got me eventually, but I took one of them out in the process.

Just because he said he's happy with it as it currently stands that doesn't mean he has no refinements planned. As it is melee works pretty well in terms of the mechanics - you get your axe out, swing it at someones head, and it kills them. There's not a lot more to it than that, unless you want a blocking/parrying system as well. What needs to be tweaked are both the animations and the actual statistics of weapons. Adding different types of damage would go a long way towards making the weapons 'feel' better. Slashing, piercing and crushing and combinations of the three. Slashing (machete) obviously causes cuts and wounds that bleed lots. Piercing gets through armour (crowbar/axe) and crushing breaks bones (axe/fire extinguisher/bat) etc.

Happened to me for the first time last night. Logged back into the server I was just kicked from and viola, everything restored. Then just log out again as normal and you should be fine.

I'm shaky about ever leaving ground level at the moment and my most important rule is to never drop anything valuable while inside a building or on terrain that isn't dead level. :p Lost far too much good gear falling through floors or through the ground. This will all of course be fixed and hopefully the loot randomised because I am sick of skipping the majority of houses because I know there's nothing useful in them. That's an immersion killer for me too.

I'd like to see serious wounds require stitches from a sewing kit as well.

Would phones/internet work in Case of Apocalypse
Nicko2580 replied to Damnyourdeadman's topic in General Discussion
The power grid would fail within days of an apocalypse as people begin dying and fleeing from their stations. Within a few days after that food would begin to rot. Only canned and dry food would be edible. Water sources would become corrupted. Sewage systems would break down and flood, spreading disease. Without power the world will fall into chaos within just a few short days. We rely on electricity for literally every modern convenience. This is why governments are so concerned about terrorist attacks on key power infrastructure. The potential to do damage is far greater than any bomb or other attack. You might be able to restore power locally, but if the apocalypse is world wide, then you won't get the internet or phones back as that would require you to restore power across the globe. Radio would be your safest bet to try and contact others. This is true too, but most places don't run on Nuclear or Hydro power. Even then the systems may continue to work but it only takes one accident and without anyone to perform maintenance on the actual machinery, things go south quickly. The apocalypse only has to be lucky once, whereas the power plants have to be lucky every day to keep functioning. Many countries would lose power quickly. The infrastructure would be taken down by car crashes, planes falling out of the sky, people fighting and killing and using explosives on each other. The government dropping bombs on infected cities (assuming we're talking about a Zed apocalypse) etc etc. Large chunks of the infrastructure required to supply power to an entire country would likely disappear very quickly. So while the power plants keep running in their local area, they're entirely unable to supply the rest of the country with their life-giving energy. -
1. Find protector case. 2. Find medkit. 3. Put medkit inside protector case. 4. ???? 5. Profit

Nice story man. I too have met my end in almost that exact spot, after spending a long time scouting the area. While I was diligent, a sniper/bandit must have been watching me for a very long time as I was cautious every step of the way. I spent a long time in cover watching the buildings, over and over, every time I moved to a new vantage point I'd check them again and the forests, and the hills. I never stopped to arrange anything, only picking stuff up and moving along quickly and quietly. Then finally when I got to the last hanger, BANG. You are dead. I avoid those hangers like the plague now. So incredibly hard to search without being seen by anyone who happens to be watching.

Yes you're probably right, but the difference there is that KoSers will just shoot on sight, usually regardless of range and most of the time without much skill either (not everyone is an uber lethal murderer who waits in the shadows and pounces like Batman at the perfect moment). In that scenario my trusty SKS is much more of my friend than a shotgun.
-
The only thing I've found disappointing so far is being killed when I'm clearly not a threat. Running across some fields last night towards a town, fairly far inland and clearly without a weapon or any decent gear someone thought I needed a bullet. Target practice I suppose. They were a crap shot though. Took them at least 15 rounds to finally get me.

The first thing I do as a new spawn is go and look for a shotty. In the beginning of the game when you're gearing up, they're awesome protection in towns out to about 50m, which is going to be the general range especially in cities. Once I've picked up my primary of choice though (was the Mosin, but now I am leaning towards the SKS... just wish you could paint it) it gets cut down and stashed in my backpack. My theory is that if I get held up, I can drop my SKS and look unarmed. Then, if the bandit makes even a minor mistake, it only takes me a second to whip it out and blast them. The same thing works with a pistol, but at the range we're talking about here I'd rather have the quick and effective power of the shotgun. Also good for clearing buildings rather than trying to do that with a rifle.

Edit: If you got here via the link in my sig, please scroll up for the poll. I've seen a plethora of posts across the boards lately about status icons and providing more information and feedback to players about what's happening to their avatar. I'll list some of them here: Infiltrators status icons thread: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175221-states-should-display-icons-not-textannoying-sounds/ Smell: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175393-whats-that-smell/ Psychological effects (thread 1): http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175162-psychological-effects-of-trauma-mechanic-logical-and-fair-to-all/ Psychological effects (thread 2): http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175264-psychological-effects/ The Dirty State: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/175121-the-dirty-state/ Gameplay Mechanics Pt 1 - The Player: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/169278-gameplay-mechanics-pt1-the-player/ And there are many more ideas floating around in topics here and in General Discussion. I'd like to gauge how the community feels about status icons vs avatar generated information such as animations and sounds and how that relates to immersion and authenticity. Do you like icons and a GUI? Or does it break immersion for you? It's my personal opinion that things like icons, text, and status updates in the inventory break immersion in what is probably the most immersive game I've played in a long time. I don't like seeing things appear on my screen. I might be on the far end of survivalist here, but I don't like my toolbar and I don't like the aiming reticule and having text updates breaks immersion for me. I don't like being told when I am 'healing' or 'healthy'. I can make exceptions for hunger and thirst, because they are fairly hard to model in a video game, but I think that most other things can be done without resorting to icons. I feel that if a lot of the ideas for icons etc were implemented, we would end up with another 'survival' game that holds your hand throughout the entire process, constantly updating you on your status without you having to figure things out for yourself - something which I don't want and I am sure many of you don't either. There are many games which do this now, Day Z is great (for me at least) because at the moment that type of hand holding is pretty minimum. As of now many things are represented quite well by animations and sounds and do not require a text or icon update (they have them, but I don't think they're needed currently) to let us know what's happening: Bleeding - animation (granted this needs to be redone to look better).Pain - shaking (in 1pp), moaning.Broken leg - inability to walk.Shock - unconsciousness if shock is higher than blood.Cold - player will shake from the cold, but not as much as pain. Breath mists in the air. I'd like to see peoples suggestions on firstly, whether they'd prefer icons/text or animations and secondly suggestions for animations that could be used for all the different status effects we can think of. For example: Wet - water drips off your body. Inspecting clothing will add a line that says, "This <Item> is damp and needs drying."Sick - sneezing. vomiting. shaking. sweat droplets (1pp)Any other status effects you can think of feel free to post and discuss.

This thread is not about 3pp, read it again. I specifically left 3pp out of this thread because there are 1000 other 3pp vs 1pp threads.
