Indeed. I just made some significant "updates" to the Wildlife section of the wiki thanks to our discussion and all the hunting I've been doing the last few days. Still have some hunting left to do for science, though :)

Thanks for the tip. I'm thinking Msta is where I got one as well, but for some reason I'm picturing somewhere else in my head. Oh well, that's where I'll be looking this evening. I'd like to track another down for exactly the reason you mentioned in your "FYI" -- they drop boar steaks. I wanted to try and kill several to confirm it for myself since drops can be a little variable. I'm trying to confirm either the existence or non-existence of pork legs in the game. So far as I can tell, they've never been in the game; the only reference I can find is the February dev blog video that Dean made about a year ago. In that video, they used the same model that we now see for rabbit legs... but I don't think I've ever seen a pork leg drop from either a boar or pig.

I'm thinking something along the lines of my Guide to Screenshots or this medical guide used by the RRF, but in a format that suits the subject material (which there will obviously be a LOT of). I'm also always in favor of adding to the wiki as well, which I try to do from time to time as I learn new things and as things get added or change. EDIT: While I'm at it, question for you: where have you had luck finding domestic pigs? I can't for the life of me remember where I killed mine. I have screenshots, but they're all looking at the ground and don't provide any context for me to figure out where I was :p

Hmm. I feel like a full-on wiki would be unnecessary (since we have a wiki already), but a standalone (no pun intended) guide specific to survival and living off the land would definitely be of use to people I think. Let's talk again in a month or two and see where hunting & cooking are at. :) I would support the idea of a PvE server for outdoorsmen.

    FOG Meet & Greet (1/18)

This is a thread to share pictures and videos if you attended the event. A few of mine are below, the rest are at the link. Enjoy! http://imgur.com/a/cSfIl

That's where I'm at with this, too. Inconclusive. More research must be done.

Goats and chickens are most easily found at Msta. That seems to be the consensus anyway. As for rabbits, see my post (#10 in this thread): http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/219080-the-master-outdoorsman-club/?p=2201686

    FOG Meet & Greet (1/18)

It's been near the top of the General Discussion sub-forum for like a week :p This was admittedly much better planned than my holiday social at Skalisty Island. We had all had a good time I think. At one point, started by one particularly generous person, everyone left their excess gear on the first floor of the castle tower. It was kind of like an impromptu take-a-penny-leave-a-penny situation and it was great.
  9. Had a great time meeting everyone. I'm going to start a thread in the Gallery if anyone wants to share screenshots or videos :) EDIT: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/219160-fog-meet-greet-118/

Shrub Rocketeer... is that you? Good to hear! I'll have to head back to that valley to realize my dream of hunting rabbits (instead of just snaring them) sometime soon. Glad I could be of help :)

Sardines are super easy to cross off the list, but I can't blame you... I don't spend much time near the coast either. Head to Msta for goats. I've noticed this as well, particularly cows.
  12. +1 to this. I'm still hoping to make it. Since it isn't starting until 2pm EST (my time zone) I can sleep in a bit and still get myself ready for the event. I admittedly haven't played on this server yet, so I'll need to establish a character first. Looking forward to it, though! :)

I haven't observed the animal AI in 0.53 yet personally (I've only played it long enough to check a few spots on the map), but I watched videos of it and it looks very promising. Give fishing a try again, you won't be disappointed. Sometimes I get a little impatient and move spots, but it doesn't take long to get something. Rabbits are indeed pretty tricky.

That's what I'm thinking. It doesn't seem like the antibiotics actually did anything, but it's hard to tell. With normal food poisoning, you just skip straight to charcoal tabs, right? This seems like it was behaving like normal food poisoning, which would mean it's not really a separate disease I guess (or perhaps a placeholder). I dunno.

Went to Chernogorsk tonight for one last opportunity to get a good set with the Christmas trees before they're gone...

Get that goat, Odin! Hit up Msta :) I, too, am excited for more fish. I'm possibly the most excited about the prospect of larger saltwater fish (i.e. Mackerel) that can be caught with a fishing rod instead of a trap. All of this is great advice for new and experienced hunters. I even learned a thing or two! I am particularly thankful for your notes about the stone knife, as well as the info about leather backpacks. Everything else you said matches my experience in terms of where to hunt, what you'll find, etc. I think the best thing you have listed here are the the "boundaries" of hunt-able area though... that will come in handy. As to your question about rabbits: I got mine in the valley below Kozlovka, specifically at 051 114. I placed the snare in a tiny clearing in the grass right next to the poles for one of the large (metal) power lines. I couldn't tell you what server I was on or anything because I'm not sure :( Only took ~5 minutes for a rabbit to appear in the snare though, I was quite surprised. I didn't do anything else special, though. http://dayzdb.com/map#7.051.114

Sardines are so easy, though! :p I'm really excited for them to up the level of difficulty on hunting and make it more worthwhile. Bears and wolves can't come soon enough ^_^ I'm still working on re-completing the list with a bow. My opinion is that true outdoorsmen should be able to survive entirely off the land as well. That's more or less possible now, too. That's... brutal.

Carps are just the fish you catch with a fishing rod; they are freshwater fish (ponds, rivers). Sardines are saltwater fish you catch with a fishing trap in the sea. Both types are fairly easy to get with the right tools and a little patience. Chickens on the other hand... they don't spawn very many places, and unfortunately zombies often get them shortly after a server restart so they can be difficult to come by. The only place I've ever encountered them is Msta.

    2560 x 1440

This is something I'll be purchasing in the not too distant future as well. When I get my tax return in a few weeks I'll be building a new rig to support it, then I'll grab a 2K monitor a few weeks later to go with it. I have 1080p monitor to use in the meantime thankfully. OP: What kind of setup do you have to play on a 1440p display?

    Sanity checks you say? 0.53

It does seem to be a rather minor update in terms of user-facing changes. Those that are present seem pretty minor. I am very happy about the upgrade to animal AI, but I agree that it isn't reason enough alone to play 0.53. I'll check for some map changes and then likely head back to 0.52 where it's actually possible to make campfires :p

Once again this is a case of misunderstood development lingo. One downside of involving your playerbase in the development process.
