  1. You got it about right as far as I can see . I'm in favor of this system. But just a couple of points. If you think about the whole "rarity" argument that has been going on for ages (specially about 'heavy guns', it's clearer): you say <<IE NVGs, total number of spawning permissions from the HIVE is 2. HIVE grants rights to spawn 1 NGV at server 1 and 5, total number of servers in the group is 5. Now server 1 and 5 have 0.1% change of spawning NVGs while servers 2-4 has 0% change of spawning NVG.>> This is the wrong way round - in fact... If you have 5 servers, the central hive says "we are going to have 2 NVGs".. so 2 NVGs WILL definitely spawn somewhere on the 5 servers. There's no doubt and no percentage of chance about THAT, the 2 NVG WILL show up (so there's no "unfairness" in that). . So before the spawn, each server has a 40% chance of getting 1 NVG. See? For the calculation - 1 between 5 is 20% and 2 between 5 is 40%.. got it? This would be easier to see if there were 3 objects and 6 servers, then the odds would be just 50%.. so 2 objects and 5 places means each place has a litle less than a half-and-half chance of getting one. In fact a.. 40% chance So now the 2 NVGs are in the game. So for a while NONE will show up now at their spawn points. If you want to put RARE objects in the game, this is the only way to do it and stay in control.. even if you say (the system we have now) "every server has a 0.5 chance of spawning a RARE NVG object", you could still by chance have NVGs spawning three times in a row on ONE server.. or maybe 17 NVGs spawning at one time across 50 servers...just by chance. My argument about RARE items has always been "how rare are they??".. if you know the percentage chance of them spawning in the normal -present - spawn way, and you say "this is a 40 player server" and you know that plenty of players KNOW where the NVGs spawn.. and you know there is one spawn every 4 hours .. then you can work out how long it will be on average - AND it is really not long - before everyone who wants that RARE object has got one. OR ELSE you make the RARE object so extremely rare - like a 0.00001% chance of a spawn every 4 hours on each server, that most players will not even see one for a whole year of play..Then you would have a situation where1 server HAS 1 of these RARE objects, and 1 player has got his hands on it.. AND of course, in that old system everyone will be "server hopping" across ALL the servers like mad to hit the "SUPER RARE" object spawn point before everyone else. SO with centralised loot you KNOW exactly how many of these things ARE in the game.. you can see what kind of events, shit, excitement, happen because of that object, and you can put MORE in the game, or take some OUT (as they are destroyed, or they leave the game because the owner doesn't play any more [like the tents in the Mod] or you more quickly de-spawn them as they are dropped) People were arguing a long time about RARE and i asked ANYONE to say what they meant by rare, what percentage chance of spawn, how many spawn points, how long before one turns up on 'your' server.. but no one EVER answered.. OK, so with the central spawn system there is a central count of how many of the NVGs are out in the game, and you can adjust that as required to fit how the play goes. ALSO, no point in sitting next to a known spawn point waiting for one to turn up, or server hopping like mad, if the set NUMBER of NVGs are already out in the game. Not one will show up at a spawn point on any server. You have to go find someone who HAS one.. So you need to ask around, hear what Rocket called "rumors", and for instance for heli parts.. go there and find the guy, and fight, or trade with the guy. If you have a whole heli but ONE part is missing, and a dude on another server has that ONE part, its no good to him at all.. he could trade for it, he could hide it.. but it's no advantage to him to keep a part that would make a heli fly on ANOTHER server not even on his 'own' server.. yes?? He could go to that server with his part, and JOIN the TEAM.. be one of the team building that Heli. So this is to do with RARITY.. and in all the previous arguments - especially about guns - NO ONE has shown HOW to make a gun RARE in the current spawn system.. they are all vague about it.. "just rare man", "just relatively rare dude", "this one really RARE" ..but NEVER saying how the HELL you make it rare, and what RARE means in MATHS TERMS, and how you control it. I think when people talk about rare, they are really thinking "Im a really cool player, I will have one but no one else will have one" That's their real idea of RARE.. We can all see how BADLY that would work. So - central loot CONTROL - very good idea.; AND the numbers can be altered as the game goes along. As an example from not-rare stuff - If you find a LOT of people are dying of food poisoning, and fighting over antibiotics (it happened in the Mod) then players start leaving the game because they are fed-up of never finding antibios and dying from damn food poisoning ALL the time, nothing to be done about it, and there are no antibiotics in any of the damn hospitals, .. OK then from the central system you can feed in a few more.. just up the total number that are circulating in the game.. get it to a level where people will still KILL for antibios, but they have a fighting chance of GETTING some before they croak, even if plenty still die.. then they will think its a tough game, but its worth staying in it.. they won't just leave and go back to CoD instead.. Theres one thing I want to say about SERVER HOPPING that is important IMO I play across several servers.; but not to "hop" (as they call it) - not to look for gear.. there are plenty of those people around all the military places so I only go near them from time to time.. I'm not a gear freak.. It's more fun to find a helicrash by chance and - hey- an M4, neat... or just pick up a shotgun.. or a Longhorn, whatever.. good enough.. I enjoy all kinds of stuff, don't need "gear collecting" as a big hobby. BUT the word 'SERVER HOPPER' is really - please, think about it - a RACIST term.. its an Insult and its used on purpose as an insult. This is just like racism. "You are a HOPPER" - that means you are a shit no-good worthless person, right?.. The word HOPPER means exactly that, and that's why it's used. I could quote other insulting words used about .. women.. black people..white people. foreigners... physical handicaps.. words used to insult anyone who is not the SAME as you .. but I won't quote those words because they are damn insults and disgusting words used deliberately to make someone less human than you are.. (we have some laws about that stuff, now) So saying "hopper" is not REALLY talking about what truly happens in game or about WHY it happens, to share some helpful ideas ..it's just an insult so that you don't have to think what is really going on. I move from one server to another.. I have 3 usual ones.; but some nights I may try out a different set of servers, or one I've never been on, just to see what it feels like there or what the players are like (and I get kicked plenty of times, even though I only go to servers with "friendly" or "public" written in the admin's DESCRIPTION) So I think "server hopping" is a wrong way to talk, right from the start. It's like saying "you don't come from here, dude, this is OUR 'hood.. we don't LIKE you, we don't like what you ARE" Talk about changing servers, talk about SHARING servers or EXPLORING servers...MEETING new PLAYERS..even RAIDING servers... Sure, at the moment there are a lot of people who go from one server to the next just to collect loot (but let's not call them 'gooks' ok?) . but with the new central system exactly that WONT work any more.. This is what Rocket was talking about... so any discussion about central loot that starts off "server hoppers" - is NOT about central loot, its about "this is MY server.. you are the wrong color, the wrong nationality, you come from the wrong place we don't want you on OUR server"... that"s all wrong.. I mean ... its just . wrong ... ya know ? I know we've all got the habit, but as soon as you say "hoppers" you've stopped Discussing any more, you're only Insulting. And that makes you just another damn REDNECK. I wanted to say that. OK Zeppa - thanx.. apart from that little statistical thing in your post.. sounds like you and I have got the same idea of how GOOD this Central Loot system could be. Let's see how it goes. The time is coming to move on and get to better things, right ? It will take time, but to me it looks as though it could be good. Note: I explained a "statistical" thing about private servers (shards) - and private server groups a while back, I'll put the link as soon as i find it ( http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/208359-will-private-shards-use-the-central-loot-system/?view=findpost&p=2089466 ) Point is - it all works out fair for public hive or shard hive. Myself, I stay with the public hive because I like being part of this REALLY BIG worldwide community.. but some players have also pointed out the real good points of shard hives.. not just the usual "fuck off this is Mine" attitude. xx pilgrim
  2. Thanks Cheeseburger8 - I appreciate that! - but I'm just putting together what people have said here, and other players have said earlier. I got my information and ideas from the same place as you, from playing, and making the mistakes, and working it out AND from hearing what other's say, and thinking "yeah THAt happened to me too... I'll try that". Even if many players give shorter comments, or are 'harder' on you, or make jokes.. you start to recognise which ones are always worth reading when their names come up.- you get to know the most interesting names and go to see what they say, it's usually worth it. - And the people who only say one or two lines - plenty are better players than me, I could quote some good names, but you'll find them bit by bit, so - Enjoy. xx Enjoy

    Some suggestions

"combine vitamins and matches". i understand you JC. Yes vitamins and matches - you find a bottle with 3 vitamin tabs and a bottle with 5 vitamin tabs you should be able to combine them to have 1 botle with 8 tabs in it. Anyone would do this. wouldn't you ? Same as pouring water from one bottle to fill up another bottle. Also you should be able to do this with matches. Today, if you find a box with 21 matches and then you find a box with 47 matches, you throw away the first box to keep the second because it has more matches.. you should be able to put all the matches into one box, so you now have 68 matches. (say a maximum of 70 or 80 matches?) And also, you maybe find 3 water purification tabs or you find 5 of them.. whats the differenc, they take up the same space - why cant i carry 8 water purification tabs in ONE space? I can carry 2 packs of 2 each (in 2 spaces) , but I can also carry 1 pack of 5 (in one space) .. so why not put them together? Same with antibiotics.. you know how much SPACE 4 antibiotic tablets take up IRL ?.. you know how much space 7 antibiotics take up.?. So do the same with them as with rags and ammo.. Combine. JustCaused is right. Hey - same with worms - remember empty cans in the mod for boiling water? - these will come back (i hope) when water becomes risky again to drink from streams and lakes - you should be able to collect worms in an empty can, until you have penty of worms... (say a top limit of 20 ?). AND you can dig up worms with just about anything.. bayonet, knife, empty can (tin lid) , screwdriver, you can dig worms with a stick, really.. Man, IRL if you kick the ground up with a bootheel and pull out some earth with your bare hands.. you find worms. Also you ought to be able to mine rocks with a hammer.. take a look at that hammer in the game, dude, that's a rock-breaking hammer for sure.. Geologists use hammers smaller than that. Off topic, but while I'm mentioning tools - nobody ever sideswipes with a pitchfork if they want to kill someone. You'd have to be seriously strange to try that. You stick the damn pitchfork straight in their neck or in their chest, right? (or in the groin, heh). How you going to hurt a zombie swinging a pitchfork sideways at it ? For the mountain backpack: Maybe a square of camo net could be used as a face mask, or put over your head, or put over your backpack? I've got a bright red mountain pack right now. (only big pack I've found) - I think you can see this RED all the way through to the other side of a forest. Why can't I rub dirt or mud in it? Spray paint it green (just the red part)? Tie a bunch of grass on it like for the Mosin? Pull a burlap sack over the top of it ? I guess if you were really trying to survive and stay out of sight, this must be the FIRST thing you'd want to do - hide this damn color.. so I agree with JUSTCAUSED there too.. Seems to me there should be several obvious ways to do it.. *** And - my own beef - I kill an animal and make a bag from the skin using a piece of rope, I put all the cuts of meat in the animal-skin bag.. so how come now I can't pick up the bag in my hands and carry it in my hands? I have to wear it on my back ? - that's crazy. If you are hunting and butcher an animal, and you wrap the meat in the skin (that's serious survival hunting, for sure) then you do NOT drop your own backpack and put the skin bag on your back. I did this last week on a persistent server, made the bag, put the meat in it - couldnt pick it up? OK,so that's.. screwed up - but .. I go off to the woods 50 feet away to hideput my backpack under a tree, to come back for the bag of meat.. I come STRAIGHT back (like less than about 150 seconds later, for SURE) dead animal gone (ok) bag of meat gone (not ok). I run back to my backpack and THAT was still there, thank you Jesus. But I won't try it again in a hurry. I just want to tie up the meat in the skin and pick that bag up in my hands. Or simply take a burlap sack out of my backpack, put the cuts of meat in there, and carry that back to my camp.. with my backpack still on my back please. That burlap sack, says in the description its good for instance to keep potatoes in. So how many apples can you kep in a burlap sack? Your other ideas, I've no set opinion.. except I like helicrashes ,BUT there should be zombies around crash sites.. military (pilot) zombies.. and we should have STEALTH to try to crawl up to the crash without the zombie pilots spotting you. Interesting list JustCaused. There is stuff in it at least to make people think, even if they only 30% or 50% agree. xx pilgrim
  4. This is all good advice on this thread. My beans to everyone. You can tell each player here has learned "the hard way", they are all talking sense. A big reason military people train and train and train again IRL is so that, when it comes to the real situation, even if their brain is completely frozen with adrenaline/panic/fear/excitement, they can still automatically do the things they are supposed to. In the game - getting used to firefights and learning by your mistakes is the best way .. Always remember too, that one of the most fun parts of the game is starting on a beach in your underwear and trying to find enough stuff the stay alive; You can do anything you think of because "what difference does it make?" - you've only been alive 5 mins - you learn from each new spawn life however short it is. Nothing to loose. So remember that newspawn feeling when the next shooting starts - loosing the shootout just means you get a chance to run around in your underpants.. you can go straight for the nearest police station, see what is on the whole main street, talk to anyone, try to punch out someone who is kitted up.. whatever you feel.. it's much easier on your stress levels than thinking you have all your good stuff on your back and one wrong move looses everything. Don't get attached to your gear, or maybe keep your gear to a minimum (throw away stuff, really!) .. and hey - with the new persistence, they tell me you can hide your backpack under a bush, go into town just with a shirt and your revolver or your SKS, and even if you loose ... your backpack will still be under the tree when you finally get back to it (though this may not be true, quite often? there are different opinions but it seems to be getting better? ). Just don't get attached to your gear, it's only stuff you need to survive, if you don't survive, you don't need it, and you get the chance to go look for new gear, meet new players, have fun. Apart from that, the adrenaline is always there, you learn to control it better, and you learn better tactics to deal with different situations - For instance, as Steak says, scout ahead, think ahead, think round the next corner, and across the next open space, check every treeline, sit and watch for a while without showing yourself, and PLAN. Then if you get into an unexpected face-to-face, it's because you made a lazy decision, a greenhorn choice, or you didn't think it through.. in fact YOU put yourself in the wrong place and that's already YOUR OWN fault, from 5 or 15 minutes earlier, it's NOT the other guy's victory, he probably plans and thinks worse than you, but you ALREADY made the mistake before you met him. OR (like many players) spend a couple of weeks heading straight for Berezino every spawn, and pick up an axe, a pitchfork a stun stick on the way, or even run in empty handed and see if you can find a fresh body on the street with a full assault rifle still warm.. (ya probably WILL) and you WILL get killed a lot, but ATM that's what Berezino is for, and you get used to it..It's the 'survive-2-hours-max' version of DayZ and can be big fun too.. completely crazy.. but fun. (Myself, I stay away from there..) There are many tactics and techniques and good tips, , as you see from this thread, but when you're GEARED into the 'serious' phase of survival, been alive a couple of days or a couple of weeks, then you WILL get ADRENALINE for sure, just for fear of loosing the GEAR.. .. the best bottom line is KEEP PLAYING.. don't let yourself get caught the same way twice. I lost all my gear - chosen carefully, worked out, exactly what I needed for long term survival and self defence, this Friday after 3 weeks of play, because of one really simple beginner's mistake.. Just ONE slight error and I knew it half a second after I moved.but that's a whole quarter-second too slow.. only ONE slip.. and then... one shot and bang/blackscreen. I just made a real noob move 100% ... hmmm... I KNEW never to do that, and now I REALLY know, I have the proof as well as the theory....at least I wont forget THAT soon. How could I have done that?.. am I dumb? I know better. But WTF.. after looking at the black screen long enough (as long as you like, nothing changes) - then you get back to the beach, ya throw away your flashlight, check where the F you are, tear your shirt into rags, and go look for stuff before you freeze.. life is simple again, and fun. That's the game... it was designed to give you adrenaline and STRESS.. seems to WORK, yes? In fact it sound's like you're enjoying it. The biggest rides at the fairground are always full, right ? This is it right here. This is not a game where you can predict what will happen in the next ten seconds.. you can do your BEST, but you can't ever know..and YES the Youtube guys are looking cool because they are on video and they know it, and they show you the 12 minutes of bits that make them look GOOD and throw away the other 15 hours. But even then, when you have experience in DayZ, you see PRO Youtube vids where you SEE 'the heros' do stuff all wrong, without even noticing how badly they are playing, and, also where they don't even understand the way the game works DayZ SA IS a great game. People who tell you it's "easy" - you just say "oh yeah?" and ask them how they got killed LAST time (heheh).. not one of them ever says, "it's too easy, I've played since the start 2 years ago and I never got hit once by anything." When they say "its too easy" they mean they are still alive after maybe 4 days, they didn't get killed today so they don't know what to do next..they just don't count the deaths as being part of the game... gunfighters die young xx. Maybe also (?) - join any clan of - NOT street-fighter pirates IMO - and learn to coordinate with them, teamwork, that's a 'military training' in itself.. you can learn plenty, even if it's not the way you want to play for a long time. And think about these comments in the thread above - each one in their different individual unique way, they're ALL survivors..
  5. For my idea again of terrain cellars - a square terrain pit under a building, as steep sided as terrain can be, with access by - for instance - an opening trapdoor in the house floor and a ladder: This post is to say I found a kind of half example of this on the map. It's not super exciting to see - but If you go to 022 044 there is a barn there. One end of the barn is built over a steep terrain slope (I guess it's not been well located yet). So if you walk round to that end, you can go down the slope and walk UNDER the corner of the barn that sticks right out over your head. The floor of the barn is above you. Go check it out, it's on the map at the moment. Tonight ! OK - so this barn demonstrates my cellar idea. - You make a square pit in the ground with the sides as steep as possible. - It's a simple terrain feature, so you make the pit out of bare earth texture or out of rock texture. - You place a barn on top of it so that the barn overlaps it a good distance on all sides (so there is no danger of player glitching). - In the floor of the barn above the terrain hole you put a trapdoor - exactly like a standard door but horizontal instead of vertical, opens and shuts the same. Or even no door, just a square cutout in the floor - You put a ladder down from the barn floor to the bottom of the terrain pit underneath. PLEASE - Let's DO this ! So then what have you got? a trapdoor and a ladder leading down to a DARK underground earth or rock cellar. Can this be bad? The only technical problem I know at present, is that doors are vertical in DayZ, so you need to create a horizontal door entity (can't just use a door laid flat, because doors ARE defined vertical). BUT you can instead have a staircase down - maybe no door, so no extra programming, but just an iron staircase down from inside the barn. Or no trap but just a ladder, like a ladder off a crane.. whatever variations you like, or are EASY.. or build a standard wall with a door in it and stairs down like we have already in many houses. The beauty of this (I think) is that it's DARK down there. - OK I'm sorry - I repeated nearly exactly the same post as above, http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/212565-underground-sectionsareas-of-chernarus-metro-system-caves/page-2#entry2133760 I apologise: II's because I'm EXCITED by this idea and I just found an example on the map that seems to show it CAN be done.. right now.. without creating any new structures or objects or textures, just using exactly what we already have in the game now today. The barn (or the big 2 floor barn/factory) can be perfect for this because those buildings have enough floor area to locate them over the terrain pit with plenty of overlap on all sides, so it should be glitch proof (as much as most stuff is). No one can get stuck between the terrain and the floor, etc, no one can slip (or crawl) down the outside of the building into the cellar..because the terrain-cellar-pit is small compared to the big floorspace located over it. The floor space spreads out well past the location of the "terrain-cellar"And if the hatch and ladder go down into the middle of the terrain-cellar, then there is no interface between the house and the terrain feature that can be exploited..All around the edges, the building is standing on normal flat ground-level terrain. See - my FIRST idea was to build a terrain pit and put a house IN it, so the ground floor would be underground, and the next floor up would be at outside ground level. BUT the problem with that, is the (big) possibility of glitching down the side of the building from outside (trying to go in or out) and so getting stuck between the outside underground wall and the side of the terrain pit. (total bummer). So I scratched that idea, and instead thought of this simple terrain feature trick, just a 1 story DENT in the ground with the steepest sides possible, and a building floor that spreads well outside the limits of the terrain feature when the building is standing on top of it.. Plus a hatch and a ladder. All this stuff is already in the game, it all works .. and "the only thing" needed, is for someone to make a steep pit in the terrain and put a barn over it, plus a ladder down. An opening trap would be cool, but I think that needs modification of the existing door parameters, because doors are programmed as vertical, its not currently an option to have them at different angles. (Hey - if the angle could be defined, then you could include skylights onto roofs too, even sloping roofs..). But using existing elements just a small room with a vertical door that opens onto a stairway or ladder down, can be built right now.. A hole in the floor with a ladder down can be built right now, and it's the simplest "proof of concept". Also maybe a trapdoor would not be a great problem, it's a door with a definable angle from the vertical.. especially because a trapdoor it could be used for other interesting stuff later in development. (trapdoor on a flat roof at the top of the ladder, so you have to open it .. dont know who's up there. .. also would be good to add one or two on the ship structure.. you can probably think of some other interesting uses. OK so go to 022 044 and check out this "badly placed" barn and see how it sticks out over the steep slope at the corner. With what I said here, you can see that the whole thing could work NOW.. It would be great to do the same in one or two town houses.. but placement is more critical .. maybe a cellar (terrain feature) that runs under part of a block of houses, with just one entry ? Even a fairly small cellar space down there can be interesting gameplay. Good place to hide in the dark? DANGEROUS to go down there. Loot spawn? (players wil think of ideas) All this is without suggesting any furniture, any house textures, nothing except 'terrain bare earth' or 'terrain rock'. Anything else more sophisticated could come later? And there are objects that can be placed directly on terrain, to clutter up the cellar a bit. S0 - Sorry again, I've spammed the same post on you here as I did on the last page of this thread. But I've done it because I'm CONVINCED this is a GREAT idea and VERY easy to implement NOW.. I WON'T DO IT AGAIN I promise. But I'd LOVE to see someone pick up this idea and run with it, even just to TEST it. And if I've missed a technical problem, please someone explain it to me. So many players talk about underground stuff, and here's a way of doing it NOW. And how can that not be a GREAT gameplay addition? Please do tell me if I've missed out something important, or got my programming facts screwed up. thanx xx pilgrim.

Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

well - here's a contrib to the Encyclopedia ok I'm not a language expert and I apologise up front if I offend anyone by mistake, especially the Welsh, but also - everybody - because people have strong opinions on these subjects. In the 1700s German was the main language in Bohemia, not Russian, not Turkish, etc, and for good reason. At the least, German had replaced the West Slavic language (regionally "Old Czech") which was "fading away" and German was the most important, the 'official' and 'cultivated/educated' language. You could perhaps compare that situation to contemporary Wales, where English is/was the single universal Welsh spoken language for a long period, however great and ancient the Welsh-language tradition was and is. Welsh was still always spoken "in the hills".. but in our modern times roadsigns are in Welsh (and English), my own driving licence is in both languages, and Welsh is again an official (call it a 'national') language. But the majority of the population will not claim Welsh as their first language. There was a Czech national revival in18th and 19th centuries, strongly including the Czech language, among intellectuals and political/ethnic nationalists and writers/poets (getting close to our own time period, historically). I think this was a reaction against the Hapsburgs, the same thing happened in many places across Europe.. for similar reasons ('even' in the Germanic states, where this radical idea of 'nationalism' started off a whole load of stuff). Interestingly (IMO) at the present day we are going through another wave of 'regionalism', where many people are more interested in their own local or regional culture/literature/tradition/'nationality' than the values for a long time imposed on them by the "big" powers that previously overwhelmed those languages and cultures.. Until recently Czech and Slovak were considered to be (completely) mutually intelligible languages. The differences between the two are increasing, especially among young people (I'm told). I think this means that since they established their seperate countries and identities the populations are going their seperate ways (starting with the younger folk, natch.). Slang becomes normal language, ways of thought become ways of speech, and then ways of speech become ways of thought.. ya know.. Language differences and changes (I swear there IS a point to all this - more or less): For instance, many western folk do not realise that "Arabic" can be very (extremely) different from one country to the next - so that different nationals can not understand at all, or hardly understand with difficulty, each others speech - this is way stronger than just different "dialects" I think. But people in each of these countries can understand the same written Arabic, because it is a classic and universal written language (maybe like Latin was in Europe in the middle ages?) * So.. as for RUSSIAN in DayZ.. My take is that it is a kind of "safe joke". Russian is a standard well-known language like English or Arabic (it's the largest country in the world). So if you write the road signs in Russian you are deliberately pointing out that this is NOT any central European state. Plus there is also good chance players anywhere can find translations if they really want to look. In reality Czech is seriously more similar to Polish, than to Russian ...[ but Polish, for me.. is just all greek written backwards (or maybe upside down?). I REALLY can't suss it at ALL, sorry people, I'm fairly dumb ] Therefore - GOOD idea to put the roadsigns in Russian, its a "safe bet".. And as for the names.. well.. maybe there's a kind of joke in that too: due to Soviet history plenty of 20th century Russian towns have Big Heroic Industrial names, while on the other hand some little places still keep the name they were stuck with in the 10th century when they were the only group of houses you could find in a long day across the steppes (see the photo of Kazakhstan just below, for example) and in western Russia also, from Poland to the Volga the whole place is pretty FLAT, and it's a long long way everyway, so villages tend to have very.. 'not complicated' .. names. yes ? I think "Electro" - Electrozavodsk - is a GREAT name (that's got to be a slight sense of humor in there, right?). There is a Ukrainian ultra-modern rapid transit underground station called Electrozavodska (no relation?). Central socialist urban planning in the 1960s chose that city (Kryvyi Rih) and Volgograd as the two test locations for new experimental futuristic urban techno-development. The Ukrainian language is much closer to Russian and Belarusian, with an extent of mutual intelligibility. Not similar to Czech, which is closer to Polish (but I said already) There is a town called Chernogorsk in the middle of Siberia (same comments?). I like these names ! [end of lecture.. ya know, almost] A note in support of the Ukraine: - The Ukraine (once Kievan Rus' the core from which the Moscow-centered Russia eventually emerged) has been declaring and fighting for, loosing and winning back, its independance repeatedly since before year 1000.. early on was arguing with the (Turkish?) nomadic Khans, then the Vikings (Varengians), then the Mongols, the Muslim Caliphates, the Poles,then.. really lots of folk, and the Russian Tzars (p.s. - Tzar is just a pronunciation of "Caesar" which was the private family name of a well-known Roman guy who became an Emperor, so it's been used as a claim to fame all over the place, had to say that) AND Ukraine centered on Kiev then fought against the Soviets, was absorbed.. BUT across 1000 years of this history, the fact of 60 years (total - one lifetime) as a soviet state, is not ENORMOUS.. And - as anywhere - there are different people of different ethnicities there today - AND different opinions just inside one family, who do not agree with each other for small or large reasons, are more idealistic or more practical, more dramatic or more slow-and-long-term, and there are different backgrounds, different songs, different memories. You could compare this in some way to the American Civil War (sometimes even father against son, for many economic, political or philosophical reasons)... but to link the Ukraine strongly with today's Russia is only a very small part of it's long history. In 10 years this will ALL be different, and let's hope it goes as smoothly as possible... whichever direction. xx ('scuse me.. also I know I squashed up a lot of stuff and said it badly or inaccurately.. please see what I intend rather than the mess I make of saying it) Czech National Revival (the first) Czech Language Kievan Rus' xx pilgrim
  7. I figured that if you made a square steep (sheer) sided hole in the ground - a terrain feature - you could place a house exactly on top of it, so the house would have a cellar. Access is either by standard stairs down from the ground floor, or by an opening floor hatch and a ladder. No need for light in the cellar. Much more fun if there is NO light there. And no need for wall or floor textures in the cellar - just the terrain feature in rock or bare earth. You only need one or two of these cellar-houses on the map to introduce a new gameplay feature that has great (cool) potential. The house must be located over the 'terrain pit' by hand, with care - but there is no requirement for many of them - as the great problem is to ensure there is no glitch between the house structure walls and the terrain pit, so no players get stuck there. I appreciate it is time-consuming to construct these things, but even two or three houses on the whole map, with access to a dark cellar space must be an interesting game option. For instance -relatively easy to construct would be a cellar of this kind underneath a barn, so that the barn structure extended well out beyond the rim of the "cellar" terrain feature. Would certainly make barns (or factories) into more exciting places. However it would be very cool to have one or two (only) cellars in normal street houses scattered across the city maps.. Just a couple of them. Is this feasable? As far as I can tell from (half-baked) experiments, it can be done, but needs time and WORK to get it right. Am I right? xx

Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

Yes - so it totally missed out on the Habsburgs and the Austro-Hungarian empire AND the Ottomans... that's amazing and unique... you are right, that locates it outside the whole of the Continent of Europe, (unless it was hidden in the middle of Poland or inside the Ottoman Empire itself, [joke] - that would have been mentioned, right?). I can accept we're talking about a fictional planet here. If we ignore most of the regional history East of the Black Sea we could say 'Georgia' ... for instance.. as you suggest (check it out? - Wikipedia again) but .. nah .. or .. maybe.. or ... whatever... but this is like any fiction.. ya know... I recently heard the author saying Game of Thrones was based on Britain and the Wars of the Roses .. funny, I was born right there, but my impressions of that region and it's history are not like his fiction at all.. maybe it's changed a lot ? But (to be fair) - we still really do have Lancashire and Yorkshire, and Scotland is still to the North, so I guess there are some important similarities worth arguing about. Maybe somebody could claim that apart from some slight artistic licence with the climate, that whole series is Totally Real... my own opinion is that none of this stuff ever existed in any way, anywhere, at any time, .. If anyone ever wants to write a coherent back story they are going to have to start from SCRATCH (new continent?), and to make anything that hangs together even a little bit they will have their work REALLY cut out. But at least we're all cool about the zombies, right?

Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

OK I see you didn't check Google Earth, or even the Wikipedia starter site, as I suggested.. I'm cool with that. You could learn some stuff that we need to know, that has changed the western world, and check out some of the shit that is going down Most importantly, know WHY One of the faint benefits of DayZ is it gives people who might get interested an opening to understand a little bit more about where we live and how it got this way. Not a lot, but it's there.. The number of people I've heard on these forums who think Romania, the Ukraine and (probably) Somalia are all the same place.. some shit place you see on TV, see it on youtube, this depresses me. Santayana (famous guy, poet, philosopher) said: "Those who do not know their history are condemned to repeat it" So no prob. DayZ is a nice game . Anyone ever heard that Lord of the Rings was "based" on a combination of the Second World War, the bombing of Dresden, and the Mongle invasions of Hungary and Poland in the 13th century.? I guess that makes it less fictional. as i said above "... but .... what the hell..." Do what you like friend, have your tits as hot or as cold as you want them, no problem, think what you want to think, it's your planet. Thanks for your comments people - I DO understand them.. you're talking about real places here, and many of you live in them, and I played the Mod on RO1 for a long time (Romania,ya know it?) with plenty of interesting Romanian dudes, some cool Ukranian bandits and a trio of Russians. So I already had this conversation about "what people think about the <<ex soviet union>>" as though its 'a place', as though it's an item on CNN.. had this conversation a LONG time ago. Sorry about the RANT .. this IS your planet, after all, you don't have to think or know anything much about it if ya don't want to. It's never going to change your life, right? Saying "the topography is the same" is like saying the Lake district is what England is like, or the Nevada Desert is what the USA is like. Check back and you can find one location the artists went to (what particular area) to get their photos and ideas for country and house models. But that's not what the CR looks like. (.. etc..) ps Most of the town buildings "look like" standard town streets in Belgium, but then Belgium and Bohemia had the same rulers and the same architects, shared culture and arts, and they built the same stuff. Does that fit in with the back story? xx pilgrim No problem Whyhero123, I didn't mean to pick you out as a bad person. I apologise. (and to the other contributers above - 'scuse me). A French journalist asked Mao if communism had changed Europe, and Mao said "It's too early to tell". That about sums it up.

Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

All it takes is a 2 minute google Earth search to learn how wrong you are - you get 1 point for FICTIONAL (for fuck's sake) The Czech republic is NOT ON A SEA ( just for instance ) It does NOT have a coastline (got it ? found it ?). While you're spending your 2 minutes on Google Earth, you'll notice a few other MAJOR DIFFERENCES like the one I just mentioned. Check out the RIVERS,see if you've heard of any of them.. check out the TOWNS... and if you want to spend a whole 15 mins, start with Wikipedia and CR's own websites and take a look at INDUSTRY, AGRICULTURE, ECONOMY, LIVING STANDARDS, NATO MEMBERSHIP, INFRASTRUCTURE, (like roads,ya know), MEMBERSHIP of THE EU, the PORTS (hey, there aren't any SEA ports, so how come there ARE major ports - hey, PRAGUE and Moldauhafen HAMBURG (don't tell me Hamburg isn't in the CR I already know, but the CR has a PORT there). Have a closer look at the GEOGRAPHY and TOPOGRAPHY. Generally have fun and take a little more than 2 minutes before you decide you know about the Czech Republic or about what DayZ is "based on" apart from fiction (you think fiction "comes from" somewhere?). At least I guess you know where DayZ "comes from?" As for the Government being based on the "post-soviet republic".. you got me there, I haven't met any Chernarus government reps yet in the game, but I don't expect them to be anything like anything I've seen in the news or heard of since 1989 (guess you know why I chose that year?). Calling the CR elected govt. a "post soviet republic" as though this makes any useful particular sense, is a VERY ODD view of history, especially in this case. At least, I hope you don't mean post-soviet as in 'post-soviet Russia'. That would make me cry! The CR Army has NATO contingents in Afghanistan (and Kosovo), does that have anything to do with it? BUT more importantly, as we ALL know (here in europe at least) - it would be CRAZY (suicidal?) for any company to deliberately locate a fictional fighting/survival game of this kind in any place that identifiably RESEMBLED a real country. And it would be MADNESS for them to claim that this fictional place was in any sense "really" about that country IN ANY WAY. You probably don't realize how many people in the CR play DayZ ? Maybe (I hope, because I feel bad for being sharp with you) it's just that you're still thinking in those old-old (easy to think) cold war terms and you still have some 1950s idea that 'Eastern European' countries are far away and full of poor bad people (zombies in fact)? Tell Bohemia (the company) about that, they might not be so sure. but as you know where the country is I guess you can name 3 of the 4 (post-soviet??) countries bordering the CR? It's time for people to catch up on history before it kicks us in the teeth. So when I say: NOT Russia NOT Ukraine dont tell me I'm somehow "all right and all wrong" (hey - the car is a Scoda, ok?) - and CEITEC (you may notice in there.. and OTHER stuff, and ... etc.. (and I'm going to play now, see ya later) ps - The Czech Republic is one of the top 10 countries worldwide with the fastest average internet speed,.. but .. what the hell .. xx pilgrim [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Republic - ok, point out the similarities again ?]

No. NOT Russia. NOT Ukraine. The Ukrainian flag is easy to confuse with military grade or unit patches (for instance). It's not a complicated flag:

Good advice Ming the Merciless Sir, General Zod - I took another half as you advised, but due to a mistranslation (see the link in my last post) where "1/2" was mistakenly reported as "one or two" In fact I took 2 ... and 1/2 later (when they explained the error) Neither General Zod nor Ming the Merciless,as far as I know, were emotionally close to Krypton, even before it exploded (was that you?) so I expect you're not fluent. you DID claim to be a Kryptonian, though. I saw through your disguise, as always. But I heard from a reliable chief torturer on one of our ships, that it was Zod's own suggestion that convinced Ming to flood the earth with Boys Bands in his first attempt to destroy human civilization. Thanks be to Crom that the Garage Bands managed to fight them off... Mercifully that's all in the past and -some of us- survived .. but what will happen next... ???? ???? - who can ever forget: " Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men ? - ZOD Knows.. Where the F#%@ am I?

You missed out the 'ALL' option - as Boneboys points out plus the other suggestions made in the thread, these are good suggestions.. The only one I don't do is number 2, When I'm outside the game I look at the online DaYZ map and think about what I could try tomorrow (kind of like reading this forum, it's an extra DayZ activity, but it's not inside the game).. I dont do that in the game. I have a general memory of the map and if I get it wrong then that's my problem (like IRL ?) I'm supposed to know the ground, the objectives, the dangers.. I'm not searching for OUTSIDE help..And the in-game maps don't help me a great deal except for placenames, but just that CAN be very helpful..I'll pick one up, look at it somewhere quiet, and then drop it again... because even after all this time, a placename roadsign can confuse you.. where the hell IS that ? But in FACT When you're on the ground (in the middle of HERE and NOW) you don't need a map, you need to see where the trees are, where you must cross open ground, which way the roads are heading, the steepnes and direction of the valley, where there is water, you NEED situational awareness, but it's all written there on the real ground you can SEE around you.. if you're not sure about what is over the next hill, you cross the hill and check what's on the other side.. you watch the treeline when you cross open ground, you keep an eye on that village, you listen (turn the damn music off), you look over your shoulder a LOT.. For "navigating" you want all these techniques you mention in the poll.. you combine them ..because, for instance, it's a lot easier to get lost or turned around when there's no sunlight (eg in the rain) and now with exposure death possible, that's exactly when you don't want to make direction mistakes.. so you use ALL the techniques. Mainly if you're navigating by 'survival techniques' you must develop a sense of how much off-course you are, so if you are heading East, make sure you're not "more or less" heading east.. take your deviations into account (to check a house, to fill a canteen, to stay inside a treeline) .. if you're going East buty in fact you"re averaging 12-15° off course, you won't easily get to where you want to be. So a compass can make life easier, you don't NEED one but why stress yourself? So pick it up if you find one, and maybe save yourself on a freezing-rain day when those distinctive hills are all whited-out. I dont use "other device" maps .. I think that's silly.. In the game I simply use EVERYTHING I can. But - - - who wouldn't ??
  17. Two points - First: I didn't say "bunch of stuff, total misunderstanding, rant dripping with sarcasm, blah blah blah..." that must have been someone else. Second point, I don't have a "pretty little noodle" no one has ever been so wrong on this forum. You must be talking about someone else. Is it possible you read the wrong post ? However, I'm almost ready to ask what you mean by ""IT'S JUST A GAME IF THEY WANTED TO SURVIVE THEY WOULDN'T PLAY, GOD." but... I'll give that a miss. I've tried ... but it's too complicated for me. It was fun to read though. Is there a meaning to the whole post ? Or is it an auto-generated text sent to the wrong person for a glitched reason? Did you write any of the reply-software? On the other hand, I LIKE "I've never died facing away from an enemy." Myself, I've died facing every-which-way, and sometimes I don't KNOW where the enemy was, or even if it was a glitch. But you always die facing the bad guy. That's heroic! - I guess they have faster reactions than you ? But it's heroic anyway. I do think you have misunderstood my opinion somehow - perhaps you just did read the wrong post ? To make everything clear - Server hopping at military areas is a bad IDEA - ok?
  18. I can't fault what you say Odin, I agree with you - the advantge of different characters on different shards - and I too have had some fun times on private servers.. also some "aweful' fun times... style of "the players from hell" times too. Spent a night invited to a group on the Mod where everyone spoke on broadcast channel - they all had big adult male voices, talked about work and told bad jokes AND you could HEAR the wife cooking and shouting in the kitchen, sometimes trying to shout across her husband to some other wife of someone else in the game, and the kids in each house arguing and throwing the cat around, all of the players the same << shut your mouth you little runt, when's the meal ready for shit's sake, whats the matter now, leave the cat alone, you know what I told my dumb boss at work today? ..>> everyone doing this all evening, to say nothing of the crap over-volume mike sound, the feedback and scratching, banging, nose cleaning and swearing. YES OK - this was their private skype/bar where they relaxed. As far as "the game" itself - no one was 'playing', and I couldn't hear a zombie a yard away because of channel talk.. But this is their server, and that's what they do in the evening. OK...I guess they were good enough people - they invited me - but they really had their pants unzipped and shirts unbuttoned ALL the time. Was just not my style. Now I laugh about it. Another server, the boss had THE helicopter - there was a central group of 5 or 8 of his friends plus some others. He was the BOSS, that was clear. That was good fun for quite a while, the boss did rescue missions.. but it was HIS helicopter and one day someone stole it (I think, or flew it over the sea and bailed out?).. I dont know what happened, then for a day everyone killed everyone else and insulted each other (real shouting insults) and the day after, the guy closed down his server. It was shut forever and gone. One other thing that happens even on an 'open-ish' server where the admins dont mind strangers coming in, is the people who have played together for a while do a witch hunt on any strangers who turn up. That can be interesting.. different way of enforcing 'privacy' as role-play in the post-apocalyptic game style. We had some serious fights for a month or two with a group of "strangers" who set up a hidden base, until eventually we tracked it down and wasted everything, then they gave up. So - interesting memories. I played a lot on a Romanian server with always the same people on it, who mainly ended up challenging each other to pistol duels in the main street at Cherno, and often had discussions about how to get more people to join, but never did.. And another habitual server where everyone was extremely helpful, never a shot fired in anger, if you wanted something someone would drive down to give it to you - if they wanted it you would help them find it. Peaceful and polite folk, we had some interesting talks.. One of those guys, I came across his camp, he had 30 tents full of gear he'd collected and a line of vehicles - all legal not hacked, just... collected.. When the maphacks got going towards the end of the Mod, the admins put a max ping of 50 on that server to stop strangers from coming in (server was in Saudi Arabia), and with my best late-night ping, at that distance, of 80+ I never saw any of them again. But it's true, over the months I was there, I made some real friends. Now (because of the above) .. I can be polite in Arabic.. I can say "I am not a bandit, I am friendly" in Russian ... and I know enough standard short phrases in Romanian to usually understand the subject of the conversation (which can be useful). But this comes - really - from me being a loner and going out on the servers to see what players are like. If it seems a good server I put it on the shortlist and go back there. I have 3 that are my regular places, but then some evenings I like to go around the world, try to see what is happening.. see if I can really log in to that Tokyo hardcore server and find out what they are like (173.199.82.107) - but from here that is one far away server. But at the moment I need a second list - not just a 'Favorites" list but also a "Kicks, Closed Clan, Friends Only, Private Members, Psycho Admin, This is MY server, No Foreign Languages, and Half-Hour Loot Farms" list, for all the places you are kicked from inside 30 seconds after you land, or the server restarts 3 times in a row, or it only opens for one or two hours until the admin gears up, then shuts down for the rest of the day.. etc..but I'd like a list mainly for the kicks. There are so many of these I forget which they are. ...often the name doesn't help - some of them have names like "Friendly Public Server, Enjoy, Open to All" .. and that pisses me off more than the "We Kick and Reset, Stay Away" servers. (we'll see how it goes, I guess) Anyway - I take your point and it makes sense. Thanx. xx pilgrim

0 FPS something wrong with DayZ Help!

Check the forums there is a LOT of discussion.. you are not the first to ask a question like this.. you are maybe the 1743d but not the first you'll get a lot more info than just heading a post and waiting around for someone to explain things to you. The ones that like to explain and provide solutions have already done this 1743 times... and some others who like to argue about those helpful comments and hints, have done so around 5229 times (it's not an exact count, I didnt check them all because Ive already READ a million discussions on FPS But anyway, seeing as you're here waiting.. You said that word "laptop" That's a bad word, unless you want to spend a lot of money on this month's ace Gaming achine.. but then why would you buy a laptop, you an international businessman who needs to play in PanAm executive class (or on the subway or something?) Bet you connect to the internet by wifi too ? Theres a whole lot of crapness dumped on your FPS right from the start. BUT - check around - try a FORUM search on .. something .. something exciting like "FPS" you might come up with more solutions and arguments and alternatives than you can read in a day, even on an executive laptop ps - don't get mad a my post, I play on a 10 year old Dual Core, but I've done a few things to it... it plays ok by DayZ standards... read up about those too.. plenty of people play fine on worse gear than yours, others don't. xx pilgrim
  20. You misunderstand - private shards cut down 100% on server hopping, because your tune only has his equipment on THAT server. If he turns up on any other server he's bare assed naked. I HOPE you got that straight. You understand. You cant take any gear to any other server from your shard. And no one will hop to your server because they CANT take stuff away from it. The only reason they will come there will be to play, but even if they wanted to fight they'd have to find the gear first (because they arrive on the beach) and you'll kick them long before that (right? private shard?). Private shard servers are great if you want to shoot the same people over and over and over and over again, hang with the same few folk and and use the game as a little Twitter between you and your 12 friends, sit around the campfire every night with the same folk and .. well.. just ... hang out with the same folk, and then, hot damn, hang out with the same folk some more..... 'Server loyalty' means you have a total player membership of maybe 20-30 people (ok if that's what you're about) .. the public hive means you have a total player membership of - how many million was that again? - But I guess if you don't want to MEET any new strange players, then go for it.. And make sure you obey the private server rules, of course, or you'll be butt naked on some strangers beach again. Maybe it's not that bad (I'm trying to be nice), it just seems that way to me, but in any case - Enjoy No server hopping (not even for YOU, dude) no strangers, no change, same people, the boss, his sidekicks, the enforced rules of etiquette and behaviour..(maybe a little pay to play?).. and turn your back on 2 million players because some of them are "not nice people".. cool if that's what you're looking for. But.. euh.. why ? There are plenty of private servers around now.; go down the list one night, log in to a few, see how long you stay before you're kicked... (but THOSE admins CAN - right now - switch servers when they want and fight or loot anywhere, which you wont be able to do on your private shard). And I think it will mainly STAY that way when people understand they can loot farm their own server, kick who they like, and hop to everyone elses (as quite a few do NOW) but if they PAY EXTRA, then they wont be able to do any of those things any more. So what do you figure is going to happen? xx This is the way I see it.
