Is anything being done about damage taken from falls?
pilgrim* replied to karlkurtz32's topic in New Player Discussion
To replace ladders as the main cause of death the devs could maybe introduce kitchens, to make the game more realistic -
Is DayZ being developed right in your opinon?
pilgrim* replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
zombie pathfinding using procedural < navmesh > is being implemented right now, I understand. This is a major change, a different way of doing things, it is MAJOR stuff. I guess this counts as "work on the zombies" right? anyone who wants to can esily look up "navmesh" on the web, and find simple intros and explanations, videos, or more detailed technical info.. if they feel like finding out what it's about. Have fun. xx -
As I said < very nice video > the quote "Im sorry Im going to have to shoot you" is from A Fish Called Wanda Let me explain :

How can I put this? Oh I'm a bad person, I'm evil minded, because when I was waiting for your reply to my minecraft example, I was waiting for you to use the KEY phrase "It's an exception to the rule" HaHa - you didn't want to say it, but you SAID it.. Because (according to MY rule) every pseudo-scientist, and every person who defends their own illogical arguments, to pretend to twist what is real into only fitting their mistaken view of it, has used that "its an exception to the rule" since the middle-ages. since the Romans, since effing Alexander the Great, dude.. You won't have heard of Alexander the Great, he was a wrong-thinking idiot who thought he could change the world - he didn't know you "cant do that" - and he only had one lifetime so he only changed half of it.. he was some kind of "exception to the rule" I guess... Yes - but nevertheless the Earth Still Turns, and the Spanish Inquisition tried to stop it turning for 150 years.. but who remembers them? The Earth is an "exception to the rule" I guess, the Earth went on doing it wrong... and Minecraft is an "exception to the rule" too, lol.. And that guy who had some "market" conversation about computers and went off to build a software called Disk Operating System (DOS), that later became "Windows". I forget his name, I'm not impressed, and anyway he didnt get far, he only made megabucks, he did it all wrong he didn't understand "the rules" So I worked on your theory a while longer, and found the bits of logic that clearly don't fit, and tested examples that don't fit, and THEN I understood the main point. For the theory to work, I have to do this - for instance, when I say "Minecraft" and when I say "DayZ" I have to pucker my ass up in a different way to say each of them. Then I start to feel like I understand. Really dude (friend) take a fresh look - you might end up making megabucks too.. The EARTH TURNS xx pilgrim [sweetness and light]

Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?
pilgrim* replied to SomeCallMeNomad (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
YES! Lets split it man ! YES ! -
Yes: "to put that in perspective" It's well known that the US Army keeps all its military service personnel records on one old Pentium 4 computer too, because it doesn't have to update them so many times an hour. And that the entire British National Health records are kept on a grand total of 10 old Pentium 4 computers - that's because the Brits have 60 million folk to deal with, and are so inefficient - they could probably do it on 5 if they tried harder. Maybe you could help them out?

Bohemia host a server called the Hive with over 2,000,000 entries on it, constantly updated, each entry containing every detail of location, total equipment and state, for every player-character in the game worldwide, even if a player has only ever logged in once. That must be a pain in the neck to run. xx

I don't know BI's policy, but considering confrontational MMO is a mega-area now - that sounds like a really good idea -
Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?
pilgrim* replied to SomeCallMeNomad (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
When you say "small studio" and "they should just have built their own engine" .. there has been a little more going on around BI and the specialist BISimulations than you see in this forum, maybe you could it check out - it IS interesting : US Army Training Systems and Bohemia Interactive Simulations + Calytrix integrated training Ya see? its interesting in itself, also gives you a wider idea of what's going on besides DayZ , and about where the RV3 engine - VBS2 and DayZ SA - finds use at the moment Some well known organizations think its worth spending money on also search Calytrix on the web, if you want more on that side of things xx pilgrim -

Ok, thanx for the explanation, I still don't see it - but let's plug in an example. A funny little game (I didn't like it) that came out in 2009 was called Minecraft.. bit of an odd game, unusual, not good graphics.. it caught on for some reason, maybe because the graphics were so crap: <<minecraft was publicly released for the PC on May 17, 2009, as a developmental alpha version and, after gradual updates, was published as a full release version on November 18, 2011>> ok - so it spent 2.5 years as an Alpha... hmm.. and STILL with crappy graphics, AND idiot gameplay, hehehehe BUT by 2014 - that's "now", it has sold over 14 million copies for PC and 35 million copies total How does this fit into your "simplified" theory of "satisfied market" game development? Just as an example? To help me understand.

Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?
pilgrim* replied to SomeCallMeNomad (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I think often when 'many/most' players talk about the engine of a game, they are really thinking of how amazing the glittery graphics are, and maybe about how the camera works in the game... it's popular for the developers to go on about their fabulous engine, because its a nice buzzword everyone can use, without risking too many people knowing what they're talking about.. but easy to remember and reapeat.. from the outside, just playing a game, its difficult to judge what the engine is doing, except by seeing how fast the glitz goes past, unless you are an insider (I make no claim). It's a bit like watching cars compete, maybe? Or watching wrestling on tv? -
Please do not consider this post offensive. I thought about your statement and EVENTUALLY it made me laugh. So in good spirit I just want to look at it a moment. I hope I don't make an enemy here. You say: << I know how money and how markets work, and so far I'm not the slightest bit surprised as to what is happening with the slow development>> NOW at first that sounds like it 'makes sense' but the more I look at it the less sense it makes, and I'm really NOT that dumb. So this is interesting, because in fact it makes NO sense at all to me, so I'd like to ask you about it. You know how money and markets work You're not surprised by the SA slow development OK.. now I combine those two statements and try to figure WHAT you mean and I ask myself WHO could say that and WHY ??? a ) You are an armchair commentator pretending to have insider information but have NONE ? b ) What you say is true and you are personally EXTREMELY RICH ? c ) You are the director of a small failing company and you are BITTER ? d ) You are a late-evening chat host seeking to start a controversial "intellectual" discussion with your expert guest (i.e. you're TROLLING, in fact) ? It could be one of these, so I was going to ask if there were other possible explanations, because maybe you do KNOW how money and markets work, hmm? hmmm? , and then I UNDERSTOOD.. ... wait .. wait I've got it... e ) You are actually BILL GATES !! it fits... that's why you don't know about "GAME" development... Yes! hi Bill! HI! How do you like the game? Hey DUDES... - its BILL THE BIG 'G' HISSELF - it's autograph time! In case I'm wrong, please explain what you mean by the sentence: << I know how money and how markets work, and so far I'm not the slightest bit surprised as to what is happening with the slow development>> thanx xx pilgrim

Yep - scrim OR a bit of camo net to go over helmet, or hang in front of your face like veil. The helmet scrim breaks the outline a bit, but also the face is the main thing that shows up at the moment if you are wearing drab clothes. I wear (crap) shades just to cut down the outline and color of the face, because there is nothing else in game. So GOOD idea and beanz. I've also suggested a sniper/hunter mask a couple of times. They are common and commercially available even on e-bay. In RL you would find grease sticks in barracks, or you rub charcoal on your cheekbones. Not complicated. Well - the face shows up and the damn backpack shows up too - why cant we spray it green or black a little over the bright color flashes ? - this would be the first thing I'd do with a hiker backpack, get rid of the flashes or paint them drab. (Also - I'm not a sniper, I just live in a bush sometimes) xx pilgrim

Wow - I see you got History sussed out then ! Did you research it or did it just come to you ? One question - where do modern crossbows fit into this 'medieval technology' ? I'm NOT saying a crossbow will win against an M4 in a street gunfight (the bullet could deliver 200x more energy than the bolt, we know, there's a thread on it) but if you ever see in RL a guy ready to fire a modern crossbow or a modern compound bow, really DONT stand in front of it. Check the web and "crossbow wounds/crossbow injuries" BlackLable is looking for info from people who have used it in game [edit] I think when we have STEALTH around zombies in the game, the crossbow could be very useful. I've heard at the moment the zombies react to a crossbow as though it is gunfire, which - if it's true - is stupid. xx

Yesterday I played the Mod after 200 hours of Standalone.
pilgrim* replied to Bambi Population Control's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The Admin for each mod server can set the max ping he wants on the server. You can play the mod with no problems with a ping of 200, easily. But a lot of admins were tired of strangers turning up just to maphack and wreck stuff and then go off to another server, so they set the max ping quite low to limit players to "regional" people. It's true - in the mod there were no ping problems as such. Ive always played very correctly with a ping around 180-200 on one of my fave vanilla servers. No rubberbanding no invisible players.. if the other guy has a ping of 60 it means you STILL have only a difference of 150 milliseconds between you..you SEE the dude all the time, and thats short enough to still have fair fights, no problem. With a high ping you might have login problems, but once you were in, you were OK, so long as you were inside the ping limit set by the admin. One day the Admin on my usual server, where I had friends from 2 years, set the ping down to 200 to discourage the wandering script kids, and so from time to time I got kicked, in the evenings my ping went from 170 to 210 sometimes. So at last I quit playing there. If you can find a vanilla mod server, it is WORTH playing, even if there is no one else around. Find yourself a machete and use STEALTH to get started. If you feel brave go up to NWAF and try and stealth your way in, or have a BIG fight with a lot of zombies that actually come running in through the DOORS and climb the STAIRS ... hahahaha GOOD stuff. Taking on NWAF alone is definitely not for beginners. I understand why the VARIOUS ping problems appeared in SA by moving important stuff to the server side, to defeat the scripters - (and in the mod you'll maybe still find some old sad scripters wandering around regretting all the fun they USED to have) - but in the mod, ping was really not a problem in gameplay. OK so that's why each admin set his own ping limit, but its not defined the same for all servers (default was 200, open to be changed), so look around and you might be lucky. It's a FUN game and you also understand Standalone better when you see where its coming from, and what BI might want to do with it. xx -
