is there a way to switch b/w two rifles without dropping one?
rickyriot replied to bioned's topic in General Discussion
I think this is one of those cross over areas in relation to game balancing versus realism. In real life it's obviously possible to carry more than one weapon long range weapon. Sure it would be a bit clunky but you would be able to, for example, sling an M4 over one shoulder and a Mosin on the other and to swap between them. However if you were to allow that within the game I think you would find gun hoarding would be an issue and that the general balance of gameplay would be affected. -
I've stayed away from this thread as I've actually been given a temporary ban for suggesting people playing lamecore are lesser players with significant personality issues and questionable hygiene regimes. That's clearly not true and I would like to point out that if anyone was insulted or offended by that suggestion that it was said in jest. Instead I'll just point out those playing lamecore are just not good enough to play hardcore, this is backed up by the lack of players on hardcore servers. If hardcore was easier then more people would play it. Ipso facto, my friends.

Yeah, don't worry, I mean I don't think that.. obviously. Just worried other lesser posters may be fooled.

Would you play a game with real permadeath?
rickyriot replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
The problem is the learning curve. Even the most generic FPS has it's own quirks. If you have a game that rewards your attempts at learning how to play the game by not allowing you to learn how to play the game you have a problem convincing people it's worth it. I think DayZ has got it pretty close in terms of permanent gear loss. I really don't like the idea that you can die, respawn, then run back to where you died and loot your own body but as it is there is no real work around other than making the map huge so it can take hours to get from one place to another (and by then you'd expect your dead body to have been looted or the server restarted). Of course a bigger map brings in it's own problems. Without getting off topic from the original question the answer is actually "no", but purely down to the point that it wouldn't reward people for learning the game mechanics, experimenting and exploring. -
Careful Munson, people might start mistaking you for a funny and cool poster.

WARNING for the new berries that are soon to be implemented!
rickyriot replied to crazykage's topic in General Discussion
I feel berries will be used for other things than just eating; such as dyes and perhaps poisons for arrow heads. -
Don't worry OP, I'm sure you believe that the world revolves around what you think and do, however for the rest of us we just don't care. Now run along and write painfully arrogant threads about how you are no longer playing other games.

Stealth kills; strangulation, suffocation or hunting knife.
rickyriot posted a topic in General Discussion
Ok, so I am setting myself up for the serial killer jokes here, but bare with me. You have very little ammo, you have a group of players all tracking you down, you make your way to one of the industrial estates, you see that they split up (in true Scooby-Doo style) and you want to take them out one by one in a stealth style-ee. At present there is no way to do this. DayZ shouldn't be all about scoping someone from 1km or emptying a 20 clip. Stealth kills would also allow you to kill them without any damage to their gear. You know I'm right, even if it makes me a bit creepy suggesting it.. ;) -
Please remove falling damage until you FIX the stairs/ladders
rickyriot replied to thequantum's topic in General Discussion
I'd understand if he wanted to change the game to suit me, after all I'm fucking brilliant, but to suit him? Pfft.. no chance.. -

I like how you blame the game for your clumsy play style. -
Forced headbob for the sake of realism?
rickyriot replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Totally understand the argument and I really enjoy the most amount of realism, but.... ..headbob annoys the fuck out of me, and it's not actually that realistic in the form it takes within the game. So that's a no from me. -
So, just a little warning about possible shipwreck death.
rickyriot posted a topic in General Discussion
Not sure if this is something that has been introduced into latest experimental build, but I was a fully kitted out player that had spawned back into where I had logged out on the shipwreck at the NE. As I was checking out the area to make sure I didn't spawn into the middle of a group of people I thought I saw someone on the lower decks, I was round about the middle on the Southern "half" of the ship. There are areas where the ship has been split where the walkway is broken with a ragged end and it's slightly sloped (I'm talking a 5' incline at most). Previously you could stand on these and look down, however when I tried to do it this time I immediately started sliding towards the edge. It was raining so perhaps that added something, however I couldn't unslide, I couldn't turn around and walk back from it, it was like I was stuck on a sliding hillside. Now those who know the shipwreck and this particular part of it will know that the incline this part has is less than even the a gradual hillside. Not complaining about my death, and it might be a bug it might not, but I'd never experienced it before and as there is no way to stop yourself from sliding off I just thought I would tell others to be careful there as when you fall you are going to die, it's a good 20 meter drop. -
While your adding in content.. can we get some cats?
rickyriot replied to Irish.'s topic in Suggestions
I like disco cat at the far off left. -
who else is excited about the recent tweet from rocket?
rickyriot replied to mjf6866's topic in General Discussion
My reply was in context with an earlier exchange. Personally as the game as it is I don't really go chasing FPS. I'm at a fairly healthy 30+ no matter where I am in the map and that's on a 8320/7770 system running at 1600x900 albeit with most of the rendering stuff turned off. When the game gets closer to beta and the gun battles really come down to single digit FPS/ping differentials then I'll start tweaking everything, but as it is now the Alpha is just a bit too flaky to go around desperately chasing the best configs. Life is too short.. ;) -

rickyriot replied to Irish.'s topic in Suggestions
Normally I would be all for this, but we all know that people would just shoot them. They wouldn't have a "value" in DayZ in the same way a dog would. After all ask a cat to protect you from a zombie and it would be all like "fuck you human, defend yourself. Oh, and where's the food?" This said from someone who is all about cats and hates dogs. -

So your argument that your system doesn't suffer optimisation problems with FPS is to point out that you suffer optimisation problems with FPS in certain places? Good work fella. You can argue all you want but even the lad that posted images from his machine that had 3 x 780's (yes you read that right, three 780's) suffered problems with optimisation. It's a "badly" optimised engine, I really don't know why you wish to debate that. -

rickyriot replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
Thanks guys, seems like it's a bug. I'll maybe check the bug tracker and see if it's been reported already. Could just be something that has been introduced with the new physics and will resolve itself, who knows. Either way, for other players, just be a wee bit careful when going near that area of the shipwreck. -
Nice to see. There is a huge tranche of land from the NW pass all the way along to the train station near Gvozdno that is crying out for content. Lovely to wander when you first get the game but as good as player free wilderness in terms of the game. Would love to see a lot of it populated. Have to admit I thought they would extend the train station area as well as the buildings at 049/023 which is just farm buildings but has the road structure for more content.

Offtopic warning: Interesting/pointless/dull (* delete as appropriate) fact about the Rambo films. In the first one (and the one that is generally thought of as the best film on merit) there was only one death. One. Now compare that to the rest of the franchise. To get back on topic, I suppose with the introduction of the bow and arrow, stealth kills will be possible and I forgot to mention that in the OP, but I think most people get where I am coming from in terms of "hands on" killing. -

rickyriot replied to mjf6866's topic in General Discussion
Oh, you do. Everyone does. Even the best rigs have issues with FPS in relation to other games. To claim you don't is actually claiming you are playing a different game. That's a bit of a "how long is a bit of string" issue. We've seen that a lot of stuff being shifted over to the server, primarily for security as well as synching reasons, means that optimisation is definitely needed for that and I know there was talk of shifting certain tasks over to being core specific, and we all know that the SA client is still considerably slower than the combination of Arma/mod. I think the problem is a diminishing set of returns. I'm sure the devs will keep on chipping away to get it to a reasonable level. A lot of that will be taken up by new stuff being added though, and with the bottlenecking being shifted up the architecture to the server there will be a limit to where it's actually worth the time/money/effort to optimise the client further. Bottom line? I agree with you, it's not like I am arguing, I just wonder if by the end of it all we'll have a particularly optimised game in comparison to other titles. I don't tweet either, but then you don't need to considering everything important will get thrown onto this forum anyway.. ;) -

rickyriot replied to mjf6866's topic in General Discussion
It's not like the client side couldn't do with a "bit of pep", but it'll get swallowed back up by further additions to the game. Essentially it's like money, you spend pretty much what you have, you earn more you spend more. I think the bottom line is that RV and DayZ will never be particularly well optimised. It would need to have been built from scratch in order to accomplish that. -
Thing is what do people want DayZ to be. A military sim or a survivalist game. If it's the former you have lots of guns of differing types. If it's the latter you have hardly any and next to no ammo to go with it. I keep on saying this, but it's true no matter where you base the premise, if a zombie apocalypse was to break out and you entered the land some weeks/months later such is the case with DayZ there simply wouldn't be any guns lying around other than the odd fucked up shotgun in a random farmers shed. There certainly wouldn't be rows of pristine M4's with full mags just lying on bunks of unlocked barracks. I appreciate the need for guns as without them it does reduce the scope (ha!) of the game, but for me and for realism we should all be killing everyone with shivs and 2 by 4's.

most exclusively in US = console gamers > PC gamers

Are we having this argument again? I look forward to the 3 pages discussing in depth the technical specifications and frame rates a console game could run at. -
