Make sure to report public servers that kick for no reason
pilgrim* replied to aurien's topic in General Discussion
Yes - and the intangible items are the loot in the dayZ game = bottom line So the fuss is about = what the DayZ game is, if it is fun to play, if it is fair, what is the point of playing, how to cheat, do games count for anything, are BI wasting their time, is someone wrecking game-play for someone else, does that even matter, why run a public kick server when you can run a private kick server, perhaps people should not play to rules, should players care about the quality of their own leisure activity, why not accept a scam as long as it is on the internet and not "real", does this stuff make DayZ a better game, or worse, what are you paying for, how many admins have decided the SPs are idiots, what can public admins get away with, is it easy to put an autokick on your public server, is it very easy to whitelist a public server, why do they do it, how many players care? = stuff like that _ _ _ ps - I really do use FAVORITES to store my list of unfair servers that have kicked me, because I need that space, there are so many Servers that accept me fairly, in my region are so few I don't need to write them down to remember them https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/231002-tents-and-persistence-keep-out-public-servers-and-the-devs/#entry2329579 -
Make sure to report public servers that kick for no reason
pilgrim* replied to aurien's topic in General Discussion
I use my FAVORITES list for servers that kick. There are plenty of them and this is the most efficient way. Where I live in Europe - if I set my max ping to 100 (usual) or 150, there are so many public servers that kick, that I can't remember them all. I have to search around to find honest servers running daylight, and they might not kick you straight away, So its much easier to put all the crap admins in the FAVORITES list. Then I remember them all and I waste a lot less time. I only have 23 in there at the moment since the last patch (because I'm not deliberately searching, I'm only trying to play DayZ); Some of them kick almost straight away, some are autokick, some kick after a while, some just kick in the evenings, some when they feel like it, some ya never can tell. I hardly ever try to log in 1-2 player daylight servers, so I don't include them. After 1am public servers mainly either kick straight away or the admin's gone to bed and you can play. But some admins turn their servers off when they are not on line themselves to kick strangers. So that's how I keep track of them. If I want to choose one of my real playable good servers, I can look at the 'History' list to see which ones are on daylight ATM - But there are only max 5 (really 3) that I play regularly that are honest, so its easy to remember their names. xx -

Thanks for that Gary. I haven't seen any game past the treeline north of the the "great north road". I thought it must be related to the heat map of player frequency, maybe? It is a fairly deserted up there. Thinking back, the cows I saw near your deer herd location could well have been on a start-up day. Was funny, they were in the field corner south of the pond: I had time to fill a canteen and drink, move south 30 yards and they had already despawned. Definitely not moved off - just left the game. For the heat-map theory - I've quite often seen boar in woods right by towns and villages close to the coast - the places everyone loots through. Probably I've seen a proportion of all the boar I've ever crossed at about 150 yard radius from a police station since this patch. [ The reason I always notice police stations is to get away from them, heh, so I get into the closest woods and 'often' walk into a boar. - and hey, there is a neat trick (not an exploit, a hunting trick) for cornering a boar and killing it with a melee weapon, if you want to try stone-age hunting, I can mail if you want it. On the forum I ain't going to tell. ] I guess the technical problem with animal persistence, is that wild game IRL is found in undisturbed places - in DayZ the spawn mechanic works fine for heli-spawn, because players trek around the known sites all the time. But to find animals in-game you have to do the same cross-map search - this is not much at all like hunting in a hill or forest area IRL. If there was some (or any) relation between game animal spawn locations and the shooting stands, this would be more interesting. Barracks have military gear - by the same logic hunting-stands should have wildlife in the vicinity. The way animals react to a hit needs some adjustment. When hit (not killed) the animal should start to bleed out - and if it is hit it should not ever despawn like other 'loot' until it dies. Also when an animal is hit once it should run to the closest cover, but then stop behind a bush or just in the tree line and not move off. Then you can "stalk' it and take another shot, and either kill it or spook it again. Or you can spot where it went to cover and wait for it to bleed out. xx pilgrim

<< Dr. Bill estimates an "expert bowman can easily discharge six arrows per minute." Colonel Dodge’s description is equally compelling; “He will grasp five to ten arrows in his left hand, and discharge them so rapidly that the last will be on its flight before the first has touched the ground…”>> (see link) IMO Lars Anderson is not much to do with bowmanship BUT - this link is a good interesting read about arrows in warfare on the frontier and in the American civil war - real life recorded info. and first person observations: arrow design, use, advantages, speed, silence, wounds, effectiveness http://ehistory.freeservers.com/vol2/Arrow%20Wounds.htm (I think this is great stuff, but check from para. 7 if you don't want to read it all) * With a 45 lb no-sights recurve I can hold two or three arrows under the little finger of my bow hand, no problem (45 is no big deal, right?) some folk can hold a sheaf and still shoot. I've seen people hold a spare in their draw hand, shoot crouched and lay their arrows on the ground, use a back quiver, a belt quiver, carry them in a piece of plastic sanitary pipe on a cord sling ... For warfare when you intend to shoot off 30 maybe 60+ arrows - then OK you need a way to carry them. xx pilgrim [off topic - about survival hunting in DayZ]

West: Deer and boar turn up the west of a line drawn from Lopoatino to Vavilovo but not further west than about E-007. They appear in repeat locations. (hunting is livable, but it has become a more popular area) North: I've still not seen any game north of the line S-015 [except one sick rabbit in the tactical nuke crater at 017/005, about 100 years ago (maybe it was the last wild rabbit?) sounded like it was drinking beer, can't blame it] Gary Walnuts 062/015 is the most northerly game I ever heard of. I saw 4 cows together there at 062/018 this weekend. Filled my water bottle, went back down, cows had vanished. The North is good woodland and hunting-camping area, but to live north of the S-015 line you must farm or fish. Game is not linked with shooting stands. Big pity. The locals must have built them for partying. There are five stands around Nagornoe - players loot through that village quite often (in case the heat map takes that into account) but no game seen. In the North ( = there is no game) But if you find a stream-bed with rocks in it and follow it downstream you will come to open water. xx

The Tactical Nuke Crater One good thing, it looks to be many years old but still no one wants to talk about it ... the old military buildings for a mile to South and East are shattered ruins now, broken walls and overgrown rubble where trees push roots deep into the abandoned tarmac -

Time to get PIPSI (from the machine :OOOOOOO)
pilgrim* replied to thefriendlydutchman's topic in Suggestions
Nope - in fact it is another brand called Croak that pays to have Pipsi linked with Zombies in people's minds. Given the choice of drinking a can of Soda or catching Cholera - hmm.. you're right.. I just can't make my mind up which is better ! When you say "no part of it is reality" - did you ever see the Tour De France? It always interested me how those Top Level Athletes drink so many of those free Coca-Cola while they are riding those day-after-day international-famous grueling world-class long-distance hot open roads under the deadly French summer sun. Why don't they stick to water? Now, I'm an athlete myself so I know a can of coke can give you a 15 minute sugar kick, but for long distance I'd avoid it. What's your opinion on glucose intake? Particularly in an extreme exertion or survival situation? xx pilgrim = breaking open a Pipsi machine is a cool idea jorn818 = -
TENTS and PERSISTENCE, Keep-Out PUBLIC SERVERS and THE DEVS
pilgrim* replied to pilgrim*'s topic in Suggestions
Yes right, good point ColdAtrophy - On a public server, any admin who wants more players, if he lets them in to play - then on weekends or evenings he will never be short of players IMO. Think that this is not a penalty it its a better weighting system to avoid abuse: * * Stashed loot in tents and barrels is INCLUDED in the loot spawn calculation The quantity of loot spawning on a public server is proportionate to the number of players on the server There is an loot economy reason that so many public servers have max 1-5 players, and "whitelist", "keep-out", and kick the other players who join. In my honest view there are many of these "privatized" public servers. Why? Because they are very profitable in the loot economy. My framework of an idea is an experiment - The advantage is: BI can do this experiment alone. No one has to try to get the SPs to police to anything. So - players complaining to SPs will become obsolete. There won't be any need for it any longer. I'm saying that loot spawn modification can deal with this BIG problem which is totally wrecking the public server loot economy. And causing bad feeling in the game. * In this idea - if there are a lot of players on a server there is more key loot spawn, and less if there are less players - so it averages out. There is about the same loot per person whatever population server you play on - this is fair for all players. On a normal public server you can search for stashed loot - this is fair game-play On an public server that does not let in players, when the admin stores up most of the key loot, the supply begins to dry up, so the admin can't go on making his safe stash bigger and bigger - this is fair too. For private servers, no change. For 1pp public servers, also no change - to encourage more players to join 1pp. xx pilgrim The Central Loot Economy as it works right now, is explained clearly here: https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/223307-central-economy/#entry2243705 Thanx -

how to get rid of messages on the crosshair
pilgrim* replied to GordonFreemanTR (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
If you put the crosshair on another player do you get the "KOS" message ? :) -
I think that looks about right - I followed the instructions exactly without asking why, and it worked. hey - while you have ArmA 2 open try the training missions or flying a helicopter - it's kind of fun :)

DayZ: At the first non-lethal shot an animal should run to any close cover - to a treeline line or to bushes, and then stop there. This is your chance to "track" it and take another shot. It won't run again unless you spook it - then same applies as the first time. Animals in DayZ should bleed out, like humans. So you can follow it up after the first shot to finish it, take a second shot and follow again if you need to. Or you can sit and wait it out, until it bleeds out. [edit: a wounded animal should never despawn like other loot, until it dies] (Hey - for +50,000 years we have been hunting with bows and spears (and those are not good for headshots) - we can move faster and further over a period of time than any other creature, and we can keep moving for days longer, without tiring. 90% of hunting has always been following up a wounded animal. This is hunting as it has been for 50 centuries - survival hunting - My idea here is a VERY little SIMPLE imitation of that style of hunting for DayZ. Blowing a deer's brain out of its head with a high power rifle is a modern sport, it ain't survival. - If you want to just kill animals in DayZ use an automatic military rifle, save yourself having to aim (the steaks and the hide will be the same)...

unconscious for how long after dehydration?
pilgrim* replied to Leto (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
nope - you're doomed some info on a range of useful health & other stuff here: http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Health_WIP When dehydrated, you lose Blood and Health, if left unmanaged you'll die soon. merry christmas Leto, and don't worry too much about Mr. D, he comes for all of us.. I just now fell off the stars in a barn (sigh) xx -
It is a great pity there is no "stagger" effect for a non-lethal hit in DayZ As well as the shotgun load there is the special particular quality of a shotgun when compared to other weapons In Vietnam ground troops were constantly calling for shotguns - I read thy were very popular for patrol situations for short range surprise face-to-face. These guys had totally free access to modern military rifles as standard equipment, and as much ammo and frags as they could carry - so why want the shotgun? It's irritating in DayZ to give someone a solid shotgun body/chest hit at short range, and the guy grunts but does not flinch - gun still up, still aiming steady - and headshots you. As long as this is the case - the different loads are interesting (very good conversation) - but IMO will not have any effect in the game. xx

Now THAT is a very interesting observation.. hmm ( a thing about trends is; people pretty much DONT KNOW why they go for one thing and not another (seems people don't work like that) and what they think-or-say they like, is maybe NOT what attracted them, they 90% didn't even "notice" what really pulled them in.. ) maybe you have the touch, and less art = more real ? only thing I can say (IMO) is a formula works - like a comic book, like a tv series - you keep to the Same length Same structure, Same lead in lead out - and just plug in the content, cut it to damn fit (saves you hours and the framework makes YOUR style) work exactly to that one length and fill it in every week? include your credits as content (I could quote you hundreds of neat moves - but you know them better than me.. but (I can't resist just one, right out of context) - the intro to B Galactica where they use the sad Gaelic music for the nuclear holocaust, space fights and explosions, and the drumbreak fast-action music for the closeup human interaction cuts. They invert the musical expectation. That was a brilliant move... Check it; (it's worth one more time) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPBzHa2PcS8 59 secs total, and you are completely IN (do you even have a choice?). Someone earned their pay with that mix (ain't that just NICE!) But - you've got me hooked now i don't usually care to notice numbers when I'm youtubing for my own sake (I'm only looking at what interests ME) but with what you just said in that one line I KNOW I'm going to spend the next month watching and comparing for exactly that. You've totally got me with that one comment. Ohoh - I can feel it coming on.. do good.. xx -
Try logging on to a couple of public servers that have 30 or more players, see if you get the same

I mean 'Fresh Spawn Justice' - score is an interesting choice but it struck me you could use it to better effect. Don't go wasting time taking my comments serious - is IMO only - but seeing as you say "it was just a quick 15 edit on that video" I hope you don't mind me saying,< yep that's how it came across > lol - but no - it's all good I just noticed that you could fit it together better You know, yourself, you can spend ages (if ya want) getting a cut exactly right and a score that fits perfectly - and nobody but you will seem to notice AT all. (really they do notice, they just don't know it) I make soundbites spare time, and spend TIME - ya know - on a couple of seconds of audio. I've done sound splices for play-alone music compilations for local bars & local radio (I live between Val d'Isère, Paradiski, Méribel, Courchevel, so plenty music gets used) and for just fun I've built people new sets of windows event sounds - is a customization kick that some folk like. I thought I was a one-off crazy hobbyist, then I found that Brian Eno did the original event sound set for MSoft. So I ain't the only one. intros are old - folk are just waiting for the intro to end, right? rule is: focus everything to get the viewer into the narrative, You have to have a definitive trademark stamp so people know without doubt it's your video (like how long is the HBO white-noise screen?- but everybody knows what it is), how you figure to do that is what makes you the dude. xx -
I know all you guys really like DayZ a lot - and it is the festive season and all.. but one thing you just HAVE to understand ; ZOMBIES are NOT REAL PINGU is REAL But Zombies are NOT OK ? xx

using your vid timing - I'm speaking about the music as it is from 1:06 to 1:36 - starting only a second before the horn phrase comes in (you have a nice moment in the music there to do a quick fade in) using that section gives you an evocative 30 second theme OK start the video without music cut the first 8 seconds on your original timing, bring in your 30 second theme from 0;15 to 0;45 then fade it down to background bring up the titles at 0:40 during the static conversation this is an idea and I expect you to tell me to pee-off (your work is well done and clear, good video, good sound) who am I to make suggestions? - also, I'd have to run it a few times through Premiere (I use) to see if my idea really fitted together at all. You know how it is. still - you did ask.. IM0 that 30 sec music cut is good for a theme .. the previous musical section is really just a lead in to that point in the score, and too long for a short video.. it would work for a film about mountain climbing (or something) but it's only useful if you need it to back 20 seconds of credits at the start of a piece .. leave it out and you've got a more interesting and evocative sound that moves straight into the drama.. the music in the vid fits well at the end, as it stands (cut the music last half-second at 2:41 so the chord sequence fades to silence) - I LIKE that whole piece - so if you look well back in the action, you could always find a mix point to bring the music to that same end piece as a timed termination - would work with any of your vids using this score. That's it - But if you want something right up front - a trademark starter in the first second, use a soundbite, choose any sound you feel - a shout and a shot, or a zap (whatever) a half second of definitive trademark sound to take you straight in - then you guarantee you can get away with having your credits a little later at a good point in the action. 'K 'scuse me Beav - takes 5 mins to say this stuff (very easy) and hours to do it (very not easy); Beanz. xx pilgrim -
And they have feelings too!
