My point was simply this - BI is a bit of an unusual company in a world full of games companies that are 90% all the same. You might like their style or prefer some other style. Maybe they SHOULD do full-color progress charts online plus a totally sexy flash-action website with a monthly high-expense professional video announcement, it would be a laugh xx
-
LoL - you're comparing this game to Rust in 1pp? - why not compare it to Doom3, that was 1pp and nobody complained either Oh wait you're serious, let me laugh even harder.

Perhaps you ought to mention Brian was in a plane on his way to Scotland to drink whisky and a bloke was belching in his ear while he wrote that

Hope you don't mind but really personally I'd rather avoid suicide, in game or out of game. I'd give anyone the same advice. Everyone's going to die anyway, right? (I mean - in the Game) It's just the way I am. No offence and go right ahead, do what you feel. :) i agree it was a bummer for Cobain to have sold 75 million albums, lived under all that pressure, and been able to afford all that heroin. Wikipedia says he "had difficulty coping with his fame and public image" and thought "his artistic message was misinterpreted by the public". What would he think about the public misinterpreting his suicide as really cool and badass? (guess we'll never know) Still - in DayZ I think IMO being shot, eaten by zombies, or falling off a roof - is and should be, easier than suicide. Suicide in a survival FPS should mean you really can't make it anymore. ATM it just means you want to go meet up with your mates faster - it's a kind of teleport. xx

Yeah, star-citizen, really nice.. it's beginning to look a lot like Wing Commander with much better graphics.. and multi-user online .. Tell me - how are they going to deal with lag and hackers ? when your brother says < already had more fun with DayZ SA than with SC or other finished games, and it is true. > yes - that is true
-
How about - first time you suicide you get a marker on the hive, then if you suicide again in the next 24 hours you respawn at the same spawn point? In real life any kind of attempted suicide is kind of "hit or miss" dont ya think ? IMO it's a chancy business. I avoid it. :)

I think this is what BI intended when they made the agreement with GSPs

ah, OK sorry Jexter - I thought you meant an RPG but you meant an RPG wow, not "a RPG about Socks" ok.. duh.. xx

^ Yes - I noticed the other current thread on this subject (see link), and followed a comment posted by Steak and Potatoes that got me interested. That thread asks why "BI-agreement" servers are sometimes not reliable, or sometimes change or go offline - so it seems. I only checked 8 or 9 of the "free" <provided-by-agreement> servers that the GSPs must provide, and found a few of them have been hired out to paying clients. This may be temporary, or an error, or a one-off situation. Perhaps this has only happened with one GSP. However, servers that players think of as being "official" servers (this is the wrong name for them) do not act as expected in some cases. Since this morning, the Gameservers list of "demo servers" (Steak gives a link to it) has been taken down; probably to be updated. If it needs updating I guess that list of "open" numbered servers must change ? (unless perhaps this is just a Wednesday night problem?). All I point out is that numbered, unamed servers - like the example you give - with no paying 'owners' - DO change sometimes, or they may be hired out (as public or private, to paying admins), or may go offline, therefore ATM they may not be reliable. I dont know how often this happens, or if it is common or very rare. I explain this on the other thread: https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/225152-official-servers-going-dark/page-2#entry2314584 https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/225152-official-servers-going-dark/page-2#entry2314651 Hope I am not too boring (sorry jayfkay) : What are often called "official" servers on this forum, are servers that must be provided by the GSPs at their own expense, because of their agreement with BI. [edit:] Your example - 129488 - only points to a Gameservers instance - it could be public, clan, admin-owned, open-to-all, "PVP at Berezino" - I see one called "Unfriendly" (lol) - or any other type of SA 'server' that exists. Go to Gametracker and put 129488 in the search "Matching" parameter, you will see what I mean. xx

I guess most forum uses now don't remember the agreement BI made with the designated GSPs. an overview of the agreement should still be in the Forum Info in case players/admins want to see it. Depending on the total number of servers they hire out, each GSP must run a set number of 'free' servers at their own expense - not hired out to anyone. So - the word "official" as used in this thread, means servers with no paying admins, no 'owner' and run by the GSPs themselves, at the expense of the GSP. The GSPs had to agreed to this in order to become " designated DayZ Standalone GSPs " One obvious intent of the agreement with BI is that these "free" servers will stay on line exactly as reliably as any other server run by that GSP. xx

Sorry Steak and Potatoes, but I checked the Gameservers list of Demo Servers this morning (21 Oct 2015) they have 4 'demo servers' listed for UK 173.199.73.101 - 125720 (changed from 129488 this morning) 173.199.73.187 - Atlantis Gaming Bambi Friendly Gameserver - atlantisgaming.uk 173.199.73.185 - 129488 173.199.73.188 - Frillyrazor Server So we see that 2 of the 4 games instances in the UK list are definitely hired out ATM, and not provided by Gameservers under the GSP agreement with Bohemia. I looked quickly through a couple of other Gameserver 'demo' locations in other areas and this seems to be about the world average, but I have only verified the 4 listed UK "demo servers". - since midday today (14:00 UST) that list simply says "No DayZR Demo Servers Available" (sic).. dunno what DayZR is?.. but whatever they are, there arent any ATM (lol). The game instances that were listed are up and running. Note: when Gameservers say "demo servers" there is really nothing in that text to imply that this has to do with their agreement with BI. xx pilgrim ====================================== for emuthreat - or anyone: I generally use IPaddress.com because it gives 80-90% good results (and yo can spot when thy are bullshit). Put in the IP to locate it, then use the Who-Is. Natch' the Who-Is only lists the IPs as being owned by the GSPs - (not the punters who sub-let the IP from Gameservers) - but you can see what company Gameservers hire their server space from in that geo-location (eg - choopa.net; and so find out how much they pay) and tour the web with that start-info to get the other target stuff. For Gameservers it's easy, you can go back to their own Gametracker (a pub&promo site owned by Gameservers) and check the IP to find what paying client ('server name') is auto-registered on their own list: http://www.gametracker.com/search/dayz/ xx

No - official does not mean "hosted by Bohemia" check it out: According to Fragnet - "Fragnet is an Official hosting provider for DayZ" any DayZ server hosted by Fragnet is an "official server" for instance: dayzTV is hosted by Fragnet -the DayZTV website is owned by Fragnet (check the IPs) (check the Who-Is) Fragnet "is an Official" hosting provider for DayZ therefore DayzTV is an "official server" (I am quoting from Fragnet) What does this mean? well, so far it means - what Fragnet says: all DayZ servers are official unless they are pirate illegal DayZ servers Do you have a list of servers hosted by BI ? Or a list of servers paid for by BI, where BI has hired them from the GSPs and BI administer those servers ? Or a list of servers donated by the GSPs for BI own use, where BI administer those servers ? Show me that list please? thanx in advance.. xx pilgrim

WOW.. really ought to have mentioned SOCKS too (sorry guys, Totally Off Topic but I need to say it) A player who claims to be into military kit and does not worry about his SOCKS just does not know the first thing about military life Gorka Freaks or not, DayZ socks don't cut it ya need a GOOD pair of socks before you go out there, else you won't survive to see your first firefight xx

I'd give you more beans Whyherro123, but if you got the SAS Survival book you dont need more beans. :)

Know what you mean, friend - compasses can be mean-and-deadly, and they look so cute and cool and easy to use... (heh) My stupid story: I was in a mountain refuge with a couple of young folk showing them how to take bearings on two peaks, then trace the berings back on the map to find your position now (triangulate?) So we had the map spread on a massive ancient wooden table in the refuge, and every time we took bearings from the door, and put them on the map - it didn't work.. the refuge was on the map and the lines crossed nowhere near the refuge... did it 3 or 4 times and always got the same bad result, the kids were really... really kinda bored, ya know?. Tried from outside further from the door in case of metal in the frame, and if you move the compass over a nail head it spins, so I could tell there were no nails near the middle of the table or under the map... Finally I look under this table feeling dumb (because I know there's nothing under the table, right, just a wooden floor) and there was a solid iron bar across each end underneath the planks to reinforce the two table ends, heh - so anywhere near the middle of the table, the compass gave the exact same bad reading.. so the map wasn't lined up N-S correctly... so the bearings were always off the exact same way.. This is what you get when you try to teach someone a how-to ... (lesson one - try not to make an idiot of yourself) I've seen kitted-up tourists up here (mountains) spread their map on the bonnet of their 4x4 and put their compass on it, and try to figure out where they want to go.... (hmm.) ===== In case you havent heard of it - "The SAS Survival Handbook" is a totally interesting little book - I want to put you on to a good thing - it's pocket size and full of 100% tons of useful stuff about: plants, shelters, knots, clothing, first-aid, animal traps, crossing rivers, snow holes, fires, signalling, rafts, desert.. whatever.. It began selling to the public a long while back and gradually became famous. It's the basic read-it standard do/dont/how guide ( = "get one" ) . Brit military pilots carry it as part of their flying kit. So this is a plug for the book, "SAS Survival Handbook" you can pick one up anywhere, look around the web. It's published in about 15 different languages, so you can get one for anybody (or just tell someone to buy it for you). It makes you think about stuff, ideas, techniques, and it tells you in an understandable way - also there is plenty of (funny and true) SAS-style info such as [bear Traps] "If you must set a trap for a big dangerous animal, such as a bear, make sure the trap will definitely kill it, otherwise you'll be face to face with a really big, angry, wounded, dangerous animal - this will not help your survival" the guy who keeps updating it - Lofty Wiseman - is also a cool dude: [edit: the SAS used a Parang as standard instead of a knife/machete - Lofty Wiseman talks about his modified knife on youtube, there are also other Lofty videos around there (plug): and one for Whyherro123 and Tatanko and yo' other DayZ Dudes (very nice runthrough - the Lofty 101)

Suggestion for putting a pistol in your pants as a holster...

So why can't we put on a plastic raincoat over our jacket or shirt, or whatever gear we wear ? In real life, I've never had to strip down to my undershirt to put on a raincoat.... really, not even once. Has anyone ever done that? tell me about it - You had a raincoat that you could only wear over a t-shirt? You had to take your clothes off to put it on? Good survival gear = an undershirt + a wool sweater or a felt jacket + a raincoat + gloves and a hat - kind of old fashioned but works 100%. Put the raincoat on when it rains. Take the sweater off when you're hot. - (this is not rocket science)

"Understanding Realism in Computer Games through Phenomenology" (DayZ discussion).

^Bororm right on 'perspective and immersion' I think some folk in this thread are mixing up "immersion" and "enjoyable" a lot, and then mixing those in with "realistic" It's not their fault - the games industry does it too, deliberately. But, to be logical, if a game was "realistic" then some parts of it would not be enjoyable no one enjoys breaking a leg, right? To make it clear - I know people who have played Minecraft for 20 hours straight (several times a week, lol) - they are totally IMMERSED, you can take the wallet out of their pocket they just kinda grunt and go on playing, ..oh yes.. that's Immersion but please please don't tell me minecraft has anything to do with Realism. My guess is everyone is assuming DayZ is supposed to be "realistic" and then complaining when something "unrealistic" turns up - like "clumsy controls" - it breaks their 'immersion' But the definitions of 'realistic' are all subjective (that's crazy.. means nobody is agreeing on what "realistic" means, when we all think we know already). - some players cant stand 3pp - but those same players expect to find high powered specialist sniping rifles in perfect condition lying around in the game - other players want detailed medical kit in the game, and complex wounds and injuries, but they like to play 3pp and run with a 50 kg pack on their back - and ... I really haven't decided how realistic are zombies? I like them.. - For me, almost anything STRESSFUL is immersive in this game, as long as it IS possible to get through it sometimes, and that even includes knowing you might not be able to jump over a fence exactly when you want to. -
The server does the bullet-fire-hit calculation and sends the "you are dead" instruction and the "play shot sound instruction" Because games run on UDP (the fastest tx/rx info protocol) you might not get these instructions in the right order, or just might not get them the first time they are sent.. that's exactly what makes UDP so fast. Too much build up of instructions to your PC means some will be dropped so the game can keep moving. The Server is still sending that you are dead but it doesnt send the "play the shot sound" any more. I've been sniped dead and not heard a shot, in front of witnesses who heard the shot, and I heard them moving after the event. Boneboys says around here somewhere that he can fly a copter in an Arma3 scenario at ping 120+ with no problems and DayZ will be up at this standard soon - I don't see any reason to disbelieve him, so I dunno if you can really say a missing gunshot sound is a "lag" problem ... xx

Yes - true-true, BCBasher who would not? I've watched players log in and out every five mins. A Public server claims say 12 players, but in fact only 2 or 3 of them stay more than 10 minutes, the rest keep changing. - and this is the problem.. I also Metagame 100% too because the info is there for me to see - and as soon as I notice a bunch of clan members show up it changes my mentality and my game totally. I probably change location, I change my plans and my routes, if a whole lot of one clan turn up I probably move out of that server, because they're all TS3 together, and there are not 1 million reasons why a clan turn's up in force on a public server on Friday night. They are out recruiting, right?.. nah.. Also, if I log in to a Public low-pop server in the evenings and the player list shows several single-clan members already in place, there's a 60-70% chance I'm about to get kicked. that changes my game too. Some servers don't show the population before you log in. That's interesting.. if you are a survivor, why should you know how many other people are wandering around ? For private servers and TS - There's no reason private server players and TS players should have a problem with "no player list onscreen", because "TS channel" and "private server" are 100% the same thing in the SA game, right? So why is it inconvenient for TS players to see their TS population on-screen while they play? Because an overlay messes your game up more than TS messes your ears up? I don't follow this argument. You can switch your TS listings on and off, too, right? Do TS teams really have to look in the game screen to know who they can talk to on TS? Really ? I thought their tech was better than that. And I guess you have to set your ingame name to your TS name too, or else nobody gonna know who they shot anyway? Wow - that would be almost like playing DayZ the way it was intended. xx

^ Yes - If I'm paranoid I get into any cover, best in the trees somewhere, stand in the shadow against a tree (for safety), then turn until the compass shows me the direction I want. So now, for instance I have the tree shadow off to my left and slightly in front .. then I move, keep the shadows about in the same position, just off my left and in front, and I can scan around for action at the same time.. any time I go around something, or get spun around, I just turn as I move on untill the shadow is back where it was... so you know you're going in about the right direction and you can concentrate on any dangers in the area.. PS - Beanz to Kirov for the roadsign photos...
-
Ahh - so on a tight knit community private server you can't tell who's playing from TS ?.... hmm, I always thought you could.. .. so can I ask what makes it tight knit then? Because - live and learn - this certainly makes the TS and clan community less interesting than I thought it was :) xx

this is a whole can of worms - yo need to ask the weapons experts on the forum about this (you'll get 20 pages of answers), check back through the forums - but here and now it would derail the thread IMO, so I've said enough on the topic of "examine weapons" here.
