Maintenance every Wednesday until about 11:00 CEST = <Central European Standard Time> , that is the reason you don't see any servers (20 mins ago). Try in a couple of hours they will be back. Or play an Experimental server until the main servers come back online.. see what's happening there. Can be very interesting? xx

It would be do-able in DayZ to have one key to swing or club or with a gun butt (rifle) or to strike with a handgun (strike like a blunt instrument) if you were already holding it .. this would be fine for zombies, for keeping quiet, for running out of ammo - various stuff.. If the devs were interested I think they could include that without rewriting the game.. (yes devs?) It is not a new action and it makes good sense. ATM you can't defend yourself with an empty rifle even against someone with bare fists or a meat tenderizer, you just stand and take it or put your rifle carefully back on your shoulder before you even get mad at him ( ... & lets not mention bayonets !! ) They devs have already shown a demo of reacting to blows, on it's way - That will change the feel of melee a lot. Also - left handedness & right handedness - plus the above, to add interesting new steps to the DZ death dance

"Realistic" close combat in an online game requires built-in VERY thought-out sets of combos and actions to illustrate them, and complex anti-lag calculation, and is usually tried ONLY in a special circumstance game - I mean ie face off with swords, or sword against axe and shield, or spear, armor .. blocking, movement parry and striking moves & several combo moves, all animated in "realtime", so the other player can react... This is a set piece structure, although it "looks" realistic (if well done). BUT it is hard to imagine this working as just "one element" among many, in a game like DayZ. This sort of melee is for games 90% ABOUT Melee. Does anyone know of a realistic melee game online where the melee is not the Main Point of the game, and nearly all the rest of the game is subservient to that? Does such online game exist..?? Are we talking about stealth, karate strikes, groin or neck punches, disarming, kicks, knees, teeth, knife blocking (deliberately accepting arm or hand wounds to capture the opponents blade?) breaking ribs, tripping, kneecapping, wrestling, incapacitating, punch-strike, daze, blood-loss effects, multiple different strike zones on each body? ... This is very complex set-piece gameplay.. Is there really any game that incorporates something like this without it being the POINT of the game? Or, seriously.. in DayZ if you want to simply shoot an unarmed victim, = stay WELL AWAY from him and SHOOT. If you stand a foot away in a melee and try to shoot, he'll just twist the gun on your wrist (leaving you with your good hand blocked, if not ruined) while he's head-butting you. The odds of gun/no-gun winner would still be 50-50 if neither person had any other advantage. A gun may really not be useful in a melee .. hmm .. unless you can club with it?.

Yes ,it shows a determined fellow with a decent stick demonstrating (- masterly! - ) how to get the better of a demented crazed armed street-bum who has no idea how to aim or use his damn firearm effectively - just another gang bum who can't control his actions his mouth or his weapon .. It is not TheWalkingManZ's 'FAULT' he is not shot dead - he is just BETTER at close combat, he thinks faster, he has rapid judgement and skill, he closes the distance to take full advantage of his own weapon, and completely confuses and subdues the hooligan who thought he was chasing down an innocent unarmed civilian for a quick murder. If you don't want to get involved in the dance of death, don't blame DayZ, just don't go there - don't step into the circle ! - Let this be a lesson to you all, you scoundrels !

?? but when you find a Pokemon they get bigger before you fight them and in DOOM you can spin around really really really fast -
my main work for 20 years has been explaining programmers to human beings & vice versa Excuse me if I'm slack and free-form when I'm off duty: this is the way I email friends. Sometimes I even throw away the spelling, ya know? I won't mention again the overall game-play shaping and the disparate player-style unifying elements in the game BI must absolutely be working on right now. Let's get back on track : << I haven't touched the standalone since patch 0.55. ..//.. It is borderline boring and not fun for me. DayZ SA's vision is not something I ever liked.>> You don't know how long is it until BETA hits and it doesn't really matter to you. What you do wish to know is as much information as the devs can share about it.

it is all "civil" .. sorry if i use words you don't understand. A lot of people who "talk about mods" haven't the first idea how to write software. Not the tiniest idea. But that's just their life, ain't it? .. not mine. And plenty of software engineers and coders can't express themselves in words as well as they can write code. that's just life, right? I start with : << I got no problem with mods .. >> I end with : << I ain't disagreeing with anybody, 'far as I can tell.. I'm just a guy in the street / in the woods / passing through.. >> So what is difficult to understand about that ? * * * p.s. A modder changes the vanilla - BI changes the vanilla - but BI coders aren't called modders because they do it for a living.. <lol?>

Nice Gews photo of a range of machetes! for what it's worth, @HaseDesTodes - Different EU countries (and other European countries) have very different weapon laws, including their laws on blades: Max length for a publicly carried fixed blade knife in Germany is 12cm = 4.7" (less than 5") Controlled weapons: German law defines a cutting and thrusting weapon as any object intended to reduce or eliminate the ability of a person to attack another person or to defend themselves. This includes swords, sabers, daggers, stilettos, and bayonets. For example, as a sword or bayonet is a military weapon intended to injure or kill people, these are regarded as a weapon in criminal law. In contrast, a machete of any length is regarded as a tool to clear dense vegetation, on private land. - knuckle dusters (spiked or not) are illegal in every EU country to the best of my knowledge (I'd be amazed if there is an exception) Carrying a genuine broadsword in public is DEFINITELY - totally - an offense just about everywhere in the world. Certainly in Germany. < & as for gun law.. er.. forget it > * anyway: IMO putting a bayonet on a long stick would make a great martial arts weapon. (?) OR how about a simple traditional Quarterstaff? - Easy to make - A very common everyday English carry weapon at one time, with a strong & regularly practiced martial arts tradition of its own called "two-hand staff" - IMO very like Japanese "bō" Bōjutsu - (check Wikipedia again, for Quarterstaff) xxp

It's a leveling game with eye candy. IMO - The serious players have their table of skills and aptitudes open on their 2nd screen, interactive, and a calculator by the keyboard. & you need reaction time, but unless you have the points/skills/aptitudes/bonus calculator working that won't help a lot. - Not complaining.

One Tapped By A Zombie with full health and blood?
pilgrim* replied to Cmdr. HyperWASP's topic in General Discussion
ps I think their is a LOT of balancing and economy WORK and testing going on right now - this is why BI now run their own Official servers <and pay for that themselves>. This vital "EQUILIBRIUM" stuff cant be detailed in the updates and progress reports because it is COMPLICATED and does not produce any one-liners or daily changes. But I think it's a MAIN Key to what is going on at BI for the game AND the players right now. The progress updates must stick to reporting technical elements because those are tech, obvious, defined, pre-designed, timetabled. But the SHAPE & STYLE of the game - the FEELING for the range of different play-styles - is the BIG crunch in the long term. IMO. -
One Tapped By A Zombie with full health and blood?
pilgrim* replied to Cmdr. HyperWASP's topic in General Discussion
That's what the man said. I run DayZ today on an AMD Dual Core. I have a nice GPU. Everything is hunky-dory. I have been one-tapped by a zombie when "Healthy". That was a while ago. I'm more cautious now. One important designer-aspect of this game is that sometimes it is really a pisser. * I would like to complain and rant and moan and rant and er .. rant.. about the RAIN please.. Are we frozen in European Climate Change Autumn for ever? Is this what Romania is REALLY like? (you poor BI s@dz, no wonder you're always in the office) How about 14 hours of blinding daylight, shorts and beachwear, and heavy SUNBURN hits ? & Parasols? Suncream for survival? < sigh, this is a joke, OK> Shouldn't the zombies stand in the shade? Why don't they attract flies? * Anyone seen ANY barrels on Official? - JUST STOP hoarding them you EVIL nerds ! xxp -
OK - it is one of the melee weapons that can be worn it in the shoulder position - so I assumed it was longer. I gave up on them in DayZ as inefficient, I admit I was disappointed by their version. So it's not the military or "macheteros" guerilla kind of weapon, known from Cuba to Rwanda & Philippines & also by US & Brit military at various times. The old "standard issue" USA military machete, remaindered in mil. stores & 'claiming' to be USA surplus, is the least useful I've seen, 12" is puny and doesn't deserve the name "machete" In the Eng speaking Caribbean the "real" working man's / fighting & uprising / side-arm machetes have a good heft to them, they have a weighted blade 15-18 inches long. In the region they are often called "cutlasses" - They have been used in the past as cavalry weapons (in military actions), for instance, so they have that requirement of reach and weight and cutting power. What you need for rain forest, fighting, & all day work cutting sugar-cane.. I do LIKE a good machete, myself.. I've never seen IRL a "little" one. The blade length should be about from from elbow to knuckle, shouldn't it? The one's I have come across IRL would be an ideal anti-zombie weapon IMO. = eg check Wikipedia "Bolo knife" & "cutlass" (as well as "machete") - also a great multi-purpose survival tool. - thanx G.

I got no problem with mods, what folk do with their time, if they are killers messiahs, survivors, casual or serious hardcore, code gurus, or playing any game at all for tech flash kudos or 100% laffs.. really NOT problem. ... also I have no "but" to add on to the end of that statement .. that's it. I could start in to a whole analysis of where DayZ SA "the official" is going, and IMO why.. (.. blah blah.. talking about planning and objectives and also about players and player expectations..) .. er.. like for instance (just one instance), hey look at that STRANGE wide wolf-free corridor that goes from the SE of the map (Electro) ALL the way up diagonally to NWA .. did that turn up there by chance? I could bore you with 50 examples of what I THINK BI are trying to do and what their loot economy MUST be about.. And on Steam now I notice many players who have "only" 50 of 200 hours of DZ .. not 1000+ . so stuff is moving, players are moving AND changing, there is a complex meaning <=COMPLEX=> balancing taking place in the gameplay, <which is why BI took control of the "official" servers and payed out of their own pocket for that.>. economy, scarcity, spawn locations, ammo, animals, crafting..; as Klesh (just about) suggests, getting that Equilibrium and balancing the game for a whole RANGE OF PLAYERS might bring the early BUZZ that came with DayZ, - because there was a hell of a BUZZ going on if you were a survivor, a sniper, killer, or a PVP & organized warfare freak. It was good for everyone. Then the hackers totally "changed" that equilibrium as much as the mods.. (zero blame or comparison, the 'player-base' did what they wanted, some wanted to mod, some to map hack, some to survive, some to kill..) .. and then followed plenty of arguments and plans and disagreements about direction, next step, prevention etc.. and a lot of complaining. (maybe that's the forum style too ?) BUT That WAS an Exciting game THERE for a while - then began a new phase with MANY elements changing it, still cool but (for X reasons) 'messy' - from DayZ Mod in it's last year through the first couple of years of DayZ SA .. And now I come back here after one more year it's different again. There are some old timers around, but also new and DIFFERENT players, Different Attitude Folk. Most importantly the BI progress reports don't & CANT report on the overall SHAPE of the game. they must report on tech priorities. But EXACTLY the most important is the SHAPE and the BUZZ, we all know that. For sure, if there was another game anywhere today that gave me the KICK of the early DayZ -> DayZ SA - I'd be THERE NOW, Not Here, and I don't give a rat's f@rt if it's from a one-person 15 year-old modder or of Sony Entertainment spent 1.5 billion wages on it .. THAT don't make .... the difference ... I ain't disagreeing with anybody, 'far as I can tell.. I'm just a guy in the street / in the woods / passing through.. xx pilgrim

I think the machete hit is under-rated in the game - IRL it is a Mean Bad Weapon
-
A cleaver does the exact same damage same speed & distance as a machete but only takes two slots instead of 3. An ice-axe is better, more damage, longer reach, if you find one (3 slots).. You can also mine stones with an ice axe and dig farming plots. IMO - Also depends if you like to hack or slice?

Do you remember what year persistence was introduced in DayZ SA ? I was WONDERING what made DayZ a "special and unique" game at one time - ( that's why I put << NO RSVP please >> to end the comment) . But if it's "another game like any other" with nothing to mark it out, - then that's fine and dandy too. I know BI made and often stated their decision that DayZ SA would NOT incorporate DayZ Mod style or elements into the SA version. So maybe one good mod for DayZ SA would be a DayZ Mod Mod. Either way, modders and players are two different beasts, they hardly recognize or understand each other. They don't have the same objectives. Do they? xxp whatever .. https://youtu.be/5W46zq5-qnE
