    PC 1.0 Release Date Announcement

there's an interesting question .. assuming bases work real GOOD .. er.. then what* do we do with them ? * [edit - I mean "WTF"] Everyone knows how to get an overwatch on an existing (part of the scenery) military base and how to deal with any poor sods trapped in there .. we've been doing that for years. So what's the difference? Build your own mil base? Get trapped in it by the first folk who come by? sounds great - I'm going to have as much fun as when I was shooting down helicopters. * I agree 100% about the Release Date. This is a big Indy company (now the biggest, with 300+ employees), they can't act like some 5-15 person garage team with a "maybe-backer", or do stuff off the cuff, or fade into the background, or put out the legal minimum to cover their ass if a couple of people get bored and drop out, or put out plenty hot-talk-bull for quick fame, then decide to go back to school instead. BI Produce their own games as well as make them. To go on existing they have to have a strategy that covers all those salaries, updates, running costs, agreements equipment and products and future development (and eventualities) for at least 2 years. - Really.. 100% they are taking this seriously. Also I like their style
  2. Yes - these wolves that pursued me out of the woods took some time off to chase a whole field of cows before they followed me to the village.. looked like they didn't hurt any of the cows though.. cows ran around doubling in all directions because the wolves were running faster and in front of them and leaping at them, so it was chaotic but didn't lead to anything I could see.. I think maybe wolves just cause bleeding (and maybe no shock?) and bleeding doesn't count for anything with animals and zombs. Would be interesting to see a wolf get hold of a chicken.. (heh).. & is a pity wild boar dont fight back. I just had a hand axe.. I shut myself in a cabin and let all the wildlife and zombs get on with it. Really took a long time. xxP
  3. Was followed down from the treeline into a village by wolves. Got into a house and listened to the wolves and zombies fighting it out - hard to tell in detail but it seemed like a whole big fight around the village, and a real quality sound-effect battle around my house. That fight really went on for a LONG time. The wolves don't seem to hurt the zombies much..but that's maybe because zombs don't bleed out?

    PC 1.0 Release Date Announcement

You answered that yourself yesterday Gordon : quote : << it's been done and dusted. GET ON YOUR MEDS! >> - market analyst or games designer or modder or software engineer or Dev or Indy executive or coherent observer you sure aint. Schoolkid gamer.. maybe you are? - do you know much at all about BI except what you read on reddit? The information that has come from BI through this blog is MORE than you'll get from any other Indy Games Designer/Producer, and a hell of a lot more than you'd get out of the Mass-Profit-Corporations. Read what the people who work for BI have said here .. they are NOT free to spout off their own opinions carelessly on any subject (just for the obvious legal reasons, and because they have a common PR & communication objective that comes with their job description, and because they are serious about their work and their players) .. but if you READ what they tell you, it's not difficult to see the planning structure, the direction of effort, and the focus. They are IMO remarkably honest about BIs aims, objectives, targets, and the DESIGN & fault-finding problems that programmers face AND the development structure across 5 studios. All you need to do is READ, and the answer is in front of you. Reading CAREFULLY, thinking, and reaching a realistic overview is easier than ranting, dontcha think? Drag out each BI staff statement involving consoles over the last year - especially over the last 6 months - line them up and see if a picture starts to form. The development plan for PC is right there. Also check what has been happening inside BI over the last year or so. It really aint difficult. Just an aside, while you're figuring out the BI gameplan and their problems & solutions - one obvious thing is : This is a company that does not let down it's players. xxP

    PC 1.0 Release Date Announcement

I think the 1.0 sticker is in fact made for and aimed at Xbox, isn't it? PC getting the same sticker is an inevitable side effect. File it under market forces.

Fix the Forced Night Issue on PC Please!!!

yes, drgullthen seems to have it try along these lines .. maybe gives you a starting point ? https://clients.fragnet.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=128 incorporate dr's technique into a 6, or 8, or 10 hour auto restart (for instance) .. ? A table of "ingame virtual start times" can set a different chosen time, as it steps through each of the series of auto restarts .. you don't have to be around to oversee it.

What do you do when you have too much stuff?

My answer is get a barrel - stash it somewhere in the trees in a good place out of sight where it's unlikely to be found.. maybe not in a wolf area (your choice).. Only carry with you what you need.. bandages, knife, gun, ammo, water container.. & one or two other things ? Then go do whatever you're going to do - explore, hunt, get into trouble, loot, eat, get to know the map, survive, PVP, basebuild, paint the town red, rebuild a car .. But all that stuff, do it AWAY from your barrel.. even on another server .. if you want to put up tents or a base, do that somewhere else - just us the barrel as a fallback. Visit it from time to time (every two or three days) just move items so it doesn't think it's abandoned and wont despawn after a week or so (barrels and tents stay around for well more than a week without you going near them, when persistence is working as it should) .. You can go play on other servers and log back to your "barrel" server in an emergency or to add something to your stash.. a gun, some spare ammo, some food, meat, skins, spare cooking pot, fishing hooks, gas heater, cloths.. anything you might need but you don't need to carry with you.. Generally travel as light as you can.. live off the land - then you don't lose ALL your "best gear" when the wolves eat you or someone shoots you in the back First thing to do is find a good barrel and place it somewhere smart, where it will be unlikely for others to come across it .. Enjoy.

    BI Needs to Postpone 1.0

I think changes in focus and targets, including the direction of Experimental and Stress Tests, are .. {cough) 'related' to console, 100% .. all this tectonic stuff over the last few months is coming from one source for one reason .. obviously.

    CIVILIAN NIGHT VISION

There used to be military night-vision goggles in the original Mod.. They only spawned in one vehicle, and only respawned when the server was reset - but sooner or later everyone had them (who wanted them). The effect at night was like heavy shadowed daylight with a hard green tint, but you soon got used to wearing them all the time in darkness. You could see distances, drive, and fly helicopters wearing them, no problem. They were in the game - everybody used them. By today's SA standards they were "difficult" to get hold of because only ONE pair would spawn for each server reset, (found in just one heli that spawned at different places) but that came down to having to play 2 or 3 or even 5 sessions before you were lucky enough to find a pair. Or steal them off someone else, natch. I dont know if a region like chernarus would have many civilian night vision goggles or (more likely) hunting scopes.. they exist but they are highly expensive, and really not that great. Infra Red goggles are cheaper, but not that great also, for different reasons .. Check youtube for examples, there are plenty. Infra Red goggles would fit the game better than true night vision amplifiers, IMO, because they only show the heat shapes, so you wouldn't be able to tell if it's another player or a zombie, for instance - and your vision in houses or forests would be totally crap. That might be interesting as an alternative to a head torch.

    CIVILIAN NIGHT VISION

Seems IMO that DayZ has always has real problems with "rare" . Despite various iterations of loot economy, players who WANT them have never had problems stockpiling "rare" items. Anyone who decides they want "object X" can get themselves one inside 1 play session, or maybe 2.. Going right back to something Dean Hall said off the cuff, a LONG time ago.. if you play on Official servers (or servers all on one shard), then JUST ONE example of an object somewhere on FIVE servers.. THAT would be "rare".. and no other examples would spawn anywhere on those 5 servers until that ONE was destroyed. If someone picks up an object and puts it in their backpack or leaves that server, or stashes it in a tent (and so it's outside the "loot economy" for the server) and another one spawns to take it's place.. then that object cant be "rare".. After a week or so, anyone who wants one WILL have one. * We saw this happen with weapons.. to slow the proliferation of mil ranged weapons, because however "rare" you make them, they keep right on spawning every time someone picks one up - to slow that down, AMMO was made rarer, because it is expendable and takes itself out of the game, so you ALWAYS have to find more.. so reducing ammo spawns was intended to make "ranged weapons" less easy to equip, because the ammo always gets picked up as fast as it spawns... but that didn't work NOTICEABLY real good, did it? at least it didn't change much... "Common" means you'll find it in an hour or less - "Rare" means you'll find it in 4 hours or less. BUT - if you know where to look, "Rare" comes down to usually under an hour or two, same as Common.. And we know that on 60-player FULL servers, EXACTLY NOBODY is looking for "rare" gear.. they already geared up on other servers and they come to the 60-full just for the fight. So "rare" is a term that should be used really CAREFULLY in DayZ. Their ain't no such a thing, as far as I can tell.. just "very common", "common", "relatively common" and "no big problem if you know where to look" xxp

    My first base raid

seems like good sense to me - this is what bases are for, right ? If you don't want DayZ players to mess with your base, build it at home with Lego & keep your room locked.

    Stun locked with melee weapon

Just a simple toggle key between "firearm-shoot" and "firearm-melee" - would do good for starters. Not just for rifles - you can hit someone HARD in the head swinging with your .357 Magnum or a 1911, no problem. That has to be near as useful as a hammer ? ( & you can definitely kill a chicken & beat on wolves with an empty handgun or rifle, heh) SERIOUSLY - IRL - if you had to tool up for an all-in bar-room fight or a nasty street brawl, which would you choose: - fire extinguisher - hockey stick - firefighter axe - stone knife - medieval mace - AK 74 .. hmm ?? (difficult choice? .. and for extra fun, do I get a bayonet with that?)
  15. pilgrim*

    Stun locked with melee weapon

This is kind of crazy - a rifle is a great melee weapon (even without a bayonet) and always has been IRL. You should be able to block, poke and swing with any rifle. It's a boot camp thing. Carrying a rifle in melee should def NOT put you at a serious disadvantage. I understand the problem of the "one-option" mechanics, same keys for : aim rifle/shoot - OR - raise axe/strike - ... but STILL, ya know ? If you were going up against a guy with a splitting axe, a length of pipe or a pitchfork, would you feel OK if you had a Mosin in your hands, for instance? Better than a stick, right ?
  16. pilgrim*

    Fluffy bases.

problems with playing "Bases" 1) either you're not there, not even logged in 2) or you're inside and the enemy is outside both of those are bad places to be

I just don't have any words left.

thanx Buakaw & GS .. didn't find any info on body regions in the PC scripts. Also haven't noticed it in-game.. but that's COOL. thanx. << ongoing work being done on the new damage system and ballistics >> [Dev statement] - That "ongoing work" was already set up and ready to go 9 months ago. But since then we know they have changed their attitude to ballistics (see Gews comments).. so how far they have gone ahead on the new hit system, I don't know.. or if they still intend to advance, I don't know? Already - if you are shot in your right shoulder (non vital) or in your left elbow (non vital) and only that single part of your body bleeds visibly - that's a new step. And not dropping dead if you are shot in the hand or foot, is definitely Good. But not very very new. And really I am NOT complaining. I aim for head or torso like anyone in a firefight would do (?) Outside those areas is a flesh wound. That's great for 98% of DayZ situations. - this whole discussion started off with PandahFistophacleezeSykes "how come a helmet protects your from being shot in the face" * - to me that's like "why can't you cut a player's throat with a boot knife"
  19. pilgrim*

I just don't have any words left.

Did you ever see anyone losing blood from a foot or from one arm ? - I never saw that yet - (I guess I just haven't lived) - did you ever break an arm in DayZ ? I miss out on so much of the stuff other players experience in this game. So if you shoot someone in the left leg, it will be definitely the left leg that drags because it is broken, not the right ? And if you shoot them in the left leg, they cant ever have a right leg break - and how can you tell if they do.. depends which side you put the splint on ? and if you're bleeding from the knee, bandaging your arm just wont help ? ya know - I have NO PROBLEM with this stuff.. I just look at the two Dev diagrams Emuthreat put up - the 'old' and 'new' hit-zones .. and I say "HEyY it looks like now ANYWHERE that is not 'vital' is just superficial.. but you cant tell in the 'new' where the 'superficial' hit is located.. could be your bum right elbow or your left foot ? Well, it seems like you CAN tell what region a superficial wound is located using the 'old' system.. but it LOOKS LIKE you can't anymore.. so if you're a shootist - for all practical purposes - use your gun like you're on the range and aim for one of the TWO key areas that we all and love .. BodyCore or Head.. plus if you hit the guy somewhere below the waist he might get a broken leg.. but I STILL don"t see any way of one-shot through <<the heart>> killing him stone dead.. ( which some shootists might think is a pity ? ) There is definitely no info comes back to your local game to tell you which SPECIFIC part of the body has been hit, except for the one info = hit to "brain" which can call <headshot> on your local machine. their isn't any "left leg" or "right arm" info sent back to your PC, so there's no way your PC can do a ragdoll animation corresponding to a hit in that specific area - except for "headshot" your PC does not KNOW where your player was hit ( and the general 'life' damage values if you are still alive ) .

    So when you die..

    lucky dude !
  21. Try not to lose your bottle mate, remember you're in public. If you have something you think is useful or interesting to say about BI policy - just say it. That's what this Forum is for. Right? Can you suggest why BI is investing so much money hiring SO MANY servers WORLDWIDE for Xbox DayZ at their own expense (if this is the case) ? - This is a move they ABSOLUTELY DID NOT make through the whole history of PC DayZ SA. It is unprecedented in the history of BI, and it could arise as I have suggested above here and during other discussions in the Blog. A while back I did a breakdown of the corporate finances & structures of the Game SPs that BI had franchised to sell ready installed PC DayZ SA instances to the public. (this is public domain info). I guess you can find that breakdown in the blog if you are interested. The SPs have a front page to impress gamers, but behind that they are usually (but not all) very small organizations (surprisingly small ! ) of only a few people - between 3 -15 individuals including shareholders. This is still not generally known by gamers. Perhaps it is partly the reason BI is rethinking their strategy? Either way - if BI has hired, out-of-pocket, even a couple of hundred servers across the planet to install and update DZ Xbox, then they have a specific objective plus team running that - agreed? They are not doing it by mistake. It's not an initiative off-the-cuff by one person who hangs out by the coffee machine. Enjoy

    Sheltered People Complaining Rant

Yes stay with it Wolf, it's worth it
  23. Thanks for your input. Your overview on BI console strategy is not cogent IMO
  24. So you ARE saying that BI ITSELF hires and pays for ALL the server space to load ALL the instances of DayZ for Xbox. That's a BIG change of policy from DayZ on PC, where BI hired NONE of the server space to run DayZ for PC. is that easy to understand ? * - that's a hell of a lot of instances of DayZ for Xbox - can you estimate how many BI are running AT their OWN EXPENSE right now, worldwide? - they ain't EVER done that before. OK, now I said it all twice - if you're interested, try to keep up. Frankly I'm not THAT interested myself - I think the focus is obvious, the indications are scattered around the blog and between the lines of the Dev notes. You only have to look, AND understand that kind of stuff. BI has changed considerably in 5 years, in scope, style and direction. I guess they have serious forward planning, right? - like any company? How many Xbox DayZ game-instances are BI running at their own expense, worldwide? xxP
  25. So Xbox server instances are ALL hired by private individuals from SPs ? .. no exceptions? .. But the player who hires a DayZ Xbox instance isn't allowed to run a "private shard', he can only hire an Xbox DayZ to run on the public hive, open to any Xbox player ? .. There are no "public" (non player-hired) Xbox servers, every single Xbox DayZ game online is there because a private individual has paid for it ? you sure about that ? - I'll take your word for it if you tell me it's so.. (I ain't checked) but it's damned weird * For myself - I don't think Xbox players can hire DayZ servers .. [ ..interrogates Yoda, asks the AI.. ] .. OK, now I checked - I don't see any sign of that being an option anywhere ? (PC players can, Xbox players can't) So the question is still there - WHO is paying for those Xbox DayZ instances all you Xbox players are logging in to all around the world.. SOMEONE sure has to be hiring (wow!) ALL that server space !! How many Xbox servers are available at the moment, worldwide ? sounds like some investment focus for some reason ? xxp
