Pending Changelog: Experimental Branch: 0.42.116002
McGarnagle replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
I'm sure someone's already mentioned this, but if I had only one complaint about this entire process, it would be about adding the new patch notes to the old list of changes. That doesn't help the people that actually play the experimental version, it actively confuses people making the switch from stable to experimental, and has no bearing on the "living document" that exists with the devs. STOP, please. -
Not to support whining, but most of that was in .37, which you'd know if you had actually been playing it. Try being less of a sarcastic ass and your mistakes will make you appear less idiotic in the future. I think a lot of the 700 megs is framework for persistent items, cooking, and animals, even if it isn't enabled yet.

It's a 9mm pistol

I noticed the download in my Steam, looked out my window, and saw clouds parting while a chorus of singing angels descended from above.
-
I'm quoting you because I agree with this, but you have my beans for that sig.

I dunno, if this person has the balls to do this and still stick around as a regular, they'd certainly have my respect. This board needs to lighten up. The only humor you see around here is sarcasm so dry we're like the saltine crackers...of...something...metaphor. Shut up.

Name 5 thinga you want the most for dayz asap.
McGarnagle replied to Serious Stan's topic in General Discussion
I dunno about "ASAP," but the five things I want the most? I guess: 1) mod/map support - Many of the best stories coming out of the mod involve custom maps, like Taviana 2) Servers stable and robust enough that mapsize dictates player limit, not the engine; See #1 3) Proper animal AI for dog, predator, and prey. Possibly more important than good zombie AI, assuming wall-glitch is an obvious future fix 4) regardless of how rare any particular weapon is, variety, variety, variety!!! Maybe this should be #1.... 5) Make it so we can run and use 1 handed weapons at the same time. 2 handers are almost perfect now (in the latest experimental), so the obvious strength for 1 handed/punching is mobility. -

The best way to phrase that is that EULAs are, for the most part, untested in court. Only an idiot would mistake that for a "void agreement," and only a shyster would try to convince you that they're the same. No one should push the EULA issue until something so egregiously offensive and fraudulent occurs, that it is worth the risk of courts deciding that EULAs ARE enforceable. If someone picks a stupid battle, it could set a stupid precedent that we'll have to live with for a long time. In very (overly) simplified terms, that's how courts work when dealing with uncharted territory. -
I'm not going to insult your intelligence or anything, but I hope you realize that this kind of thread will only encourage people to do the things that piss you off Absolutely no one is going to go, "man, I want to combat log right now, but that guy on the internet was so convincing..." Also, all of the ONLY A MAN PLAYS THIS GAME NOT PUSSEES crap just makes everyone dumber. Not even just people that play DayZ, but everyone.

How many of threads were actual discussions that weren't hijacked into arguments about KoS? Keeping down redundant posts is fine, and forums just wouldn't work without moderators to keep them clean, but at a certain point, people want to "discuss" things in this "discussion" forum. I appreciate the policing of the ad hominems. That part I definitely agree with, even if I partake in it myself.

Caring about miscommunication is very un-Dude. The Dude abides. -
I want helis and I've been playing games for longer than some of you have been alive. All of this "casual" "PC Master Race" crap, if taken seriously, is called "elitism." People used to be elitist about things that actually made some kind of sense, like wealth, or job-skills, or literacy and education, but now we get children arguing about true devotion to fucking video games. What a brave new world with such people in it.... Seriously, calling someone a casual is on par with starting a confrontation over someone wearing the wrong football jersey to school. It means you're a big, dumb meatheaded human being.

I think the blindingly brilliant Blue Supergiant, that the DayZ planet clearly orbits, is a lot more of an immersion breaker than the M4, Blaze 95, or the "tactical shirt."

Why such a difference between title development comparing to Dayz?
McGarnagle replied to Rick1633's topic in General Discussion
Believe it or not, Star Citizen is more ambitious of a project than DayZ. And, if I'm not mistaken, they've constructed everything for SC, including the game engine, from the ground up. You can't just compare the number of employees like that. Mario Galaxy probably took more people to develop than DayZ, as well, but you don't gain anything by comparing them to each other. Same with Star Citizen. -
Had a buddy just get this the other day. I wonder when they snuck it in, because it wasn't in any patch notes that I've seen. Kinda cool idea, I guess, though it should need a splint in the long-term if they want it to feel authentic. Having morphine fix it would be like adding in-game Ritalin that permanently slows down time, while increasing the FOV to 360. It's obviously not a bug... Come on, seriously? How would a bug magically generate text to describe itself? If there's any bug-like aspect to it, it's just that they haven't finished it.

Aspects that accumulatively wear on your patience in dayz
McGarnagle replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
You're scoped in without a weapon out if it's really a "slight" incline. Even if you think you aren't, you are. Tap right-click. People should be able to "jog" up a hill, but not a mountain, and doing so for long distances with a pack and rifle would give the average person shin-splints or worse. With boots on, full fatigues, vest, brain-bucket, it's almost laughable. No argument from me on any of this stuff, though at least one of them has largely been solved on the experimental alpha. Loot has appeared for me immediately on every server I've tried, save for one in the UK. I'm in Texas, so it may be partially dependent on the quality of your connection. -
Update the server hosting rules: Properly and definitively define "hate speech"
McGarnagle posted a topic in Suggestions
In the dregs of a whiney, complaint threat on Reddit, an actually interesting point was brought up that I was able to confirm here. There seems to be no specific rule against harassment of players in servers by admins. Meaning essentially that, aside from hate speech, Admins can say basically whatever they want on the chat, up to and including in-game type threats (e.g. empty threats to delete character), revealing position on map to other players through chat, and anything intended to ruin the experience of others, shy of outright bigotry or the flagrantly illegal. Hilariously, players harassing others is grounds for a kick (how they determine true harassment from role-play is beyond me), but there is no mention of Admins harassing people whatsoever. Understandably, this could be considered "common sense," but one cannot set policy, or avoid setting it, on the assumption that everyone has common sense. Full Disclosure: I have never encountered this myself, and it seems easy to profile the type of servers where this might happen, but the fact that it's possible at all is alarming to me. Besides, other players have reported this kind of behavior, officially and in places like Reddit, so it happens to at least some segment of the user-base. This hardly seems acceptable for reasons too numerous to list in full. We live in an age where Terms of Service and EULAs are 50 pages long, just to install a freaking web browser, so it's hard to see much besides a lack of awareness on the part of the (presumed) legal team. If it seems I'm grasping at straws there, it's because I totally am. In the absence of information, ignorance and assumption will breed. I don't know what goes into this, so you have to tell me. And unlike some customers, I'm actually trying to be understanding here. We have very little feedback relating to server abuse (linking to the report page and rule list is not feedback), and it isn't just limited to this situation. Enforcement of the existing rules is a problem in and of itself, but we can't even begin broach that if the rules themselves are incomplete and static. Additionally, we can't do our part to work with the devs unless we know what to do and can see a tangible result after doing it. The current "reporting" system for server abuse is famously pointless, and that is another big problem. There's been a server with a Message of the Day that says "welcome to the rape train" for weeks. I'm sure we all remember Einstein's definition of insanity as referenced in Far Cry 3... But I have faith in you guys! Obviously, the rules are just a placeholder and are in Alpha. Maybe they're mostly complete, but just not implemented yet, like the Ruger :P. Really, all I'm asking for is something along the lines of: "potential and real abuses of server hosting privileges are things we monitor, and the rules will be updated as necessary through the development process and into release." A little bit of reassurance goes a long way in turning angrish, ranting redditors into loving, loyal customers. For a chatty customer like me, it means buying more games from the same publisher just to reward good policy, as well as easy recommendations to friends. Reference: Server Rules as presented to the typical DayZ user tl;dr? If you're too lazy to read it, you aren't mature enough to have an informed opinion about this. Go away. -

Pffft, those are baby mountains for baby men. THESE are mountains: -
I'm not going to attack you, because the whole "controversy" is one of the dumbest things I've ever witnessed, which is actually saying a lot. However, I don't really agree with your conclusions. They're WAY too speculative about Rocket's deepest feelings about game design. I see no way to extrapolate that much data from a sentence or two in an already dubious article.
-
Given some recent...unpleasantness relating to unprofessional journalism, I had a thought. I didn't come from the mod, and I didn't buy this game because of Rocket at all. It was the Rock Paper Shotgun Dayz players, as well as some choice YouTube videos of the mod, that convinced me to give it a go by making the game look and sounds like a lot of fun. So far, I've had a blast and met some really cool people, at an age in life where the process of making new friends tends to slow down. So, what made you buy the Standalone? Long time mod player with 1000+ hours under your belt, a "scrub" like me, or something in-between? What made you want it, even after all of the Alpha warnings and Rocket himself saying not to buy it? And second, has your mind changed since then? Not just about the purchase, but what features you're most excited for. For example, I was really excited to try out aircraft, whenever they make it in, but now I'm most excited about the prospect of a simple bicycle, and trying to survive the finished game with no better vehicle than that. Now, I'm excited about the campfires, and hanging out with my new DayZ buds in a low-key setting, to break up all of the running and not-shooting. Anyway, I referenced the Eurogamer article to show what spawned this train of thought, NOT to start the shit-storm back up. There's already a thread for that, so go poison that well if you're still butthurt about it. This is a place to talk about why we wanted the game, and hopefully, why we still want it. NOTE: If a thread like this exists, I couldn't find it using three different search queries, with and without quotes. If you can find the same topic elsewhere, and it is LESS THAN A MONTH OLD, then please feel free to ask this thread to be locked.

Every few days, I eyeball ArmA II in my Steam store. Is it worth it purely for DayZ mod, since the SA is probably a few months away from significant changes to the gameplay? (<-----not a complaint!)

I just noticed my thread title, lol. Why made me not grammar good? Rephrasing sentences + no-sleep = bad man. Some interesting responses. I think it's pretty impressive how much Frankie contributed to the community, basically through free advertising. I did watch some of his videos when I was dithering over whether to buy it, but after the whole Rocket interview thing, I really didn't want to tempt people to talk about certain "hackusations," So I left him out. He's really good entertainer, though. No doubt about that. Thanks to everyone that replied! Okay, I'm going to try and separate the "Rocket, RAWR" portion of this from the "Eurogamer" part. Please, bear that distinction in mind: Eurogamer editors, unlike the average moron online, are expected to do a token level of research on any subject before writing about it. This is a basic principle of journalism, and really, any kind of writing. Even novels and comedy articles about dick jokes. If they can do it, Eurogamer can too. Dean's plans to move have been readily available online for months, so regardless of how you feel about the whole thing, Eurogamer either failed to do basic research, or knowingly ran old information as an groundbreaking exclusive. And not just them, Rock Paper Shotgun, whom I normally love, carried the same story with the same lead! You're right that it wouldn't be a big deal if idiots didn't exist, but I can't hold masses of faceless idiots accountable for their actions. I CAN boycott Eurogamer and spread awareness about their lazy/fraudulent "journalism," and I'm going to continue to do so, as long as it isn't spamming other people's topics. If they run a public apology (they won't) or acknowledge the whole thing in any way, shape, or form, I'll stop and never bring it up again, at least not as something to hold against them.

Rocket standing down from Dayz by end of year
McGarnagle replied to Hetstaine's topic in General Discussion
(Last one, I swear) Clearly, you've never been away from home for over a year. That homesick feeling you got as a kid going to camp or staying at a friends house? That's not homesick. That's separation anxiety. Serve in the military, like Dean did, or move to the Czech republic for a couple years, and come back and tell us how being homesick can't be a real and serious thing. Being homesick is a like a female orgasm. Once you've had it, you effing know it, and would never doubt it's power. -

You're right, what the fuck am I doing here making fun of idiots? I could be enjoying my life! The sun is shining, I'm healthy, I'm not an entitled asshole freaking out over someone maybe leaving in maybe a year or so, maybe... It's a good day to be alive! I'm going outside to smoke a cigarette and watch some clouds in my hammock. -
