    DayZ Prostate exams!

Very nice.. Well I'm sorry, I'm going to have to shoot you.
  2. pilgrim*

Can somebody tell me WTF just happened?!

You're kneeling and she hits you just as you shoot. You get the Zombie Headshot. I guess maybe your helmet was not pristine, or you just had bad luck. Same thing happened to me, except I didnt shoot, I was kneeling and the zomb came through the wall, so there was no confusion. IMO - in the past I have shot a zombie dead with an FNX, and she hit me, and RUINED the FNX I shot her with while it was still in my hand, then dropped dead. Evil zombie.

How to know which servers to avoid?

LISTEN UP - HOW TO ESCAPE FROM BEING A NEWSPAWN There is no way to tell which servers will log you in on the beach as a fresh spawn, except by trying them. BUT if you want to get your stuff back DO THIS: --> 1) DONT MOVE AND DONT DO ANYTHING IN THE GAME 2) Dont even click on Log Out in the game screen (this is how I do it, maybe AGBenny's way works too, but my way works for me 100%) 3) Just GO TO WINDOWS and CLOSE the DayZ program from windows. Just shut it down from outside Then start it up again, and log in to a different server, or log in to the server you were on when you HAD all your gear OK. If you do this, very often you will have all your gear back. It always works for me. BUT if you stay on the beach as a newspawn even for a minute, or you pick something up, or you look in your backpack maybe.. you will probably be saved to the hive as a newspawn, and then you're stuck. So as soon as you land on the beach, just go into windows and shut down the game, dont do anything inside the game screen. If you were not killed on the last server, this will get you out. xx enjoy

  6. [sorry - here's another long and boring "but", from a friendly boring person] Yo Crazykage! You talk about "realistic" and "accuracy" ...but.... I'm wondering what that means in a simulation. I'm not against your point of view, I accept you have real life marksman skills (I don't) ... BUT In a computer game, shooting at a stationary target.., you place your mouse pointer on a pixel and press Left click and every bullet will go to exactly the same point - unless a variable of some kind is added to change the trajectory. It's that simple. You put your mouse to the same point on the screen and the bullet goes to the same place. You can do that 100 times in a row and you have exactly ZERO dispersion. You are operating a computer - it's designed to give the same result every time for the same input. That's ZERO dispersion - that's (lol) CONSIDERABLY less dispersion than mounting your real life gun on a bench, and bench firing it at the target. (and maybe less fun too) So if you want fun in your game, you have to have some kind of variables that you - with your skills - can learn to overcome, and (maybe) you have to have some variables that are less predictable, so that even with your great skill, and knowledge of the game parameters, and guns, you may sometimes do better than other times. (kind of like it happens in real life) In real life I've shot with guns that were definitely USED.. the dispersion was terrible and it CHANGED too, not even predictable.. ( I mean, ya know, a pretty totally crap gun...) Guns like this really exist. Collectors and shooters would not have forums, events, journals, where they boast and discuss and get excited about the accuracy of a specific gun - not their OWN skill and accuracy - but just how great this ONE gun is by itself, whoever shoots it - they wouldn't do that if ALL guns were 100% ACCURATE now would they? AND gun people ALSO (it's a different thing) have personal accuracy shooting competitions, and sometimes a competitor will win today, and then tomorrow shoot less well. If I found a gun that had been toted around by a squaddie for 3 years, plus a few months of war conditions before he fought for his life and then got eaten by the zombies.. I'd be pleased if the damn thing worked, I'd check it and clean it, and try it out WITH CAUTION.. and if it could hit inside a body shape at 50-70 yards then YES Great, I'm ready to go, dude - and got ammo too. I don't know where - in real life - people can pick up a second-hand rifle they've never seen before (as you point out) perhaps not very well maintained, put on a sniper scope that they FOUND in a GARAGE.. and expect to hit things 1000 yards away... But sure - this IS a gun game, not just a survival game. A lot of people with gun knowledge like to play, some military or ex-service folk like to play. Guns are important in the game.. Young non-gun, non-military people like to play too, some of them maybe because the weapons are "realistic" to a playable extent SO - what kind of variables do you want in the game? .. are you starving? are you injured? dehydrated? have you just run a long way? are you AFRAID? is the wind blowing? has your gun been sighted in? how's the rifling? is the ammo GOOD quality? did you get dirt down the barrel when you were crawling through the woods? And bottom line, how GOOD is the gun anyway? when did you last clean it? where's it been? is it a standard issue, standard unit, not-very-rich-country, fairly-well maintained rifle? or did it come out of a locked safe in an expert dedicated shooter-collector's country house? (on the internet you find plenty of photos of real-life war zone combatants carrying firearms that I would not feel good about having close to my face to let off a round). you CAN have variables to IMITATE any of those things, or you can have NONE, and hit 100% exactly in the same place every time you shoot - because that's what a computer MUST do unless you tell it different - in the real world you're actually using a MOUSE not a gun in this game, and you DONT have an injured arm, you're not cold or low on blood, etc.. so (with NO variables) you put the mouse in one place and then Dont Touch It and shoot as much as you like and every shot will go to exactly the same point. You dont have to know a thing about guns to do that. So it's really down to what kind of variables you want, to imitate physical and material conditions, and imitate a human being in the country, under stress, in the rain, whatever.. which the player is not ... the ballistics are calculated by the computer and they DONT EVER CHANGE unless variables are deliberately introduced in the calculations, to add unpredictability and difficulty. So what variables do you want? For instance, what variables can we use to imitate the difference between a RL marksman and a 14 year old who has never handled a gun? How do we do that? Or what variable would give a RL marksman an advantage in a computer game? If you're over 22, a 14 year old has better eyesight and faster reactions than you. And I've heard that moving a mouse cursor from exactly one point to exactly another point, is something a woman can do typically with higher accuracy and repeatability than a man. (just a note - the one thing computers CAN NOT do is generate RANDOM sequences. It may be "sufficiently unpredictable" to LOOK random to you, but its not. Its a variable, you can check its parameters if you want to, and find out exactly what it does to each trajectory, to make them different) xx pilgrim

Yeah sorry about that, real tragedy.. Here, to make it up - all we could find you was this old 47 with Bling OK?

Where in god's name am I?

You cant do that, unfortunately - its not a place - you can't log in there, you can't get out, unless you're lucky.. in the mod ive been lost in there and found bodies of the dead littered to the horizon.. it's limbo, its the afterlife..

Motive of the Cold War in the game

A bunch of ultra-rich power brokers discovered that if you infect humans, turning them into zombies, you can then extract an immortality drug from their pituitary glands. The virus escaped. Chernarus is an ex Soviet-bloc country. It was equally anti East and anti West, and wanted to remain independent. I don't know when this happened. The infection is recent.

    you call that jumping?

so - you try to jump over the fence, but you CAN'T jump, and then you get shot (pisser) or - you jump over the fence, start to run, and then find out you got shot BEFORE you jumped over the fence (pisser) so maybe its good to have the human input and the bunny hop animation a lot slower than the pingx2 + server process time

    Improvised Rifle Scope

"Working out where the cannonball will go" is probably by far the main interest and research subject that has led to us sitting around playing computer games now. The idea of differential equations was only proposed around 1700 without practical applications, by theoretical mathematicians. What we call Ballistics, an applied science (mechanics) did not exist before 1800. It took, for instance, about a century before Newtons laws of motion were accepted and found useful in "the real world" (that's us normal folk, right?) So for example there was a smart "normal" French guy, in the 1800s called Brianchon - who was a mathematician and gunnery officer. Educated at the Ecole Polytechnique, which was the top level science and engineering school, re-organized in 1804 by Napoleon as a military academy for science/engineering study. Brianchon had a geometry theorem named after him AND became an artillery officer in Napoleon's armies. Moral of the tale: At the time, if you had the required abilities, maths and warfare were ONE subject, which previous to 1800 they were not. after 1800 schools everywhere were teaching ballistics. Before 1800, design and use of artillery in the field, was based on trial and error, tests to draw up range tables, and just downright personal experience. This is pretty contemporary, if you think about how long folk have been throwing things at each other.

    you call that jumping?

Fair point (though when you suffer from lag you are not "going back", the server is putting you where you <really> are and not where you "think" you are - yes, as you say, server precedence) but - seems a fair point I would have to think more about the unexpected effects, for instance on combat situations, and how they might be misused - or just misunderstood by players. Jumping is being treated as an interaction, right? and not as movement ... ? xx

    you call that jumping?

Yeah, and if jumping is client side you have all the half-bakes scripters in the world flying around 4 feet off the ground in "perma-jump", and a million players going nuts about 'hackers' - apart from this problem, I agree it would be slicker xx

Also find morphine in the jail cells and as often in the office(school) building 'medical room' . Sticks are more rare I think. Chernarus saying - "You have to wait a long time for a stick to fall out of a tree"'
