I believe, Noble Savage, the proverb I am looking for is, "pride comes before a fall".. ;) My favourite kill has yet to come. Sure I've been involved in some frantic and down right crazy firefights over the years in DayZ (mod and SA) however I do believe my crowning glory will be when I take you out with an arrow from a hidden location after tracking you down and while you take small value bambi kills to boost what seems to be an already inflated ego.. :P

I tip my hat to you Sir, for it is it the gun-ho types like yourself that provides the edge to living within the Chernarus environment. At present the stealth element of the game is only just developing, but as it does so does my experience at dealing with this sort of gameplay. I am getting better with the bow and while it's obviously no match in a toe to toe battle on the street with someone armed with military grade weaponry my intention is to never be caught in such a situation, rather I will follow and bide my time and strike should it be necessary. In fact earlier today I stalked a similar player who had initially given his position away by firing openly at zombies in Lopatino. Although several of the zombies that he had noised up had decided to attack me, my arrow quickly and quietly took them down, allowing me to continue to pursue this person without them realising I was there. I even had several clear shots at him while he was looting although I decided against it as I am still not entirely comfortable with my bow skills. If I had taken a shot however, I feel the silence of my weapon combined with my cover it would have been difficult to tell exactly where I was positioned. The advantage also being that if I had fired it would not have attracted any nearby zombies. It's obviously not my intention to go around indiscriminately killing people, but with practice and as the game develops I feel that given time I will soon be as much of a threat to those who feel secure because they have a gun (as you certainly seem to do), as they feel they are to me. Exciting times ahead.. :D

With the new lead dev coming from a hunting game background, you'd hope there is move in that sort of direction.

I think it's all about exploring a different way to play the game. I'm not judging others who want to play PvP, after all it's a big map and knowing there are heavily armed types out there adds a little frisson to the whole affair. Of course you could have the same layout as I have above and fit in a sawn off moison or shotgun. You could also just carry an unaltered gun in your hands.
-
I have one rule; "If you are on the coast, get off the coast and go inland as soon as possible." You see the thing is, after hundreds of hours of doing the "gun run" it gets really boring imo.
-
Not really, you can easily find an axe, burlap sack, rope and a knife in the sheds of the smaller towns (more hamlets than towns) with chicken coups for feathers. That gets you your backpack, fishing rod and bow and arrow. Did I find a gun? Yeah, sure. The trade off though is that, in general, you can't carry a fishing rod and a gun. Yes and no. In terms of food the cooked food is pretty calorific and with a cow, for example, you get 6 stakes when they are prepared. You need to find quite a few cans to match up to that. There is also the challenge aspect of it all, sure I could spawn and run towards the nearest airfield and start PvP'ing, but where is the actual challenge in that? Being purposefully lesser armed than others means you need to rely on your wits all the more imo.

Personally I'd rather ditch the Derringer than trade up. I have it there more as a deterrent, all bark and no bite, than an actual offensive weapon. It'll do damage but not much although hopefully enough to spook the other player and allowing me to "exit stage left". Ideally I'd like to be so proficient with the bow as to not need the Derringer at all.
-
Yeah. The question is, is it possible in DayZ. I can't see any key binding possible (after all it's more or less the Arma keys, and no bow there).
-
Thanks. It was put together in under and hour or so. Yeah, I'm really drawn on that. I don't want to carry a gun, but the truth is the bow and arrow are not quite good enough as a PvP weapon (not yet, and certainly my aim isn't good enough). I'm not sure if it would save me but I do feel a little more comfortable with the derringer in there. Especially as it's a hidden weapon. I don't want to sound elitist, if that's your bag then I've no problem with that. I think the more experienced I get with the survival elements (and the use of the bow and arrow) can only help my gameplay.
-
Yeah, it's obviously just experience. I only play in 1PP though and you are right it is a tad clunky. It would be damned useful to be able to craft a target (using paper?) so you can test out your aim.

Not been my experience in the current builds. We've see the food/water cycle change quite a bit between builds and just now I can kill a cow and get 6 stakes and those will last me for maybe 24 hours in game play (not all in one session). Fishing is quite quick, you can rack up 4 or 5 within 20 minutes (real world time). This is an interesting read... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1N5X8AAaz8JMZEMkl_93x0IrjrmpJ6bg28rP_6yKvivI/edit#gid=0

Boiled water will make a come back, as will the use of sterilisation tablets. As you say there are so many uses for hot water. The two things that I would definitely add if I had the chance would be the creation of a simple shelter, like you say, but also the ability to loosen the pressure on the bow and arrow. Effectively when you draw back there is no way to cancel it without firing an arrow. Or if there is one, I've yet to find it. That makes using the bow and arrow as a zombie weapon around town really awkward as you'd want to draw back when coming round a corner so you are ready to fire but then "draw forward" (if that is the right term - I mean releasing the pressure but not firing the arrow) when there is no threat.

Sorry but MoH:AA / CoD 1 were the best FPS' I have played. Obviously this is all in context, but at the time they were at the start of the online gaming era, everything seemed new and amazing, online tricks were there to be first discovered, people would come round to your house and listen to a clan match with TS and they were awestruck by it's visual and audible impact. Don't get me wrong, DayZ is nice, I like it a lot and have played it and mod for 3 years now, but while the mod when it first came out was a real groundbreaking moment, nothing will match the experience I had in the early 2000's with MoH/CoD.

Well let's be honest I'd still get wasted in an encounter with a moderately armed assailant, so I'm not sure about winning. I've not taken anyone out with the bow and arrow yet, I imagine it'll be a nerve racking experience as I'll know if I miss I'll be in deep shit. That said perhaps the lack of any gunshot will help with my stealthiness. Tell you one thing though, has anyone successfully taken down a running stag with the bow and arrow? I've wasted what must be near 100 trying and failed. Standing still, fine, running? No chance.

And... only after proof reading that for 30 minutes do I spot the grammatical error... ;) "rather safe than sorry". Oh, and no snares are there because they simply don't work for me just now. I have tried (damn, I've tried) but just no luck at all. One they have a relevant level of success I will add them back into the layout. I seriously need to get rid of the orange raincoat, but on the persistent server I've been playing on, I've not found anything other than a yellow raincoat.

Yeah, that's going to help when you are pointing a rifle at someone. "Are you [LOST]?", "No", "Em.. OK then.."
-
The problem with retribution is that as you don't know in game the player you are targeting you have no idea if you are evening a score or killing an innocent. You: "So are you in [***] clan?" Them: "No" You: "Oh, er, OK then, you are... em... free to go I suppose" Them: "Thanks"
-
They are not persistent, the devs said as much along with the low damage and frequency of spawning. I was wrong, btw, when I said they weren't on Stable. I'd been playing Experimental and missed the roll out of .51 to the Stable servers.

What are people doing to die from climbing ladders? I've never once died.

Looking for a good server with persistence and sunsets

Unless they've changed it, I haven't been on that one in a week or so (normally low pop) but it was deffo 1PP when I was playing it. -
When will SA allow Custom Scripts?
rickyriot replied to Outlawed Psycho's topic in General Discussion
Epoch was great. Sure it was way too easy, but if you were to take the base building and trading elements from Epoch, made them harder and resources rarer then dropped it into the SA I'd be pretty happy. -

I'd mentioned this server to Caboose but he was unable to find it in the server browser, but there is one labelled M.I.A which has a full 24h cycle, is persistent and is 1PP. I think it's UK based. I tried to find a website for it, but I couldn't and there are sever MIA named clans out there. -

Where are you based? -
The sheds that have an overhang attached to them, you can find 3 or 4 of them piled up generally along with hacksaws. You need to get a little away from busier areas but axes are certainly not rare loot.

Decided I needed a new desktop background, made this (it's not great just happened to be the place I was at in game) but thought no harm in sharing... (1920x1080)
