    Really no counters against cheaters

How long has this particular "long distance loot" hack been on the go? A matter of days. Give it a week or so and it'll be patched up. Online gaming always has and always will have hacking, it's all down to how it's countered or removed and with the game in Alpha we should expect such "holes" to appear once in a while.
  2. You'll notice all these hack videos are for servers which are in 3PP lamecore, basically underlining that hackers and those not good enough to play the game properly have to result to hacks and 3PP.

    Loving the Amphibia S

Of the new pistols added, the Longhorn, damn.... just, damn... The Amphibia though is a great way to clear zombies in town without making too much noise. Sure the axe is good too and has a certain old school charm, but if you are creeping through a town that might have opposition players as well as zombies you want something that will do some damage at a distance. The only problem I found was the magazine being a complete bugger to find.
  4. When I first started playing the mod, quite some time ago to say the least, I struggled to know where I was so finding a map was a God send. Soon the web based maps started to appear and they were a real help as they allowed you to have them always open on a laptop/mobile device (or second monitor) while you played. Depending on how much you play you start to recognise places and by the time SA was available I pretty much had an idea where I was without a map. Obviously SA continues to add new locations to the map, but even then if you were to drop me as a fresh spawn anywhere on the map if I couldn't give you a rough map location just by looking around, I would certainly be able to within 5 minutes at most. This isn't any way a boast as I imagine most if not all experienced players will be the same. Now granted the knowledge I have isn't granular, and for comparison I will mention the old CoD map Carentan which after playing so much CoD 1 and 2 I literally know every single brick and I wouldn't say I have that sort of knowledge for all of Chernarus, but I could certainly tell you where all the relevant buildings are in a town and where all the towns are located and where those towns were in relation to where I am standing. I've added a few options to the poll as it's not quite clear cut yes/no. TL;DR? Do you need map to get around or find loot?
  5. Pretty much as the topic asks. This is a bit of a long post, and perhaps General Discussion is the wrong forum, but I'm sure I'm not the only person to have thought about this and as there wasn't any thread (that I could find at least) I thought I'd start one. Ok, so Street View. If you are unsure what it is (and I doubt there are any people who do, but there might be) it's where you have an eye level view in 360 degree as opposed to the classic top down map view. For DayZ a Street View map would be an interesting project and while my technical skills extend to being able to create a custom 2D map I have no experience creating photospheres (more about them later) or scripting within the engine to allow them to be created at set points within the DayZ world. The way the current 2D maps work is to "hijack" the mapping system by overlaying a normal Google map with your own tiles. This works well when you are overlaying an older map on top of a new one (a Victorian London street map over a modern London street map, for instance) but then that is a real world location. It gets a little more awkward when you are overlaying a virtual location but as you can see from those available it can be done to great effect. Street Views, though, are a little more awkward as not only do you need to make the 2D maps (which we have already) but create things called photospheres. Essentially these are just static pictures taken at intervals over 360 degrees which are "knitted" together to produce the familiar Street View visual. Here is an example of someone creating a custom Street View using photoshperes: http://google-latlong.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/create-your-own-street-view.html So in summary, we know how to do 2D maps (and have several ones in general use), we know that custom Street View maps are possible leaving the photospheres for the virtual DayZ environment to be created and linked together. As the world is computer generated I feel the logic behind creating a script that would generate the relevant images from the separate points in Chernarus would be fairly "straight forward". Clearly doing the actual programming would be a fairly detailed task and without any experience of scripting the DayZ engine I am perhaps guilty of assuming it's easier than at first though. Time would be a factor, after all you are talking about quite a lot of images to be taken and then joined together (think of going from Elektro to Cherno and stopping every 3 meters and taking a selection of screenshots), however there doesn't seem to be technical reasons why it's not possible (not in my mind anyway). The only thing that would need an investment of human time (opposed to computer) would be to highlight the roads that the "camera" would follow. From there on it could be generated programmatically. So, thoughts anyone? Or is it such a dull thread that it'll be full of tumbleweed?

How well do you know Chernarus?

Not paranoid at all. Now granted in relation to the mod the number of long range sniping weapons in SA is limited so it's not quite so suicidal to run through open ground, but I still follow the treeline or use the terrain to hide myself. Running down the middle of the road is asking to be killed.

How well do you know Chernarus?

I don't think I ever follow roads, unless they are the straightest (or most level) route from A to B and by follow I mean run alongside in the treeline or a gulley so I'm not actually running down the centre of it. In general though compass direction is very easily done either by the sun, the clouds or the stars, so in conjunction with knowing where you are it shouldn't be difficult to know which direction you need to go in order to get somewhere. With regard to the compass direction, I do wish the clouds were a little more random. It's a wee bit of a cheat simply looking up an knowing which way North is.

WHY are the big buildings not big?

To be fair ever since the SA was released the size/ratio of the person compared to the insides of buildings has been wrong. It was less of an issue with the mod, but now every building can be entered it's very obvious. I never play 3PP (because lamecore is for pussies.. :P ) but with 1PP you feel like Alice when she's eat the cake. Even taking into consideration what I mentioned above and the aspect ratio of the person versus the insides of buildings, I actually don't mind the difficulty in getting in and out of doorways as this is because you are wearing a backpack. If you aren't the problems are nowhere as bad. I'm not sure how many players have actually spent time with backpacks on in real life, but I've done a fair bit of travelling and those things are bloody awkward to navigate with. Knocking something over, banging against a doorway or having trouble leaving a doorway is just a way of life!

WHY are the big buildings not big?

Out of interest, is there an upper limit to the size of building possible within the current engine?
  11. So for the last 3 days I've been stuck in Grishino due to rubber banding. I got into the town easily enough, but once I entered the police station I just couldn't get out. I tried all many different ways of exiting the building and then moving away from it, and at different speeds. I have logged out then logged back in again and even swapped servers but to no avail. I honestly feel "trapped" now. I have managed to get out of the police station but now I am stuck in the building to the west of it and the truth is I really can't be fucked spending another 3 days just to get 10 feet further away from where I started. I guess that the devs will have to patch this as it's simply unplayable in parts (as I can testify to), although I should point out that this is the only place I've found it to be so bad - I've rubberbanded elsewhere on the map but nothing to this extent, but until that happens how else do other people deal with this? And what is the longest you have been stuck in a rubber band situation.

Are we ever going to be able to look out of windows?

So basically this.. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/198118-suggestion-better-integration-with-windows-the-glass-type-not-the-os/ Not true, MoH:AA and the original CoD had excellent window implementations that allowed for a very decent range of vision and the ability to shoot and aim from them.

Hey Cap'n, I think your tampon needs replacing. You sound like you're getting cranky.

DayZ moving to new engine - ENFUSION

Improvements to the client is some way off and for me just now it's running like a dog (and a dog in treacle) on experimental just now. I have my CPU and GFX running some way below 100% yet it's struggling to push higher than 20 FPS in towns and even when it does it feels ridiculously sluggish. I've no problems waiting for the product to come together, however I am not going to get though about a reddit post where when asked Rocket says it's a case of ripping everything out and redoing stuff from scratch. I understand it's a necessary evil, and I totally get where he's coming from in terms of future expansion but to me that whole post just sounded like a snake not a ladder (if you get my drift).

Turns out you can vault through windows!

It's a DayZ thing, so basically if you try and do it, you'll fail. Do it by accident and you'll pull it off.. ;)
  16. rickyriot

Turns out you can vault through windows!

You can also jump off the tops of high rise buildings, just make sure you land on the top of a tree and you'll slide down slowly. Judge it right and select the right tree and you won't hurt yourself doing this.

DayZ moving to new engine - ENFUSION

I don't think anyone can disagree about updating the current rendering engine in order to support modern technologies (such as Dx10/11) and this will improve both the look and the efficiency of the client performance. The problem is, of course, with the game still suffering basic problems such as zombies that run through walls and dreadful framerates that it's difficult to get excited about what seems like Rocket stating the blindingly obvious. I appreciate it's a slow process but it's been like pulling teeth especially recently.

    DayZ Confessions

So I take it by that reply you are one of those people. What you are saying is that you can't play the game unless you have "LRS, AKM, whatever", which is fair enough, at least you are admitting it.

How do you deal with rubberbanding? (Exp)

Problem resolved. I managed to get out of the banding area after days of trying only to be shot from some KoS fucktard within seconds. I'm not annoyed that whoever shot me was a fucking dick, despite my language, more annoyed that I was so happy at escaping the constant rubber banding that I wasn't looking for camping little shits.

    The Lone-Wolf playstyle

I believe the 'diagnosis' of personality types is utterly naive and something that should be restricted to 19th century quackery.

How do you deal with rubberbanding? (Exp)

I would say that works for most of the map for me as well. However for some reason the police station at Grishino is a real bugger for it. I can walk in incremental (walk, stop, walk, stop, etc) and it still plonks me back.

    Character Restart (Exp build)

I was suffering this every session lost I was getting, however it seems to have resolved itself. I use the hc/exp UK servers.

    A Wonderful Litttle Bug (Experimental)

You have just logged into a different hive. I've done this a couple of times although it is rare. btw, the word "toon" is a fucking abomination, people shouldn't use it unless you want to sound like a 5yo who plays WoW... <_<

How to locate where people are shooting?

Reminds me of a time at the NWAF when I was shot by someone that didn't do a good enough job at killing me. I always keep all my health indicators as high as possible (bright green) so if I do get hit it has the least amount of damage to me. I had been having a bit of a running battle with the guy (he had started shooting me) and although I had caught him at least once he had done the same to me. It came down to a bit of hide and seek around the treeline to the South of the airfield and he must have seen me sneak under a tree as he took me out. I went unconscious but he didn't finish the job. I heard him patch himself up, and (as I found out he was robbing me of my gear). However within 30 seconds or so I came back to life to see the guy less than 10 metres away looking in a different direction to me and doing nothing (I presume he was messing with his inventory). So it was a simple job to sneak up behind him and axe him to the head - luckily he had left me my axe, although had robbed me of all my weapons and ammo. I didn't make the same mistake he had though. I grabbed his gear (which was mostly my gear) that hadn't been ruined and put a final a bullet to his head before he regained consciousness. Moral of the story, if you are going to kill people, make sure you do. In reference to the topic, I didn't know where the guy had started shooting me from but I knew where he had most likely done so (the small hill close to the end of the NWAF runway, hidden by bushes) using that experience I then used logic to restrict the angle he could have if he was shooting from that spot and sure enough I had forced him to break cover and come chasing me. So, experience and logic combined. Didn't help me after that though, as I shouldn't have hidden under a tree in retrospect. Still, there is a moral to that story too.

    The Lone-Wolf playstyle

Before I say this I should point out I have been in clans since the late 90's, and I've been lucky enough to be in some that have topped ladders. In terms of gameplay I make a good player to have as part of a clan as I am clever enough to know what to do when I don't have "orders" yet happy enough to follow them from a clan leader. I am also good enough with a weapon which always helps. My clans have tended to be mixed, both gender and ages and I don't tend to join a clan unless I know it'll be a good mix of people that I can both get along with and trust. Why have I said this? Well because I want you to take it into consideration with what I am about to say. I play solo in DayZ because in general I dislike people. I find most of them inane, stupid, vacuous, trite and in general fucking annoying. Not that you would know this if you met me on the road. I'd happily give up my beans and bandages should I bump into you. We'll chat for 5 minutes and you'll think, "damn that was a nice guy" and you would be right, I just don't want to spend more than 5 minutes discussing things with you. Sociability is a life skill, but deep down I don't speak to people in real life if I can avoid it, so why would I want to spend time hiking across (virtual) kilometres "shooting the shit" with you about your daily life? Anyway, don't hate me, I'm just not a people person.
