So we all know that using things like Skype or TeamSpeak pretty much defeats the purpose of playing a game that strives to be as realistic as possible, but sadly it is inevitable. Give people the chance to have and an advantage, via telepathic link with each other that spans ANY distance, and they will abuse it maliciously. That being said, I think there are a few changes that could be implemented to encourage the use of the in game radio. The MAJOR change would be to add a slot, similar to military boots having the ability to hold a combat knife or boonies and fishing hooks) that specifically holds the radio on things like vests, or even just adding a clasp on the back of the model and making it an item that one would simply equip like clothing, so that it doesn't cost the player an entire two slots just to use. Let's face it, if you're going to use a walkie talkie, you won't be fishing it out of your backpack every time you need to use it. More than likely you will have it clipped on to a belt or attached by some other means. Other small changes such as making them slightly more common, along with batteries, decreasing their inventory size to one slot, and increasing their range would do nicely. Obviously this wouldn't completely stop the use of Skype or TeamSpeak but maybe changes like this would at least give players SOME reason to use the in game radio. I for one would definitely use them more often with my friends if it were more convenient.

Exactly why that needs to be reworked. Being able to hear a whisper from 40m away is tad ridiculous. If the game took the volume of the incoming voice into account and projected the voice that other players hear in game at the same, or near the same volume, suddenly we can now whisper to those right next to us without much fear of being heard, and extend the range at which we can be heard by shouting. I REALLY hope something like this can be done... The first time I played the standalone was the first time I had experienced the Arma engine and small mechanics such as direct chat and free look blew my mind. If they could only tweak these things just a bit.

It's a metaphor for being shot...

I think people WOULD stop moving.. Berezino and Svetlo would remain the primary pvp hot spots because of their proximity to the most likely spawn points and you can find most of those guns, with enough ammo, right there in those two cities. Only the people who make it a point to not just gear up with the best military loot and actually do something different will do any exploring but then eventually, they will have to go back to those cities to get some form of human interaction... even if it is just a bullet. Military loot serves as a kind of risk/reward decision. On one hand, you are a deadly efficient killer but on the other, anybody who kills you is likely going to gear up instantly from you and continue the cycle. As much as I hate to say, military loot is pretty important to the overall experience. I don't think this game would be fun if it were a hyper-realistic Fistful-o-Frags.

Weapons - Where Should They Go Next?
darth_vaizard replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I think they should focus more on making improvised weapons. There's probably NOTHING more satisfying than killing someone with the bow. At the same time though, I would like to see some really iconic, stereotypical zombie apocalypse weapons... Thankfully, most that I can think of are already implemented. -
I feel you exaggerate a bit. The sway is negligible if you steady your breath and have a bipod. Granted the dispersion and bullet travel speeds need to be tweaked but sniping is still very possible at 400m+. Just takes the right preparation to minimize the chances of a miss caused by dispersion or lag..

Why does 'feeling the pulse' reveal the name?
darth_vaizard replied to roguetrooper's topic in General Discussion
Everybody I check is named 'Unknown Entity' not sure if metaphor for anonymity or rage quitter... -
The newly implemented hypo/hyper thermia system is not bad enough to warrant not playing in the rain... Especially since the rain coats protect you from it.

As somebdy who has played since a month after it was released, the game is leaps and bounds ahead of what it once was. If you want to play this game at its most unplayable, go back a few patches where you couldn't move 5m without rubber banding back to where you were, or even earlier than that where you couldn't even join a server without having massive desync/lag. Just because you bought the game in its infancy, which it still completely is, doesn't mean its going to be a full game when you want it to be. Making games of this scale takes YEARS. It's been 9 months. I'm surprised they have gotten done as much as they have.

I actually just had quite the experience in the giant hotel thing in Novo... Two players had absolutely loaded the entire building with, for lack of a better word, stuff. I went up, had a quick conversation with them, decided the world would be better off without them, and killed them. Shortly after that, THREE other people stormed the building and it made me REALLY want at least a bear trap... or a claymore mine...
-
Yes please! I'd be happy if it took .45s or even .357s but who knows. Maybe they will make another ammo type for it.
-
I'd say they should allow the character model to change a bit but then we would see morbidly obese militards... That or people who starve their characters in an attempt to make themselves a slightly smaller target.
-
Granted it's probably a little exaggerated when the models for the guns have flash hiders on, but without them attached, its pretty spot on. Perhaps they intend to add them as separate attachments later that will reduce the current flash. Flash suppressors are not just a downgrade from the suppressors you see in modern shooters... They are nigh essential at night so you don't completely blind yourself when firing.

hidden Fake death animation?
darth_vaizard replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Well, hostile animals are confirmed for later. Best course of action if one happens to have an unwelcome handshake with a bear is to play dead. Unless you have the means to kill it but even still, bears are very difficult to kill at best. -
So I did some searching around to see if anybody had addressed the draw distance for campfires. After finding nothing, I decided to do a test for myself. I lit a fire on a patch of beach that was easily visible from the stern of the RIfy. When I climbed to the top of the ship, I was pretty surprised to not see anything. This was well within 300m and SHOULD have been clearly visible because one would be able to clearly see a player at this distance... Also, I have all my config settings that control the distance that things appear set to be no lower than 500m. Anyone else notice this? Having a campfire lit should be a risk, not a comfort.

Thanks for informing me.

How are we unofficially going to call this type zed
darth_vaizard replied to basinox's topic in General Discussion
I think they should NOT give us a name and we shouldn't settle on a specific name. Let players, or small groups of friends, name them as they want. I'm fairly certain if we were to exist in a zombie apocalypse right now, the universal name would be 'zombie' because that's just how culture is nowadays but take The Walking Dead for example, zombie is not used and everybody seems to have a different name for them (walkers, biters, etc). I would like to run into a group of friendlies and be confused when they say "Chimp to the left" when I personally know them as crawlers. -
I'm not talking about spawning in the general vicinity of major cities, I'm talking about dividing the entire map into 6 to 8 (maybe even less) sections and picking a random spawn from a bunch of random spawns in that large section... This wouldn't let you spawn in with friends but it would prevent spawning in Berezino when you want to be in Balota. NOBODY wants to run that far, immersion/realism or not.
-
Letting us choose from a few large sectors of the map to spawn in, and making sure there's enough incentive for each sector, would work nicely. Random spawns don't really make much sense to me. We should be able to pick a random spawn but only if you want to.

Why I kill other players (outsided of defense/necesity):
darth_vaizard replied to crazykage's topic in General Discussion
Sometimes I like to 'hunt' players but then get close enough to tell them to turn around. When they do, I have my gun out, obviously, but then tell them what they could have done to make themselves a bit harder to follow. I see no need to outright kill them after that so I let them go... It is just the hunt, not the killing after all. -
We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.
darth_vaizard replied to 1S1K-Airborne's topic in General Discussion
This doesn't allow for a change of heart in the player. When I played the mod and played as a bandit for a while to see what the buzz was about, I noticed that I had a noticeable amount of unwanted turban. When I decided that this way of playing was not for me, I couldn't do a damn thing about it because of the way I looked. People shot me on sight because I looked different from everybody else... This was always a major gripe of mine about the mod. That being said, bandits and heroes should be able to wear certain things that everybody has access to in order to distinguish themselves if they see that as something they need to do (I always envision biker gangs, or the horrible, wretched, pantless clown thugs). All they need to do is add more clothing options and peoples creativity, or cruelty, will take care of the rest. -
I don't even need the gun, I see my targets first, or the backpack, a nicety. Hoodie and cargo pants are all you REALLY need.

Trigger simulation and Sight Alignment
darth_vaizard replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
I love the idea of the sight alignment if it's incorporated correctly. The amount of sway in that gif is just ludicrous. I do not, however, like the idea of the cones of fire decreasing as you aim. Bullets go where you point the muzzle of the gun and only THEN are they subject to outside forces such as wind and gravity... no amount of aiming will make where they go more accurate. Taking time to settle the sights and taking shots as you align the sights between shots would be far better and more realistic. Shooting at the ranges in DayZ at the moment (50-200m max) is NOT that difficult. Especially with high caliber firearms such as the AKM or Mosin. That would be child's play for even the rustiest war veteran and I'm fairly sure that given enough practice, something that we already do with guns that get added in, an average Joe could make shots at upwards of 500m which in my honest opinion, is PLENTY for the average player. The best way to get the most realistic shooting mechanics in the game is to keep it simple. Assume that all characters that are active in the game have the same level of proficiency with weapons, get the weapons themselves ironed out, and then leave things such as positioning, ability to allow sights to settle, and having control of the characters respiration so accurate shots can be made distinguish the skilled players from the bambies. -
They also need to remove the things like rustling bushes and sounds that resemble somebody climbing a chain link fence unless there's actually a player doing these actions... (climbing fences taller than your waist is also needed). I don't know about anybody else, but being desensitized to those sounds in a game that can be so incredibly immersive as this game, is not what I wanted. I remember playing with my best friend closer to when the alpha was released and literally crawling everywhere even though the grass didn't render to give us concealment and flipping our shit when we heard sounds that sounded like a player could have made them. I want THAT back.

People with choppers SHOULD control the map... That's what they are actually used for. I'm going to assume we are going to have personalized anti-air counter measures and .50 cal rifles (which do a lot more than tickle) so there WILL be counters to helis.
