If you enjoyed the reference guide, I would love it if you took two seconds to upvote this ticket on the feedback tracker: http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=25732 Perhaps if we give it some attention, the issue of not being able to craft a leather backpack out of anything except a boar pelt will be fixed :)

Thanks, guys! :) Interesting. I hadn't seen much that far north. Apparently I need to spend more time in the danger zone

The Lada is what I somehow missed. I guess I did read that before, but it's been a while. That's a good [short] list.
-
I could have sworn I remembered reading somewhere that this is already part of the official plan for the base/camp-building mechanic of the game. Even after a bunch of searching, I cannot for the life of me find where I read it :| I'm thinking Twitter maybe, but that's much harder to search.

What's the third one, though?? :)

Didn't say that. All I said is that there were many factors. This would qualify as a "factor", no? Other games weren't the only influence, however, but even if they were, so what? People see something new and shiny, so they want to go play with it; eventually they may grow bored and go back to doing whatever it is they were playing before, or they'll move on to something else entirely. People are finicky like that. What you don't seem to get is that DayZ's popularity as a game in the alpha development stage doesn't matter -- at all -- and it will swing up and down wildly for any number of reasons. To say, "It's because it's a bad game" is asinine; by saying that you are demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of the situation and game development in general. Moreover, you've now created a pointless, off-topic battle about something that doesn't even matter and contributed nothing worthwhile to the thread, all while making yourself look like a crybaby. Congrats, that's impressive.

Yes, a new patch came out after more than two months since the last one, and it was a huge patch with positive implications for all playstyles. I guess you stopped paying attention after day one of the patch, because that number is already on it's way back down -- and it'll go back up again when there's another patch. I guess you don't pay attention to trends as well as you think you do. The reasons for the numbers going down with 0.55 are many. To act as though there was one single factor in the active player statistics dropping in the two months (again: two months) after that patch came out is to oversimplify it to the highest degree. You're very conveniently ignoring a lot to make your case here.

What exactly are you trying to add to the conversation here?

Cut a long wooden stick from any tree using a knife, place the meat on the end of the stick, and you'll get a prompt to cook when you're next to a fireplace and holding the stick in your hands. This also works for most fruits and vegetables. That sounds like something went wrong. Either the fire burned too fast or the "status" of the steak somehow didn't change on your screen. It shouldn't need to cook longer than a minute or two, and a 3-log fire should last longer than that. Questions of my own: 1. Has anyone successfully prepared ("skinned") sardines in 0.57? I don't seem to get the option to prepare them no matter what kind of knife I use. I haven't yet tried to cook them as-is. 2. Where have you had luck finding deer? No matter where I look, these seem to be eluding me the most.

They gave us survivalists new means to get up and away from the coast even faster! We'll be just fine hiding in the woods while everyone else does their PvP thing for a while ;) Specifically, Oak bark. Unfortunately, Birch bark will not work to make a hand drill kit. Both kinds of bark can be used as kindling, however. In theory, that means 2 oak bark + 2 sticks = lit fireplace.

These were official servers on the Experimental branch. My understanding is that they were not connected to the hive in terms of loot spawning (but your character seemed to stay between restarts), so what you ended up with was a scenario where the game was working totally normal... just without any loot, animals, or zombies. It was weird, but it was fun. I imagine the same situation but with animals and zeds spawning would be even more fun, along with the means to start a garden and create some shelter for yourself.

Don't know how I missed this shot, but that's great

Where at? 1. It's just a "minor" injury version of a broken leg as I understand it. Not sure how it happens to people, seeing as I've been on 0.56/0.57 for months thanks to Experimental and never encountered this issue. Perhaps I'm overly careful... I dunno. 2. Oil barrels are multi-purposed in crafting. You can now put garden lime in the barrel and tan leather IN the barrel, but I'm not sure if it's actually required to use a barrel? I haven't tried yet in 0.57 without a barrel. As for dying clothes: you can dye basic (cotton) t-shirts, that I'm certain of -- they have to be bleached first, then they can be dyed using berries, bark, etc. I'll include the link to Peter's video below explaining how the basics work. Crafted leather items are able to be dyed, but I'm not totally sure what combinations work just yet; I know oak bark is used to dye leather "black" (more like really dark brown).

That said, I have a friend who is waiting for the ability to control loot before he rents a server. His goal is to have a private hive where all you have to work with is what you're able to scrounge up. I look forward to playing on such a server for the challenge :) The first night of 0.57 Experimental had no loot and it was fun as hell! They just need to give us more to do first; right now your end game without loot is a campfire and roasted apples :| (There were no animals, either, but they would only allow you to craft a few things for yourself anyway.)

I was able to write an entire guide on surviving off the land thanks to 0.57. I'd say it's coming along nicely -- certainly not worthy of complaint.

Did several hours of hunting tonight all through southern Chernarus. I hunted in the valleys around Kozlovka, Nadezhdino, Mogilevka, Staroye, and Msta. There was no success to be found in the rabbit snare, as I failed three times at that. Managed to catch a carp by fishing however, and caught sardines twice in small fish traps. Most importantly: I was successfully able to track down and kill (and document) a boar, a chicken, a cow, a goat, a pig, and a sheep. Did not see any deer or foxes. Once I can track down one of each of those as well as trap a rabbit, I plan on publishing my findings in terms of resources. My ending backpack inventory included one each of: boar steak, cow steak, sheep steak, goat steak, pig steak, fish fillet, and sardines (2). I'll be adding to that collection later. Other highlights from the safari:

PC Gaming Show 2015 - June 16th, 2015 (feat. Hicks, Peter, and Bohemia)
Tatanko posted a topic in General Discussion
Interested in watching Hicks & Co. at the PC Gaming Show this week? Tune in on Twitch tomorrow to see it live. I'm sure there will be video up afterwards as well. If possible, I'll be writing up a little summary :) Live stream will likely begin around 7:30 PM Pacific time (02:30 GMT) on http://www.twitch.tv/bohemiainteract/ -
Just telling the truth! One of the first things I do as a fresh spawn is pick up a small stone and make a knife out of it. From there I can cut wood resources from trees for both a fire and a means of cooking, I can murder an animal if I have to, and I can process said animal if I do kill one. Everything you need starts with one little stone :)
-
No excuses! A stone knife is all you need to skin the animal, gather fire supplies, start a fire, and cook the meat ;)

Number and types of animals spawning appear to be limited in 0.57 Stable, seemingly for performance reasons (since they decided to include some zombies as well). Cows can still be found in many of their usual spots, chickens still randomly appear just about anywhere in fields, pigs (domestic) can be found a few places like Msta, and I've seen goats around as well. Foxes have been spotted, but I personally haven't seen any. Deer may be spawning, but I haven't seen any wild boar at all.

Don't worry, most people are too lazy to make their way up there anyway. I still use Stary Yar as my primary source for trucks. :| :( lol

For now, we have the last major installment in the series. This week, Zelenogorsk: http://imgur.com/a/d8a6O
