Make server restart warning compulsory
pilgrim* replied to General Zod's topic in General Discussion
You can wait for up to 90 seconds max if you leave a server and try to log on again straight away (same server or another server) There is a countdown timer on screen while you are waiting This delay is to prevent 'ghosting' If you have to wait a long time to log in, and there is NOT a countdown timer on your screen, then you have some other problem Sometimes you can get a "please wait" message, and wait for a long time (or forever) without being logged in. Best try another server. xx -

Make server restart warning compulsory
pilgrim* replied to General Zod's topic in General Discussion
Is this your opinion of other players ? If I were you - ya know - I'd kick off every player who didn't have his own server Your view is every player should pay for himself, right dude .. why should you be their welfare check ? anyone who doesn't have their own server shouldn't ever come play on yours - I guess you must think of that as being a kind of theft have a nice day dosn't this stuff make you laugh ... just a bit ? -

WOW - this is how Euclid and Albert Einstein started !

( two shoes or two pairs of shoes ? .. all 4 of these shoes the same size?) You voted NOT to have a five minute warning ... BUT you want to have a five minute delay when the admin restarts the server. whatever - it would make the admin wait to restart, but the players would get the restart without being warned. well -the point of a poll is for people to cast their vote as they see fit, no prob. I put in the link for info.

What items can you use to skin a animal?

the M4 bayonet also works .. gets blunt quick -
But you never quite know what new things might turn up in a patch.. that the devs omitted to mention it is kind of disturbing when you are in the game the first time I got a "you have just °°°° in your pants" message... I was, for a moment, .. worried maybe you are the first to catch the DZV (DayZ Virus) good luck

oh dude why do you say "hard earned money" when you mean to say is "its my money I can spend it on any 'fuck-you' activity I like" ? we all earn money maybe you mean server admins have more difficulty making their way in life ? it's harder for them to earn their keep than it is for normal people with brains and muscle etc ? I hire a server from a server provider my money is earned, it is not "hard-earned", because I don't have a fuck-you attitude. I work and I get paid. "hard-earned" means "next I'm going to complain about grifters and whiners" "next I'm going to complain about all these people on my back pushing me down and stopping me from being a man and turning my life to crap" etc etc. I don't have that problem. I notice you also say in your work you have to deal with the public and you don't like them. I guess when you play you have to deal with other players and you don't like them either ? Someone who hires a server and then treats players like °°°°, with disrespect, and messes with their game is NOT doing a service to the community, they are paying because they want to °°°° on other players. the next time you're facing a member of the public at work and that client spits in your face and you ask why he will tell you "because I'm paying for this place and paying for your time and paying for you to be here, with my cash so I can do what the °°°° I like, my hard-earned money pays for this and if you don't like it you can quit the job and f-off." You'll understand that, won't you ?

it's the server admin trolling you I think, the server texts can look like your avatar messages (unless you caught the plague and it's the first symptoms of turning into a zombie, hmm?)

You only hear the chainlink/gate sound when in the region of habitations, right ? In the Mod - when there were zombies close to every building, I used to expect zombies were close when I heard that sound. This worked (I was 90% right) OK - so in fact it was really me moving into a "habitation region" - but I think this could provide a good solution to the "woods" sounds If the chainlink/gate sound only plays when I am in a "habitation" region, it means that the region must be defined already Same for "woodland" region.. there must be a defined "woodland" So: The server checks that I am in "woodland" and plays woodland sounds at random. Suppose the server also checks if another player is in proximity ? It must already do this because of "the player bubble" mechanism (network bubble) If player is alone in woodland, then play "woodland sounds a,b,c" at random If two players are in proximity, in woodland, then play "woodland sounds a,b,c,x,y" at random sounds x,y are sounds you only hear when another player is around .. and you may not notice them, and if they are random they may not play.. but there is a chance you will hear a rustle or a bird warning cry that must mean another player is close. So you will have to pay much more attention even to the unsignificant noises you already hear. Yes ? xx [if the "sounds" proximity detection is based on the network bubble it can not give a hacker more information than he already has access to, so is not a vulnerability - and using the player bubble also means the processing effort required would be very minimal. I'm open to correction, also... I have an "area of interest" doubt..]

Why Randomly Spawning All Over The Map Is A Bad Idea
pilgrim* replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
... yes, I do so see your point ... Has any serious person ever proposed random spawns across the map, at any time, anywhere ? By random I mean aleatory, of course. I mean: vice pan-cartographical spawn randomisation ... random spawns were never slated for implementation were they ? Spawns on or close to the coast are by far the best solution. 1 ) Do not destroy from the outset a new player's opportunity for initiation within the game 2 ) Establish a practical non-sanction impediment nullifying the utility of suicide respawn 3 ) vice PvP - is there a "clusterfuck" in Kamenka at the moment ? 4 ) You have understood the significance of the development team's ongoing alterations to spawn placement. It's a pity you don't want to expand on your outlined solutions. No other fair and practical spawn dispersion can be implemented, other than coastal region spawn -
this is true : when I went to Green Mountain I died very quickly and did not have time to notice anything unusual at all (because of the axeman) I only noticed that from the top of the inside ladder it takes a long time to fall .. it's ..FAR

Don't go there. DONT read this thread. (edit: after merge - now I mean really don't read it ... because you're reading it already)

Why Randomly Spawning All Over The Map Is A Bad Idea
pilgrim* replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I agree that random spawns are not a great idea, but I don't know if this has been proposed seriously. Specially for new players, or inexperienced players who do not know the map by heart - reading the forums shows how many problems these players have already. Random spawn would be very unfair and discouraging. Beach spawns are about as much as new players can be reasonably expected to cope with. As for storage - in the Mod players positioned tents completely across the map, wilderness, town, well hidden or not, so there is always a chance of spawning close to a tent, once spawn locations are scattered away from main city areas, whatever the spawn distribution. We know that the devs are interested in different spawn distributions. But no one should expect the devs to radically alter the existing map, while they are still adding to it. I think beach spawns work well, and they are fair to inexperienced and new players, which is important. Perhaps someone has suggestions for other good locations for spawning players into the game? -
Wow ! A really bad thing about Green Mountain I just found out is: if you climb the damn ladder all the way to the top there's a dude with an axe waiting for you.

No that's true he is not hosting a server to make players on his server happy he's paying out of his own pocket to have an advantage in the game and it works .. hey, hacks work too don't they.. that's why they are such a problem and a pain in the neck a lot of players want to play fair, and don't like that game-breaking stuff if the admin wants to pay for unfair game-breaking advantage, he can always take his game out of the public hive, right ? then he can play as unfairly as he likes the public hive is where the players live, dude shouldn't mess with honest players ya see ? private servers will be here in a while, then admins can be as fair/unfair or as 'special' as they like - clan only, or pay to enter.. whatever but that's not now messing with the players on your server to get them to GO AWAY is cheap, not adult, pathetic .. it's sad sad kids stuff °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° AND an obligatory - built in - 5 minute wait before the admin can restart his server, with a restart message to warn players would SOLVE this problem for everyone.. and there wouldnt be anything for anyone to get worked up about - admins could still loot farm, they could still kick players as they like.. they just couldn't do instant restarts. Problem solved. Go vote.

I think the point of DayZ (back from the start of the idea) is you are not supposed to overcome the difficulty and danger.. sooner or later it overcomes you if you get to a point where the game is easy, or habitual, or it doesn't scare you or stress you to be logged in either it's time to find another game, or you are sitting in a small corner of a big game, and it's time to go out and find the rest of it I hope the second option is the way it's going to be xx

Do you want to see persistant storage disapear with player death ?
pilgrim* replied to massacrorBKK's topic in Suggestions
This seems interesting Suppose you have a persistant tent, or a stash, that is about the same as a backpack now. So you could keep gear in it but NO main weapons - only a shotgun or a pistol, as well as other 'small' loot. You could keep spare stuff in it while you were alive.. food, matches, knife, ammo, whatever.. but it would not be an endgame stash when you got killed. In the Mod, the real "endgame" was in fact the experienced uber-players with a couple or three of tents hidden on two or three different servers, full of collected hardware. So being killed meant you only had to log in and go back to any of your tents to gear up completely. Then you wandered around (not afraid of death) and picked up choice items from NWA and helicrashes. You could have 2 or 3 of everything "rare" stocked away, if you wanted. Plenty did this. A persistant stash with no weapons space might give the best of both game styles ? [edit: but damn yes, it's true.. in the Mod - hunting and following until you track down a tent camp full of leet gear, and either destroying the tents, or staking it out, or taking stuff you want from time to time..that was GOOD gameplay. I admit it, a lot of players got emotional or went postal totally, over camp raids] -
See Jexter's poll and Beck's suggestion about exactly this pretty much everyone agrees - except only one or two bad admins who won't name themselves
-
no timer also, admin can do that for knee-jerk revenge .. its very easy to do.. it's a kind of combat log for admins in that situation, I'd be deeply suspicious certainly if there were 5 or less players, plenty of admins would do it without the slightest thought a number of admins do not run their servers for 'server population'

Why Randomly Spawning All Over The Map Is A Bad Idea
pilgrim* replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
No, it does not To say no one goes there is not to say an object is "hidden" No one goes there because at present there is no game element in those areas As soon as it becomes known that players stash loot there, it will be sought, found and taken In your OP you say: "There are more elegant, ambient, and subtle solutions to encouraging non-linear player mobility" - that's quite a mouthful. But you don't say what they are. I would like to hear them. xx Costal spawns are cool, especially for new players -
Do you want to see persistant storage disapear with player death ?
pilgrim* replied to massacrorBKK's topic in Suggestions
wow - difficult question dude. To keep the game sharp: I think the answer has to be Yes - when you die you loose everything. but what happens if storage is shared, if the original owner of the container - the person who placed it - dies ? then it all vanishes, right ? what happens to vehicles, barricades, bases ? I guess these things can't hang around "for ever" just because someone created them once... so what to do ? e.g. you build a base (or plant a tent) you fill it with stuff - when you die the stuff vanishes, does the base or the tent vanish too ? suppose it is a friend's tent - does his stuff vanish, or only yours, or neither because it is not your tent ? An easier decision is about dead bodies I would very much like to see dead players stay in game for quite a while (and bring back flies too, they were cool) BUT I want it to be impossible for a player to loot his own body So you can ask your friend to loot the body for you, or other players can loot it, but you yourself can't. -

?? You used all these words to say "if spawns are random someone might spawn close to your tent" this is sententious xx
