Why is der a F****** hide body function!?!?!
rickyriot replied to Fre4krider's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't like it to go away completely though. Certainly if you have a spade there is no problem with digging a shallow grave, even better the ability to put them into the cupboards in the houses! -
Why is der a F****** hide body function!?!?!
rickyriot replied to Fre4krider's topic in General Discussion
You are right, you should only be allowed to do this when you have a spade, but as a legacy from the mod I'm happy for it to exist as I would rather hide a body than let others know I am in the area. I'm guessing hiding the body also helps server load, just a guess though. -

[Discussion] What is needed to make hardcore, properly hardcore?
rickyriot posted a topic in General Discussion
Ok, so we've all read the lamecore/hardcore debates, and that's all for the lulz and of course I'm more than happy to indulge in a little bit of jesting to oil the wheels, however what is needed in order to make the hardcore variant the sort of realistic survivalist shooter people want? I used to play a lot of CoD (when it was good) and the difference between hardcore and lamecore tended to be based around damage and hit range. Clearly with DayZ being based around a military simulator that's not really something that will be a defining factor as all the bullet physics and damage algorithms are going to be the same; ie you are not going to hurt less from falling the same distance dependent on the server type. So what do we need in order to make hardcore a real challenge? Obviously in hardcore the 3PP viewpoint is removed, that's a given so we don't need to discuss that (no.. really we don't, so let's not). We know that certain things will need to be improved in general (sound effects, for example) but those will be improved for both game types. Here are a few ideas aimed specifically at the hardcore mode: 1) First off I would like to see the aiming cursor removed. I've always felt it's been left in as part of the Alpha test build and will disappear sooner rather than later. 2) All water sources are infected. There might be a case where some pumps or ponds are not infected in the non hardcore server, although we've yet to find that out, however for hardcore I'd like to see all of them infected. You can only gain liquid from cans or boiling/purification. Rain collection would be a nice addition to this, but that's open to debate on whether that source would also be infected. 3) Colder, or at least a greater difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures based on the environment (sunny, cloudy, windy, etc) I'd like to see clothing take on a much bigger role. It did so in the mod and I'm sure it'll make an appearance as the Alpha trundles along, but in general I'd like to see the ambient temperature being much less resulting in the need to find more/warming clothing and the need to keep clothing repaired. Food intake would also need to be upped as you would be burning more calories. Fires and other heat sources would be important as would cover and the insides of buildings - it would be particularly nice if we could use the already existing fireplaces of those buildings for our own fires. I don't want to move it so far as the possibility of burning houses down as I feel that would be a step too far (plus just about all the map would be burn out by over zealous kiddies!). 4) Fatigue. I don't want it so you need to stop every 5 minutes but I think fatigue should be more effective. A soldier can run for miles with a full pack and still have no problem processing the information around them and fighting enemies. Thing is in the game we are not soldiers, we are joe public and our bodies should react like joe public. If this means that female characters react differently then perhaps that's a Pandora's Box we should open (no smutty pun intended!). I am all for equality but the fact of life is that on average women have less muscle strength than men, does that mean they can withstand less pain, no not necessarily - after all they go through childbirth. You could also argue that the average female body is smaller and lighter which might be an advantage in certain circumstances. 5) Recovery. We clearly need recovery, and it'll never be realistic in comparison to real life (ie: a character taking months to get over a leg break), but I think it needs to be ramped up somewhat in hardcore. Currently you can go from near death in a gunfight to being almost full health in roughly 30 minutes if you have enough food and water. I'd like to see a case where you take (in game) maybe 10 or 12 hours between that transition. It would provide more to the dynamic of an encounter if you needed to factor in the current state of your character and what possible outcomes if your player suffered more lasting after effects. Edit: I'm going to add a "6" here, apologies to those who have answered only quoting the 5. 6) The inability to see how many bullets you have in a clip from the HUD/inventory. You either count your shots or interact with the gun (removing the clip) to see how many you have left. Ok, so those are just some of the ideas off the top of my head. I'm not trying to indulge in any flaming here in regard to the different server types so let's leave that for the other threads I'd be interested to see if we could get a consensus on the way forward for hardcore. -
Don't want missions but server scripted events would be nice. Weapons drops or heli crashes in the mod were superb things. The initial rush at seeing it happen, to the paranoia of you approaching the goodies, then the panic as you get the gear and realise you are a sitting duck to the final joys of camping the site to catch out those who came late. Excellent stuff.

That still seems ridiculously low. You would have to think that climbing towers is a relatively dangerous task just because, well... gravity. Ok we need to add in that you will have "professional tower climbers", I'm guessing that's a thing, who would use safety gear but on the flip side you'll have teenage male hormones enhanced with alcohol to produce the desire to climb said tower 'freestyle', as it were.

Do you believe people who shoot on sight are terrible at DayZ?
rickyriot replied to GriefSlicer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Not going to read the whole thread, but I will give the OP an answer. No. However if you were to ask me, "do you think that people who KoS are missing out on some fun experiences", then the answer would be "yes". -
The hacker problem seems small in retrospect
rickyriot replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
Online cheating is like piracy (as in the game/movie kind, not the hairy bearded y'aarr kind). It's always been with us and it will remain with us. I've been playing online games for nigh on 15 years now and there have always been "hackers". -
I believe it's already been agreed it's Russian rather than Czech, by people who speak both Russian and Czech. If you can be bothered doing a search of the forum you'll find the thread in which it was discussed.

Really? Huge? Not one for hyperbole are you? If you want a huge pricetag for Alpha check out Elite. Now before you go, "but that's a Beta", the Alpha was on sale for a higher price! Regret? Regret is the wrong word. Regret is for people who have gunned down a family while high on meth, or set fire to a petrol station while naked then stood there throwing semen at arriving police, regret is dating that really fat girl simply because you were lonely and now she won't leave you alone and continually sends you badly spelt text messages about eternal love. Those things are regret my friend. Not spending a few quid on a game.

Right, I'm taking the joke here, but that can't be right, more people must have died from falling from a "tower" (could do with the definition of tower of course) considering the population of the USA and the general stupidity of a populace. There is something like several thousands of people each year who die putting their slippers on for crying out loud. 7 deaths from towers in 2005 can't be right, that would make them the second least dangerous thing in the country, second only to marijuana of course.. ;)

Aspects that accumulatively wear on your patience in dayz
rickyriot replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
In terms of annoyances a lot of these can be/will be fixed as the game develops. I do find the walking up and down small inclines and stairs annoying. Personally I'd like to see you having the ability to do these things at speed but doing so would (1) increase fatigue much more (obviously) and (2) there is a chance you will trip and fall, which in turn comes with a chance of injury. In real life I can run up and down the stairs, for example, while wearing a fairly full backpack but if I lose balance when doing so then I am going to fall over. -
Personally I look forward to playing a game with numerous hard to kill zombies. I fell playing that sort of environment in lamecore would be less rewarding. So with those two things in mind I'm not sure if your logic holds up.

[Discussion] What is needed to make hardcore, properly hardcore?
rickyriot replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
Not bumping this thread in an attempt to get more replies, more the case that one of the additions I had suggested has now been added to the experimental branches. You can now collect water in canteens and water bottles by holding them up in the rain. -
Isn't the map in game a tourist map? Thus "allowing" the names to be in Latin characters. Of course that doesn't explain why the cover is in Cyrillic.

How funny is it watching bad players? Let's hear your stories...
rickyriot posted a topic in General Discussion
Sorry but this is a bit of a long story, so scroll down to the TL;DR if you can't be bothered reading, there is a question at the bottom. It was just such a catalogue of errors it seems unfair not to document it properly. Story is too long, placed it into a spoiler, question now relevant without lots of rambling text. Read the spoiler text if you have 5 mins, it's sort of funny. TL;DR: I watched a guy completely oblivious to my existence until the last moment but he was such an inexperienced/poor player that it was hilarious to watch and he died a comical death. What are your experiences of tactically unaware or inexperienced players that have raised a laugh? -
[Discussion] What is the funniest/best way you died?

> Fully geared up guy > Had logged out on a balcony on 2nd floor house in Berezino (I was in a rush so didn't find somewhere safe). > Respawned, next day, same place, went to move backwards. > Had my hand placed on my keyboard wrongly. > Stepped sideways not back > Fell to my death. -
We are inducting a large number of new people to the team, effectively doubling the whole project. Explain.
rickyriot replied to 360Nation's topic in General Discussion
I hope everyone realises that increasing staff doesn't result in the same level of incremental development increase. For example a 2 person team releasing updates every 10 days does not mean a 20 person team would release an update every day. In many cases, and certainly most if not all of the projects I have worked on, adding new staff initially slows down development. I know this is stating the blindingly obvious, but just in case there are a few at the back that might have missed class I thought it's worth pointing out. -
So without wanting to seem like I am arguing with you, but what part of this... ..is not "smack talk"? Edit: btw, I'm totally fine with, humour is always good.
-
Well it's not really.
-
Thing is the topic *is* smack talk, you only need to look at the OP. If you want to stop people taking the piss, close the thread.
-
Yeah, but I bet you check out their asses from behind a wall.. ;)
-
When I suggested it previously I was met with a pretty blanket "no" regardless of whether people would use it or not. One thing I would be worried about is if the character became a better shot due to training. That I am against. Sure experience might improve your aim in real life, but I'd hate it to turn into CoD where achievements created a rank of players who in one on one battle with the same weapons had a computer enhanced advantage.
-
Heh, yeah, the first time it happens you are like "it's ok, I'm armed, I just need to stop and get my gun ou... ow.. ow.. stop.. fucking.. hitti.... *dead*"
-
Have you taken anything written in this thread seriously? It's a bun fight, stop getting so super cereal about it. ;) Yeah, but that is because I am.. ^_^
