I can't help but feel like a similar discussion has occurred here before, but I couldn't find it anywhere -- so I'll start one! After hitting 1000 hours in the Standalone, I was reflecting on what I had experienced and learned along the way. Then it hit me: I have actually gained semi-useful, real-world knowledge from playing this game. There are areas of my mental capabilities that have improved as well. I can think of two big areas I've improved in: language and orienteering. In regards to language, I have gained an ability to read and remember things in the Cyrillic alphabet now thanks to the prolific use of Russian in our fictional land of Chernarus. I would never claim to be able to read or write it, but I have no trouble looking at something like a road sign or a billboard and knowing exactly what it says. At the very least, it has given me an appreciation for the language instead of my mind simply rejecting it as gibberish :P As for orienteering, that has been a dramatic improvement for me in real life. Running around a 225 km2 map all the time has led me to learning many of the skills utilized by real life adventurers to get myself from location to location in the quickest and safest manner. Although I am perfectly at home roaming the fields and forests without any tools at all, my ability to use a compass has also seen positive development. I was a Boy Scout as a young lad, but orienteering was always my achilles heel; this game has taught me something I was never able to grasp in real life. On the same note, my general sense of position within the space of my surroundings has also seen progress. I wasn't exactly oblivious to the world around me, but my spacial awareness and sense of direction are both massively better than they were 1000 hours ago. I know better where I am -- and I know better how to get there. My ability to remember massive amounts of information has been enhanced greatly. As a kid I struggled to remember long lists of items or locations (such as the 50 states), but thanks to the unending amount of information involved in understanding this game to it's fullest, my capacity to remember a lot about a particular subject has improved. Think about it: there are something like 150 unique locations in this game and I know all of them fairly well. Then there are all of the items, the crafting recipes, etc. etc. Now I ask you: what real life skills have you learned in your time playing DayZ? :)

This Saturday, my friend! :)

What settings should I use to reduce stress on graphics card?
Tatanko replied to vfxtodd's topic in Troubleshooting
Are you sure it's your graphics card that is stressed? DayZ is very CPU intensive, as it is not currently programmed to utilize more than one CPU core. -
Much as in real life, the best way to keep warm in DayZ is to keep moving. All the time. If you're sitting still, your body temperature is dropping whether you or your clothes are wet or dry. More ideally, build a quick fire and dry yourself off. As long as you've got matches and a stone knife, you can make a fire just about anywhere at a moment's notice.

Fellow Eagle Scout here :) Ironically, I never took the Orienteering merit badge, hence why I learned a good bit about that topic from this game. I had 3 freaking palms for merit badges and somehow never took Orienteering  Agreed on the WS merit badge being rather basic. Was it fun? Yes, but I wouldn't count on it saving my life. Way more likely that I'll use knowledge gained during one of the medical merit badges.

Shaking Hands w/Compass & Binoculars only?
Tatanko replied to 8bit_Survivor's topic in New Player Discussion
I see that you already got your solution, but for future reference: not all "issues" are noted with a status indicator in your inventory screen, or even status messages (text) in the corner of your screen. If you fall within a safe range of temperature, there will be no status indicator even if it is affecting you (such as "the shakes"). Similarly, one or several of your limbs can be in pain without displaying any sort of status message; you'll know this by the shaking and the fact that your character will make a painful noise ("Oww!") upon logging in to a server. -
Coming up this Saturday! I need suggestions for (simple) activities yet. Hopefully given today's news there will be a fireworks show finally.

New map changes for 0.55 were finally included in today's Experimental build. This time around, there were three "summer camps" added to the map: one near the quarry in Severograd, a second due south of Novy Sobor, and a third in the shadow of Topolka Dam. Enjoy! :) First, we have the camp at Severograd:

I definitely did not feel safe standing on the dock to take that last picture after remembering what you had told me
-
Sooo is this a thread about changes coming in 0.56, or is this the one millonth thread complaining about 0.55? Because that is what it is fast turning into, and we really don't need another thread for that.

Information comes from all over the place (unfortunately). Your best source of information is always going to be this site because everything always trickles down eventually, but keeping tabs on what the developers say on Twitter is helpful as well. That's where I got most of what I said in my post. The hotfix is mostly intended to fix the issue of loot not respawning properly on private hive servers. As of 0.55, only weapon spawns are configured based on location -- everything else spawns somewhat randomly; that issue along with silent zombies is aimed at 0.56 rather than as a fix for 0.55. What else 0.56 will include is anyone's guess at this point.

They are shooting for 0.56 Experimental on Wednesday of this week, but with work ongoing for a Stable hotfix aimed at the same day, I'm skeptical. If it is made available this week, then I can see it going to Stable at the beginning of May. Sounds like you're doing something you're not supposed to be doing.

Those are coming in the next patch or two. They're already in the files ;)

Why would I be delusional from learning a thing or two after 1000 hours of exploring a game world?

Next, we have Summer Camp Friendship near Khelm:
-
I can't believe I haven't seen more of this from other people, but I found two more camps! Yes, there are a grand total of ten of these things. One is near the pond of Ozerko north of Chernogorsk, and the other is just outside Khelm near Berezino. First, Summer Camp Builder near Ozerko:

Fortunately you won't really need to bring much, we've done a great job stockpiling. As GK said though, hopefully sometime this week a fix for the private shards will be out and we can all loot once more in the days before the event. Neither ;) But for those 2 servers, my only suggestion would be to go where you think no one else would go. Even a small group of houses all by itself in the woods could have useful loot worth looking for if no one has been there yet.

Not the replies I was expecting, but these are highly entertaining. Keep them coming!

Shhh! I like this spot, too. I always refer to it as the "_____ ______ Estate", since it's in the _____ ______.
