    Crosshair/Dot gone soon.

The standard thing to do - if you like crosshair - is to put a marker dot in the exact middle of your screen. This has been a normal hotshot action since FPS began You go in someone's house, you can tell what the dude likes to play by seeing that little dot. OK - so this guy is a Serious Fanatic about his FPS. Iv'e even seen a little bit of stick-on transparent film with range gradations marked in carefully on both sides of the point. I don't do this. Because I am a Jedi Master a clause in my contract won't let me do evil things Some mod servers didn't use the crosshair, remember? in the Mod I had a long conversation with a friend, a reformed Serbian Bandit on a Romanian server about how to to aim from the hip with a pistol or an assault rifle, first person or third person. He was GOOD, and a mean snap shooter, had some GOOD tips, .. I learned.. I practiced (damn, I practiced a lot). And isn't that how you are supposed to do it.. by LEARNING how to shoot ? xx - doesn't solve the problem of random bullet dispersion due to fatigue (running) breathlessness, and all.. where the dot jiggles around - but you should be able to figure that for yourself. The only thing I'll miss is using the dot to pick up objects on top of lockers or places where you can't get close to see them in your left-side inventory. That's a fairly common experience. But what the hell. Go for it.
  3. People have already given you this kind of advice, here in the thread, but.. PLEASE Try this link: the ABC of killing zombs for Fun and Survival ..//../topic/183586-new-player-having-a-hard-time/#entry1894173 It tells how to deal with zombs as an inexperienced player.. you need a fireaxe or a pitchfork.. and an ordinary axe is ok... but everything other melee weapon (and your fists) is no good at all for a beginner. And DO NOT try to shoot them uness you intend to leave the area real fast... more and MORE will come. Anyway - the link is the Primer for Dealing with Zombs and Staying Alive. You get the hang of it pretty soon, it works well. Unfortunately there is NO STEALTH in the game (YET) - You can be lying down in a bush not moving and a zombie wil suddenly run STRAIGHT up from further away than you can see him (just about limit of sight) and whack you. Once STEALTH comes into the game [ hey DEVS... STEALTH... ya know? coming SOON right? Good lads! ] then zombies will be a lot more interesting and exciting and immersive. But for the moment, a few practice runs using the right technique will soon get you used to taking them out without much difficulty. You can definitely take on 4 at a time and always win, even if you loose a little blood. Check the link. Enjoy yourself. xx pilgrim

I the game doing it on purpose?

I think it would be good if corpses stayed around a long time after they died, - till the next reset if possible - it was good in the mod to find them scattered on the coast road, outside a hospital, or lying in the middle of an inland village. They added a lot of atmosphere to the game, they might still have useful kit (even a bandage), and they could mean a trap, a sniper, or someone still in the vicinity. They were GOOD for immersion. So it would be fine if they lay there until the next reset. HOWEVER I think it would be great if YOU yourself could NOT loot your own corpse. Anyone else can loot it (even your friends as well as enemies or strangers) and anyone can hide it if they want - but NOT YOU. Maybe employ a deliberate version of that old Mod glitch, where you could click on a corpse but the inventory would always open Empty, so you could not take anything. It happened with bodies and also animals sometimes, you could not pick up on them to loot them. This should happen in SA when you try to loot your own corpse. Both bodies have the same name (the live and the dead) so it cannot be very difficult to implement. I miss finding those poor guys face down in the road with the flies buzzing around them. xx pilgrim
  5. How about a landing craft with one of those military Humvees in it with a couple of Mod 0's on the roof - plenty of food, drink, ammo, and a CAN OPENER And can I look like John Wayne out of The Longest Day too please, and say stupid things ? .. like I'm doing now thanx
  6. I've noticed a lot of USA servers have 'standard' names - maybe this is not such a problem in USA as here in Europe, the ping is usually high for me to look over there. Yes - thanks for the advice.. I appreciate the help. Thank you. DO try out the full server listing sometime, just to see what is happening, because it IS changing the way the game is played already while we are still early on in the Alpha. I was going to add screenshot I stuck together of "Keep Out" "buy your own server" "GTFO" "whitelist' " Clan and friends only" - but I have done this before, months ago, and the situation is only worse now. Even servers with 'normal names' and no "warning" in the title, quite often have autokick too. To set up an autokick or a whitelist at home on your PC is very easy (as everybody knows - no secrets here) there are plenty of programs that read input to the screen, and send out automatic keystrokes in response. These are not 'interfering' with the Admin's server interface, so not BI detectable, they are just doing automatically what the Admin wants to do anyway. I don't even say these guys are right or wrong.. I'll leave all that to Bohemia, the server providers and the Admins to argue it out. But it puts a different slant on the "server hopper" stuff when more and more players are 'crammed' into less servers, while the private servers have as much loot as they care to generate (and they are staying on the public hive, too) To keep the record straight - there are also server Admins that deliberately invite all players to join in. I like these guys even if their servers are full all the time and it gets difficult to find 1 can of beans. They are trying to run a community for all players, and not being selfish about it. But yes - thanks for the advice friend, I will look into it. I appreciate group spirit and aid whenever it shows up. xx pilgrim

    Finding somewhere called home

    Finding somewhere called home

Nice pic Note - some new weapons coming up too... the AKM 7.62x39mm bullet more effectively penetrates foliage, metal sheet (e.g. car bodies), and wood panels [like ?outside loos?], retaining power and reduced deflection over the lighter M4A1 5.56x45mm. It would be nice if this was mirrored in the game. Causes different wound damage too (5.56 tumbles and fragments.. nice). (Gews knows much much more about this than I do) So make sure the insurgents aren't around when you relax in the outhouse to read All Quiet on the Western Front (or keep the bottle in a steel box?) xx pilgrim
  9. ALL you have to do is set your server filter Max Ping to '0' to list all of the servers Set your server filter to "KICK" and SEE what comes up - when you have a good page of "Join=Kick" servers, TRY joining them, see how many let you in.. When you get bored, set your server filter to "PRIVATE" When you have a page of those, see how many let you in.. other terms you can search for are 'Friends Only' 'Clan only' 'Do not Join' 'Character Reset' 'autokick' 'whitelist'.. You will also notice locked servers with players on them Some servers ask for a password, instead of just kicking you in the first 5 seconds. and ETC... OR dont even bother with the above - Just put the Max Ping to '0' and scroll down the list reading what the titles of the servers tell you. EVERYONE knows about this. Really.... this is nothing to do with Battleye login problems, or lag, or anything game-side... Servers that have an ADMIN policy to not let YOU play have been growing for months. There are MANY of them. On saturday night, EVERY server with between 1 and 6 players on it IS PRIVATE (prove me wrong) And I KNOW what the official statements all say about that... (they say 'private servers do not exist'). Im not even smiling, because I know the statements mean 'private servers SHOULD NOT exist'. Even I understand that. But I'm talking about the REAL situation, not what's supposed to happen. TRY IT : if you find a 3, or 4, or 6 player server that you can log and play at 10 pm saturday night, publish it here... A lot of folk will be impressed. You'll find threads about this - but you WONT find solutions. The official stated solutions do NOT work. And really - really - everyone does know this. In fact - with my workload, I play mainly very early in the morning, then don't come home till late. But weekend evenings are DEAD dude, they are HARD... I can play on a 40/40 server, or play on a 250 ping server (which is kinda cool I guess) but if I want a real server with a moderate/medium pop and a reasonable ping, I have SEARCH for one that accepts me and usually have to to wait till after 2 am. Here I am talking about Europe (all of it) - I cant really say what the USA situation is. So who's complaining - NOT me - (lol) I was only pointing out in this duping and server hopping thread that Admins cause a lot of the server hopping, not the general loot spawn itself, and those Admins are BADDER than hoppers... (there are some exceptional admins - and those are the unselfish exceptions I SALUTE). The real 'free server' and the genuine 'join us' servers, are saving the game from fragmentation and chaos - You, the 'open server' Admins ARE THE GOOD GUYS. You do honest work, honest fun, you carry the spirit of this game and may THE FORCE BE WITH YOU. AzrailCross: Thanks for the 'gamemode' advice. I'm trying it now, but the only 'Wait for host' message I get is for 0 players or for 1 or 2 player (probably the admins?) - it's as though the server is turned off? For the rest it is as I say above. Anyway, thanx for taking the time to give me the advice. It is appreciated. xx pilgrim

    Finding somewhere called home

So how are you going to run down to the village - with those 3 good ol' boys with sniper rifles sitting up in the treeline waiting on your front door to open, and their two buddies outside the back in a bush with shotguns ? ?? xx pilgrim

What has the standalone become ?

OK so we're looking for "the perfect multiplayer game" - what is that exactly? Everyone one day will stop making games because someone made "the perfect game" ?? I think what DH means here, is he's seeking <<The Absolute Spark>> . That is what any musician, any game designer, any painter, any creative person, is ALWAYS doing, right ?? If you have 5 albums by your favorite musician, do you throw 4 of them away because you like one maybe 'more' than the others? And probably if you asked the author, he wouldn't agree your fave was his best anyway. AND 90% of the fans (and your close friends too) would say you were crazy. xx pilgrim
  12. I know the devs are dealing with the speed hack (I, and plenty of other people know how that works/or worked) and I know there are just a couple of other possible hacks, already documented (the Devs are DEFINITELY) at grips with those right now. But this one you mention, I've never heard of it, and I don't know how it could be implemented, given the structure of the SA server side and PC script. (it could be done in the mod, but in SA ??) I don't mean I dont believe you - just I don't see how that could work, but I'm not a practical expert, I don't spend my time breaking down games to give the other players crap wrecked game experiences. I'm a human being not a (..put in your own word, ya know..). If this has been reported, the Devs will have a dossier on it and there will be folk tracking it down. If you have video - or even if not, report what happened. Once its even suspected to be a real problem, it will get the attention it needs. So report it. Do good for the community, This is our game. xx pilgrim
  13. Duping sucks - always has done So-called "server hopping" : Well, how much loot can one dude carry? And how many 'low pop' servers to hop are there left? And how much loot are you going to collect 'hopping' from one high pop server to another, because high pop are the ONLY servers you can PLAY ON, now.. Moving from server to server NOW is for me just to TRY to log in to ANY DAMN SERVER without getting kicked, autokicked, whitelist-kicked, friends-only kicked, reset on a beach, admin-booted, etc, because HALF the DAMN servers throw you out after 10seconds to 2 mins, and you have to wait 300 secs to try to get into another one. I can esily spend more time (and in the evenings, maybe much more time) than HALF AN HOUR to even an HOUR finding a low ping server that will LET ME PLAY on it...and if I'm looking for loot (not specially) the only loot I'd really like at the moment is a canteen. I don't want military gear, in general I usually want a axe, a sidearm or any kind of rifle, 10 rounds to go with it, any kind of backpack, a bandage and a boonie hat and IVE GOT THOSE - and MAINLY of course I want to PLAY the GAME wthout being kicked by MORE THAN HALF the servers in the damn list, because they SAY they are private, they autokick, they have LOG IN CODES, and plenty of the rest that DO NOT warn you off ARE private and autokick too. So don't say 'server hopping', say trying to find SOMEWERE, just ANY SERVER where I can play the GAME The Fuck-You Admins and the Private Clubs are wrecking this game REAL FAST xx thanks, pilgrim (yeah, and WE KNOW all dupers are dicks. The 99%of server-hoppers, who cares? And WE KNOW 80% of Admins are dicks and killing the game).
  14. There are some (few) recognised hacks, the Devs are dealing with them in one way and another SA cheating is NOT AT ALL as bad as the mod, where the scripts that a hacker could mess with were on his own PC, so he could more or less do anything until it was documented and detected at the server side. Hacks killed the mod pretty much. Now SA is not on the same basis, there are maybe three possible entry points for scripting that are KNOWN. Those use the structure of the engine itself, so they will be dealt with, Bohemia know about them and are for sure deciding (testing) how to deal with them without messing the game up for players and without opening new entry points for hackers. One or two hackers do it for interest (they'd be be better off aiming at the international banking system, in my view, but they scared because banks can be HEAVY ..lol) Most scripters, 99 of 100, are doing this simply because you can sell your script to SUCKERS for cash, its a variety on internet porn.. no other reason.. and they don't care a damn that the script kiddy gets banned AND hated, or even if the script works at all, once they've got his cash. Its CHEAP, CYNICAL but it's an internet standard activity - "I make-a-buck and everyone can go screw themselves." Anyway - hacking a is LOT less in SA than it was in Mod. SA was built, designed, to deal with hacks at source, to a great extent. I think scripting will die out or at least end up a very minor irritation. xx pilgrim

New Player Having A Hard Time

First take off your t-shirt and tear it up to make 2 rags. You need these as bandages when a zombie hit starts you bleeding. To survive zombies you need a fireaxe or a pitchfork (maybe an ordinary axe is ok too) - dont bother trying to punch or using other weapons (like kitchen knives). To kill zombs safely just KEEP moving round them, as close as you can - forward key and mouse all the time, don't ever stop doing that, do NOT stop moving and turning and keep on hitting them. If 2 show up, do the same, stay close and ALWAYS move and hit. Then (very usually) they cant/wont hit you and you can kill them without injury to you. If you bleed, kill them first, then bandage if there are no other's around. Always fight them in open spaces, inside houses they go through the walls constantly and take you by surprise. If you are not moving, or if a zombie is chasing you in a straight line from directly behind - they can hit you from quite a distance away... So: To get away from zombies, it takes a second to put away whatever you are holding in your hands, then double tap your forward key to run like F. They will follow you a long way, but eventually fall behind. Try running diagonally up and across steep slopes (to keep your top speed), double back past the zombs a couple of times, then when you have some height, run down the slope (zigzag to keep your speed) often the zombs trying to follow will fall down the slope and kill themselves, if not, do it again.. you can get rid of several this way. As soon as you hear a zomb shout/howl anywhere, decide if you are going to fight or run (because its coming to get you), you only have a short time to decide. Put your weapon away and FAST RUN, or get a clear outdoor space where you can fight them. Remember you have to have the weapon held HIGH to hit them. Once you can deal with zombies, you have a chance to look for other loot... food first, (you can open cans with your axe or a knife, or screwdriver as well as a can opener - also some foods don't need opening) you can drink at wells or at natural ground water outside the towns (you have to find out where these are) If you stay on the coast in the obvious places, then of course a load of players have already been through there and taken everything they can find. So you need to go further afield. The ingame map doesn't not work at all untill you find one of the loot maps in game and have it in your hot bar. For a general idea of where you are, to know the map a little, and know (more or less) what stuff spawns where - look at http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus#5.021.115 A lot of players think it is unfair to use this map, but it gives you a first idea of where the towns are, and what you are likely to find there, and the lakes and wells. It's not an easy game to start - just expect to get killed a LOT in the first few trials.. bit by bit you work out what to do and what to avoid - that's pretty fun in itself.. better than having a friend show you everything, in my opinion (but that's cool too, if you know someone or you meet up with a friendly player). If you see anyone, just shout - "Please Help Me!" "I'm a Beginner!" - they will either help you, or shoot you. This game is a LOT of fun, I SWEAR, you just have to take it the right way.. it's not a game that helps you out much, it's more a game that just kills you unexpectedly. Stick with it, in fact there's no other game like it. Enjoy. xx pilgrim

Go to the forest of trees

In fact - if you have ever been camping, or just walking in the forest - you will know that it is ALWAYS in towns before you set off that you get your equipment and gear, knives, sleeping bags, tents, weapons, waterproof clothes, lamps, cooking equipment, fishing poles, bottles, drinks, first aid supplies, maps, compass, watch, matches, and all those cool things you might need in the wild. What REALLY spawns in the wilderness is: wood, fish, acorns, roots, berries, hedgehogs, snakes, deer, frogs, pine cones, mushrooms, wind, cold, damp, insects, electrical storms, rabbits, rocks, leaves and grass, birds, and other similar stuff You can spend a year in the wilderness without finding any fishing poles, first aid supplies, cans of drink or maps. I have a mountain forest starting 100 feet outside my back door and I can swear this is true, if I ever need a knife, I do not go up there looking for one, I just drive down the hill to the store in town. Many of your thoughts are good, but a wilderness does not need spawn points for survival gear (it's a "wilderness" right?) xx pilgrim

Go to the forest of trees

Are these indestructible bases? You can't set fire to them? blow them up? drive trucks into them? shoot the locks off? break in with an axe? Indestructible would be pointless - the country would end up looking like New York. If they can be destroyed, you better hide them good. But there's really nowhere to do that. xx

One one server I had the genuine BE message 'Battleye etc etc etc ..." Then the next message was "1 - 2 - 3 - KICK!" And I was kicked "You were kicked" (no reason given) I just meant that the messages in the corner of the screen can be confusing, or deliberately misleading - though in this case it was very obvious If it is a BE kick, the kick screen will state it is a BE kick - but I still think its caused by some delay between the server and battleye, not battleye itself If there is a delay in logging in - sometimes even before the game screen comes up - you can be kicked by BE for "unable to verify" - (I don't remember the exact words). EDIT: I've just come from a server where the screen corner message, in red, reads: BattleEye Client : (Global) : Admin : BEC: This annoying message is sent to the server every five seconds by BEC And the message DOES repeat every five seconds continuously for as long as you play. So - ya see - these screen corner messages, you have to decide for yourself I guess.. xx

I'm a cynic So I immediately suspect that the "get-off-MY-server" Admins have invented ANOTHER way of messing with the good people I know that white-list servers exist I know that auto-kick servers exist Admin-kick servers exist too - they haven't worked out where to get the script, so they do it manually. (well - everyone knows these exist, there are MANY of them, it's no secret) So I'd be pleased to hear a dev explain that this new "waiting for server" cannot possibly be another way to keep ANOTHER server private. There are so MANY already BattleEye updates automatically, it could be that you have to wait so long to log in that it decides it missed updating you, or it could be an 'accidental' message related to some autokick or whitelist script running on the Admin's home terminal. Are you sure its not just a fake message the Admin has added to his message list? .. there are a few of these around, some funny, some not so funny.. the player is conned into thinking they are in-game messages (you'll find threads mentioning them) Maybe an expert can say something about the log in problem (impossible to log in) - when you can see listed 3 or 5 people on that server, and your ping (for instance) is less than 40 ?? I too would like to hear the technical explanation for this COMMON problem, please? Any takers? xx pilgrim

How about the famous British SAS BEAR TRAP SAS BEAR TRAP is three words, and a bear but it also works for anything that can trip over a stretched cord and it's easy to craft ___ And for off-topic fun, can I make a note for the future: That if you are holding a grenade in your hand, it is live until you put it away And if anyone shoots you, knocks you out, or tries to handcuff you - you drop the live grenade OK? xx pilgrim

My understanding of this (I've had the same problem consistently, looking for servers I can actually PLAY on) is : Only happens on low pop servers, 0-5 players in general. On servers with 10+ players, never any problem. Everyone agree? xx
  25. <<hundreds of empty public hive servers>> ? On Saturday night, ALMOST EVERY server with 10 or less players (usually 5 or 3 or just 1) is a Clan White-List server, an Auto-Kick server, an 'Experimental' Testing we Reset Your Character server, a Start On The Beach server, or an Admin-Kick server, a Friends Only server, a Pay to Play server - or just plain Locked. (And now we also get 'Waiting for Server' for as long as you want to wait, and you can SEE there are 3 people on there, and your ping is >45). So please tell me (with IPs) where can I log to any server with a max of 5-10 players on it, anytime Saturday night from 6pm up until 2am or 3am? - Because I'd REALLY LIKE TO GO THERE (ok, I'm just about joking) - but please look at the server list, by number of players, is all I ask - There are a hell of a LOT of low pop servers - MOST OF THEM - that are run ONLY for the Admin's benefit all alone (1 player), or with 2-3 friends, or for a little clan of 5 or 7. And you can NOT log on those, you are kicked, autokicked, they are whitelist, they kick you by hand, they reset as soon as 5 out-of-town players turn up. So between 'hoppers' and Admins who do not play the rules - I say: what's the difference?? Where are these hundreds of empty servers the hoppers can gear up on? thanx in advance xx pilgrim
