I have no idea what this sentence means. For all the flak the rest of the world gives America for being fat and stupid, at least I can write in my Mother tongue. Also, the Victorian Era was 1837-1901. Want to know what the weapon that actually got the most kills on the battlefield? Artillery ; a big fucking gun. Even the bayonet was falling out of favor, with the development of rifles capable of long-range, accurate fire. Even cavalry was regulated to be essentially dragoons, using their carbines instead of sabers often as of not.

1) They didn't use carpenter's hammers during the middle ages because...they didn't have carpenter's hammers? They had perfectly serviceable war hammers instead. 2) And hammers and maces were widely used, by the upper class to kill other members of the upper class (maces/ warhammers, poleaxes), by members of the lower class to kill members of the upper class (sledges, mauls, look at the Battle of Agincourt and the English Longbowmen), by EVERYONE. They were cheap, effective, and reliable. Chances are you used some sort of club/hammer as a backup, after your spear/missile weapon. 3) Never throw your spear. You are not a trained javelin-ist? (Is that the right word?) You will miss, probably damage the spearhead, and look like a goddamned idiot. Especially since you a lugging about a katana. Seriously, I can't get that mental image out of my head.
-
Have you ever held a carpenters hammer? Literally ounces in weight. OUNCES. I can swing that thing before you can blink, and I don't need to wind it up/ telegraph my movements like you would with a goddamned katana. Seriously, I vary between laughing at your foolishness and crying at your stupidity. Never breed, please.
-
Absolutely 100% incorrect. Do you want to know what was the most common weapon most widely used (worldwide, not just in Europe) on the ancient battlefield (Classical all the way to the 1600's)? The goddamned spear. EVERYONE used a spear, even the knights/knightly equivalent. The sword was the sidearm. And, from roughly the 1400s onward, the sword wasn't even used in combat! Want to hazard a guess as to what was? A FUCKING HAMMER/MACE Seriously, just take a look: Romans- Hasta/Pilum Thrusting spear/javelin Vikings: Spears everywhere in this bitch, before swords and axes Every medieval army: again, spears. Like a giant spiky wall of death Japan: Ashigaro levies? spears EVERYWHERE: GODDAMN SPEARS You know what? I want a spear in Day Z. 7 foot long shaft, with a 1 foot blade. I would be indestructible.

No, a katana would be effing useless in hand to hand. Too brittle, requires sharpening, and where would you find one in Chernarus, a post-Soviet state? Jesus H Christ. To be entirely honest, the best weapon for CQC would have to be a regular carpenters hammer. Fully capable of crushing the skull with a single short swing, and even if you miss the head, whatever you hit, you WILL break. Light enough to be swung all day. Plenty of uses outside of combat. No edges to sharpen, plus, they are absolutely everywhere. In essence, you swing at me with katana, I backstep, then step in as you struggle with the follow-through. I then proceed to lay one upside your head, laying you on the ground. I could finish you off then and there, or leave you as a living roadblock for the zeds following behind me. yeah, probably that. Enjoy being zed food.

Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game
Whyherro123 replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
No, arrows are most decidedly not easier than bullets to make. Get that out of your head right now. Bullets are so much easier to make than arrows, it isn't even funny. -
Personal feelings of military weapons (and future weapons) in this game
Whyherro123 replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, part of the reason armies started to switch from bows to firearms was the amount of work required to make an effective war-bow. The other aspect was the training. It takes a lifetime of training for an archer to be effective in combat. It takes a couple of weeks for a musketman to be combat effective, plus he could carry far more ammunition on his person. Plus, I think people on this forum overestimate just how powerful a bow would be. Yes, a bow can easily kill you, but you have to be strong enough to draw it back first. A musket can kill just as easily ( a .75 lead ball can put a 6 - 8 in hole in your insides), while only requiring you to manually work a ramrod, a task that is trivial. Both weapons are rendered ineffective by inclement weather, though a musket would be better, because you can keep your powder dry if you are careful (flintlocks have a pan cover, which can keep out some water, so long as you dont go swimming with the damn thing) Bows have the advantages of silent shooting, light weight, and fast reloading, while muskets have the advantages of pure power, range (believe me or not, you can hit a target 50m away with a musket reliably, so long as you properly brace and use good loads), and ease of use. All in all, I'd rather have a blackpowder musket over a bow. -
Is there anything being planned that incentivizes not shooting on sight?
Whyherro123 replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Exactly. I hate it when people state that they KOS in order to "be realistic, because that is what will happen in a zombie apocalypse". Not really, for the exact reasons stated above. Long term survival IS is group survival in the real world. This is a game, where there is no real struggle, so people KOS for kicks. In real life, they would be dangling from a tree very, very shortly after starting fucking about with people. Human beings desire stability, socialization, and most importantly, safety. All of these can be satisfied by being in a group. -

Whyherro123 replied to Demoth's topic in General Discussion
The devs are planning on adding craftable bows? Ugh. I don't think they quite understand just how difficult it is to make a serviceable bow and arrows. In medieval Britain, it was an art, done by certified practitioners. You don't just take a stick and attach some string, it takes a lot of effort to make a bow...well, a bow and arrows that will last and shoot with accuracy and power. -

Give me a god-damn black powder musket, and I will mess up your day...so long as you are within 75-150 meters : P In all seriousness, black powder is a substance that, with a little chemistry know-how, can be made in your basement with chemicals found readily in the home, including your own piss, if you so choose. The ease of making the propellant, along with the actual bullets (which can be made of melted down tire weights), makes a black powder firearm one of the most efficient long-term survival firearms. Granted, smoke gets everywhere, you only get one shot, reloading takes a while, and weapon maintenance is abso-fucking-lutely 1001% king, but it is still very useful, both for hunting (ball for big game, shot for small) and for defending yourself. Plus, I don't know what it is like in Europe, but in almost every state in the US, black powder firearms are next to unregulated, even in States that are not firearm-friendly (counter to stereotypes, not all of the US has a rifle-shaped erection : P) Case in point, in Massachusetts, where there is a local saying ,"fun is outlawed in Taxachusetts", you just have to be 18 in order to purchase a "primitive firearm", and have an FID in order to buy propellant ( I just make my own) -
With Rain Do You Think Hospitals Will Be Even More Dangerous Now?
Whyherro123 replied to Deathlove's topic in General Discussion
While the rain won't give you a disease directly, I would expect there to be some sort of hypothermia- effect implemented as a result of the rain and such. This, based on the apparent season ( early-mid autumn would be my guess) could lead to a lot of player fatalities, as hypothermia is a killer, even in the summer (personal experience; I got it in late July, where it is 90 degrees Fahrenheit in southern New England during the day. I was about in the rain in BDUs for only a half an hour. I had to go to the hospital.) -

Whyherro123 replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Don't get me wrong, I am most decidedly not against PvP in this game. I'd just like a tad more of PvE, in order to give those of us interested in other things than ramming gun barrels into each other's various orifices something to do. To make things short, I feel that survival should be a reason to kill others. I ALSO feel that it should be a very big reason you don't. -
Why? They are just infected people. I guarantee that if I put a bullet into your torso, you'll go down. There is no reason to require headshots, just pump up the numbers/damage.

A console version would kill this game tbh..
Whyherro123 replied to scaramoosh's topic in General Discussion
I own Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for the 360. It was released in 2009, and as of today, IMHO opinion, looks better, runs better, and plays better than Day Z SA. IB4 ALFER, I was just using it as an example of a military sim that worked on console. -

Reading comprehension is your friend. Not understanding/enjoying a certain playstyle =/= telling you not to do it. I never told you to not do what you want. Go rub your e-peen all you want about how you are the "KOS MASTAH". I'll just be judging you, and the rest of your asshole brethren. -

Whyherro123 replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Why? Why MUST you be such an unmitigated, unempathetic assnugget that enjoys ruining the play for other people? I must have just been raised the right way, because finding joy in other people's suffering is, well, disgusting to me. IRL, do you stop to help people pulled over on the side of the road? Hold the door open for someone, help an elderly person across the street? Or do you point and scream "SUCKS TO BE YOU, ASSHOLE!" because, to be entirely serious, that is the vibe I am starting to get from certain supporters of the KOS playstyle. Pure, unmitigated, assfuckery -

Haha, oh man. My thoughts exactly. What "complex controls" are you talking about? We've got movement, aiming, inventory, and action commands. The only issue I could see with console controllers is the "lean about corners" mechanic, which I am sure could be translated to a shoulder bumper or whatnot. So, you'll lose your precious macros. Oh, the humanity! -
What to expect from the Ruger 10/22
Whyherro123 replied to JalapaJuiceJerry's topic in General Discussion
Give me a Ruger .22LR and a revolver chambered for .22LR, and I will be in survivalist heaven. -
IRL, I wear surplus BDU's in the woods for many reasons 1) They keep me out of sight. Not being able to hide when you have to means you are a much "bigger" target. The human eye is naturally attracted to both contrasting color and patterns. BDUc cover both. When I want to be seen, I take off the jacket, or put on one of the multiple bandanas I carry. 2) Metric fuckton of pockets. I can carry roughly 3 days worth of supplies in the pockets of my BDU jacket and pants. A weeks worth if I include the MOLLE pouches on my belt. Ease of logistics = better 3) Tough. Getting my BDU's from an aftermarket company, they are made from a very tough fabric, resistant to ripping, and actually, rather warm and water-resistant, so long as I don't go swimming. In a situation like Day Z, I am assuming that the same rationale would apply. Don't judge all of us camo bush-wookies by the actions of the Balota Ass-Bandits!

My character has been alive for 4 days now, and I have roughly 80 rounds of Mosin ammunition, partly found laying about and partly taken off of wanna-be LEET SNIPAHS that I countersnipe when they miss me by 15 feet. I enjoy having "insurance", if you will. If there was the option of making stashes, I would bury roughly 2/3 of that in a heartbeat.

I wear a lot of green to blend in with the woodlands. Of course, I teach wilderness survival and often have to sneak through the woods, so I get this gut instinct telling me to be out of sight in the woods. If I wear bright, garish colors, I actually feel rather paranoid. This translates over into my "civilian" wardrobe, which is made up of khaki, green, brown and blue. I feel that if you are trying to draw attention to yourself, you must be either 1) ignorant or 2) trying to make yourself a target. By wearing colors that blend in, a lot of people may think I am a bandit, trying to get the drop on you. I am actually rather nice in-game, trying to make contact before getting all stabby. I've only ever killed one person before attempting communication, when he was deliberately going around shooting at everyone he saw moving. I had to eliminate the threat.

Well, to compare Day Z to real life, even the biggest city in Chernarus, Cherno, is extremely small compared to even a relatively small city where I am from. New Bedford is only the 6th largest city in the State of Massachusetts (with 90,000 people), and it would take about 3 hours to walk the length and breadth of the city. Compared to that, Cherno is very small, minuscule even. There are rural towns in my state that have larger urbanized areas than Electro. Plus, it only takes me about an hour/ hour and a half to jog from the south coast of the map to the north border. It would only take a few minutes to drive that distance. Granted, the rural town next to New Bedford, Dartmouth, has about 3-4 different firestations, so I don't understand why there is only 3 or 4 across the entire map.

If you like dying, come to BEREZINO.
Whyherro123 replied to Johnny Depth's topic in General Discussion
By and large, the rest of the US is waiting for the day when California splits off from the rest of the continent. They have a tendency to drag our name through the mud with a rather disconcerting frequency... -
I live in the US, so I'd take an M4 over another weapon. Lightweight, little recoil, and the ammunition would be absolutely everywhere. The other members of my group could be long-range combatants. From what I have heard from my friends in the military (deployed to Afghanistan, so I'd like to believe they have some idea of what their weapon is capable of), the M4 carbine is an accurate, solid rifle that is dependable so long as you clean it properly. They (I have no idea how they figured it out, but I'm assuming they had some familiarization with tribal weaponry) also stated that the AK is not some supermagical death machine that never has to be cleaned. They still had to clean it, it just doesn't have the tight tolerances like the M4.
