    Is DayZ a disappointment?

I laughed all the way through this thread, this is good stuff. What was the question again?

    Fear the Shotgun

hmm, true .. so why the intense emphasis on weapons and bullet systems in the first place? every bullet-firing weapon attempts to be a realistically model of a specific type and sub type of existing or once-existing weapon, this seems to be a design goal set a long time ago. But everything else can/ or may be/ or is/ realistic to somewhere between zero and 40% ? just noticing, not "objecting".; but I do notice. Now - this design feature in DayZ is nothing to do with this being a game and not "real life" [philosophy = : ) = a game world exists inside the Real World and is only Part of the real world - so it must to be Less Complex than the real world or it would not Fit, we agree] Some strong emphasis and attention to detail is is given to certain aspects of the game, much less is given to other aspects - this is game design. As DayZ players (and unlike players of some other types of games) we all want a game that is in some sense "realistic" - as the term is commonly used in games. If we did not want "realism" we could all play chess - that game is highly immersive but non-"realistic". So - back to my suggestion: Why not have impact (fire, melee) register on players to some extent to make firefights more interesting, to open new possible results and techniques, wider and alternative combat-play possibilities, and perhaps even make combat slightly more "realistic" .. but I'm happy enough to leave "realism" at a fairly low percentage as long as firefights in DayZ become just a little more .. immersive. I wouldn't expect the immediate effects of blows registering to be more "realistic" than the level of realism we find in dayz fishing for instance..ie - "realism" at about 0-3% ?? (difficult to judge) and less "realism" than THAT would be just fine and dandy. So I wondered why zero attempts have ever been made in the whole ArmA family since it's inception right up to DayZ SA, to "indicate" a hit by a reaction - however slight - on the part of the player. Seemed odd, So I mentioned it. xxP I like the devs too.
  3. I missed something: - how do you get the assholes and the non-assholes to agree ? - how do you get even the "assholes" to agree ? (you used the term, hemmo) - yo ever thought of running for President?

Player stats shouldn't show players killed

A good thing to put in the stats would be your Blood Type because I can never fragging remember it

    Fear the Shotgun

I guess it IS - but I spent a few years in online FPS with my kid who has half my reaction time (to me it was like he had auto-aim, ya know?) so he was faster but I was more cunning (still am) so it evened out. Now playing DayZ I hit a player first from where he doesn't expect, and he just shoots anyway, i don't have that REALISTIC moment to step back behind that wall, nada. you hit a dude he acts like Terminator (but faster) He doesn't care. To make the point - on youtube how many snipers have you seen killed with an axe, and they don't even know what's happening? Hey - in real life you draw a bead with a long range scope, and I'll hit you in the head with an axe, and you see if you can keep the scope steady OK? Just sayin' how it is - a shootout in DayZ is either 'dead' or 'not dead' - and afterwards if you are "not dead" there is some kind of damage to check out - broken leg, damaged gear, bleeding.. but that's all afterwards - like in a Dungeons & Dragons board game, ya know.. tote up what happened after the event. (this is a real-time military sim?) Everyone KNOWS if someone sprays 4 hits into your armored vest, or you get a shot in the back, or a sniper ruins your helmet with 1 head shot - you do NOT just shoot right back ... This is a BASIC FACT of armed warfare.. It should have been built-in to the core of all the "military sim" stuff right back since the Original ArmA - right along with trajectories and impact values.. Otherwise it makes all this "weapons realism" look just plain silly.. AT LEAST - for starters, just as a placeholder - a hit should throw your aim off, even for 0.2 of a second.

    Fear the Shotgun

It seems wrong to me that I can shoot a player - get in the first shot - with my shotgun (even a guy in a plate carrier) in the chest from close range and he just say's "ouch", I hit him - (blood) - BUT he goes on lifting his gun and moving just the same as he was already, perfectly OK, like the impact didn't strike on his body at all, he's doesn't even hesitate. (dude doesn't even blink - that would take some nerve IRL, heh ) This seems wrong .. he should at least stagger, or sway his aim a little; ya know.; Hesitate, because I just blasted him in the chest from 4 feet away.. but he don't . he just shoots me like nothing happened.
  7. pilgrim*

    Fear the Shotgun

yep, will be nice when we can also use a shotgun as a melee weapon, then when you can't reload you can do an Alamo
  8. pilgrim*

Oh mighty devs, please have mercy

    + shotgun = ribs
  9. pilgrim*

Oh mighty devs, please have mercy

Why are "Oh yes please" and "I'm not worthy" two different options ? Should be a third option - "I don't have knots in my underwear about this" xxP
  10. pilgrim*

    Humanity/Morality

not sure - but there is a rule that you're not allowed to wander around picking up your teeth unless the ref thinks they're a danger to other players
  11. pilgrim*

    Humanity/Morality

    or their actions
  12. pilgrim*

    Humanity/Morality

It's not complicated - if you kill them with the hockey stick you get a 3 or 5 minute penalty, depending if it was face to face or you sneaked up from behind (killing from behind is safer and gives you a better chance of surving so it's less moral)
  13. pilgrim*

    Humanity/Morality

? - shouldn't they be running around in circles really fast while they punch each other out?
  15. pilgrim*

no luck finding any kind of ammo

yes - don't look for a gun get away from the coast and large towns first chance you get drink a whole load of water then go eat apples for about 10 mins - you know where to find apples when you are full and healthy find a stone and make a stone knife stay out of sight run away from danger start looting around villages.. (cut the first shirt you find to make rags) In villages you'll food and clothing and water and backpacks as well as ammo and handguns and rifles and shotguns and melee weapons (a splitting axe is good) now you're set up to start being as mean and bad as you like no point running starving straight to NWA in your underwear and expect to be treated nice (where people and zombies are - don't go there) xxP

How do you greet people in dayz

get that treated - you know he urinates on them ?

How come helicopters are flying around and crashing with only crew on board in the post apocalypse emergency ? In the wreck there is only crew gear To be realistic at all there should be at least one of the following : - a crate of 500 bandages - 200 blood bags - eight zombies tied to stretchers (that would explain the crash, right?) - 3 or 5 crates each of ten new automatic weapons - 100 blankets - 20000 rounds in packs - a crate of 800 antibiotics - 50 quilted jackets - a high level UN/ONU observer with really good shoes, a very flash suit, and a silk tie with a gold tie pin xxp

If you can pick up an empty barrel how come you cant empty the water out of it? If you put gear in a barrel with (no) water in it, it gets soaked You can die of thirst wearing soaking gear you got out of an empty barrel that still has no water in it If a cooking pot is full of water you can empty it (that seems simple?) You can pour water from a cooking pot into a barrel but you cant pour it back You can fill the pot with with gear then fill it with water and it holds the same quantity of water as an empty cooking pot You can also fill the pot with gear but nothing even gets damp, and you can still pour water out of it If you put the dry gear from your pot full of water into an empty barrel it will get wet lf you put soaked gear from a barrel into a cooking pot full of water eventually the gear will dry out cooking pot = dry gear + never died of thirst barrel = wet gear + no water

I don't know about grenades when I try to find out about them I die (this may be some very rare kind of glitch) Here is my question: When you pull the pin on a grenade can you walk about holding it or do you stay in the throwing position ? If you are holding a grenade in your hand with the pin out when someone handcuffs or duct tapes you, do you drop the live grenade ? just wondering, ya know (also -off topic - if you put 5 or 6 grenades in a plate carrier you should be able to craft a suicide vest, right?)

How do you greet people in dayz

stay out of sight to make voice contact have the drop on them watch what they do when they understand you are talking to them if you are in sight to make voice contact (your first mistake) make sure you: have the drop on them 1 ) if they even start sprinting around - back off kill them now / leave the area (if you don't shake them you have to kill sprinters anyway, any safe method you can) 2 ) if you speak to them and there is even once a pause of 2+ seconds before they reply - they are talking to their friends on TS kill them now leave the area now this is not unfriendly this is a survival guide = = = sprinters and TS are the two things that make all contact totally ridiculous, dangerous, unrealistic, stupid, not worth while, haphazard and meaningless in DayZ (unless you play for laffs, ok) xxp

    O.60 Servers are up?

Yep, exactly - the whole idea of "rare" items that people talked and argued about for more than a year is ATM totally out the window. What is the "Loot Economy"? = The longer you play the more you pick up, the more you stash, the more they spawn, and the more you stash, the less time it takes you to gear up.. So we have had over 3+ months of totally geared up players (all the time, geared as much as they want to be) with nothing to do except collect more gear, PvP, and if they kill each other (even a lot) they log back to a stash and they're 100% geared up again in - realistically? - in 6 or 8 minutes after they die. So the only "loot-limit" is when the servers are reset for a new version. No other reason. Then everyone starts at zero again. But that's the only time it happens. I suggested (back a while) that the loot hidden inside stashes should be counted together with loot on the ground to calculate one total.. So if there are 200 of weapon X on the server, and 70 of them are already in tents, then only 130 can spawn - but I guess no one liked this idea. Folk imagine that all the total 'minimum of 20000 spawn items' will all be hidden in tents after a week or two and so nothing will spawn anymore. Then you'd have to go look for the hidden 1000 tents with a whole gazillion things stashed in them. So at the moment the limit on ALL loot spawned is set by NOTHING AT ALL. How much loot is really on the server depends how many tents you can put up on one server without it crashing. - and Nothing is Rare.; there's just no such thing. <sob> See the tear in my eye? . [Lots of players say this is a great system right now and they like it, so PLEASE don't anyone think I'm complaining - I AINT complaining OK? Dont flame me for just mentioning it ..sorry..] I know some other folk like hunting and fishing or playing on the beach - not everybody has 6 tents and 7 barrels, just very many players do. But, hey, a tent is a normal loot item until it is set up, then it is Special - so the Devs can tell you from the public hive direct, exactly how many tents there are set up on each server.

    O.60 Servers are up?

I am not arguing against persistence - at all. I have noticed - only from personal experience - that the (very different) people I meet and play with, often mention that they have 2 or 3 FALS, a number of AKs, etc etc.. As you say - some DayZ fans might think this is a problem - and as you hope, a different distribution of loot spawn might solve it. Also it seems a lot of players enjoy having plenty of loot stashed. So I'm not telling anyone how to play. The same players who (they say this themselves) have stockpiled a "lot" of loot, "several tents scattered around", a number of various military weapons, 5 or 6 barrels, "plenty of ammo" etc etc.. - those players are quite often NOT on DayZ servers when I log in to Steam now, they are playing other games.. A while ago they were almost always playing DayZ. It may really be true that players are tremendously excited about the next patch, and that this great excitement is what makes them feel so "bored" about the current patch, so that they don't want to play at the moment. For myself - I find it hard to imagine that those players who are "pissed off" with DayZ now, are actually only pissed off because they are so looking forward to the next patch that they just can't stand playing the game until it arrives. So I wondered if perhaps there was another reason? The last time i was on my normal server I was wandering around with a FAL that I found by chance, offering it to other players - they ALL said "no thank you they had enough already". This started me thinking the situation was mildly humorous. If I am wrong and there is NOT "too much" loot stashed around the severs at the moment - OK, then I'm wrong. It's probably true I'm a dumbass for saying there is too much loot stashed around - and it goes on being stashed and goes on spawning - and how much loot can you collect - seriously - before you stop picking it up? If this sounds stupid - then OK, it was a dumb idea. Forget mentioned it. I play out of a backpack, I don't have a tent, ( I had three in the Mod, wow ! ) - Myself, I don't WANT all that stuff. Why would I WANT 2 or 3 AKs ? When O.60 takes it ALL away, I think MANY players will come back to start playing again, to check it out, and many of those will start collecting again (because that is part of the game, right? - so that's cool, no problem). And that will go on for a couple of weeks - Then when the tents are full, we'll be able to tell if people continue playing and if they are still excited with the new version. I hope they are still really happy about 0.60 after two/three weeks or so.

Sorry EmuThreat, I read this far and then I was laughing so much that I stopped. I'll give this one a miss. O.60 Servers are up?

Haha - I got to laugh - reading this thread I sense the FEAR in the game; the difference between 0.59 and 0. 60 is FEAR... It used to be that Danger and DEATH made you feel FEAR. Wow! Getting killed! That was Bad! Do you remember that old game called 'DayZ' where if you died you had to start the whole thing over again right from zero with nothing? - does anyone remember that? This year, the big FEAR players have is they might get killed before their tents are stashed with loot - because that's a pisser and a pain in the neck, aint it (getting killed before you have your good stash built up, that kind of wastes your time) ? So in the new DayZ when you get "killed" you go back to your 5 AKs and 3 FALS, your handguns and police pistols, couple of Winchesters, and - hey - some grenades, food even (yeah, why not?) and your 14 mags and 2000 rounds of ammo - so what just happened when you DIED ? - nothing happened. OK! Right now in this 59 Patch everyone has had plenty of time to get all their tents and barrels filled up - That means nobody is interested if they die or not. We need all that STASH taken away, so we can start playing again, and start feeling maybe a little bit worried again. 0.60 will do that ! That new 0.60 FEAR should last a week or maybe two. Then when the stashes are well stocked up and everyone's safe again, players can settle back into "Did something happen? Nope.." - nothing happened.
  25. One thing to do - You should look up " guide " (just that one word ) in the forum search box at the top right of the page - you'll find a load of guides on everything from building fireplaces to how to stealth around zombies. Then also read the New Players section of the forum - many first time players ask questions and have problems and want help, or want to meet up - so there is a lot of help in that section, and useful info and explanations - also some new players have worked out original techniques for themselves. They share info and experiences. If you look around enough there you'll discover everything from how to find rare ammo, to good melee weapons, to cooking fish, to what graphics settings are the best for you.. Also - some experienced players have written detailed guides and advice - for instance on hunting, wilderness survival, what weapons are the best, and other subjects - the ones listed in this link may be a little old now (unless they are updated) but there is a ton of useful info and pointers : Also (for fun and interest, not for practical help) check out Hetstaine's famous Tourist Guide to places you wont expect to find in DayZ - but they exist - These are interesting unusual features scattered around the country, maybe worth visiting: OK - A lot of players say it is best to go straight into the game and find out for yourself, without knowing too much first - Some say look at youtube, others say DONT EVER do that f you are a first time player. So it's up to you. I think the best advice is to start playing, find out what happens (you die, obviously) - You die a lot, anyway, you probably die pretty fast about 5 -10 times before you start getting the hang of what NOT to do - even if you have advice from other players before you log in or in-game ( and you have to decide who to trust in there) This is part of the fun.. exploring and finding out what is in the game. Find out what problems come up - like food, and clothing and water (those come up pretty fast) - come back to the forums to find out more info and clues (like how to make a stone knife to open a can of food), and then see what you can work out for yourself - AND ask questions, many players are pleased to help you here. My only practical advice is this - maybe you know: with a knife (or a stone knife) you can cut up shirts and tshirts to make rags. Its a good idea to carry 4 or 6 rags right from the start (I used to cut up my tshirt as soon as I logged in) because with a rag or a bandage you can stop bleeding - this is really important, because you will bleed a lot - zombies and other players like to make you bleed, and if you cant bandage the wound you WILL bleed out and die. And with rags and a stick you can make a splint for a broken leg (zombies like to break legs too, sometimes). With a leg broken you cant walk you can only crawl).. so right there are a couple of things that are useful to know - There are about 200 other things you definitely need to know too, sooner or later .. As soon as you start playing you'll find out what those are. Enjoy xxp
