You have to choose a corner to do the stuff mentioned above (except creature's idea).. do all your jumping, leaning out, throwing yourself flat, while you're pointed right close at a corner between two walls, that's the best place (the only place?).. up to now I've always managed to get out even if it took a long while..(like sometimes a LONG time). if you decide to die, take off all your clothes and see if you get cold, if you do cool down, hypothermia will kill you faster than starvation. Or try Trusted Medics of the Wasteland - they might be able to send a medic to put you out of your suffering. Good people. Find them on the forums: TMW

What are your biggest concerns and fears regarding the near/far future of the game?
pilgrim* replied to joe_mcentire's topic in General Discussion
The modding community should start out with ArmA if you want mil sim You should stay away from the popular DayZ SA if you don't like "casual noobs" We have unrealistic weapon behavior AND unrealistic zombies in a completely NON-historic unrealistic environment... non of this ever existed, nothing in it is similar to any environmental situation that has ever existed .. it's a "game" Maybe you could check up on zombies and tell us where they are manufactured, how many exist on the planet, what are their serial numbers and ranges, what modifications have been produced, what devices you can fit them with, and if they take crosswinds, air-temperature, humidity, and coreolis effect into account when they hit you, please... ? I'm really sure some of those zombies are not completely realistic and I'm certain that some of their hits should have been misses if they had been properly programmed to act according to the exact physics of real zombies BUT DayZ is not a mil sim. please don't take offence at the above comments, I know you are a knowledgeable gun buff and I have no objection to that (why should I?). I apologize in advance if you don't see the humor of your own contribution << game = "realistic guns + realistic zombies + casual noobs" >> The only comment that I really want to take you up on is the quote "casual noobs" So BI is going to pander to "casual noobs" and wreck DayZ SA ? When ? it seems one of your favorite concepts - the "influx of casual noobs" I could reply "who the hell do you think you are?" but I apologize (again) in advance for even thinking such a thing. It was the first thing that came into my head when I read "casual noobs".. And a day later it's STILL the thing that comes into my head.. so I thought I ought to mention it. Sorry. xx pilgrim (casual noob, 945 hours) -

Public server admins. -
here's a lol for you playerz gamingdeluxe.co.uk quote: << ..All of our game servers run on High end Dell server systems and come with full unrestricted FTP, Control Panel, Webhosting and Mumble for no extra cost. Our control panel has many pre-installed mods allowing you to set up many popular mods at the click of a button. It will also allow you to control your Game Server and kick/ban players. >> This statement is on the front page of GamingDeluxe and it is a part of their guaranteed service. It is a legal statement of service. The Bohemia 'Rules for Admins' are not spoken of anywhere on the GamingDelux site. At all. So if you want to play DayZ on the Public Hive, and kick/ban everyone except your friends This is the place to go. I see a lot of admins are very keen to stay on the Public Hive and kick everyone who joins. They do not want a Private Shard, they want to stay on the Public Hive. (where everyone plays) And they want to kick everyone who plays. I am not complaining here (about anything) - I'm laughing. (LOL) . - I just mentioned this subject because I laughed when I saw the the server title - and then the GamingDelux statement made me laugh too. So I wanted to share the fun with other players. And because I got insta-kicked off 2 Public servers in a row (from my fave list, of honest Public severs which is getting smaller every day... and it's not a big list now) - because half of the admins have recently changed their names on my little list from from "Come and Play -Public" to "Piss Off -Public" and the remaining "We won't kick you -Public" servers are full. So I have nothing else to do ATM except LOL I think Bohemia International are being Banana'd IMO (being banana'd means .. when you get the feeling that someone has inserted a banana without you expecting it but you can tell it's there and the people who did it are pretending they did not.. ) enjoy xx pilgrim

The quoted text is on the screen: http://www.gamingdeluxe.co.uk/game-servers. This is the main page for 'GAME SERVERS' It is directly above the list of games they offer - Listed in the 6 "New and Popular" games on the next line below this statement you will see DayZ SA - as I pointed out, this made me laugh. I followed your instructions, You are .. technically .. correct. When a buyer has gone through the steps and has already clicked to BUY, a link half way down the following page sends the buyer back to our DayZ forums here. In fact to: forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/158966-dayz-standalone-server-hosting-rules-server-reporting My post has not much to do with GamingDelux, except that they make me laugh. I was commenting on the GREAT number of admins who have decided to stay on the Public hive and to Kick anyone who joins except the players they want to play with This also makes me laugh. Has no one else noticed this trend? There are some Private Shard servers that are well populated (good!). But they are FEW compared to the LARGE number of Public Hive servers where PLAYERS are NOT welcome. Now my question - As 99.9 % of players do NOT run their own Public Hive server - do you think they should all be kicked out of the game, and only let people play who have paid for the right to play? On this thread, someone states "Why should I pay so You can play?" ? (you'll have to remind me, I've already forgotten who that was, sorry, I've seen similar warnings so many hundreds of times, on so many Public Hive servers, you can't expect me to remember them all) enjoy the game - p.s. do you rent a server? xx

If you have a good link and you're not in the middle of the most crowded place on a full server, then.. maybe look at your PC too.. (this might be useful or might not, its just a thing I do ) These little ideas here help your ping, but mainly they help to keep it stable, so that it doesn't jump around from 30 to 70 (or 170) and back.. There's not much you can do about a connection rout that is not stable (mine is crap, my internet supplier switches me through whole different routes when it feels like it, so I can have a 5 jump route that changes to a 12 jump route and then a 7 jump route, with different pings for each.. in a short time.. they are overloaded at peak hours and and they use temporary space on other supplier's equipment, and shift around.. sometimes I can go 8 jumps and I'm still being shunted inside their own national [French] SP network, not even out on the "real" internet yet ) ..SIGH... But- back home you can do stuff to stabilize your ping, help your framerate, help avoid glitchy action, by controlling background software. Plenty of antivirus softs will check each file, every time it is opened - you know how many files there are in your DayZ installation? First (obvious) you want to make sure your antivirus is behaving - you don't need it saying "Hey, here's a file 'someone' keeps opening called "Image of a Kitchen Knife" it's been opened 20 times in the last 10 minutes and it hasn't changed at all, but what the hell, you never know guys - let's run it through the full Bomb Disposal Routine again, before we send it out for the pc to use.. again." And all those little resident softwares that load when you start your PC - they hang around and from time to time they want to get on the net (without asking you). The most obvious one is: Tell Windows Update to TELL you when something is ready for downloading and then YOU tell it to download when YOU want, NOT in the middle of the damned game. But you can't stop it using up your bandwidth to ask if there are any downloads waiting (and there are every day). Unless you KILL it totally. (heh, joke..) There are plenty of others. Your e-mail might check for new mail every 5 mins, and download all that spam. - And for instance Adobe Reader wants to phone home in case it needs updating.. (oh god?) Adobe Reader? It doesn't care if you're fighting for your life, it just wants bandwidth. Not updating Adobe Reader automatically, while you're not even using it, is going to totally wreck your life, right? If Adobe Reader gets out of date, you'll just never forgive yourself. When I started with Windows 8, I spent a while exterminating these little resident things with extreme prejudice (some are tough). I Hate Them. (maybe not exterminating, just making them obedient) It's like training a dog, you are the boss. - The one question is: Who is in charge of your PC, them or you? In fact I turn off my antivirus when I log in to DayZ - experts can argue about this. I do it. And I also shut down most of the resident softs still hanging around for no good reason, too. If I'm worried, I start a full antivirus check of everything when I go to bed and leave it running. This is just my way of doing things; If I want to update something I do it manually. I check my e-mail when I want to.etc. But If you have a powerful PC it can handle quite a lot of useless background stuff and you can still play. There is software around that shows you exactly what background softs are using your internet connection, so you can track them down and decide if you need them right now. I think it's worth the time just to get to know your pc better, and understand windows - and all the others. Be careful you don't turn off something vital (check the web, ask around) but the advantage is you get to OWN your pc and you know what it's doing. Some people like this kind of stuff. I'm a nerd, ok? oh - and also don't Bittorrent while you're playing, that's always a help. If you search around these forums you will find much info - more useful than this, about optimization, lag, and FPS. There are useful guides. The developers have been working hard on it and it seems a lot better than it was. IMO. The problem of taking out a gun and it putting itself away again, seemed "not uncommon" 12 months ago, and people were saying "laggy servers" a lot, but I haven't had that problem for a long while. If you get stuff like that more than once, put in a bug report, and try changing server right away, see if it still happens. xx

The Server is always right. The Server sees you shoot at a player standing by the tree. Server says you hit him, he's dead. Meanwhile that player (on his PC) might have run from the tree to the garage, and suddenly he's dead. When he was at the tree, or going towards the garage he might (or might not) have heard a gunshot. He's dead anyway. You'll find his body by the tree where you shot him. The point is the Server is Authoritative, it has everything mapped all the time, even bullets in the air. Your PC shows you what you are doing straight away, but the server will correct your PC frequently, to make sure you're in step with what's REALLY happening on the Server. But it takes a (short) while to update your PC with what's on the server (the Server is REAL, not your PC) and it takes a moment to send info from your PC to the server. Whats your ping? What's your friends ping? xx In the best case it's a very short time and the server has a way to "even out" ping so that everything appears to happen at the same time, everywhere. But if you've got a ping of 27 and some dude has a ping of 270 (and changing), what you both see might not be right in phase on your two PCs.. It will be corrected real quick, but there are some moments when you notice. eg - Maybe you are running across a field and suddenly you are a few feet left of where you were a second ago, still running. Hey, there are also 'real' server glitches and everything else you can expect in very complicated multi-user software run across all kinds of machines with all kinds of multipath connections to a server that is in fact a 'virtual' running on one hardware server with maybe a lot of other stuff, several or many games, and sharing space and routers.. so what is your ping ? Are you using WIFI (mmmuahahahahhaha)

Some tips on finding magazines and crash sites.
pilgrim* replied to nillie's topic in New Player Discussion
I'll comment on ( 2 ) first, thanx.. ( 2 ) = completely true - anything in the PUBLIC server name string has nothing to do with what happens in the server, this is the same if the string says "friendly" "clan only" "RP" "high loot" etc.. All PUBLIC servers are the same and only the Admins are different. Zero differences in loot or anything else. You will also see "JOIN=KICK" and "JOIN=CHAR RESET" and "HIGH LOOT" and TEST SERVER, DO NOT JOIN" and "WHITELIST" and "CLAN ONLY" in the descriptions of PUBLIC servers- all these things are strictly illegal according to the Public server written rules, but look at the list of servers and see how many say those things. Many, many, many; many..Everyone knows this. ABOUT KICKING: The reason to keep your "clan server" 'Public' and kick 'not-my-mate' players is simple - firstly it's CHEAPER - A Public server is CHEAPER than a Private server. Secondly, no one "in authority" does anything about it, evidence is almost impossible to prove. VERY many letters on these forums point out, even when proved, no action is taken .. except in the rarest cases. (a Public Admin really has to be a drunken racist sexist foul-mouthed bloody-minded idiot head-banger and keep on doing it, to have his server closed, and probably it's only really closed because he didn't pay his rent either). This forum can do nothing about it - and that is Official - so complaints or comments will be sent to read the RULES and the thread will be closed. It's hard to find a Public server that will accept an 'ordinary' player. (I have a shortlist of 5 medium-ping servers where I have always been treated fairly, and THANK YOU for that, honest Admins) But I like to laugh at all the "clan only" servers in the evenings (try it yourself, list them) who have only 1 or 2 players on them, and the 50+ Public servers that are closed ZERO players ("Wait For Server"), while the REAL fair Public servers have 9, 15, 29, 35, 37, 40 players. (I have a great sense of humor, I laugh at the poor lonely kicker-Admins who think they are playing DayZ). ( 1 ) This brings the second point - WHY keep your server public if you want to keep it 'private' for your few buddies (apart from being CHEAPER)? Well - the answer is easy: Where I live the TEN closest Public Servers (pings of 30-47) all do the same thing. After 10-11pm when the game starts to calm down, the Admins restart the server FREQUENTLY... every 10-20 mins.. This keeps strange players away, and the Admin and his 2 mates can loot all they like with no stress. See? You are a public server but you keep it private for the hours you want to loot, so you can gear up and go play tomorrow peak hours on another PUBLIC server. But If you pay EXTRA for a Private server, you can't do that. A new twist I noticed here in my area - ( rule: an Admin can close his server down when he wants ) - I found a server that only opens after 11pm, and all the hills just South of NWAF are full of tents.. the 3 guys who use it, are hardly ever there - they server hop to stock up their own Public server, then close it down after a couple of hours, to keep their gear safe till they want it. I was gonna put this server address on the forum.. but ... what the hell .... check out servers that ONLY turn up for an hour or so a day - ya get my drift ? OFF TOPIC : A problem NOW is Private servers are more EXPENSIVE than Public and they also stop you from using Public (except as a newspawn). AND the real prob is Private servers are NOT linking shards. If 5 or 10 Private servers linked to one shard it might get to be real interesting. xx pilgrim (I used to worry about this stuff too) ps - I haven't heard an automatic firing for a month or so - out in the sticks players fight with repeaters, shotguns, revolvers, spades.. there is still plenty of fighting, but more talking and negotiating. There could be an SKS or a Mosin around, open sights are fine.. Mainly, if the dude points the gun at you and does nothing hes bluffing he doesn't have any ammo, just hit him with your axe. I think the assault rifle 'mucho-ammo' players stick to specific areas and specific servers. They have a different game. In the 'country', the main problem starting up is usually food, whole towns are looted dry.. I can search a day for matches or a knife, then I hunt. I wear worn gear because that's what I find and also I think it's harder to see. Pick up a sewing kit so they don't get worse. If you need waterproof, a yellow raincoat has 4 pockets (fill them) and then it fits into 4 slots in your backpack (so really takes no space, right), you can drag your hard-to-see jacket/shirt to the raincoat and they change places. If you have a gun or bandages, whatever, in the raincoat you can still use them from your toolbar, even when its in your backpack. Use a shotgun as your main weapon, both barrels at once will totally sort out anyone you point it at in any kind of building. (They have to hit you three times with an automatic to be sure, you just pull both barrels at once (They dead, you bandaging). If you want to be fancy keep a sawnoff as second, you can get it out faster than reload in case the dead dude has a friend who thinks you've shot your wad. A revolver is good for hunting (or emergency backup, but you should not need that) a crafted bow is better (no noise), and you can throw it away make another. keep the rope. [[edit:] The readymade compound arrows are useful if you find them, saves time crafting, usually you can recover the arrow if you hit the critter. .. or the dude - I 'not tried eatin' dudes yet.. hmm.. not too sure about that one.. I'd rather eat a few live frogs and some insects, I guess if I had the choice (ok Bohemia?) worms are FULL of 99.99% protein too, Bohemia, ok? Ought to be able to collect about 20 worms in an empty can, and if ya want you should cook them up, I figure. (bohemia, ya' hear me, along when we have to boil water? Worms in an old can, ok?) I never got the rabbit snare to catch anything yet, but I ain't seen 1 rabbit for about 6 months, maybe they all died? ANYONE seen a rabbit ?? Rabbits used to keep me company, and count ammo, and drink beer in the bushes, but now they all GONE ]] Mainly learn to use cover and MOVE. You don't need military gear at all as long as you can make fire. Keep your axe sharp - In fact 'damaged' is as good as you can sharpen it with a stone, which is Dumb, so your axe is always 'damaged' and rusted to shit - so every time you cut something check its not gone 'badly damaged' and sharpen it again right now! In Europe, if you want to fight, go on THORIUM Server, daytime... do an SAS kill on the first player you meet (.. I mean kill them with Anthing) .. then you're kitted. (sorry people, another long boring post saying stuff everyone said before. thanx for reading and am I wrong anywhere?) xx enjoy -
"SCUBAMOND - Strke anywhere" ?? nice name for a box of matches

maybe this is stupid to ask - but do you have enough space on your disk where the game is installed ? The disk isn't full ? Also - I guess you are NOT doing anything else while you load the game, such as Skype, Youtube, Bittorrent, watching a video, or keeping your browser open, playing another game, or other stuff? - and you have also turned off your incoming virus check. Right ? (you can virus check the whole PC afterwards, if you want) Try a ping test to make sure you have a good connection - wifi connections are not hot, dont use them if you can help it - specially if someone else in the house is also using the same wifi. Use Ethernet. Try to get past the EULA at a quiet part of the day, even Steam gets overloaded at peak hours, and I guess Battleye too. "update paused" is a strange message to get, unless you have a sticky keyboard (like, one of your keys sticks down sometimes) .. you get this message when you use a proprietary downloader and you tell it yourself to pause the download. It is not a message the computer should come up with by itself. Did you check that the DayZ files were all installed OK?.. I explained how to do it. So you have already downloaded and installed DayZ ? And you checked with Steam that it is all correct and up to date ? Then when you start to play the game.. you get the "Install Battleye EULA" . Right ? then you get "download paused" Right ? If that's what happens - make sure DayZ is installed correctly and up to date (I explained how) then do as commanderbash says in this thread - try to download battleye from their site. He gives the link. ps - This is the first time you downloaded DayZ right? You or your brother or your friend have never played it before on the same machine? xx
-
Do you mean when you install the game or after it's installed when you start playing? If DayZ is already installed - what I would do first is go to Steam and check the DayZ files from Steam : To do this ('scuse me being boring me if you know already) In Steam: Go to LIBRARY, you will see DayZ in your list of games on the left. - then RIGHT CLICK on DayZ there, and choose PROPERTIES from the drop-down list (it's at the bottom of the list) - the 'DayZ Properties' window opens. Choose the tab LOCAL FILES in that window, and you will see the option VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE click on that for Steam to check that your game is installed OK It only takes 5 mins and it will NOT harm your game installation. It will either say it's good, or it will automatically update anything wrong. You do not loose any play characters or anything like that. No probs. It's the simple way to check you've got the whole game installed correctly and Steam is in contact with it. Then try running the game. The first time you open it, Battle Eye wants to install and asks you to accept the EULA (license agreement). Just one thing to think of , if you installed the game before the last update, it sometimes takes a short while before Steam updates DayZ with the new stuff... When this happens to me, I open Steam, without DayZ and see if it updates, if it doesn't start real soon, i close Steam, open it and try again.. after 2nd try it has always updated any new material. Then Battle eye should be in phase with the current game. Ya have to remember, holiday evenings and weekend evenings there's a whole planet of folk asking the Steam/Battleye servers for stuff, and they are sometimes a bit slow to get to you. If you still have the same problem, ask again here and explain what happens.. there are many people on these forums who can help (I'm surprised Kichilron hasn't already given you the ABC.. he's usually [always] in before me) xxx pilgrim

Have you tried to Task Manager Stop the DayZ program =fast= (without touching any key in-game) and then restart DayZ and join some other server? If your glitch is like the false spawns for other reasons, you will at least turn up some other place, and if you had gear before you spawned, you usually get it back. Worth trying (what do you loose?). Any time I spawn fresh when I should have gear I do this, and it has always worked for me 100%.. maybe 15-20 times in the year; This method, I've never (yet!) been stuck in a game as a freshspawn when I logged out with gear. Main thing is - don't touch or do anything in-game and shut down the game from windows immediately (NOT from inside the game). xx pilgrim [ edit: asking "were you alone?" was because of the youtube stuff/glitch stuff that folk have mentioned in the thread, But also because I had to explain IRL being no-pants under a bridge with a no-pants girl. Because 2 police logged in suddenly with their clothes on, and torches. I should have tried: "I never saw her before - she just turned up like that" . Sheeeesh, life is full of glitches ain't it? ]

Flies on dead players - was cool in the Mod and that should be brought back. Definitely. But: Anyone heard of any European snakes that spray blinding venom ? Anyone give me a link to a verified wolf attack on a live human ? .. forget Europe .. just anywhere? But I do like the photo of the Dodo (you sure it's a vulture?) Are they very dangerous? I was once seriously beaten up and nearly killed IRL by a rabid hedgehog - ' Hedgehog was foaming at the mouth and jumping up to try to get it's teeth in my throat. I swear I had to hit it with a spade. Round here we loose 'bout 5-6 adults to hedgehog attacks each year. Lucky this was just a lone hedgehog and not a pack. But yeah - mountain lions, we have many in the euro-continent. Mountain lions chewed up my off-road tires when the cold set in; my god, they eat anything that moves .. also look out for tree alligators, dayZ-players, and those red-eyed polecats that run up inside your pants legs. If you plan to go out in the woods remember these things can be dangerous. If you get a polecat in your groin there's no point trying to hit it with a spade. It's nature, my son. It's red in tooth, teeth, claw, mandibles, fire-axe, and beak. We should give thanks for the rain, because there aren't too many tent-eating tarantulas out roaming yet. As you know - If guns were illegal, only humans would carry guns. AND BEWARE: Always check your sleeping bag for scorpions and strange women, even if they pretend to have a reason for being there. Remember these things and you may stay alive xx Pilgrim

Dynamic, destructible buildings? Will they ever come to DayZ?
pilgrim* replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
Your legs are already part of the destructible environment * edit : seriously -if you read what I'm saying I'm NOT talking about 'destructible environment' I suggest different 'states' for doors and for windows. I mean 2 different door and window skins, that's all. When you use the 2nd skin it 'looks' like they've been destroyed, but they are still in place, like they always were. I suggest skins for the insides of rooms so the walls can look as though a bomb has gone off. The photo of grandmother is cracked for instance, and there's a dead cat stuck to the wall, and the wallpaper has rips in it showing damaged bricks.. ya know.. just a different skin. You change the skin after a grenade has gone off from the 'nice' skin to the 'messed up skin' Same for outside walls. You have a nice outside wall skin you can change for a skin that looks like someone has been shooting a heavy machine gun at it (or whatever). When theres a big fight there, you change the skin to show there's been a battle. and so on - I'm saying how you can get buildings, rooms, places, streets, to look damaged WITHOUT having anything destructible. I give some other examples in my first post, The only thing I asked that I don't know about - and might be called "destructible" is - Does anyone know of a way of putting a new door in a wall while the server is running, when there was no door there before? Because if that can be done, we can make "holes" in walls without having destructible buildings at all. - by locating a new door in a wall, then skinning it as a destroyed door. This gives you what looks like a a ragged hole in the wall. However I do not know how difficult it is to introduce a new door into a running game, given (for instance) the path structure. As long as the 'destroyed' door skin was wrecked enough, you'd have the effect of an entry/exit hole in the building facade. But this will only work if it is possible to place doors during the game. I'd be interested to hear ideas apart from the first reaction "impossible". That's about it. I'm not talking about destructible environments, and up at the top of my post I noted they used destructible buildings in the Mod, but I'm not interested much in that fully "destructible" thing, because I've worked out a way of doing interesting minor "damage" that can be immersive/strongly scenic and useful in game-play WITHOUT "destructibility". See how cool I am? So screw "destructible" I have a better, easier, lower-workload way of doing more interesting stuff that looks good... 'destructible' is.... just old.. ps I'm cool because I'm super intelligent and also very attractive. "Destructible"... who needs it? Id just like hear about doors that can be placed during the game, if that is in any way possible without writing a year of code. Someone will find an answer. There is a workaround to this placement problem, maybe the devs or others already know what it is.. if not already, someone will come up with it. xx pilgrim -
Dynamic, destructible buildings? Will they ever come to DayZ?
pilgrim* replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
This happened in the Mod - it was possible with legal DayZ weapons and no cheats, to cause damage/destruction to buildings. Anyone remember the M136 Rocket Launcher ? And the famous satchel charge? According to the Mod Wiki "able to destroy anything in Chernarus" As we still have many of the same original buildings imported from the Mod, I guess the 'damaged/devastated' versions are around somewhere. BUT I agree with ricp though - it would be much more interesting to blow a hole in a wall, or take out a whole door and the frame and brickwork, or bring down the wall of a single upper room, rather than having a whole building become 'a ruin'. It would be great to work close enough to lob a grenade into a window sniping-position, and see the window and the wall blow out into the street. Also would be wonderful for house clearing, you throw in a grenade, and when you move in - the furniture is wrecked, walls pitted, windows gone, and splintered doors hanging off the frames. I know I'm exaggerating the possibile (for the MOMENT).. but 1) "Simple" skin changes could give that 'battle damage' look, either inside a room or on the outside surface of a building, after explosions or sustained fire. 2 ) Key standard objects such as doors, windows, ladders - even if the undamaged objects were not completely similar - could be replaced by a standard destroyed window, destroyed ladder, destroyed single or double door. That's only 4 new skins to cover a whole range of damage to visually different objects - different colored doors for instance. After all, you're just removing the undamaged object and replacing it with basically a ragged edged hole, so details of the original don't have to be reproduced in individual cases. It doesn't matter what color or exact shape it was.. its blackened and rough edged now.. but technically it's still the same object instance in the same place, with the same characteristics, just skinned differently. If it was a door, you can still walk in and out through the totally wrecked door-hole, you just cant close it any more. If it's a window, you can still see and shoot through the smashed window hole and broken bricks where the frame was.. 3 ) Sooner or later the game is going to have to deal with windows, the forums have already brought up the need for more realistic window frames, for shooting and observing, resting a weapon on a window ledge, climbing in and out of windows, barricading them.... so I guess those upgrades will come sooner or later. Therefore Include window damage in that. Doors are already in 2 states - open or shut.. Bring in a third state - doorway with ragged edges. this gives: [1] open, or [2] shut, or [3]empty frame 'open' with a different skin. Looking blown out of the wall is is a third 'door state' and not an enormous change (it's graphics). Processing power to store that info would be tiny (it's a 1-bit change). Same for windows, have2 states - [1] whole with a frame or [2] blown out leaving just bricks. Same for ladders, 2 states - [1]whole or [2] wrecked, twisted. These ideas are serious (so far). And the points above can be implemented, depending on how far down they are on the list of stuff the developers are looking at. I think ricp's idea could bring together several useful development elements that have already been called for in different places in the forums, scattered through the game-play, and we could make a single package of them. * [ I'm on a roller, up to now was simple - so now maybe I'm going too far here.. Explosions and heavy fire that cause the kind of environment damage I talked about, should not only injure you in the standard ways (e.g. breaks, bleeding, unconsciousness, or death) but should add the chance of getting a big splinter of wood or torn ironwork through your thigh or your shoulder. Blast shatters all kinds of stuff, not only the player. This penetration injury, something stuck in your body, needs one more type of medical treatment to remove it (pliers and morphine?.. pliers, no morphine, and shock? , heh, be a man, do it yourself). And you can add military shrapnel to that (what do you think of this ricp?). Something jagged is embedded in your chest?, you can't just bandage it, you need a friend, a knife or pliers, or you just bandage and crawl around not bleeding too much and shouting "medic" Also, nearby explosions can not only mess you up totally (death, or stats dropping right down ) but they can also leave you completely 'unhurt' and not wounded (all green stats), but cause temporary unconsciousness, confusion, inability to act (loss of motor control for a short while, you cant walk) deafness, vomiting, you drop or loose your gun, you get your clothes torn up.. all this can happen without permanent physical damage of any kind..... This would be ... interesting ... a number of the effects that normally reduce your stats could happen without reducing your stats at all. After a while you recover enough to find out if you're really OK ] SO, Back on topic - the effect OP states comes down to; - building or room 'surface' damage - that's a change of skin, - OR, the other interesting thing: making holes in places where there was no hole before the damage happened. At the moment visual bullet strikes against objects (walls, ground) have been taken out of the game, which has driven all the sharpshooters crazy. I don't know the reason for this, except maybe to reduce the processing cost, so I hope and expect that they will return with optimization in the future. Many folk consider it an important part of the game (see the forum comments). My idea is - together with visible bullet strikes, some permanent indication of fight damage would be very impressive. The easiest way to do this is not to mark each real strike position until server reset, but instead to 'patch in' a skin of that building (or street, or ground) with bullet and battle damage showing. A partial overlay in fact. Why? - Because in an area of intensive firefight, the server is already calculating if a player is being hit for every shot fired- and by clocking a certain number of those calculations, the server could overlay bit-by-bit a texture depicting fight damage. - general pock marks, dust stains, bits of street rubble..and put them close to the strike points (it doesn't matter if they are exactly right, just so they are spread around fairly close to the focus of attack). This is a texture overlay. To avoid boiling the server's brain, only use it after fighting has gone on for a good while in that area.. the server is already calculating bullet trajectories all the time, it already know where the player are.. so add a counter to the bullet->player calculation and if that action goes on in that place long enough, drop in a bit of new texture..It just has to be 'close' not right where the player is. To slightly modify a small texture region from 'standard' to 'damaged' is about the same as opening or closing a door, not more difficult. - like those transparent strips with bullet holes that folk stick on their car boots. Without optimization you could loose maybe one piece of loot somewhere on the map every time you did that, so keep it 'infrequent'. OR (and this is quite nice IMO, but not nearly so immediate).. just distribute firefight damage randomly - from time to time - on city streets, just for atmosphere.. so one day you turn up at the supermarket and it has smoke stains over the door, bullet chips out of the cement, and some minor rubble on the steps.. I think either of those can be done (sparingly). But its not as good as emptying your mag at the dude and seeing the bullet holes walk across the wall behind him as he dies. Now that would be cute.. er.. but very difficult to implement.?? Still, battle damage (either version) as suggested above is feasible in my opinion. Lastly, blowing a hole in a wall .. stone wall.. or wooden house. or wasting the cupola on the police station roof.. Those things would be nice.. But let's start with simple flat surfaces (no corners etc). Can a door be 'placed' anywhere in the ongoing game, where there was no door when the server started.. and the door would be in state 3 - It would be a destroyed ragged edged hole? Technically can that be done ? (yes! - we just don't know how yet.. right?) I can't tell you now if a "new" opening can be placed in a flat surface during a server run, without alterations so far back into the code.that would be a massive project. So I think it's not on - same goes for craters). BUT wall surface damage, impact damage, burned or torn ground, as well as the exploded doors, blasted windows, a room's internal wall damage after a grenade goes off in there, and general street battle damage (random each restart, somewhere in an obvious combat zone) or the specific battle damage based on a local firefight intensity count... that stuff CAN be done. And would not need 'much' processing power. Needs developer brain power, but we've GOT that. As a dumb example - In the Mod, one day someone linked all the clock towers to the server real-time, so the hands moved and told the server time of day. Sounds silly, but that was very cool. The clock face is a skin. The server time is a counter in the code. Same idea here in this thread - you link the shots to a counter, and when you have enough shots, you put battle damage on flat walls near where the shots are going. I'd really like to be able to blow out half the side of a room, leaving the wallpaper on view and bits of rubble on the ground beneath, maybe a chair or a cooker too, when we get interactive objects and barricades? We've all seen that type of photo (Saving private Ryan, right?) Everything else mentioned here can be done, and I'd REALLY like to hear from someone with better knowledge than me, how 'holes where there were no holes' could be implemented without starting from scratch again. Anyone? Suggestions? Thanks ricp for bringing this up. Seems to me it ties together one or two things we are supposed to be moving towards, and by gathering them into one general subject - gives more impetus - brings the players together who each want just one aspect.. maybe if we stack them together we will GET better windows, door damage, room damage skins, changing outdoor wall and street battle damage, broken ladders, temporary medical effects of blast, shrapnel and splinter wound treatment, kinetic furniture, smoke, rubble, movement through partly damaged buildings - this is GOOD stuff. It can be done. Now if someone has an idea about HOW (in the game code) TO partly break down walls of buildings - grenades or sledgehammers, I'm cool either way; PLEASE join right in, because this is the way to go. ricp is 100% correct, (also IMO it's NOT a holy grail). ALL you people who want city street battles, and house to house fighting, go read the books see the vids, about Stalingrad, D-Day and Mogadishu, see about smoke, splinters, snipers in holes in the wall, rubble, injuries, grenades, bullet holes in masonry, lost your gun, ladder to the roof is wrecked, you break out through the back wall, your ears ringing from the last explosion so you can't hear your mates, window and bricks blast out right over your head, and now your leader can't move, lying with three inches of twisted metal sticking out of his neck, and you're still coming under more fire ... IRL this is what it's can be - DayZ is not there yet. The programmer's don't need more work - they got plenty work - what they need is a bunch of keen fans and experienced hard assault fighters to inspire them. You want more realistic house to house.. like REAL hell... convince the developers, they'll tell you what can be done. Suddenly they'll know how to DO it. Just let them know you're on their side and you don't want to die clean, you want to die all messed up in the worst place on this mother earth. How do we make holes in walls?? xx pilgrim -
So, can someone explain how exactly THIS little thing makes sense?

AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!! IF you want to test out a gun - go find one and test it out. IF you want to not get shot - learn how to not get shot. IF you want no health regen issues - learn how to avoid health regen issues. IF you want "no worries about food and drink etc ... learn how to eat and drink. If you don't want to loose gear - ( a ) hide it ( b ) win the fight ( c ) don't collect any gear You should know that DayZ SA at the moment is the EASY BEGINNERS version (this is the <Tiny Tots meet the Nice Zombies> Alpha) The Hard version for big people will be coming out later this year Here's a preview of the Hardcore DayZ for advanced players, ya can start training, it's not as difficult as you think: Dayz Hardcore with no worries enjoy -
I agree - anyone who does not reply for 4 seconds is normally talking to their mates first, so it's a trap... Therefore you give them max five seconds, and it's time to decide to shoot or leave Players who type, can type before showing themselves (this is the safest move).. then if someone is typing, I expect pauses in the conversation, so that's ok... But a visible player who does not reply, or who takes too long between replies, is 99.5% always dangerous.. for OP, I think a good standard practice is to stay under cover to type for a first contact, and/or join a group. The soundboard idea is also very interesting, but still for first contact stay under cover/ join a clan. I think there are plenty of clans who would be pleased to have just4me with them, OP would make a good serious addition to a group. Firstly - in clans there are always one or two who never stop blabbering over the mikes (..sigh). Secondly - there are many other players who also type without using a mike, for a bunch of reasons. In the Mod, typing was normal and standard - players joined groups, met people, knew other players long-term, sometimes sat out of the action and had long conversations, and made good friends, using keyboard-only.

So, this is something new that i've not seen before

nice sniping location, but it's overlooked from the tower and the wall on the far hill just saying.. -
You can take another player prisoner by using handcuffs, or by pointing a gun at them and warning them not to move. But that player can escape in various ways, or can decide to fight anyway, whatever the odds. If you loose you just respawn. There is also hitting with weapons, punching and shooting, which is the same as in every DayZ fight. If there are 5 attackers and you are alone, this might feel unfair.; but it just means you met some tough uncaring bad players.. you learn to be more careful next time. There are also friendly players - and evangelists, liars, medics.. helpful players, and killers and bandits. You find out by playing. Apart from fighting attacks, which anyone can do to anyone, there is no mechanism in the game for any kind of physical abuse.. only fighting damage. If you resist or not is up to you. Also you can give another player - "force feed" - any edible stuff.. This can include bad fruit, or cleaning fluid, which makes them sick or will kill them. You can also feed a friend who is weak, or anyone who wants you to. Apart from fighting attacks, this is the only "physical" thing you can do to another living player. There is sometimes verbal abuse, which is not inside the game structure, it's just players saying bad stuff over their headsets. If you are close enough you can hear them - bad language and insults cause problems to a number of players. There are various ways to deal with these verbal things on the Public servers. Myself, I just put those players in the "very stupid" category, like hackers. Generally they are disliked and if they are extreme, actions might be taken. See the forums. There are threads here about "dissing", smack-talk, and bad verbal abuse, read up on it - but this is not the topic you started. Answer, there is no physical abuse in DayZ except standard fighting attacks that anyone can do to anyone anytime, and feeding bad food. Anything else is 100% imaginary or made up. ps - nobody can be naked in DayZ. it does not exist. Check the forums. also if you look you can find a clan who will help you out as a new player, if you want.

You can find hooks in garages from time to time.. also any work buildings with shelving units seem to turn up hooks sometimes.. if I find one i keep it because sooner or later you'll want it, and if you try looking for a hook because you right now want to go fishing, you're doomed... they are not common xx
