Good question, brave man, heroic emuthreat! Obviously the BOX has to have a hole cut in it that is wide and high enough so that you can JUST see the edges of your active play screen through it when you are sitting in your normal playing position. You will be lucky if that is 30° wide and much less high. Measure it for yourself. Even playing with an ultra wide screen or multi screen this "box opening" will give you less than 80° forward vision from side to side. NOT the 170° vision of normal real life human eyesight. Then go out in the real world wearing you "REALISM & IMMERSION" box. Or go into combat. Or at least be careful crossing roads.. OK..? Note - REAL human vision is 170° as long as you are looking straight ahead.. so for ultra REALISM never MOVE YOUR EYEBALLS left or right. This includes if you are wearing VR goggles - NO eyeball movement, OK? - that's cheating and it won't work anyway. Because if you do that UNNATURAL EYEBALL-MOVEMENT THING (in "reality" without a box) then you can get 190° of human vision without turning your head !!! That is obviously TOTALLY unrealistic and does not reproduce a TRUE game screen experience in ANY way. A true game screen (ie REALISM & IMMERSION) is flat and is NOT 3D, it gives you the same "sense of distance" as keeping one eye shut, because ALL those dots on your screen are actually the same distance from your eyeball, at the same focal length (a couple of feet or so?) and human real-life bifocal range-finding - incredibly accurate - and took hundreds of thousands of years to develop ( complain to BI ) - does NOT work on your screen. So for added realism & immersion in your cardboard box, out on the street, keep one eye SHUT. I assume that the DESIGNER of humans (probably Cthulu) totally forgot about "immersion" and "realism" when human physical skills and abilities were being structured into homo sapiens. LUCKILY wearing a cardboard box as described can put YOU back in a much more realistic & immersive experience than any actual "real-life" combat. I don't understand why warriors have not worn eyesight reduction devices for centuries to give them the great advantage of REALISM & IMMERSION. Think how many battles could have been won by soldiers wearing SERIOUSLY & REALISTICALLY vision-reducing boxes to give then a 30° forward view horizontally and 15° vertically - and using their neck muscles instead of glancing from side to side with their eyeballs. <good grief> !! Whatever IDIOT designed human beings certainly didn't take REALISM & IMMERSION into account at all. So if you are offered the chance to be a Homo Sapiens, even at a reduced price, then REFUSE it, it is not realistic. And of course, I am a follower of Nyarlathotep and no one can argue with that xxP -

Sorry Biohaze but this (above) is all NOT argument or discussion, it is just DOGMA You must show us the stone tablets handed down from the mountain with all this DOGMA written on them before we will say THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD AND IT IS BIOHAZE'S GOD right along with you. Sorry I only got involved, but I did.... <sigh> SOME PEOPLE for YEARS have sworn that 3P is like having your eyeballs floating above/behind your head and is not realistic, and the SAME people swear that if you put a cardboard box on your head in real life and cut a 6 square in the front of that, then you can go into action wearing that box and it imitates your screen view so it is more REALISTIC and therefore more IMMERSIVE than having full real human eyesight. They really think that looking out through a small slit to give yourself narrow NON-HUMAN limited vision is "realistic" - which is exactly as laughable as having your eyeballs floating over your head. But this is THE problem with fanatics - they CANT see how their DOGMA leads them blindly into utter rubbish.. Their religion tells them it MUST be TRUE so it IS TRUE and they cut their brains out and come knocking at you door telling you all kinds of Crap or wearing explosive belts, etc.. Their message is DIRECT FROM THE ONE GOD - so NOT open to DISCUSSION of COURSE, and you're a HERETIC even before you open your mouth. This is not "discussion" . So an argument would be nice BUT we have had it 100 times before and it never gets anywhere because as we all know The only, SINGLE, eternal & ONE TRUE GOD is YOG-SOTHOTH the All-in-One and One-in-All of limitless being and self, not merely a thing of one Space-Time continuum, but allied to the ultimate animating essence of existence's whole unbounded sweep. And - NOBODY can discuss THAT because I got it from the NECRONOMICON And claiming the NECRONOMICON is "not" the ultimate ABSOLUTE truth is like going around with a cardboard box on your head. xxP -

Can you get to the "field of vision" argument please? - that's where this thread always starts getting interesting (traditionally). A human being in the real world has about 170° field of vision in front of them without moving their head . How do you imitate that on your screen? I used to love this argument, it has gone on for years, please do it again. xxp -
How long have you been working for this kind of company, on this kind of game ? your first comment: << If you have it, and it is buggy but stable, push it out anyways >> hmmm.. so that's your philosophy ? In YOUR games company (or sub-company, sub-contractor, whatever), how does your team KNOW that your work is "stable" but "buggy" ? - and WHY do you "shove it out to the players anyway" (quick turnover, maximize profits, sell Game One today, have Game II ready to go, sell add-on content, sell upgrades?). Why not have an "experimental" and a "feedback" for players who really take an interest in the game itself? We have ballistic experts, and survivalists, and skilled modders, and fun players, and FPS connoisseurs, and technical experts and programmers, people who work in the industry - RIGHT HERE - and BI gets their input. That's a VERY GOOD way to go, for a "small" company that has NOT been absorbed by the mega-giants - The giants aim for the Lowest Common denominator, because "average player" = biggest worldwide market, and they aim for FAST turnover. Sell NOW, and have the NEXT ready to go. And they deliberately buy up and close down the competition. They don't LIKE alternatives. (only a VERY FEW of those 'small' companies left these days). BI work on their products for years and years, and years and years ..and every change, and every bug ironed, and every trial, and every suggestion included, and every alteration = NO CHARGE. What's the philosophy behind that and why do they bother? Say ... you don't work for Sony or Apple do you? - where 0.63 would be 1.0.6.3 Perhaps 6.3 should be DLC ?? BI can CALL DayZ <COMPLETE> any time they want, and then SELL upgrades. Hell, they can go for micro-transactions, even But..

look up the last poll and thread on this subject and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and the one before that? And THEN look up the discussions about CHANGING 3PP to avoid wall peeking etc etc etc etc ( .. ) AND the dev experiments with 3PP and the reactions THEN look up the discussions about REALISM etc etc etc etc ( .. ) And which servers permit which and WHY THEN know the whole subject will be DROPPED again and go on doing whatever I do xxp -

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. I have played Day Z. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. xxp -

<< He was a moving-target-survivor subscriber, a true child of the war, because except for the rare times when you were pinned or stranded the system was geared to keep you mobile, if that was what you thought you wanted. As a technique for staying alive it seemed to make as much sense as anything, given naturally that you were there to begin with and wanted to see it close; it started out sound and straight but it formed a cone as it progressed, because the more you moved the more you saw, the more you saw the more besides death and mutilation you risked, and the more you risked of that the more you would have to let go of one day as a “survivor.” >> - just an idea, a quote, the way I think, for folk who talk about endgame * * * See, folks - the original Mod was made by a soldier who was interested in getting the survival experience and THAT sense of danger and STRESS into a game.. so the players would FEEL the difficulty of staying alive and have to look out for it ALL the TIME. Adrenaline and difficulty and pay hard for mistakes and FEELING IT.- He wanted THAT reality in a game, BUT all he could find were FPS games. So he made a game where the FPS aspect was DELIBERATELY broken up and HIGHLY screwed about by SURVIVAL. You can be totally kitted up and dropped in the wild and you'll STILL DIE in 3 days, or 1 hour, for a stupid reason, sucker, you'll break a leg, you'll die of dehydration, you'll catch an infection, a psycho will hit you with a hockey stick, you'll step off a ladder = AND THIS MEANS that when you find your nice safe place and your buddies and your car you are ALREADY at the Endgame.. To get there you have to Work, and Sweat, and Worry, and Forage and stay Dry, be Cunning, Learn, stay Healthy, you have to make stuff to Live, you have to Plan, you have to even be able to find your way around from the damn Sun.. So if you want to spawn where your buddies are, you MISSED the damn POINT of the Game. It's already FAR to SAFE and EASY for the FPS fans who want their kit and buddies NOW, so they can stroll around and pretend they're on patrol for the day and imagine they'll be back in civilization watching cable TV and laughing at porn tonight. No, dude. - Some players want FPS because FPS is a game they understand and it's Easy = kit-up+shoot+run-about = EASY. This game was MADE to be =NOT EASY= .. It was designed to be a pain in the neck from the START, Day Zero, and difficult and UNFAIR, and ready to kill you quick for LITTLE reasons, starve you, rip your guts out, break your bones, let you crawl, freeze, bleed out, dehydrate, stagger with you eyesight fading out, disease in your body, and then DIE there and ROT until the flies came for ya. And now to please YOU it's been made MORE & MORE REAL SMOOTH and SAFE.. In the REAL Day Z the zombies could HEAR you when you whined and groaned. They could hear you talk, they came. Now its all SAFE SAFE you can collect your tents full of military gear and hang with your buddies and complain and whine and groan about how NOT exciting and unusual you feel. BI have flattened OUT this game SO MUCH for your benefit, it's like a kiddy playpen. I hid out behind a trash bin with a broken leg and I crawled for 3 days,- (three nights of play sessions).. following undergrowth and stone walls, out of the way of zombies and shooters, looking for morphine & food, blood in a tower block dripping from the floor above, heard them up there, dragging myself back under cover, lying behind the supermarket while the zombies walked through, watched their legs shuffle past, heard them blubber, not boiling my water, looking for a can that would get me over the next fields to the next empty smashed hospital..= so why did I BOTHER with those 10 or 12 or 15 hours of gameplay? Because THAT was the GAMEPLAY, dude. I found the morphine on a corpse. You TS day-trip FPS kit-buddies are missing out on SO MUCH. < you had to have been there, i guess> - too bad. Have an easy game, y'all. xxP

Say! - you know how easy it is to brew a sweet mash (melons, apples)? .. and to build a still ? We can call the brew <<Legless>> and call the spirit "KoS" [Guaranteed over 4 hours old. -Add a Rag for traditional anti-vehicle & room clearing molotov. -Wolves hate it. -Start brush-fires and campfires easily. -Can also be drunk in moderation. -Store away from tents.]
-
well - the zombies are a HELL of a lot more predictable than the players .. they KOS every time . Isn't this WHY people spend time with online games? - So they don't have to face nothing but endless NPCs ? - no AI that exists on the planet that can come NEAR the thought processes and actions of ANY human being chosen at RANDOM and dropped into a game. - If you think there is too much KoS then perhaps BI (and yourself) should get analytically philosophical, and commission (and look at all the serious research already out there) on the DEMOGRAPHICS of game players, their backgrounds, their expectations, their idea of what is a GAME, what is a PLAYER, and what is an APOCALYPSE (and what they watch on TV) and how much of the market is owned by large companies (do they want low production costs and mass worldwide sales) and HOW games are sold & advertised, because those big companies are INFLUENCING gameplay and game lifetime) - built-in-obsolescence, how SIMPLE or complex are the objectives of the game that attract the most players, (half an hour, days?) and brain scan them while they're playing, find out if they work long-term or short term plans, where are players on the IQ and age scales, what's the typical age, male or female, how long does their character usually live, at what level of complexity does the "average" player give up understanding aspects, or trying to widen or specialize his game-play, are easier options really more/less popular or is this a fashion choice ("do like your friends"), do they CARE about a given character they are playing? In what WAY do they care? How many solo players and what do they do, what percentage teamspeak buddies, how many people meet IN the game ..& etc.. Once you have an analytical grip on this (ie on the Demographics of contemporary life) - then you'll be able to decide WHY some gameplay is less interesting to YOU than to others, and what to DO about it.. IF you come across it, or go looking for it... * take any online game and how long do you expect to play it for - a month?, 2 years, 5 - 10, 30 years, 50 or 70 years? (why is that? some people play chess ALL their lives. Is that shorter lifespan ONLY built-in to online games? How?) * But - (to go back to an earlier point NO ONE picked up on) - IT IS REALLY NOTICEABLE that Zombies TOTALLY KOS ALL THE TIME - And that NO ONE EVER complains about that.. (they ought to be banned?) let's ask Yoda ? - would players maybe complain if there were NPC snipers at the airports or hidden along the coast road,? - or if there were wolves in the forest (oh.. yeah .. there ARE wolves in the forest) I'm told KoS is "boring" and gets to be always the same, (NPC zombie KoS is always the same, that's true). How come No One is asking for Nice NPCs who NEVER KoS? hmmmm? - who run up and say "hi dude! do you want some food or ammo? I can show you a good car, Say, can I help you plant melons,? " - if they did would you shoot them? .. (lol) xxp As a rule human beings are UNPREDICTABLE that is the ONLY reason any of us play on line.. right?
-
Zombies also KoS Human players are always FAR more interesting and UNPREDICTABLE than NPCs

[one day I'm going to ask him about putting a Skinner peep on a Sako 308 hunter, and the best silhouette for the front blade] .. hmm?

seems to me 90% of people, like me, are what you might call real-life unimaginative simpletons (if they play video games or not) and their MAIN aim right now is to look out for THEMSELVES, not anyone they don' know, even inside a framework of law and order (because someone else does that "law and order" for you, right?) And if you check Youtube you see again and again the MAIN ADVICE for a collapse of society is what weapons you need and how to make sure you kill the other bastads before they get your stuff - because THEY are all unimaginative simpletons, and YOU are the smart geared up one who shoots first. LOT of web info telling you THAT is how you win. (.. scuse me, i'm pointing this out because i'm an "Imaginative" simpleton). - show me the Youtube vids that explain to real people how to make friends and form communities .. are there many?
-
yes - but as soon as modding turns up then the whole chaotic DayZ experience totally fragments into private severs each running their own "safe" version of the apocalypse, where only "what they want", happens. Then it's not the breakdown of society anymore, it's just clubland.
-
every apocalypse survival film I've ever seen has base building communities of KoSers in it.. and that goes pretty much for human history too. just saying
-
do what you feel * say - why are folk looking for an endgame? Is that where the game ends? Is there an endgame thing in Minecaft ? (is it capture the flag, or last man standing?) or do you .. get an Achievement Medal ? - just wondering -
