    Loving the New Zombies

Zombie hit me once (maybe twice) by surprise - it might have lagged into the store - no one there at all, then BAMTHUD BROKE my ARM RUINED camo jacket RUINED brit military carry vest RUINED 2 canteens RUINED compass RUINED my can opener (!?!) .. the bastard BADLY DAMAGED my pants (or maybe that was me, in shock?) BADLY DAMAGED my boonie hat !! BADLY DAMAGED FNX, but not the sights or the pistol torch and very oddly BADLY DAMAGED the magazine which was on my main gun at the time, on my back AND I was bleeding out, partly greyed out, and had to run like a bugger while he AND his mate chased me into the woods before I could bandage So - all that from one hit or maybe 2 rapid strikes together, inside half a second. I'm definitely pissed about the HAT. No water containers left, so now I'm gonna axe-hunt zombs and DRINK their BLOOD (I'm immune to zombie blood at the moment, I guess. Later I'll maybe fry it up to make sausages and traditional black-puddings). Game much more interesting now. xx pilgrim

    Zombie aggro

In the mod the zeds ran in zigzags only because they had bad tracking - the AI '"saw' you, ran the zombie towards that place, then looked again to see where you were, and ran to THAT place, and so on... so the AI only checked from time to time where the player was and sent the zombies there. Zombies were always going to where you 'were' and not where you'd got to. This is an easy 'low budget' AI to set up. So to make the zombies a threat the devs had to make them run really fast, to compensate for the lousy tracking.. so it wasn't to make them look like zombies, it was just a cheap and cheerful way of getting zombies to chase you. My point is that it worked, and the zombies were kind of interesting too. Also (as I remember) the AI checked to make sure the player could not see the zombie spawn locations, so you would never see them appear from nowhere, even if they spawned fairly close. And you could easily get swamped by dozens of zombs, especially at NWAF - for instance it was easy to get trapped in the control tower if they detected you were there. Also there was a max number of zomb spawns per area, or player, so if you kept fighting them eventually they'd thin out, if you were still alive. And finally their movement before agro was almost random, but weighted, so as they wandered around - bit by bit they tended to come closer to where players were. Again - the stealth stuff was very important to the game. Starting from the beach and finding something to defend yourself was sometimes difficult, and exciting. I dont know how you can deal with getting into a village to find an axe now, unless you run full speed and punch good, but with the one-hit bleed and zombs that can outrun you, and hit you from 12-15 feet, and no way of hiding.... can't be easy :) AND the different zombie skins were cool - there was one fat farmer with a chewed up face - I HATED HIM... I always gutshot that THING. The new zombs just look like they been sleeping rough. The lady with the deep voice needs to wash her hair.

    Zombie aggro

I agree with this. In the mod the zombies were supposed to have "very poor tracking" and be "makeshift", but they never came through walls (sometimes they could hit through walls though). They always came through doors - even if the doors were shut - but NOT walls. If you vaulted a fence in the country, the zombs ran all the way round the end of the fence to get back to you.. and they also walked up stairs, they climbed ladders.. AND they didn't just stand still in the middle of town, they walked about without being agroed, they went in buildings and upstairs and ladders for no reason - you had to hide or evade if a zombie came down the street, maybe it would go on past, they wandered around, they came in supermarkets to hang out... and my understanding is that those were supposed to be makeshift zombies, just kind of cobbled together to get the game off the ground. they were fairly unpredictable, and they were tweaked quite often, but they were definitely OK, they were crazy, they really made the game. There were ways of geting away from them but sometimes even experts got caught out. And also STEALTH was a VERY important in all that... I've crawled through a WHOLE town from one door to another, looking for an axe, with zombies lurching past only feet away,... (and not only one or two, more like 5 or 6). I've crawled across roads right after they went by, hoping they wouldn't turn round... xx
  4. Did you see the youtube vid where a dude asks another guy if he can read to him from the "good book"? Starts reading The other guy drops dead. I cant find the reference, anyone know it?... I swear, it NEEDS to be seen xx pilgrim

    Anti-jumper system

I think OP is talking about combat logging... His idea would be a lot simpler (is this what he means?) if when you logged back to the SAME server inside 10mins, you were put back to the place you logged out on that server. As for server hopping - often I log on to a 15 player server, and I'm at the bottom of the player list, naturally. After maybe 10 or 20 mins I notice I'm at the top of the list, there are still 15+ people on the server, just not the same ones. Everyone else has gone except me and 15 new players have showed up. Maybe 3 or 5 stick around sometimes - but the rest are just passing through. So lets NOT talk about server hopping any more. Just play how you feel. xx pilgrim

    Zombie aggro

Yes for stealth - But in the mod how did you get away from zombies in the apartment buildings when they started coming upstairs to you? The more you shot, the bigger crowd you got at the door. Remember how they walked around all the rooms, step, step, step, step... They came in and checked the rooms from time to time even when there were no players in the building. You say you didn't like them running in a zombie zigzag because you couldn't shoot them... is that bad? - them being more difficult to hit? Do you like them better to run straight at you from 100 yards so you have plenty-bocoo time to aim down the sights ? That's kind of easy, don't you think? But ok, no prob if that's your opinion. Personally I like to have to worry about them. When you were crawling across a field to a helicrash in the mod, and you suddenly see 2 changing direction and walking towards you, and you knew you couldn't stand up or you'd have maybe seven zomb pilots on you fast.. so you turn and start crawling like F towards a bush, to get round behind them ... but then you notice a hopper crossing your path ..now THAT was ... interesting.. xx pilgrim

    Zombie aggro

Yes you are probably right about houses and streets. I've been inside a house, heard a zombie howl at a distance, then after a moment he comes straight in through the wall. But have you (anyone) seen a zomb run through a tree? I've dodged between thick pine trees, and seem to loose zeds quite quickly. I put my gun away to run faster. This has worked for me.

    Zombie aggro

The zeds are not very messed up : If you shoot a zed, pick up your gear and run, or get ready for a fight - more are coming. they hear gunshots as far away as you do they hear you talking too If you fight them, more will come Dodge through trees, or round corners, break their line of sight, that helps If you want to loot, lead them away, circle round and come back If you run down a steep slope with zeds behind you, they can fall and kill themselves, they might even fall past over your head before hitting the ground the (almost) only thing messed up about them is they run in straight lines.. it was more fun in the mod when they ran crazy zigzags - was much more zombie-like And it was good in the mod when they walked inside buildings, and did not run.. it gave you a breathing space but ALSO increased the sense of MENACE (you ran into a barn to bandage or reload, and one by one they start walking in, 3.. 5.. 7..of them just walking towards you.... heheheheh that was nice and in the apartments they WALKED upstairs.. and they kept on coming, a stair FULL of them.... gave you enough time for it to be hair-raising) A GOOD thing would be to bring back STEALTH to avoid zombies... attempt to crawl past them, try to sneak behind their backs when they are turned away. That was immersive for sure! Hmm - but also perhaps these new zombies hit from a little too far off, I think. No fun for new spawns (lol) but that's the DayZ tradition xx pilgrim

What do a mute person do?

I still think we should have text-only sidechannel, with no distance limit It builds a sense of community, it helps players stay with the same server (which teamspeak does not) It makes it easier for Admins to keep tabs on what's happening You may see someone on line for weeks, then you say 'hello', you dont have to team up. You get word when a bunch of strangers show up It's not a gamebreaking thing - only speech over sidechannel was bad in the mod - text sidechannel was good and useful and not misused Mainly it's good for community xx

    Possible new military base?

What the game NEEDS is lakes and streams in the North and NorthWest... lakes still empty, streambeds still dry, and now the one single well in the NW, they put a town on top of it! The damn terrain is already designed and in place, just put the damned WATER in it. Me and the rabbits are going nuts. The NW has been converted into good TANK FIGHTING country, and CRAP survival country ..and now the property developers are moving in. ?? water in the lakes and streams ?? is that a major challenge? xx pilgrim

Anyone Find the Engraved 1911 HandGuns?

Saw a 1911 with a white handle but didn't look close - it was on the landing of a camo building (green mountain?). but maybe someone dropped it there, players had been around, there were zombies in the rooms. also try the gun room of the 'office building/school', seem to be plenty of handguns now at that location. xx pilgrim Edit 10 April: I think now I may be just saw the standard model with the Greek Soldier head on it in white - or I saw an odd reflection of light or rendering without paying notice. I wasnt looking for the gun and only saw it's name in my inventory together with 3-4 other things scattered close. I definitely have NOT seen it since then, and I've been looking out for it carefully. I've found 8+ standard 1911 (and ONE mag, lol) but none with dude grips. Plenty of 1911s (a lot) seem to turn up in fire stations. By the way stuff is scattered I'd say everyone is looking for mags and just leaves the guns lie where they are. Sorry mate - If I find one I'll bring it and come find you.

    DayZ standalone set password?

Quote one Admin who posts on these forums (I won't give his name, he'll probably say it himself) : << no one plays on my servers unless i play on my own, or with trusted players ..every fucker is potentially cheating >> He's telling the truth, he plays on his own - 2 weekends ago I saw someone was on his server ALL alone, ALL Saturday night, so I went over to invite him to mine, because our server was a rave -lot of action, with some kind of squeaky teen military brigade (good nice dudes, ok nice cool) trying to impose martial law and a bunch of anarchists doing.. anything whatever (jumping off towers and trying to catch each other?) The beach road was like D-Day. At the Fields the hoppers and snipers were fighting it out for the Last Gun.. ya know, ya know Saturday Night.. So I went on that Admin's server to say hello - him being all ALONE on Saturday Night - and in the time it took me to see it was INDEED the server Admin, I was kicked. (lol) Like the dude says .. NO ONE PLAYS ON MY SERVERS UNLESS I PLAY ON MY OWN .. I think he probably turns it off when hes not on line. You think that's sad? I think that's sad.. but he doesn't want to come out to play.. he was still there alone after 1 am. OK xx pilgrim

    Is anyone else getting this?

Plenty of servers say 24/7 Day, or they say (for instance) 15:22h. But they turn out to be black night. It's quite common. xx

    DayZ standalone set password?

That's true: People playing on private servers when they are implented won't ruin my tough-guy-full-of-tension-experience I generally read books, but when I want a tough-guy-full-of-tension-experience I hope its not going to be ruined by people on private servers er.. when they are implemented I'd hate that xx pilgrim
  21. Just to quote one Admin who posts on these forums: << no one plays on my servers unless i play on my own or with trusted players ..every fucker is potentially cheating >> Funny thing is, he's telling the truth - couple of weekends ago I saw someone was on his server ALL alone, ALL Saturday night, so I went over to invite him to mine, because our server was a teen nightclub.. lot of action, with some kind of military dudes trying to impose order and a bunch of anarchists doing ANYTHING at ALL So I went on that Admins server to say hello - him being all ALONE on Saturday Night, and I was kicked in the time it took to see it was INDEED the server Admin.. Like the dude says .. NO ONE PLAYS ON MY SERVERS UNLESS I PLAY ON MY OWN .. You think that's sad? I think that's sad.. but he doesn't want to come out to play.. OK Try going on servers that have 5 players or less, on Saturday night (if you WANT to do that). See what happens... Plenty will kick you if there is an admin on line. But a new game is to get eyes on you first, so they can kick you and then kill your body and get the loot. Others just kick because its a 'private' club server and they feel they have the right. But it's nice to see that some servers have started a "we do NOT kick, everyone welcome" policy, in reaction. _ And I'd like to see keyboard-only sidechat - because bit-by-bit it builds a community, and tends to hold players to the same servers. Teamspeak does not. xx pilgrim
  22. why not use the traditional SA Admin greeting? : " Welcome to our server, why don't you effing buy your own. You're kicked. " xx pilgrim

    Where is everyone?

That town does not have loot spawn yet, and no zombie spawn at the moment. It's just been put down there. Some buildings have the front porch too high to get in, another building has a tree in it, some are half sunk in the ground, full of grass. I guess all the wilderness will eventually be urbanized.. that's obiously why there are so many roads around, so many open areas, so few trees (compared to the mod) and so much open space with concrete slabs in it. Would make a very nice tank warfare region, but no good for survival And the lakes up in the NW are still dry, I notice. As for the servers : To me, using a script to Whitelist and Auto-Kick, is the same as using a script to Teleport or ESP. A lot of other Admins don't think so and you will find them saying so openly on these forums. I could quote the "I play by myself" comments, but the Moderators don't pick up on it.. so I guess it's considered an acceptable point of view? I don't care - I like the zombies, they getting better. xx pilgrim
