locked doors can be opened with an axe or a lockpick. That's about as far as we are at this point. If you don't have the game it's hard to recommend that someone buys it in its current state. It can be pretty painful at times.

How to save video settings on windowsXP
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to vojtiman's topic in New Player Discussion
with XP you do not meet the minimum system requirements which are "Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1" You've been lucky to get this far with DayZ. -
In my opinion this game should focus on melee combat

Who decided to make hacksaw's so rare?
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to cheranuscrusiser's topic in General Discussion
no i wasn't originally looking in the sheds you showed in pics. I did get advice on this forum about the building you show here but I was looking inside the structure, not under the overhang portion of the structure. Your pics are a great help i appreciate the effort. I know what you mean about not finding what you're looking for. Me and a buddy wasted a whole night of playing searching for a pen. that's right A PEN! Didn't find one the whole damn night. Next time I played I was practically tripping over them. -

good work Odin Lowe. A week ago i spent like 6 hours searching for a saw before abandoning the mission. -
What gun was your first shooting kill with?

Mosin + pristine long range scope. Here's my write up re-posted from last year: "Posted 26 January 2014 - 02:44 PM After getting fully geared up with my first Mosin & long range scope I headed back toward the coast. Inspired by the wolfpack videos on youtube, I decided to head to Kamy to help some new players... I had met a friend there the previous day and had noticed a large number of new friendly players in that crossroads town (had several decent interactions there) so I figured that would be a great starting place with a high chance of seeing new spawns. I was hanging out in the hills above town and noticed a couple of stray bodies in the alleys between houses, but not many live players. Eventually I spotted a fresh spawn coming up off the coast running full speed so I decided to go down there and make contact, but at street level I lost sight of the guy. I got down to the main north/south highway and saw just a pile of bodies in the street, maybe 10-12 bodies, some of them with backpacks and helmets still on. Fortunately the rush of doom that overcame me caused me to instinctively run back towards the tree line instead of immediately searching for the killer. Because of the body count I reasoned that the killer must be still in the area, possibly with backup. Once I felt reasonably well hidden in the woods I began tracking new spawns from afar the same way the killer might, figuring this will lead me to him as he will also be tracking the same player. Sure enough I tracked this new spawn through Kamy, south toward Elektro, and as he was leaving the Kamy town limits this fully kitted player emerges from a cabin with a mosin and a green mountain pack, following a shrub line and fence with his back turned toward me. He shoots on the fleeing new spawn, firing wildly as bambi darts back and forth trying to dodge bullets and exit toward Elektro. I'm able to contain myself enough to gain a good line of sight, prone, and line up the shot from my wooded hillside. I breathe slowly. First shot hits (I think), second shot is the confirmed kill, a lung shot and blood everywhere. The disgusting husk of what was once a player crumbles just like the zombies I had practiced on. The shot was 423m according to the web map, which was near my outer limits for accuracy at that time. I waited around for a couple more minutes and since the foul creature appeared to have no friends I decided to leave his kit for those he meant to torture. This was one of my most memorable and satisfying video game experiences ever. Without you, KoS halfwits, moments like this simply would not be possible." -
The compass has an intermittent glitch. i'm not sure how or why the glitch activates but it seems random to me. I only really trust a pristine compass, maybe one that's worn in a pinch. Damaged compasses are worthless trash. For me this current build has been the glitchiest one I've seen yet - the devs are aware of numerous compass bugs. A compass will sometimes take on the damage level of the clothing that contains it. So the compass will show pristine but inside badly damaged pants it acts like a badly damaged item despite its item status remaining pristine. This will result in the compass pointing the wrong way. Others on this forum have reported this exact phenomena and I realized it was happening to me for a while on this current build and the previous build. There are other compass glitches that I know less about but seem to resolve automatically over the course of a game session. Check your compass: It helps if you can double check your heading against a known landmark/direction/road pattern. If you know the time of day in your server you can also estimate the position of the sun in the sky and check that against your compass. I've had trouble reading the clouds but some seem to have an easier time with this, supposedly they blow west to east. I'm hoping devs include moss on the north side of forest trees and rocks but im not holding my breath.

Think I found worst person to play Dayz
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to cheranuscrusiser's topic in General Discussion
People without mics can't be trusted. Anyone serious about the game will have and use a mic. Personally I won't kill a guy simply for not having a mic, but I will try to leave the area or tell him to leave the area immediately. I do understand its a risk but sometimes you scare people coming up on them and they can't immediately find the mic key. -
It's around, fairly rare. All the rarest combat gear is spawning at heli crash sites (in non persistent servers) and in military installations.

If you have the gun, mags, and enough of ammo then why not keep it? You already know how many shots it takes to kill things. It's a very quiet gun perfect for in town zombie slaying. I imagine that the power will be increased in future patches. It goes without saying that you'll also need a serious primary and nice backup weapon (sawed off, magnum) assuming you have the space, or simply a fully automatic primary for actual protection. Here are a couple charts outlining the lethality of various ammo types. You'll see that .22 is less lethal than many types but still a very lethal round. We can expect that since the devs have shown their commitment to realistic firearm power in the past that they will continue to have such commitment in the future. I fully expect them to increase the power of all .22 hits across all weapons. They've been very good so far. In practical terms a .22 handgun is almost as lethal as a .380 handgun. http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/handgun-stopping-power

sloppy sloppy sloppy. Play sloppy bro and get sloppy results. -
Personally they're too buggy for me to be messing around with, along the same vain as the ladders on the roof of the apartment tenement building. I've already died simply exiting a fully stopped truck. I've already endured a hill climb slower than walking on foot... This is why I advise staying out of the trucks until they're presentable/playable. See Mercules words also: So what kind of advice is it to stay away from the trucks? I'd say rather good advice if your goal is survival.
-
Best not to even bother with trucks in the current build. It will only lead to suffering.

This poll is useless without "boredom." There's really not a lot to do in game at this point. People resort to death and torture to spice up this running/looting sim. I don't KOS but I would have nothing to do in game once geared up if there were no KOS to hunt down and punish.

I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT!(TO AN EXTENT)
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to zenie250's topic in General Discussion
I didn't know this. Devs should maybe get rid of the dot for melee? -
Is this a joke? I have a hard time believing that people care about this gear shopping thing to actually do anything about it.

I did a little daytime experiment in Stolichny where I lit a fire in town and went up on the hillside to see what I could see of it. The fire was very bright and obvious immediately around the animation. However I got to a hiding place 250m away from the fire and turned around and saw... nothing. No smoke and no flames. It wasn't brighter near the fire or anything. I truly expected to see a huge column of smoke. All my graphical settings are maxed out btw. Has anyone else experimented with fire draw distance in the current build? Would the results be different at night or do fires "go out" after a couple hundred meters?

Fire and smoke giving away your position?
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to Old_Crow_Whiskey's topic in General Discussion
^ Even better if it gets cold at night. It would force players to get indoors, make a fire, or trade out that tactical t shirt for puffy coat. I'm certain the developers won't let us down when it comes to the role fire plays in this game during beta and release. I just made the dayz equivalent of a bonfire and it didn't make me dry after about 5 minutes of sitting at it. Looks like draw distance isn't the only thing that needs tweaking. -

This is my favorite Day Z server right now - I love that there are always clan guys in and it's policed & regularly restarted. Add me to the list - I'll definitely be in the server Sunday so I may as well walk on by. I hope you guys have a good security plan in place for obvious reasons. Will there be a trading post or is this strictly social? -
Fire and smoke giving away your position?

Well I'll be lighting a lot more fires now, until they fix this (and I'm 100% sure it will be fixed). Thanks for chiming in -
How do you set up your hotbar, and why?
Old_Crow_Whiskey replied to IReadTheAgreement's topic in General Discussion
1. Axe/melee 2. Main gun 3. Secondary gun, sawed off or pistol 4. Bandage or rag (the 4 is right above the forward button, easy to find in a panic when you're shot) 5. Fun/glory weapon/bladed weapon 6&7 are typically food and drink or more medical (friends blood bag/saline) depending on what I'm up to 8. Matches 9. Lockpick 0. Compass -
Sweet justice for KOS. BTW what we're you doing with a holstered weapon? That's city life 101 bro, keep your guard up.

I think i am turning into a KOS type...

Tip on escorting a bambi or disadvantaged player: once you arrive to the outskirts of the town which is your destination, leave them to proceed on their own. Hide and watch from a safe location or move on. Changing the plan at the last minute like this will allow you to help without becoming the victim. Typically when I escort a bambi I have them run out in the open and I'm in the woods or with some sort of cover... I establish that this is the price of my help. I never walk arm in arm with a player that has nothing to lose. Since you have all the power in this situation you can also enforce (by penalty of death) a personal space boundary. Any good natured player will understand and respect this request, and any bad natured player will soon hear the waves in his headphones. Usually you can tell the outcome of a player interaction by the tone of voice and behavior but I recognize this isn't always true. -
Where can I find a chainsaw? Looked for HOURS. How to fuel it?
