Thanks for sharing! I've wanted to do something with the Cherno skyline for a while now, and this is a great example of the look I was going to be aiming for. I'll still attempt, but this will be hard to top :)
-
I've always seen it as the sign being decrepit and the offending letter being "backwards" on purpose as a result. Notice how the other letters after it are kind of beginning to fall off? I'm sure that's not the real reason, but it's how I've always justified it to myself.

The vote is now skewed towards a private shard. I'll let it go on until tomorrow, and then I'll make a decision. Assuming it stays in favor of private, anyone have a server to host it or know of someone who might?

A rainy evening:

As promised, I finally threw together a guide to every billboard you may come across in Chernarus. The translations I'm including were done over a year ago, and I do not natively speak Czech or Russian, so anyone that does please feel free to correct me on these. I'll include a link to the Imgur gallery as well in case you'd prefer to view it in that format or want a higher-res version of a particular billboard. Enjoy :) http://imgur.com/a/WoT8s Alkohol?! Translation: "Alcohol!? No, I'd rather read this book!" Beach Ad Translation: "MALDEN - Come to us!" Beer Ad Translation: "Thirsty Sweet Tooth -- IMPORTED SLOVAK BEER * SINCE 1999" This beer is a reference to a real Slovak beer named Smädný mních (Thirsty Monk). Cigarette Ad Translation: "Černomorky! Always her! -- GERNOMORKANAL" Reference to the Belomorkanal brand of cigarettes. Escape from Kolgujev Translation: "Premier - Ranger Cinema - August 8th 2009 at 6:30pm" Mentions fake companies/brands at the bottom including: Miromax (Miramax), HPO (HBO), Fujyfilm (Fujifilm), and Dolpy Digital (Dolby Digital) Has the following fake cast: Boris Ebul, Ray Moneypenny, Joe Hlad, Grigori Martinez with direction and a special appearance by Andrew Shatterhand Everon Translation: "NATURE - TRADITION - GOAT CHEESE" Florist Ad Translation: "Flowers and Gardening Tools" "Cibulka" means "bulb" (like a plant). Kids With Ice Cream Translation: "Ice Cream of the Future" This slogan is possibly a play on the same slogan used by American ice cream company Dippin' Dots. Megakoncert '02 Translation: "Nestor nogovského (?) pop plays his greatest hits! -- August 8th, 2009 at 7:00pm - FACTORY CLUB TEZ CHERNOGORSK - FACTORY CLUB TEC CHERNOGORSK" Pizza Presto The billboard says "www.pizzapresto.cs" at the bottom, referencing the actual website for an actual restaurant in Mníšek pod Brdy in the Czech Republic (pizzapresto.cz). The .cs extension is meant to imply Chernarus, but was once used for Czechoslovakia prior to the dissolution of that country. Political Ad #1 Translation: "Everything we do, we do for you. -- Alexander Baranov -- Party Elects New Order (Elect the New Order Party)" Political Ad #2 Translation: "ELECT ChDKZ -- VOTE CHERNARUSIAN MOVEMENT OF THE RED STAR (ChDKZ)" Recruitment Ad Translation: "Save Your Homeland -- ( Protect your ground! ) -- Armed Forces [of] Chernarus -- ( Chernarusian Armed Forces)" Sahrani Translation: "Sahrani - Paradise just a flight away..." Soda Ad Translation: "Žlutá Žgrynda -- ...now with raspberry and lemonade (?) flavors!" The "Kolaloka" flavor of Zluta soda is a reference to the Czech movie Limonádový Joe (Lemonade Joe) which parodies the Western genre of films from the US. Spirits Ad #1 Translation: "Liquor Bardak (?) [FUCKUP Liquor] -- Clean Your Pipes -- (BARDAK (?))" Spirits Ad #2 Translation: "Traditional Chernarusskya vodka. -- From alcohol plant - Bardak and sons." Toilet Paper Ad Translation: "ARMASAN -- toilet paper -- solid and traditional" This ad is a reference to the real Slovak brand of toilet paper, Harmasan. Tractor Ad Translation: "TOZER - SEEDER FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM -- 76 Liberty Street - Elektrozavodsk - tel/fax: 578944325 -- www.nove-stroje.cs" Woman With Frying Pan Translation: "Aluminum cookware for every household!" ------------------- Big thank you to Death By Crowbar, Yazar8, nillie, Lord Roro, and everyone else who assisted me in putting together this collection! Thanks to shaggy16 for the additional translation/references!

Started a feedback tracker ticket for this: http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=22561

Booo... I love me some Czech Volkswagens! :)
-
Hmm, a museum. What kind of museum?
-
I wouldn't look that deeply into it. It could be an indicator, and Arma lore is supposed to be canon for DayZ, but I think some liberty is taken in assuming how "recent" the outbreak really was.
-
Very good points, and I would agree with you. The only real advantage of using a public server is accessibility. Given enough notice, gathering supplies in advance doesn't have to be difficult, and I've built that window of time into this process to eliminate that as an issue regardless of whether we go public or private. If we do go with a private shard, someone (or some group) will need to volunteer to host it. Any takers? :)
-
Please do. To the best of my knowledge, this is all of them, with the exception of one that didn't make the cut from Arma 2: http://f-picture.net/lfp/s54.radikal.ru/i146/0908/1d/80491f760826.jpg/htm (second column, seventh one down).

I didn't even think of that. Thanks for sharing!
-
Can you imagine the roleplaying opportunities? :p That, and the opportunity for some crazy violence I'm sure, not even including Abraham Lincoln assassination reenactments ;)
-
If you liked this thread, head on over to the Suggestions area to check out another billboard thread: Unique Locations Based on Billboards.
-
Of course you can't :) I've wanted to see a tractor showroom ever since I first translated that billboard. It must happen!
-
Looks like the poll is currently skewing towards a public server. Hmm. Keep voting everyone! I'd like to make a decision about which server to go with sometime this week.
-
Thanks everyone! Glad you're all finding it useful/informative/funny :) Thank you for the corrections and additions! I'll add some of that to the original post. I actually did come across the "Lemonade Joe" reference when I was originally translating these over a year ago, but somehow that never made it into my notes. Very interesting, some of this lore!
-
Oh, duh. Thanks for pointing that out! :p
-
Bring what you got ;)
-
Someone has to monitor all that poo!
-
Yeah, that's a pretty good point. Almost seems silly to say this, but we need one that isn't regularly full :p
-
I added a poll. I'll give it just a few days to see what the general opinion is, and once we've determined public vs. private we can plan the rest based on that. I'll definitely be gathering supplies beforehand. Ideally, we'll want a server with persistence turned on of course.
-
I'm going to try and add a poll (not sure if I can after the fact?) but I'm pretty much going to leave it up to a vote as to whether it will be private or public. I'll add the race idea to the list. Why would that be too early? It worked out for my last event, and I try and pick a time that isn't insanely late for other areas of the world (it would be midnight in the UK, for example). The event will last for as long as the group wants it to. Archery competition sounds fun! Fireworks will be great :) Hmm... a triathlon, you say? Any ideas for specifics?
-
Take a look at the discussion earlier in the thread between myself and schwaBAM. Not totally sure I want to go private server this time around for convenience reasons, but I'm open to it. If I do go private shard with the event, that would be a great one to use (assuming they'd host us, of course).
