You aren't going to "fix" anything, all you are going to do is immobilize the broken limb, and it will take about 6 weeks or so to fully heal, with physical therapy needed after to ensure proper limb function. All morphine is going to do is take the pain away and make you really, really stoned. IRL, if you break a limb, especially a leg, in a survival situation, you are pretty much fucked unless you have friends that are also trained doctors. The limb has to be immobilized, then put under traction (which is different from a splint, and can kill you if done wrong). You then get to hang around for a while, being essentially a waste of space and a food dump for your team, until the bone heals enough to walk on it. I know you should be prepared for everything is a WS situation, but I pretty much don't even figure broken limbs into my plan, or my kit. Broken arms I can deal with, with a modicum of effort (the injury also doesn't completely debilitate the subject; they can still do work about the camp) I just remember a little saying, and I haven't broken my legs yet, even in some pretty sketchy situations "Whatever you can step on, you should step over. Whatever you can step over, you should step around" Also, don't walk on sketchy surface; talus, high rocks, etc.

What purpose do you have for running around in the rain? In real life, when it starts to rain and I am camping, I go inside my shelter and relax for a couple of hours. In game, you could use the time to cook, perform weapon/gear maintenance, or just...relax and rest, both of which are critical in a real survival situation. I don't really understand WHY people would want to move about in inclement weather. Waste of energy in my opinion.

Why The Distinction Between Civilian/Military Weapons Is Bad, And You Should Feel Bad
Whyherro123 replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I just want a Throne-damned Lasgun. 60 shots per power pack (which can be recharged using electricity, solar energy, or fore), adjustable fire modes, lightweight, and effective. "The AK-47 of the 41st Millenium. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively, must have a more effective logistical supply than every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitutes" -
Generally, the warmer food is, the easier it is to digest. On the other hand, the "raw-er" food is, the more nutrients it will have. Food loses some nutrition when it gets cooked. Ideally, in a survival situation, you only want to cook your food enough to ensure it is safe to eat (think meat cooked rare, vegetables warmed up), and boil literally EVERYTHING, then drink the resulting broth.

Most scenic spot in Chernarus plus?
Whyherro123 replied to amazingmazer's topic in General Discussion
That actually looks like the Berkshires, in my home region of New England. That, coupled with the foliage coloration, make me "homesick" for autumn. I want to take a hike to the top of a mountain, look over at the valley below, pull out my pipe and tobacco, and just...look. -
Just saying, you would get a FAR greater return of "benefit" / work put in if you use whole logs in construction vs.trying to cut logs down into boards.....although rough cut "barn boards" are possible if you have a large enough chainsaw
-
It takes a LOT of work to make boards from raw lumber. And why would you waste your time making plywood? You would have to "shred" the lumber, mix it with a glue, then set in a mod to form. You'd probably be better off making a log cabin.

Would You Balance The M4 and How / Bow and Arrow Discussion?
Whyherro123 replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
I used birch because it grows everywhere by my house, and I am not going to drop $100+ on a bow that I, for all intents and purposes, am just going to play around with. The birch has the D-shaped cross-section, is 5 feet long, and shoots arrows well enough for the purposes I use it for. It looks like a longbow, so I call it a longbow. : P -
Would You Balance The M4 and How / Bow and Arrow Discussion?
Whyherro123 replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, pretty much. I can aim my bow into the sky and launch an arrow across half a mile of water in my backyard (exaggerating for effect). Will I hit anything at that distance? (Besides water?) Hell no. My effective range with a compound bow, with all the modern bells and whistles (like sights, counterbalances, and recoil absorbers) is about 30 meters, 40 on a good day with no wind. Using an "older" recurve bow, my effective range is shorter, probably much shorter. I wouldn't trust myself to make a kill-shot on an animal at that distance, either. -
Would You Balance The M4 and How / Bow and Arrow Discussion?
Whyherro123 replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
I just felt the need to correct a few things: 1) Yes, it has promise as a weapon, so long as the weapon is very specialized, and is realistically difficult to use. No modern compound bows here! It should have a range of 40-50 meters, tops! 2) It depends, really. I own a hunting broadhead that has razorblades that can open up to 2-3 inches wide. If I tag you with it, you will definitely feel it. Plus, by the virtue of it remaining in the body, should make things all sorts of unpleasant. 3) Definitely. I agree. I made a Welsh-style longbow (self style) out of birch. It took me over a year to find the right branch, to dry it out, to carve/sand it down, and get it all balanced. -
Is anyone tired of this game because of KOS?
Whyherro123 replied to gotr1ght's topic in General Discussion
Exactly, it isn't realistic, and it wouldn't happen in real life, at least not to this scale. So, if the devs want this game to be at least semi-realistic, there should be elements introduced to make combat-based pvp much less prevalent, and make competition-based pvp more prevalent (competition for food, water, space, etc) However, people are going to reply with, and they are correct in this case, that Day Z is a game. That, to them, lets them do whatever they want. Again, technically, they are correct. However, I feel that mindless killing will only hurt this game in the long run, as it could drive away both new players and veterans, who might get tired of the lack of interaction besides "point and shoot). That is a bad thing, in my book -
So, I was just killed by a serverhopper at the Balota Airfield. To be honest, I am a little aggravated. It was a 11:40-ish server, with only one other person on it. So, unless they randomly found me, it must have been a serverhopper. I was on the second floor of the office building at the airfield. The damn place was already looted, probably by another hopper, but I wanted to see if they missed anything under the desks. I cleared every inch of that damn building, including the stupid wall-glitching spot. Now, what I don't know is how he managed to spawn in behind me. He had a fireaxe in hand, so I suppose he didn't make the ammo noise, because I didn't hear anything. I searched for another topic similar to this one, but I couldn't find any, so before "SAERCH BAR NUB", go choke on a shlong, please. Anybody have any other experiences with those scum-sucking bastards?

Remove all long firearms = best kill on sight deterrent.
Whyherro123 replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Interesting, but futile. -
No, " a Geared player getting filled full of 5.56mm when all he has is a Mosin and a holstered Magnum." Not much I could do at that range except rush him with an axe. Obviously, I lost.
-
The Jailhouse. I am 99% certain he hopped in, because I cleared the area around the building first, and all of the rooms (including the glitch spot), all of which took me less than 3 minutes. I walked into the top floor room, saw it was empty, crouch-walked out, and came face to face with a guy in full mil-spec, standing in the middle of that little landing. He had an axe in hand, so he didn't make the glitched ammo sound when he logged in. I definitely didn't hear him come up the stairs, as I have good headphones and heard nothing.

The Operator's Mark! Slenderman can be found at Green Mountain!

Yeah, i've subjected myself to a 3 week stay in the Maine woods, called the 100 Mile Wilderness, as a personal character-building exercise. I hope I never have to do that for real, because that was literally the hardest thing I've ever done. I am pretty sure I went insane for a few days, because I lost track of a couple of days in the middle of the expedition, and I can't recall exactly what happened....

It is the function inherent with the design that makes knives less effective at chopping tasks. For the same energy expenditure, you could use a hatchet and get 5X the work out of it. Plus, unless you are trained in knife CQC, which heavily involves grappling, you aren't going to win any knife fights. Use a hammer or a club instead.
-
Back on topic: How many people on this board have actual experience in wilderness survival/bushcraft? That is, spent more than 2 weeks in the woods, living out of your pack and off of what you can find. I am discounting camping and backpacking, as you depend on an outside source for food and gear resupply. It isn't as easy as many apparently think it is.

I have had this bad boy for seven years now, and have done a lot of things to it. Hasn't broken on me yet. Also, you just made me cry. Never NEVER EVER chop wood with a knife. The reason knives break is because people use them for things they were not made to do. A knife is made to cut, an axe is made to chop. You "can" split wood using a knife, but only in a prescribed fashion, and very carefully. TL:DR You need to cut/stab something? Use a knife. Need to chop/split/smash something? Use an axe/hatchet. I HATE the willful, ignorant misuse of a tool.

Sorry, I guess I quoted myself. That was aimed at DarkwaveDomina....
-
Yeah, I don't think people understand just what a total collapse of society implies exactly. Wilderness survival, both long and short term, sucks massive donkey cock. There is a reason we banded into communities and developed modern technology...

You can get a much better knife, from an accredited company, for $60 - $100. Just buy a KABAR. Same steel, half the weight ( in knives, a high weight suggests that it is a POS, due to ornamentation hiding obvious faults), full tang with a sold buttcap, Kraton non-slip handle, and MOLLE-compatible sheath. Plus, I tend to not trust anything labelled SHESHUL OPS. Tacticool is bad in my book.

If 3PP isn't at least attempting to emulate peripheral vision, then 1PP is like playing with blinkers and a neckbrace on. In real life, you have an estimated 180 degrees of vision, where you can see clearly. In Day Z, it looks like you have 75-90 at best.

Probably just fucked-up text, or recognition. I hope that is all it is, because there is a SERIOUS difference in water quality when comparing wells vs surface ponds...... Source: Drinking water treatment plant operator
