Yeah, pretty much. A firearm, especially an assault rifle, should be a rare, awesome find. New firearms and ammunition aren't being produced, why would they be lying about everywhere? Of course, this ties into my hopes for the game. Let the players reindustrialize, building factories to produce that ammo and those weapons again, rather than finding them lying about in a random building.
-
Too bad, so sad, IMHO. There should be other avenues of gameplay, other than "ALL PVP, ALL THE TIME". Limiting ammunition is but one way to open that way up, without unduly limiting PvP. Note, you can still kill a person dead with a spear, it just takes a little more effort and patience than "POINT AND CLICK HEADSHOT"
-
Why? Make ammunition scarce (and tie players to one server, to prevent hopping for more ammo) and I believe players will jump to primitive weapons pretty quickly. Got to defend yourself somehow

Why not a OHK to the upper chest? That is where all of the important bits are in the human body: heart, lungs, large blood vessels, etc. Again, if I hit you in the upper chest with a hammer or axe, or stab you with a knife in that location, you will die. End of story. Either you will have ruptured blood vessels, a rib punching through the heart or lungs, or 7 inches of steel giving you a new breathing hole. I am willing to bet the majority of the non-fatal stabbings a hospital sees are to the abdomen and arms. You can get stabbed in those locations and not die, as there are relatively few blood vessels there to bleed out from. The upper chest, on the other hand, has the Aorta, which is an inch in diameter and under a lot of blood pressure. Smack that around with a hammer, or stab through it (easy, go through the "soft spot" at the base of the windpipe, straight down into the chest cavity. That'll cut straight through the Aorta.) and you will bleed out internally within seconds, a minute at most. My guess is that people don't know how to really knife fight anymore. Holding a knife with the blade pointing "up" out of the top of the fist, only lets you stab the stomach, which generally isn't lethal. Holding a knife the other way, with the blade pointing "down", towards the ground, lets you stab at the upper chest, the throat, and the face much more easily. Which is why my MCMAP manual tells me to hold a knife in that fashion. -
Why does the cross bow do more damage than the m4?
Whyherro123 replied to taco86's topic in General Discussion
True. I am referring to an End-of-the-world scenario, of course, where the necessary infrastructure either wouldn't be there anymore, or be limited to what you have. In my opinion, the benefits a semi-auto rifle give aren't worth the amount of infrastructure it would take to maintain the weapon. OTOH, a "lower technology" firearm is capable of performing effectively even without smokeless powders, brass cartridges, or primers (well, ignition caps, but that is the only thing that I really need, and they can be made) You can make paper cartridges for a shotgun, or blackpowder firearm, and can make blackpowder and shot from common household materials. The only really difficult thing is the ignition caps, and again, those can be made relatively easily (though I wouldn't want to, as the compounds are dangerous, and I can stockpile literally thousands of caps for about $100) It all comes down to what you are preparing for, I guess. You prepare for a level of survival where you have infrastructure (reloading facilities) and supplies (stockpiles of ammunition and spare weapons) handy. I, OTOH, prepare for a far "worse" level of survival, where those things aren't available. Comes from the Scout Motto, " Be Prepared" Not that I am seriously planning for a SHTF scenario. It is just fun and games :P -

To be honest, if I hit you in the head with an axe, you would be effectively dead as well. No qualms about that. In order to improve zombies, make them more resilient. Look at people on PCP/Meth/ -Insert drug of choice here-. They are able to ignore some amount of shock/pain, and therefore, take a licking and keep on ticking. So, yes, IMO, a zombie should be able to be killed in one hit with an axe, or a knife to the chest/throat, but you first have to get there. If you get spotted/heard, be prepared for a fight. Body shots and stabs should definitely kill zombies, don't get me wrong, but let them eat some before they go down, to represent a resilience to shock/pain they get from the "infection". So, if you run through a town and get some zombies following you, you shouldn't be able to turn around and put a Mosin round in each of their guts to make them drop. They should still be able to run up to you and smack you up some before they die. Headshots/ upper torso shots/ hits should be a sure thing, though. If I stab you in the upper chest, you are going to bleed out very very quickly. On that note, I would like to see zombies have the same "bleeding out" effect us players do. So, you whack a zombie in the arm with a hammer, and break the limb. The zombie is now bleeding out internally, and falls unconscious after a few minutes. AND on that note, I've always viewed the "bleeding and blood effects" in-game as more representative of shock rather than actual blood. The healing process and statuses (bleed, bandage, eat/ drink and rest until "healthy" appears, etc) indicate this is the truth. -
I...what? A scope doesn't give you ranges, a range-finder does that. And how does using firearms make you a, uh, "phag"? Last I checked, using the more effective weapon was a mark of pragmatism, not cowardice.

Ehhh, choose what you want, but a semi-auto weapon has too many moving parts for my tastes. It all comes down to logistics; when (yes, when, as it will eventually happen) the internal components break, do you know how to / have the materials to make new ones? With a break-open shotgun and black-powder muzzleloaders, I don't have to, as they have far fewer moving parts (in the case of my muzzle-loading rifle and revolver, about 3 each, one of which is a spring, which can be scavenged from anywhere.) to find/replace/remake. -

Again, how is having a set of skills that improve over time in any way , "Arcade bullshit"? Not having a skill wouldn't prevent you from doing any activity related to the skill, it would just take more time, with a higher chance of failure. You could still attempt the activity, just be prepared to fail, ala real life. I am trained in advanced first aid, but I don't attempt surgery if someone gets hurt that bad. I bring them to the doctors, because they have the necessary training in the skill that I need. Skills wouldn't detract from the game, if anything, they add depth and realism to a game that is currently lacking. Case in point, when I first joined Scouting at the age of 13, I couldn't light a fire to save my life, literally. Now, I am confident in my outdoor skills, to the point where I can successfully light a fire in the goddamn rain. Same goes for my first aid and wilderness survival training. I started out really shitty, now I can confidentially say that my skills are pretty good, to the point that other counselors at my Camp come to me for advice in hiking, camping, wilderness survival, etc. -
There have actually been several studies done examining the effect of the human face on our psychology. All of the studies have effectively discovered that it is our face that "Makes us human", in a sense. Specifically, soldiers in WW2 had a lot of trouble firing on the enemy when they could see their face. When they were covered up, they reported it was much easier to fire on them. So, effectively, if you cover your face, you are often seen as "not/other than human". This is actually the major reason why in films, the protagonists and sympathetic villains have uncovered faces, and why supporting antagonists and protagonists (red-shirts, characters made to die, essentially) often wear masks or full-face helmets. Because we can see the faces of the main characters, we can sympathize with them much easily when they get injured or killed.

But there lies the rub. How do you make character's more valuable? Beards? Haha no. I believe that the only way you can make a character's life more valuable is through the addition of skills, both "born-in" skills, and skills that can be taught. If you spawn in, and you find out you have the "First Aid Skill", where you can apply bandages faster and lessen the chance of infection, your character has value. Therefore, bandit clans could recruit you to take care of their combatants. Or, you could be a "Mechanic", be able to fix vehicles faster or more effectively, etc. Then, there are skills that are learned, and can be taught. Firebuilding could be one, firearm usage could be another. With firearm usage, you improve the handling and accuracy of a weapon, UP TO THE WEAPONS LIMIT. For example, look at the World of Tanks MMO. Your starting crew usually starts at 50% efficiency, meaning your tank performs at 50% of the listed stats (accuracy, reload speed, accuracy, acceleration, etc). As you improve, your crew can get "better" (62%, 75%, etc.), until eventually your crew is at 100% efficiency, meaning they can use the full values of the tank characteristics. So, with an M4, you could start out with horrible rifle sway and range (emulating a lack of experience with the weapon), the progressing through use and experience to the weapon's baseline range and MOA. No sniper-rifle M4's, just the weapon performing as it was designed. Both of these skill-sets can in turn be taught to other players, giving them value and ensuring the skills will survive when the character dies. For example, a character with the "Surgery" talent (allowing them to set broken bones, stitch up wounds, prescribe drugs, etc. Just pulling stuff off the top of my head here. Maybe "Surgeon" should be an 'end-game" talent?) takes another survivor under his wing as an apprentice. By lending the Surgeon assistance, the apprentice slowly gains skill in the "Surgery skill", so that way when the Surgeon shits the bed for whatever reason, the community isn't entirely SOL. Then, bandit groups could raid communities for these "living commodities", they can be traded in between survivor colonies, etc. Anything that adds real value to a character is awesome. Anything that adds fake value, like beards, is not. A side note: why do you think people wouldn't shave? Being dirty all the time is a prime way to invite parasites to live on your body, a big no-no in long-term survival. discuss -
That's......oddly, rather eye-catching.

Ah... Here I was thinking the Engraved 1911 was rather rare, and the pristine version more so. Now I feel like a dumbass  Still, the offer still stands. Looking for varied gear, as I literally just spawned in.
-
I can't believe it. I am trading a Pristine Engraved M1911 for basically a whole set of milspec gear, or, failing that, best offer. This is serious. I died, after not playing for over a month. I spawn in again, just south of Rify. Climbing about on that ship o' wonders, I come across the Holy Grail. So, the Pristine Engraved M1911, for a whole set of milspec gear, M4 w/Magpul included, or best offer. Again, this offer is serious! Scout's Honor! PM me for the details.

Oh, and I want spears. Literally probably the first purpose-made weapon devised by mankind, still used today in the form of the bayonet. Common to every culture throughout history, due to it's effectiveness, versatility, and cheapness. Multi-purpose, able to punch through a skull with little effort. Can be used for hunting, self-defense, and a walking staff. With a spear with a detachable head, you will always have a knife.... I love the humble spear. It, alongside the sling, doesn't get enough love.

Have luck hitting anything besides the terrain at 500m, even (especially) with a longbow. I highly doubt you have the total-body (Yes, total. Try to draw back the string using "just" your arm and shoulder, much less just your arm, and you will most definitely tear something) strength to pull back a 200-fucking-pounds-of-draw-weight Welsh Longbow. The Yeoman archers of medieval England had MALFORMED skeletons, due to the forces exerted on their bones from the high draw weights of the longbows of the period. Plus, duct-taping a scope on a bow won't make you magically hit your target merely because you can see it. You still have to account for the arc of travel for the arrow, and at the angle of elevation you are going to have to loose the arrow at in order to reach out to 500m, all you are going to see in that scope is sky. TL, DR Have fun getting ROFL-stomped by firearm-wielding combatants, stupid LARP-er. There is a multitude of reasons why armies switched over from crossbows and self-bows to firearms, and ease of use was one of them. Bows and other mechanically-propelled weapons have a place in survival. The battlefield ISN'T it.

Nice edit. A Mod tell you to chill out? -
1) A more robust melee system. IRL, I can swing a weapon in a multitude of fashions, with different effects. 2) Weapon maintenance. A "decent" amount of time should be spent maintaining (cleaning, sharpening, etc) your weapons to avoid mishaps (jams, lowered damage, etc). If you don't want to spend the time, go ahead, but suffer from firearm jams, lowered damage, impaired accuracy, lowered melee damage, etc 3) The environment should be a threat. In a survival situation, 3 hours of exposure to the elements can fuck you up. I want hypothermia, heatstroke, etc. No more running about pantsless; I want clothing to count, and for you to have to change clothing when it gets wet. 4) Improved zombies. If they are going to be in the game, they should be effective. Either hordes of "weak" ones , or strong individuals, it doesn't matter. They shouldn't be able to run through buildings, or see/hear me from 500m away. Give them "human" senses. 5)Rebuilding of society. I want agriculture (somehow?) and industry to eventually overtake looting and run n' gun gameplay. Note, there can still be PvP! People would fight over arable land, animal herds, and industrial supplies instead of cans of beans and M4 rifles.

Awesome. Have fun stroking your e-peen, stranger! Anyways, back to the conversation. Yes, online interactions can affect people in real life. While this is an extreme case, examine the teenage girl who committed suicide due to internet trolling a few years back. Being a dick online can, and often does, have an adverse affect on people. Is it always justified? Of course not. But, sometimes, it is.

I don't have any problem with killing in-game. Hell, I've done it before. Just because I am against KOS does not mean I have never got my hands dirty. What I dislike is griefing and trolling. There is a difference between PvP and just plain fucking with someone to make them mad. If they get mad because you take them out in a "fair" fight, then you might have cause to complain about them being soft. But, if they get pissed because they keep getting shot on the beach just after spawning, or they just want to learn the damn game and you wipe them to "teach them a lesson", you just might be the problem here. And, coincidentally, a dick.

Again, I am assuming you are older than me. In that case, go back to school, or, better yet, come over here to the US, because apparently the public schools in the US teach you how to articulate ideas far far better than their Australian counterparts. TL,DR; Use your words, it will make you seem smarter. This is important, because right now you come across as rather brusque, adding to your "dickish, trolling persona".
-
I weep for our generation...that is, I am assuming you are the same age as I. If you are, in fact, older (this has happened before.), then I weep for our combined futures. For mine, for being such pricks, and for yours, for teaching ours it is ok to be a dick.
-
Ah, the old "Great Internet Fuckwad Theory". Just because it doesn't happen in "real life", doesn't mean it can't affect someone in real life.
