Fire and smoke giving away your position?
Tatanko replied to Old_Crow_Whiskey's topic in General Discussion
So basically what you're saying is that the true render distance is 100m? Yikes. I believe it, though. I'm sure it will, and I hope so as well. Not everything needs to be rendered at crazy distances, but this is one thing that needs to be visible from a distance. -
I'm not sure how to interpret all the random deaths out in the water. A few I can imagine being bambis pointlessly running away from bullets, but that wouldn't explain some of the ones farther out, or the sheer number of them. I am also somewhat surprised by the amount of deaths recorded out in the "wilderness" on the western side of the map. Kabanino is way more of a death trap than I imagined it to be, but the evidence doesn't lie. Other hotspots seem to include Balota (despite it's nerfing), Chernogorsk, Prigorodki, Elektrozavodsk, Kamyshovo, Solnichniy, Nizhnoye, Berezino, Rify, Svetlojarsk, Chernaya Polana, and Novodmitrovsk. No surprise given that all of this exactly covers the chain of spawn points. We also have the NWAF, Vybor, and Kabanino in the running with Severograd, Polana, and Zelenogorsk as well. All very predictable. What I'm really taking notice of are the areas that aren't dense with deaths: the Gvozdno/Novy Lug and Old Fields/Altar areas, Shakhovka, Pulkovo, etc.

Meet & Greet hosted by [FOG] (Jan. 18th, Sun.)

The quarry (the one at Severograd right?) is probably second on my list. I would have no objections to that place either.I wish the mine at Kamensk hadn't been sealed off, that was a dangerous-but-fun place to gather. -

Since you haven't yet announced a location, I'd like to second Irish's motion for Black Mountain as our meeting point. As he already pointed out, it's not far from a lot of spawn points in case someone needs to make their way over there quickly and you can see it from a distance as well so it's not as easy to get lost on your way there. Tactically... I dunno. It's a mixed bag. Great location for pictures and goings-on, though. -
Good ideas, but I'm afraid they may be slightly redundant, especially as the cooking aspect of the game begins to take off soon. Condensed milk especially would be unnecessary once we are able to combine powdered milk with water; I know they aren't the same but they are close enough in purpose. Stew will hopefully be made unnecessary soon because we should be able to make our own, and there are no shortage of possibilities for containers to keep it in (though again, I realize this isn't exactly the same as canned stew). Buckwheat is probably the best idea of the three proposed items because there isn't anything in the game right now like it. I'm assuming you're proposing it's inclusion for the purposes of cooking? It's my understanding that it would be used to make food items such as pancakes (griddle cakes) after grinding it into flour.

To be honest, it's hard to say what is going on based only on what you've told us so far. I assume, as I do with ALL stories on the internet, that there is at least a tiny bit of exaggeration here as well for the sake of getting your point across. It sounds to me like you weren't allowing yourself enough time to cool down/heat up once you left the more extreme status. Ultimately it comes down to this: in my opinion, it seems to be working correctly just as BigMike already said. I wouldn't say it's working perfectly, but it's a lot closer to the mark than where we were six months ago.

It's what I live for  Oddly enough, this is the first game I've ever really cared to take pictures of. It's just such a unique experience that it begs to be documented and shared.

First of all, thank you! As to your question: I guess I hadn't even thought about that part :p By default, if you have the Steam overlay enabled, it's the F12 key to take a screenshot. It then stores all of your screenshots in a particular folder in the Steam directory on your hard drive. I can't speak for editing because I don't edit my screenshots, but it is something I need to re-learn how to do sometime soon.

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/216996-status-report-week-of-08-dec-14/ Thank you for actually bothering to look into this instead of just playing stupid like some people. This is exactly what I was going to post. This thread can be locked now, in my opinion -- the OP got his question answered and there really isn't anything else to discuss since it hasn't been formally announced when it will occur.

I had never thought of doing that, even after observing the effects of putting guts on the fire. I didn't realize that putting hot items in your inventory had any effect on your body temperature -- is this true of all items, or just guts in particular?

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/214550-cooling-off/ http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215374-using-bottled-water-to-cool-off/ http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215996-cool-yourself-by-pouring-water-on-your-face-from-a-water-bottle/ http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/216170-need-more-and-better-ways-to-cool-off/ I am not the first person to suggest this idea technically, however no one else I've seen has discussed this as a multi-purpose/general mechanic. I found four other threads that discussed using waterbottles and canteens as a way of cooling off, however I think the water pouring mechanic can be put to fuller use than that. In addition to being able to pour water on yourself, I feel that you should be able to pour it on basically anything. Simply dumping out a bottle of water should be an option in case you accidentally put contaminated water in it. Along the same lines as cooling yourself off, you could cool off other players by dumping water on them as well (say, if they are unconscious from hyperthermia). You could also be required to pour water on a campfire in order to put it out completely, instead of simply "removing" the wood from the campfire. Pouring water could also be used to clean off dirty food or clothing before you use it. I'm sure there are more uses than what I'm thinking of right now, but there is definitely a need for this mechanic and it could be used a lot of different ways.

Ahh, okay. I will readily admit that Berezino is not a place I'm heavy on knowledge of due to the extremely hostile environment that keeps me away from there most of the time.

Are we talking about the junkyard near Novy Sobor? I love that place! I'm usually at least somewhat geared by the time I make it there, but I always leave with something useful. http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Junkyard_(Novy_Sobor)

Yeah, I was really disappointed to see that the brand new industrial building they added to the mine at Kamensk and the quarry at Severograd can't even be entered. They went through all that trouble designing a new building and didn't even give it an interior :|

There are four new locations that have yet to be implemented fully: Nagornoe, Smirnovo, Tisy, and the military base associated with Tisy in the extreme northwest. Smirnovo is directly north of Novo, up on the hill "behind" the city hall building. Tisy has actually been implemented already in an unfinished state if you want to take a look. That goes for you too, Irish... did you know Tisy was in as well? :) http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/218082-052-map-change-bonus-round-tisy/ By the way, I agree. The new little villages up north are awesome. Krasnoe and Berezhki are at the top of the scale for "size versus visual impact." ;)

That's what gave me the idea initially: medical uses. It occurred to me that if a player had passed out due to hyperthermia, there would be no way of cooling them down beyond removing their clothing and letting the environment lower their temperature; if it were already a warm time of year to begin with that wouldn't be nearly enough to cool them down. Being able to pour water on them would cool them down a lot faster, and could mean the difference between life and death.

I'm not at all surprised that we didn't get a new Experimental build today. Think about the sheer amount of stuff that was included in 0.52 right before the holiday break -- it was likely a huge dump of everything they had been working on up to that point, aside from major projects. I'm not even really sure what 0.53 will bring, to be honest (though I could make some guesses). They will need some time to finish new things for us to test, and it's only been a couple of days.

Really good shots xCAPx! Is the first one Kumyrna by chance? When I was compiling my "Best of 2014" last week, I came across a screenshot of my own that looks almost identical to that (but was taken back in March before I got good at this...) Loving that night shot. The combination of starry sky and purple clouds looks great!

That's what I'm thinking! Or, alternatively, "Hey, could you put out that fire for me? Here's a canteen full of water to put it out with." WOOSH! :)
-
That would be ideal, for sure. Many, many possibilities if so.

Not sure that trains are something they plan on implementing; the tracks were highlighted on that map because they hadn't yet added the little electrical lines (or whatever) running along the tracks up to that point. At least that's my guess anyway given the timeline. Also, yes, new military base :p It's speculated that it will contain the prison complex that's been leaked a number of times. The "new" North has a lot to offer. If you've never been up there (really?) then you have a LOT to see. Not just towns either: all kinds of interesting things at the tops of mountains, a new castle, the "return" of Pobeda Dam, etc.

Well said! :)
