Of course finding an experimental server would help.. ;) ..I'm guessing this isn't a problem on my side and that none of the experimental servers have been kicked back into life.
-
Not sure if I am reading that right, but certainly on the experimental branches you can only swipe with a melee weapon if you have it raised ("up"/spacebar)
-
I can't believe I just now realized this
rickyriot replied to Sinphaltimus's topic in General Discussion
I notice in the change logs it's recorded as a "known issue" that you need to raise your hands in order to swipe a melee weapon, and that's true you do, but personally I think that's a better way of doing things. You should maybe be able to push zombies away with the melee when it's lowered, the swing should only be available when your hands are raised. It's not exactly spot on realism but I think it adds to the melee combat. -
Kill them as soon as possible, even if this meaning using your fists, because zombie aggro is the equivalent of a flare in highlighting your position to other players.
-
That seems to be the case I have just now. I've been a girl, and a black guy in the last two spawns while I was a white guy before that.

Players need an Incentive to value their life above gear
rickyriot replied to 97ADU Doug's topic in General Discussion
That is a skill tree you've just described. ;) I think there are a few key things that shouldn't be affected by a skill tree, and of those I feel maybe stamina and firing accuracy should be excluded. You don't want the situation where a bambi spawning is not able to run as fast or shoot a gun as well as an experienced player as that would give too much of an imbalance in terms of gameplay. IMO anyway. What should be included are certain tasks, like learning how to start fires, do certain medical tasks, ability to operate certain vehicles, etc. -

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, skill tree. I know it's not a popular opinion and I totally understand the arguments against such a thing, I do believe it would add depth to the game and a greater desire to maintain the health of the character. -
Oh, and I meant to add, at present I don't choose my character at spawn, it seems to be random and I'm happy with that. I certainly don't look to commit suicide if I am white/black/asian/female/etc.

I sort of covered a little of this in my "how to make hardcore, properly hardcore" thread (here if you are that interested) when I mentioned that the different genders of the characters should play a part in the game. Without getting into misogyny it's fair to say there are differences in the sexes in real life and they should provide in game advantages and disadvantages; for example women (in general) have less upper body strength, but on the flip side they (again in general) have a higher relative pain threshold. Clearly the gender differences are not implemented into the Alpha and as it's a thorny issue I'm not sure if they ever will, so at present the only difference is the perception of the character in game. Sadly it seems that many male players are somehow struck by a mixture of overt chivalry or machismo when they encounter female game players. They shouldn't, actions and deeds should be the arbiter not the physical appearance or the vocalisation (over voip). However with that in mind it does provide those who are clever enough to exploit other's reactions a slight advantage. For example, if you had a soundboard that generated a "I'm a girl, I'm not very good, don't shoot guys" sample coupled with the in game character being female, then the player could gain an advantage in order to get the drop on them. The "damsel in distress" gambit I suppose you could call it. Naturally if people are stupid enough to fall for it, and I've played online games long enough to know that they are for the reasons given above, then well that's just digital Darwinism in action. Of course there is a caveat in all this. As we know the motorcycle helmet is the best head protection a player can get, it also hides the face along with numerous other items (masks, etc), and coupled with other clothing (bubble/puffa jacket for example) there is a question of just how recognisable a female character actually is.

[Irony] How to get fully geared in less than 10 minutes.
rickyriot replied to sumusiko's topic in General Discussion
I think this just underlines my point to be honest. Those who are firing shots are doing so for 3 reasons; killing someone/zombie, attracting attention or they are an idiot. Let's take them in order. If you fire in order to neutralise someone or something then you have to be paranoid as it's likely that other zombies or other players will now know of your existence and your position. TS/Skype will also play a part of this if the now dead player has friends on the same server. If you are are trying to attract attention then you are looking to get people coming to your location and so will be alert. Finally if you are an idiot well that's just pay-dirt, right? Ultimately unless the shots have been fired off by some idiot in order to see if they have any ammo in the weapon, or just to see/hear what it sounds like, then you are going to run into someone who is waiting for you. If it was the idiot then you are dealing with someone who is unlikely to follow sensible "gameplay patterns" in which case approaching them could result in unexpected actions. So, all in all, my answer would still be, if you hear a gunshot and you weren't the person shot at and dependent on the distance you heard it, you look for cover then you look to see where you thought the shot came from to see if you can find any movement. Unless you fancy a fire fight, I would not be heading blind straight to that spot. -
[Irony] How to get fully geared in less than 10 minutes.
rickyriot replied to sumusiko's topic in General Discussion
This thread should be entitled, "How to get killed multiple times" Anyone who has just fired shots should be the most paranoid person in the game, only slightly less paranoid than those who heard the shots but weren't actually shot at. If you've killed someone from that shot you should be at an uber level of paranoia. -
anti-hopping or why it's useless for the moment.
rickyriot replied to unitedelite's topic in General Discussion
You know something? When I spawn on a server that has been running for a while and loot is sparse, my first thought is not "waaah, waaah, it's not fair people are playing here, I must go and find another server, but waaah, waaah there is a server timer. Life is shit". Instead I think, "ooh, no easy loot, well this will be bit of a challenge" -
Will We Ever Be Able To Have At Least 40 FPS In Cities and Everywhere
rickyriot replied to 360Nation's topic in General Discussion
Little harsh, the 8350 is hardly a bad chip. Granted it's Bulldozer, rather than the better Vishera, but it should still be able to deliver 40FPS dependent on the kit around it. btw, in regard to FPS, I use a (Vishera) 8320, a 7770 and have 16Gb or RAM. All at stock speeds and the RAM is cheap (and thus slow) and it seems to depend on the DayZ build how good my framerates are. I run at 1600x900 and with a lot of the eye candy off, but that's more a legacy from the original releases. I used to optimise with every build that is released but it seems to change with every one, sometimes I'll get 40+ sometimes 20+. Ultimately I've stopped bothering and I'll wait until they have a settled client with some level of optimisation before going to town with it. -
"ThisServerIsHackerFree" Go, on, give that name a shot, you'll find the server is absolutely full..... .....of hackers.
-
dayzandconfused Unoriginal but I've been meaning to use that for something for a while.
-
I've encountered "hackers" on SA, and I appreciate it's very very difficult to be 100% sure that someone is and it's not a glitch, lag or desych issue, however I am pretty sure it was. However there is considerably less hackers on SA than on the mod, and as the game is still in Alpha and the codebase constantly changing I can only imagine that hacks will be closed off while others opened up. That's just the nature of things. We'll never get rid of them (I've been playing online FPS for over 15 years now and there's always been hackers). However once the game becomes more developed I am sure the devs will look into fixing all the sensible holes in the code. Until then it's just a case of sucking it up. As I say, there is far less hacking in this than on the mod.

Anyone Miss the Mod's Medical and Humanity Approach?
rickyriot replied to MasterPepper7's topic in General Discussion
I miss the mods many buildings you could enter as well as it's flexible and intuitive inventory system... :( -
Disappointed in that. I had hoped purely from the name alone it would at least provide some level of protection.

The biggest issues with the Alpha currently.
rickyriot replied to Forrelist's topic in General Discussion
I still go into these buildings, with a mixture of hope and nostalgia in my heart only to leave with only one of those emotions intact.. :( -
It's quite funny reading what people think is a second person view, however it's quite clear. In the literary sense it's the person being spoken to. For example the first person the addresser, the second person is the addressee while the third person is someone not involved in the dialogue but is a witness to it. Putting that into a computer game context. 1PP is what you would see from your eyes, 2PP would be the person (object) being shot, 3PP is someone watching the action.

The Mosin can't hit properly at a steep elevation?
rickyriot replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
I have made absolutely no attempt to verify the accuracy of any weapon in this game, from the scoped rifle to the baseball bat. They all seem to be "somewhat out" to some degree so I'm not keen to get all worked up about it. At the moment I'm going with the "if I hit, I hit, if I don't, well.. then... meh". I'm sure that as the game progresses the accuracy and physics will improve and I'm sure it's really important to some players desperately trying to snipe from 1k away, but for the rest of us playing the game I'm guessing there are bigger fish to fry. -
will swap mosin with long range scope for sticks!

Looks like you've swapped a sense of humour for Caps Lock usage. :( Aye, aye, calm your jets, big man.. ;) Bottom line, my comment was tongue in cheek, but the thread is worded badly if you want to put forward a thread discussing progressing the issues at hand, simply a list of what you think is wrong that is implicitly titled "what is wrong". -

The biggest issue I have with the Alpha is people telling me what the biggest issue they have with the Alpha.
