If you ever see Irish flying over, you'll really be doing him a service if you just shoot him down. Maybe pour some water on the crash site if you don't mind? He feels a lot better afterwards.

OH - so we're talking about 3D scopes that DONT zoom, so when you use them 'the game" has to be rendered twice ? I See .... hmmm... excuse my naive mistake. I just noticed when you press <+> the whole screen view 'zooms' in, and when you press <-> the view 'zooms' out, it's the SAME when your character has nothing in his hands, or with a spade in his hands - anything or nothing - EXCEPT when you are looking over an iron sight. So where is the logic in that? Note - of course you can only see things in 3D in the real world when you are looking at the object with 2 eyes. In the real world - (try it) - any monocular scope can only show you a 2D image. AND of course, on the game screen EVERYTHING is in 2D... plenty of game stuff pretends to show you 3D but it does NOT. A real world '3D scope' (are you sure that's the right description?) has to have a binocular, not monocular optic, and a Fresnel-style rangefinder apparatus built in. In fact this IS a rangefinder (as used in focus-changing cameras, which only have a single focal plane). Plus, to be a gun scope our '3D' scope also has cross hairs, and probably other high-tech automisms depending what state-of-the-art we're talking about. A monocular scope, unless you focus it by hand) has to be astigmatic (that means everything is in focus from zero to infinity), and the image is in 2D. Fact remains, you as a human being cannot see 3D with one eye in the real world, and you can't see 3D in the game at all because there is only an illusion of 3D. So the ILLUSION is what is important for game immersion. Hope this is not very boring: As a simple exercise, just a 1 minute demo, , stand in front of a tree in the game, then without moving your character, move your own head from left side to right side of the screen, look at the screen from all angles - you just can't see anything different behind that tree. There is NO parallax effect. The stuff behind the tree is NOT further away, it is just designed to look like it is when your character moves. But try the same thing in real life, you can estimate by moving your head just a couple of inches how far away any object is. You have stereo vision (you have a built-in human biological range-finder) plus you have experience and a whole high-power complex mental processing unit working for you. Anyway, the ILLUSION is what is important for game immersion. That little zoom-in when you 'concentrated' and 'held your breath' worked VERY nicely. Have some beans and let's move right along. Bring back Iron Scope Zoom Please We agree on that. xx pilgrim

Work it out dude I guess you know about the SA controls and the presets? If you don't, ask someone, there are plenty of sites and threads and explanations. Then start at the beginning of this thread and read it. Read Gews. Check out gibonez's comments. Read what Ratter just said above here. Try and understand the difference between a flat screen and the real world. When you feel like you've got a grip on the subject Then make a comment. Think first. It would be a plus if the comment were useful. Enjoy

I guess you have noticed: When you are NOT aiming through anything at all If you press the < + > key the whole game zooms in If you press the < - > key the whole game zooms out What does this all-day-and-every-day zoom-in-zoom-out have to do with wrecking the frame rate? It was built into the game from the first, in ARMA and onwards. Every press of those + and - keys, and the whole image has to be rendered TWICE, and that drops the FPS by HALF ?? OMG! And what about the "adjust view width" option !!!! If you think this 'zooming' effect is destroying everyone's FPS - tell the Devs. Because they are off on the wrong track entirely. How come no-one ever noticed this was the cause of all those FPS problems ? xx pilgrim Listen to what Gews says in OP ( post#1and post#23 ) about ONE effect in the game at just ONE moment in the game he makes PERFECT SENSE

REAL WORLD: In its simplest form, the gun sight is a small piece of iron at the end of the barrel, allowing the shooter to line up the sight with the target. Of course, doing this accurately is a difficult task for the human eye. The eye cannot focus on a distant object and a close object at the same time. FLAT SCREEN COMPUTER GAME: On a flat screen the 'distant object' and the 'close object' are exactly the same distance from the eye. PROBLEM: How can the programmers make the player think that he is using a 'close object' to aim at a 'distant object'? We know that ANY method that gives this impression is false. We must trick the player into an ILLUSION that he is aiming at a distant object. Of course the flat 2D screen is only a few dozen centimeters from the player's eyes, so he cannot possibly see an object 200 meters behind his screen. WHICH ILLUSIONS ARE MOST CONVINCING ? To help create this completely false imitation of depth-sight aiming, it is useful to look at the process that takes place in the real world when a shooter aims at a target that is really 200 meters from his gun sight. Remember that the human eye CAN NOT focus on the gunsight close to the eye, and the target far from the eye, at the same time. It is mechanically (biologically) impossible for the human eye to do that. So what happens when a shooter in the real world takes aim at a distant object? What does he really SEE, and what happens in his MIND? Let's try to imitate THAT. I think Gews, and also Windex above, and the many other Iron Sight Zoom supporters have it right. To me it has the MENTAL FEELING and PHYSICAL SENSATION of aiming an iron sight rifle. I can't suggest a better way of imitating that, in a flat screen game. And its noticable that using an optical zoom in the real world is a completely different sensation to iron sights. The optical zoom 'magnification' dosn't have much to do with what it feels like to aim with a scope. Iron Sight Zoom was RIGHT for the game. Gews explains it perfectly at the top of this thread. It's got nothing to do with rendering or FPS, etc, that's a silly argument. Put it back.

Duping, Server Hopping, and Exploiting- The Mild Cases and the Bad Cases
pilgrim* replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Yes I DO agree with your point 100% - sorry if I went off topic. I was comparing glitchers with hackers. I wanted to say first that a glitch is inside the program (they are program mistakes) so by their nature they get fixed when word of them gets around. Then they are eliminated. So, in a way it's good that players are victims of glitches because that advertizes the glitch and they are fixed faster. But I do NOT condone it - it is evil when some B*tard does that to you. A good Admin will act against glitchers whenever possible. The glitchers are worthless players. COMPLAIN and keep complaining when you find a glitch. We can clear them out faster. I wanted to add meta-gaming - my take on an OP subject - because it's glitch-like but more difficult to sort out. It means using elements of the game in ways they were never intended to be used. Some say that players moving from one server to another "too often" (whatever that means exactly) is one example, And servers using auto-kick, and private member-only servers, is another - though that is really against the rules - but the rules are ignored and it is very, very common. The result is many servers with only a few (3 to 10) 'private' players, and 'clan-only' servers - with plenty of loot, but also with full access to the public hive. And the rest of the servers with 35/40 players fighting it out or desperate to find a can of beans. It is a common decision for those 'genuine open server' players to move from one server to the next, where they can, trying to gear up or just to avoid starving. So I'm open minded about 'server hopping' (I don't like that term) because I can see reasons and excuses for it. But Duping and Glitching exploits just stink. They can never be excused, as you say, i'ts pathetic, to put it mildly. I don't mind an honest sniper, I don't much like players who log inside a key loot building, but I HATE those dumb exploiters. Why do they even play? Beans to you on that, brother. xx Pilgrim -
Proper Evisceration & Decapitation Would Be Nice

<<It's a zombie game that should be rated 18A>> Anyone ever seen "LA HORDE" ? I guess the title in English is 'The Horde" (but I don't know) This film is about as close to DayZ as you can get - check the trailer: doesn't matter it's in french, no one says anything, except swears and reloads and shouts 'kill', swears (a lot more), screams, reloads, swears again There's much more gunfire and evisceration in the full movie than in this trailer (which keeps it a bit cool for the mums? lol) GREAT BEST ZOMBIE/GANG/WEAPONS/BLOOD, most gunshots per second, most swear words per phrase, most blood per square foot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8-MvlmgbAI Go over there and watch some more of it, best scenes, or the whole. Someone tell me if they know the english title, please. xx pilgrim -
Duping, Server Hopping, and Exploiting- The Mild Cases and the Bad Cases
pilgrim* replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Glitches are things that are IN the game, so little by little they are fixed. People discover them, and word gets around. Then they are gone. End of story. A glitch is found, becomes known, it gets fixed. Hacks are things that turn up whenever some no-life-dude works out a way to mess with the game program, so hacks appear (maybe not often), get blocked, and new ones appear. Glitches are just in-game mistakes, fixable. Hacks are deliberate malice from outside, to mess with players, screw up the game, or to make money from suckers. Hackers are con-artists. If they want to show how cool they are they should go hack a bank. Something that might add to this discussion is 'meta-gaming' which is not-really-a-glitch-at-all, but can be used to advantage: sometimes reasonable, sometimes unfair. In the mod for instance, you could scope a town from a distance and see if there were zombies active. Zombies in town mean players are there. That was not at all an intended effect of the zombie mechanic, but you can say that it 'fits' the game, and it's very difficult 'not to notice' them, so people used it. -

Yes but if anything is ruined then when you take it off you can't put it back on. Same with ruined loot. You can use it till you put it down, then its out of play. (I think I'm right about that, seems thats how it happened to me). -

If someone has a working chopper they're not going to leave it parked in the middle of the runway at NWAF are they? (or a bicycle with 2 wheels even) From the mod - if 1 group has 1 heli on 1 server, then it's damned difficult to find. No player or group will be doing a lot of shifting between servers if they're out looking for a heli in a clearing SOMEWHERE on the map p.s. - I only have a tiny brain so I can't work out how this can screw up immersion? -
A story with a moral maybe to do with Iron Sight Zoom, and what is real and artificial about the game. I hope players can figure it out. [For Gews] This little tale has been around since well before 400 BCE Drona was a famous warrior and teacher. Drona set up a wooden bird in a tree across the river, and asked the princes to shoot it by striking its eye. When Prince Yudisthira bent his bow to shoot, Drona asked him what he saw. Yudisthira replied that he saw his brothers, he saw Drona, the river, the forest, the tree and the bird. Drona considered that Yudisthira would fail and asked another prince to step forward. Each brother, about to shoot, said that he saw the river and the forest, the tree, and the bird. Drona was disappointed with them all. But when Arjuna stepped up and drew his arrow and aimed, Drona asked him what he saw. Arjuna could not reply. Drona asked him again. Arjuna told Drona that he saw only the eye of the bird. xx

Is being able to move your eyeballs from side to side without moving your head ... realistic ? LOL Well, that's one thing you can't do in the game, that should cheer you up. You ever noticed you are playing on a flat screen a couple of feet wide, and there is NOT a real world in there? - and when you're playing, I bet you can see both sides of the room outside the screen too... ALL the arguments are in the thread, and in other threads... thre is not only a 'zoom in' <+key>, there is also a 'zoom out' <-key> they usd to call it 'battle view' you ever focussed both your eyes on something to really concentrate on it? etc etc etc etc IRON SIGHT ZOOM - YES xx

Iron Sight Zoom Still YES Ever since January 17 2014 YES

Nevertheless: My informed guess is the 'Nautilus' syndrome. That's the usual city scenario. I saw it happen in Chicago and Baisingstoke. Don't believe what they tell you on these threads - remember this is the internet.

pilgrim* replied to dutchhell's topic in Suggestions
How about a camo mask - face cover or soft mesh, style sniper mask ? -
After you leave the server - or after you leave the game? Is someone following you with a piano? What do you mean 'chilly'? Are you sure its a piano? Are you suffering from the 'Nautilus' syndrome? Is the piano played well? Or is someone with no talent trying to drive you crazy? xx

pilgrim* replied to sobieski12's topic in General Discussion
Private hives only exist in the mod. Yes. But plenty of private servers exist in SA. I think they might suit you, from reading your first post. I was simply pointing out that many servers are By Invitation Only - The standard, joe-normal 'I-bought-the-game' players CAN NOT play on those servers. They are public hive servers, of course, but they are not open to the public. To see a list of these servers, simply set your server list ping to '0' (to list all servers) and then click on 'number of players' to list the servers by the current population. Look at the servers that have between 1 and 7 players on them... Look at the NAME of the server, many tell you what kind of servers they are, and who they don't allow in. I rest my case: If you want further evidence, try to log on to any of those with 1-7 players. You can't, you'll be kicked. To be completely fair, I admit the situation seems much worse in Europe than in the USA, but maybe this is because I'm European and have more experience of closer servers. Also the USA servers seem to change their names less. Note also: in Europe, plenty of servers will NOT 'threaten' to kick you in their description, but they will do it anyway. You can tell 97% of the time, by the number of players during peak hours. I wanted to say that you can very easily find yourself a server where ONLY one clan or one group play, and all others are banned. I'm not talking about if this is right or wrong, or should be, or should not. It just is. So if it drives you mad to have hopper players 'popping out of bushes', then get in touch with one of these many clubs and whitelist servers that exist right now.. 20 minutes ago I ran up a 2 page list (thats 60 servers) with between 1 and 9 players, the top population was 12 ("Clan Server. Don't Join = KICK"). They all ARE private (with maybe 5 exceptions out of the 60.. and I didn't look any further than that). They autokick or they Admin kicks. If you have the time you can find the website of one of these, and get in touch with them. Of course the advantage is you can arm up (plenty of loot) without being hassled by 'hopping' players, and THEN go off to a higher population - really public server for everyone - a server on the same public hive, and have your fun. Or stay on your private own server without being interrupted. I don't know how you go about joining one of those - some say 'Pay to Play' some say 'Friends Only' some say 'Clan Server GTFO', some say 'Buy Your Own' some say 'Join=Kick' So you'd have to do the research yourself to have your peaceful DayZ game without those irritating 1 million other players. Everyone knows these servers exist. It takes less than 10 minutes to check it out. If you don't like the 'open to all players' servers (and I LIKE them) then this is maybe the way for you to go ? Best regards ps - "server hopping" is a wrong term to use anyway.. Dean makes sense, he's intelligent, he has ideas. His way of expressing himself is original - like his game. -

Dont worry - look around - there are MANY private whitelist kick servers with only 1 player, or 2, or sometimes as many as 5.. there are A WOLE LOT OF THOSE SERVERS... So just join one (pay your dues or join the clan, whatever) and you won't ever have to worry about other players ever again.. Enjoy -

What's wrong with 3 or 5 or 8 different player's popping up every 4 mins at NWAF, in the bushes, in the buildings, in the hangars, and shooting the crap out of each other to try to get whatever loot is left, and rushing off 3 mins later to do it again? On a good day there must be 200 people go through 1 control tower... with an average stay of 3 mins..and a good death rate. I think its GREAT, they all kill each other, and rage and shout, and snipers LIVE in the bushes full time... For some reason that's all BAD, but 'hopping' to a full server, to hit CHERNO in gangs and groups and mass fighting to the death is GOOD.. I don't get it (but I don't GO to NWAF, lol, ... I lost my LRS) xx pilgrim -

That building has windows too. Anything at the airfield is going to have a scope on it a lot of the time. Players turn up every 5 mins, especially on 'low pop servers' - watch the player list change! If you are new but not a tar you'll also know about the 'glitch room' at the other end of the first floor corridor in the 'police station'. People glitch through the wall into the closed room, and wait there for honest players to come by, then shoot through the wall. That's what I understand, there are plenty posts about it. You can never tell where a bullet comes from when it killes you one-shot, unless you see the guy aiming at you. I don't think the zombies are bugged ( except WALLS, natch..). Probably they are set for future tweaking and changes but they sure make the game more interesting now. It's really not a good idea at all to shoot zombs, that just spawns more of them fast. They spawn close, already agroed, and come to where the action was/is - so get away before bandaging. To kill them use a fireax or a pitchfork, those are the most effective. for different views and plenty of stuff about the new zombies see this thread and this thread and this thread These here are just my ideas, I'm not an expert on anything. Maybe some real sharpshooters could add their thoughts to this thread - but snipers tend to not talk a lot (I dunno why) -

Snipers: Getting shot through a window when you are in a fire station tower is a real standard sniper shot. It's not a very difficult shot and there are plenty of good snipers. Best thing to do is to run up the last few stairs and go straight into a corner between the windows. Don't hesitate a moment. Then when you want, dodge across the window fast to the next corner. The sniper will be working out what your next move will be, so don't make it easy for him. It's a lot easier than you think to see someone moving about in a building with windows, and if you see him crossing from left to right (for instance) you know he's moving up, and in a few seconds he'll appear in front of the window on the next floor. Snipers love that stuff. Zombies: I was kneeling in a ground floor building, with a soft hat on, zombie came through the wall and killed me with ONE hit (like a headshot?) - I was fully fed and watered, no stress, peak condition. then dead. Usually when zombies hit me by surprise like that (because that's the only way they can hit me now that I've learned how to deal with them) they just ruin everything I've got in my combat vest pockets.. like even my can opener? And ruin the vest too. So I never keep anything useful in those any more, just food and cans mainly. If they chase you up hills - run in zigzags to keep your speed at max. Don't hold anything in your hands then you can run faster. Try running back down the hill (also diagonally for full speed) - they try to chase you and often they fall and die, if they don't then just do it again. Don't ever run in a straight line with one following behind you anywhere close, they can hit from 15 feet behind you. But if you zigzag, or even run back past them, or run in circles round them, they cant hit you as long as you ALWAYS turn, never stand still or run in a straight line, keep pressing the max forward key and use your mouse to turn ALL the time. When you get the hang of it, it's fun. Enjoy xx pilgrim -

My understanding is the 7.62 because of the bullet mass and energy, tends to leave 'small' entry and exit wounds (goes straight through) so higher survivability, but the 5.56 tends to tumble in flight and then to fragment on entry, making by far a much bigger mess. The advantage of the heavier 7.62 is that it penetrates cover - undergrowth, wood siding, metal car bodywork - better than 5.56 and with less deviation Neither of these differences are reflected in the game, as I understand. AND I want to point out I'm just a guy in the street, NOT an expert in any sense.
