What sort of player are you on DayZ? *QUIZ*
deepfried replied to Flagella's topic in General Discussion
Your Result: Survivor 70% You are the all round DayZ player who depending on his mood will choose whether to kill or not to. You tend to talk to people but shoot anyone who appears to be a threat. At least however you don't go around sniping new spawns on the coast. Hero 54% Bandit 40%KOS'er 36% Not too far off I guess, though most of the "interaction" is due to my friends wanting to talk to other players rather than myself, personally I would happily kill everyone, though I don't kill as a rule, just when it takes my fancy, which is nearly always unless the guy is a new spawn. -
I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
deepfried replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
In all my time playing DayZ mod the only scenario where I really felt the need for "autorun" was with long boat trips on maps like Taviana and to be frank I just stuck a coin in my keyboard. But for Chernarus it would seem rather like missing the point, if you autorun then you're not playing the game, you need to keep your eyes peeled for hidden vehicles and tents and you need to be aware of your surroundings and the tactical aspects of the terrain... you do not run in a straight line to your destination, you move from cover to cover, fitting in surveillance positions, you don't do that, you're dead . But, and there is a big BUTT, most of this gameplay simply isn't in the game yet as the features haven't been implemented, no vehicles, no bases/tents, no animals to hunt, and no one else around precisely because these things aren't in yet... so yeah, NOW an autorun key would be neat, but that has nothing to do with the direction of the development of the game, and everything to to with mitigating some of the shortcomings of the early alpha bare bones build. -
Why the dayz formula will ultimately fail
deepfried replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
The huge map is *the* point, its what lends the game authenticity as a survival simulator, its a sizable chunk of life like terrain which is the entire basis for an authentic experience (note I fully realise the mechanics aren't in yet to make that a reality), take that away and you're looking at a large and somewhat janky Cod map. Its going to be hard to appreciate this point until the game is more finished, with bases, vehicles, hunting/camping, properly spawning loot in all the loot locations, large number of zombies etc etc... -
Best way to allow the ability to carry multiple primary weapons.
deepfried replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
A more reliable way of carrying two primaries would be welcome, though I think anything like that needs to be factored into a weight and fatigue system, there has to be a realistic downside to carrying more weapons. Some people don't seem to see the value of carrying multiple primaries... well not all of us play alone, and sometimes its nice to be able to grab a spare rifle for a friend. -
There are simple not enough guns in this game.
deepfried replied to wuffi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
the gun spawns are fine IMO, perhaps a few more civilian spawns, but over all I feel its fine - or at least its acceptably playable for an alpha build. What we do need is a lot more variety, but that will come with time. -
Agreed, authentic weapon damage is pretty much a must for DayZ IMO.
-
I've no problem with heavy weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers being added in but ONLY if there is a realistic weight/fatigue system à la ACE.

Is there anything being planned that incentivizes not shooting on sight?
deepfried replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
So if someone wings you, you don't mind all of your gear being ruined. Hmm, interesting. -
Is there anything being planned that incentivizes not shooting on sight?
deepfried replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Oh agreed, but that doesn't mean that the game doesn't need some balance in this regard. Currently its a PvP game, what it needs to transition into is a zombie apocalypse survival game with PvP elements. -
Well, lets try it and see shall we. OT: yes, everyone is well aware there needs to be more zombies, the only reason there isn't more now is that this is early alpha and the game isn't currently optimised enough to support the numbers.

deepfried replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Yes, that is the best way to incentivise cooperation whilst also refocusing the combat on the zombies. At the moment the zombies may as well not be in the game. -
Inventory effect (carry weight) on stamina?
deepfried replied to Super_Duty's topic in General Discussion
Unlimited run and unlimited jog need to go too, subject to weight. Its just not reasonable to be able to run 10km without stopping whilst carrying a full pack and a rifle. Edit: i would qualify this by saying they should wait to introduce vehicles before adding authentic fatigue. -
That would completely eliminate any effectiveness against server hopping or ghosting.
-
This logout system seriously needs to be deleted
deepfried replied to dokibaxxi's topic in General Discussion
Server hopping is bad. The term server hopping refers to the practice of going to a high value loot area and hopping from server to server to server over and over again so that you can farm the valuable loot... that is a game breaking exploit. -

Do you have a better suggestion? if not then sit down. -
Inventory effect (carry weight) on stamina?
deepfried replied to Super_Duty's topic in General Discussion
I think they should just copy the ACE fatigue/weight system. Would make carry weight a real consideration and would stop the silly 20km/h non-stop sprint. -
There is no valid argument for nerfing the anti-hop measures, all the information you need to pick a suitable server is given to you and in the unlikely even that something goes wrong and you need to go to another server... a few minutes is a small wait in the large scheme of things. The timers are essential to reducing combat logging and exploiting the hive by ghosting/hopping.
-
Uh huh, but thats ignoring the likelihood that there would be a ground zero, if Chernarus happens to be ground zero or near it then you can bet your ass there would be NATO forces there trying to contain it.

why does my character eat so much?
deepfried replied to Spartan5364's topic in New Player Discussion
When you spawn you're basically dehydrated and malnourished, you need to over feed to get to a normal state. On top of that you're doing a lot of physical activity carrying a heavy pack, just some simple math will show you that a 300 calorie can of beans isn't going to go far. Irl eve if you just sit on your arse all day and do nothing you still need about 2000 calories; cross country jogging with a pack is probably going to set you back 6000+ calories a day. Thats a lot of damn cans of beans :) -
Is it better to travel with your gun in your hands or on your back?
deepfried replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
It really depends where you are, if you're miles away from the spawn locations and not near a hotspot then sure, shoulder the weapon, you can run faster that way anyhow. Otherwise, always have it ready. -
Sigh... the one thing they had to get right... stop clients running scripts... and we still have this problem. >.> BTW if someone sees somehting like this, FRAPS it and post it, i'd like to see it with my own eyes.

How often do you die from glitches?
deepfried replied to infiltrator's topic in New Player Discussion
one time i got stuck behind a rock at the quarry, which then catapulted me into the air and killed me. But thats the only time. -
I see desync a lot, I play with friends and sometimes when the server gets shitty it looks like we're teleporting all over the place. Very easy to mistake for a hack, personally i've not yet seen anything that is clearly a hack, not saying there are no hacks out there, just that I haven't seen anything blatant in game.

If it comes to definitions then I think its a question of intent. A bandit will kill people who aren't a threat for gain or fun, where as a "hero" will only kill if they perceive a threat. Thats it really. Hopefully there will be some more in-depth mechanics later on, at least for regular servers, I'd be cool with hardcore staying more "realistic" if that's the right word.
-
Well, at the moment with no game mechanic cues, you can't know unless you see actual banditry taking place. Personally I'm in the better safe than sorry camp. i.e. I shoot everyone and their grandmother. Fortunately for you guys my friends are softer so they often moderate my more predatory proclivities.
