    Lighting

this came up with the "cellar" discussion.. a couple or more of years back. The reasons given (at the time) that "cellars" or underground areas would not work were : - It created a big problem with the system of terrain generation - cellars under houses would create glitch spaces that players would easily get trapped in - the ambient lighting in DayZ is really UNIFORMLY ambient.. this is why houses cast no shadows. Any "shadow" has to be specially written in - i.e. your own avatar's shadow. * There was work done on the use of electrical torches in houses, because at first the light source shone out "through" sections of the house and could be seen at a distance (so few players used torches, plenty night players turned up their gamma instead) I understood this problem was solved. There is now - once again - work (experiments) - on defeating the gamma exploit Trees, avatars, etc cast shadows according to sun direction. Many objects do not. I do not know why the constituent lower room parts of a house cannot be similarly "written in" to cast a <darker> shadow (ie floor / walls/ ceiling /) so that there would be darkness inside the room - or at least "standard" shadow - whatever direction the sunlight could be coming from - in the case of a cellar - which on flat low ground would be naturally located beneath sunlight level at all times of day. * For light problems at night - to play honestly - try setting your gamma so that DayZ appears natural (not bright) by daylight. Lots of games standardly expect you to increase gamma just to play the game either in daylight or in any other game conditions. Players then tend to just leave their settings like that whether they are playing or not. and get used to having a "bright" screen all day. (the natural/artificial light in your room makes a difference too, natch) - DayZ has a gamma adjustment in Settings.. and your GPU has a gamma setting - and also your screen itself too (probably). Set all that stuff to 50% or "normal" and see what DayZ looks like in game daylight.. then see what it looks like at night. nights of no moon should be dark (easy to fall off rocks). Full moon should be light enough to see your way outside, and to see half (a bit) "ok" inside houses, open doors, notice objects. (not fall off rocks) ... more or less. that's my theory .. xxp

Yes. The content, capabilities, and support for DayZ SA 1.0 on PC are already decided. Obviously, this is the only way a private enterprise can operate and hope to make a profit - clearly defined planning. Commercial success of Arma 3 and DayZ allowed the company to grow (rapidly) to the current size of ~350 people, becoming "one of the largest independent game development companies in the world". Currently the company is working on finishing its early access titles DayZ, Ylands and Vigor as well as the development of their proprietary game engine Enfusion. [March 2018] * 350 staff: We wander into work and say << Hey, what shall we do today? - do you think there's a business plan lying around somewhere that might give us a clue, or shall we just - ya know - do what we feel? >> << By the way - does anyone know if we have a boss ? >> * * * ..//.. – in between learning how to collaborate across projects using very different tech, or simply working out how to best get along with each other when we're hundreds of miles apart – we've experienced our fair share of growing pains - ... ..//..Our flagship titles (Arma, DayZ, Ylands) all use different technology. So, when we say 'slowly but surely', we really mean it: basic architecture that will shape the way we develop for years to come. ..//..- in the meantime, we intend to keep our focus on delivering existing projects – and keep releasing games. With that in mind, some of the new projects lined up in 2018 may not use Enfusion. ..//..other projects may differ a bit from what we've tried before, as we continue to experiment, learn, and even take some creative risks. [Jay Crowe, Creative Director, Bohemia, March 28 2018] * <<Thanks to the progress we've made with our new Enfusion Engine, all Xbox players can enjoy the full set of features and content the PC 0.63 update offers.>> [BI blog August 31 2018] - hope this clarifies everything. Anyone played Argo yet?

    Please add something to xbox

Right JG - but also remember that when DayZ came out on PC it was already a VERY UNUSUAL game for PC players.. it did NOT fit into the standard expectations. There was a lot of confusion and wailing but some people really got onto the wavelength of this STRANGE new game .. where you were never safe, where you couldn't "savegame", where suddenly the screen went black and a little message said <You Are Dead>.. You started from scratch, you tried to survive without rules, you died - sometimes without even knowing why - you lost everything. You started from scratch again and you were paranoid all the time. People started to realize how BRILLIANT this game was ... it was just DEADLY. then a wave of PC imitations started - they were generally easier on the player, to tone things down a bit.

    Weapon name inconsistencies

Yes, licensing I agree, seems likely as UMP45 is made by Heckler & Koch, Germany. But it is interesting to know that different versions of the <same language text> are downloaded to different country IPs. Wouldn't it be easier to call each weapon by the same name in all languages? e.g. H&K have a subsidiary in Britain, so what is 'UMP45' called there ?

I was being deliberately <disingenuous> to try to draw a comment on the FUTURE of DayZ SA for PC. I wondered who might commit themselves. You didn't answer my question . Please listen carefully : If the server files are now FREE, and they are brought up to date with the next "version" (the version folk have "waited 6 years" for) - Then why should I NOT mount my own server & shard WITHOUT modifying the DayZ SA (PC) game content ? - I can then run DayZ SA completely independently of BI. - And of Steam - <oh yes>. (only the PC version, of course) We could understand this to mean that BI are now at the point of giving away DayZ SA on PC. This would be an end of life-cycle action, - would it not ? I won't reply to further comments.

Now that the server files have been released, and DayZ PC mods can be created : Do you expect that BI will release the further (final) iteration of DayZ SA for PC and then stop work on it ? So that after the "final iteration" no technical staff will be employed on DayZ SA for PC, and BI will have no further interest in it's development ? Do you expect that the BI public hive will remain dedicated to DayZ SA on PC for long after this termination ? - thank you in advance, for your thoughts on this. xxP

Don't know why everyone's knocking OrLoK - he's a MODERATOR for jeez sake, he MODERATES.. In the last few years there are moderators (no names - but I remember one or two) who would have binned the thread already; no hesitation, no talk-back, a LOT tougher and less tolerant than OrLoK. There were times when some subjects couldn't even be mentioned if Moderator xxx was around. Folk got banned for being to pointed or too direct. Not often - but it happened... and here's OrLoK who just stays calm and MODERATES.. Do you imagine he's making a living doing this? He aint no Hitman, he's not the Official Torturer or the Anointed Party Mouthpiece. Get off his case a little - you've never even ever see the horse get mad.

Hope, you GOT the point about the Business Model ... ,sure seems like you didn't. I worked for a privately owned Games Company (well known in it's day) and watched it being ground down by the business plans of large corporations (they bought it's talent, they invested in loss-leaders the PLC could not afford, throw-away games, a swamp of advertising, they "stole" ideas, all legal textbook, recognized tactics). . I could list all the Games companies that did NOT make it.. famous every one of them, now gone and .. just gone. full stop. Bohemia is fighting for it's life right now - it's not just "another day at the office" . - f you don't have any ideal of what's happening, look at the games BI is working on, look at the modding release, look at Xbox and Playstation, look at the overhaul of their core software. Ask "why all these things at once" ? Hope you can READ what is written in front of you on their own sites ... (it's writ between every line, dude - why cut your own throat when you have a fight on?). I have BEEN in the board meetings when a private company decides what direction to take, how to DEAL with the threat and FIGHT BACK, because (you may laugh) it's Stalin and Hitler aiming to out-think each other over <What to do about Stalingrad>. Private company means limited money, your money, and running costs are high. My last boss - after a LONG fight - closed down his studio, took his (good) pension, and kept his house. OK, Bohemia have SET their policy and made their move. We know plenty foot soldiers are going to die, for sure. Anyone who works/worked in the games industry can SEE what that move is (and I don't mean home modders or hot gaming fans, I mean <<Business Model / Direction /Finance / Target / Strategy>>. = Either their strategy will work, or not. if not, then sure, fly around No Man's Sky - I had fun with it for 3 whole weeks - enjoy! - by next year you may not have a DayZ SA on your PC (or maybe not anywhere) to come back to. xxP

    FLIES

I would dearly like FLIES back in the game, around dead bodies. I think I am NOT the only one who wants FLIES - like they were in the old game. They added Atmosphere, for sure. And this is not a technically complex suggestion. We have cannibalism in game, bags on heads, handcuffs (ie torture) etc.. so FLIES aren't going to offend anyone. Put FLIES back in DayZ. * So - if at all possible - Let dead bodies lie around a WHILE longer before despawning. The game can despawn any gear that is ruined (that's usually quiet a lot these days), to reduce the load on the server (or despawn just backpack and weapon at the current rate) .. but leave the body for a WHILE (as long as you can?) .. Bodies lying around in the game was also extremely Atmospheric.. I remember running up the coast road, then hearing flies buzzing off in the undergrowth, going to investigate... that was WORTHWILE gameplay.. I think the Xboxers would love it and most PC players would vote YES on that. <kichilron, please add FLIES to your list of suggestions.. thanx> xxP - folks - Join the "Bring Flies Back to DayZ Campaign" - You Know it Makes Sense.

You never seen a car in DayZ ? ... wow ! I mean, you never seen a car that you could DRIVE... double wow. don't worry dude, I ain't never seen a bicycle since the original Mod. ('but that's because they were never in the SA.. right).. you ever seen one ? Lets change the subject ... ok .. .. Hey, did you ever see a TENT ?

    It's Been 6 Years

I may be old and slow and daft (I used to be young and quick and stupid) - but there is STILL ONE THING I do not understand. My god I've tried to understand, but I just don't get it.. and I'll tell you what it is, so then perhaps someone can HELP me UNDERSTAND the answer... thanx (in advance) The question is this : WHY does anyone want this game FINISHED? "finished" means "the end". But BI go on adding to their games, and tinkering with them, and sometimes making big changes, and sometimes trying stuff out .. just the way a Modder would get bored with his mod after a few months and add better stuff and take away other stuff, and make something new, and change the scenery and the mechanics, make something part more difficult; or easier.. that's is the BI style.. they never say <<When the Game is Finished we will Turn Our Backs on it,>> << and then the players can take it or leave it because NOTHING will EVER change Again. Got it?>> They DON'T do that - look at their track record. They have their own style and their own attitude - and Personally I LIKE IT THAT WAY. If we ever get to the END of DayZ - when they put out the <<Definitive Boxed Set>> "Collectors Edition Gold" - and say "END OF STORY - no more changes EVER. Goodbye fans". that will be a Bloody Sad Day. People will play for a few months or a year after, and nothing will change and they will get bored and move on. That's the standard rule with Games Designers. Make one GTA Game..give it a 3 year lifetime with DLCs and Add-On Packs. Then announce GTA 2.. etc.. then announce GTA 3.. etc.. then announce GTA 4 ... ya know. THAT brings the $-Kublars-$ rolling in.. your company has sold 4 games PLUS DLCs and Addins in the time BI is still working on the one same game, because that's WHAT BI do.. And as long as they can stay afloat with that marketing model that's GREAT with me. Do you think there are still designers and programmers working on GTA 1 or GTA 2 right NOW? .... < I call Total Bullcr@p on that> Of course not. GTA 2 is mummified like it's inside a million year old pyramid - it WONT change ever. Nobody is working on ANYTHING EXCEPT the Next GTA... you know it, I know it, the Banks know it.. everyone SEES where the Money Tree is... * So there's my question : - WHY do you want DayZ to END. When it never changes anymore, and no one at BI is interested in it, then they can ALL work on a NEW game, and leave DayZ to rot away, you can uninstall it, dump it., forget it. That's the NORMAL way to treat games.. RIGHT ?? Why do you WANT that. I don't get it. So (being old and slow and ga-ga) I wonder WHY you are so KEEN to reach the ABSOLUTE END of DayZ .. Are you a fan of STASIS FOREVER. A kind of "fire and forget" DayZ.. "ok it works.. now move on to the next game" ? So you can stop playing? So BI can stop ALWAYS working FREE of CHARGE on new variations and player ideas, and neat little changes, new kit, and tryouts and additions, (really as if they ENJOY doing it) and instead the whole staff can just Name this version DayZ Official Full Version. and DROP IT completely (they've already been PAID for. it, for jeez sake, so why not?) It just takes some PR from bohemia - the usual style of announcement we have heard 10000 times, the way most games companies do it: - << Great News from BI !!! We've decided to bring out DayZ II and put in ALL the neat stuff our player feedback from DayZ told us to add - Expect a GREAT NEW DayZ GAME to explode on YOUR monitor. Amazing Graphics new GEAR, new ACTION ... Everything you love plus MORE - Coming soon - All New.. WOW !! You never lived until you died playing DAYZ II - Patient Zero >> and THEN go 100% for DayZ III - The Return of Doomsday DayZ IV - A new Beginning DayZ V - The Zombies Strike Back Hey a FRANCHISE !! ... just tell the players this one is Finished, now you BUY the Next One. so why "move this game to finish"? why not go on changing it and making it interesting and go on playing it.. It's FREE FOR LIFE <giid grief!> ... you would want a LITTLE bit of change every couple of years, wouldn't you? [Sneakydude; I thought you were keen on Modding - and isn't that what DayZ have been DOING to their own game for years? And aint that what they are going to GO ON doing? xxP

    Making developer's take action

No problem mate. But if you put paragraph breaks in your texts - probably more people will read what you say.. When I write long texts on this blog , I think usually a lot of people don't read them. When they look at all the text quickly, they really only notice a few words in the middle. Then they give up. So they never find out what I want to say. Put in more line-spaces and more people will hear your ideas. - this is just my opinion. If it is hard to read, people won't bother reading it. So make it easy for them. xxP

    Please add something to xbox

Xbox folk you will get what you want soon - remember (in case you didn't know) - us PC players are running a reduced version too - for optimization and bug-fixing and testing - MAINLY or TOTALLY for the benefit of Xbox .. I do seriously believe. It is IMPORTANT for BI that Xbox RUNS.. so they will NOT be hanging back.. AT ALL.. PC and Xbox will be side by side very shortly. that is about the BEST info BI can give you.. because - seriously - you do NOT WANT to hear a two hour explanation of net code, and the technical DETAILS of how this programmer has to ensure the controller and the server totally agree with each other. (well, some folk DO want to hear that, but they're just STRANGE.. right?) so on Xbox you have 24h daylight... that's unfortunate (but wont last) firstly because watching a DayZ sunrise/sunset from a high place overlooking the sea can be a graphically completely unforgettable experience. Totally neat. You'll have that soon. When the base of the game is rock solid BI will pour in the rest and you'll be up to your necks in it. This is how they work. and when Xbox and DayZ really RUN, both up to the same game complexity (neither of us Xbox or PC are there right now), - even then the game will go on changing. always has, always will.. You paid once and now it's free for life - play for 25+ years if you want. From here on it's free and it gets better.. Xbox folk will still be arguing about minor or major changes in 5 years.. Betcha. Meanwhile, us poor PC sods are on our reduced-game PCs, and - in case you didn't know - it RAINS in TORRENTS almost continuously (except when it's "just raining normally"). PC is like a Tropical Rain Forest in the WET season except COLD. So we spend our time sitting damp or soaked under dripping trees in the woods, getting soaked making fires, peering out through the mist, or hide in huts and listen to the sound effect of "heavy rain" on the roof. This is what I mostly did ALL weekend. On PC. "Bit of raw chicken anyone?" - The big advantage of PC Experimental right now is you can drink mud without dying of Cholera. ENJOY

    Making developer's take action

DayZ on Consoles to paraphrase some PARTS of Baty Alquawen's announcement HERE on this BLOG about Xbox work in progress : << Is PC your primary platform? Yes, it absolutely is our primary platform. Every piece of new content, every feature, every new bit of technology always gets into the PC version first. Both Xbox One (and PlayStation 4) run only what already exists on PC. Ultimately any development progress made now is always implemented on PC first. Should we be worried about DayZ being on consoles? No! Quite the contrary: we need to squeeze every frame, and every possible line of code optimization out of DayZ in order to make it run well on consoles Remember, PC development is console development. It's not two different things. There is work associated with specific platform support and BUG FIXING, mostly in programming and QA, but we're not taking the time of developers that are critical for reaching our Experimental, Stable and 1.0 goals for PC. = (because) PC development is Console development. >> xxP

    Unconscious state

We HAVE HAD grenades in the past .. plus tripwires to craft attaching a grenade to.. ( those devices that it was a good idea to NOT try to set up) .. do I remember correctly ?? - how long ago WAS that? Back in the days when DayZ had rabbits snares ... I think?
  25. pilgrim*

    Unconscious state

A thought Ive had for a WHILE, related to this : . You ought to be able to take the pin out of a GRENADE and hold it in your hand as you move around for any length of time before you throw it.. BUT THEN if you carry out any other hand movement - and this includes being SHOT or melee'd - or putting your hands on your head to surrender.. or being handcuffed .. when any of those happen, you DROP the grenade... OK ?? <nice hu??... take the bandits out with you> Or perhaps BI could consider even just a "DROP" option to go with the "THROW" option, to make life easier for the programmers and more interesting for the players.
