There Are no Vegetables in DayZ.

On a slightly related note, the "Three Sisters" method of agriculture is pretty much the go-to way of feeding yourself long-term in a TSC situation. Corn, beans, and pumpkins planted together in a big mound. The plants support each other, add nutrition to the soil, and provide all the the vitamins and minerals you need. Round out the system with potatoes ( a crop with substantial starch content, can grow in "waste land", where other crops cannot, and has an almost exponential population growth curve if you know what you are doing), and you have agriculture. I would like to see this implemented eventually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sisters_(agriculture) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potatoe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raised-bed_gardening

    Wooden Bows

I agree, a wooden self bow, especially made of Ash, should be a formidable weapon in the hands of someone skilled in its use. 60lbs of draw weight concentrated into your chest via a glass razorblade will put you on your ass right quick!.

    Raiders Leather Jacket vs Zombie

Yes, cleaning ALL firearms, even revolvers, is important to remove the caustic chemical residues left from gunpowder. But, a revolver (and a double barrel shotgun, for the same reason) CANNOT jam, due to the mechanism. It can squib, or have a round jam in the barrel, but it won't jam. And, AK-platform rifles can totally jam. They require just as much maintenance as other weapons, don't let pop fiction tell you otherwise.

    Shotgun's quite powerfull now?

And in real life, a shotgun loaded with buckshot would be accurate out to 100 meters. People have this idea that shotguns fire this great. big, stupid CONE of shot. It is actually pretty compact, with shot patterns (depending on gun characteristics, load, length of shell, and choke, etc) being roughly pie-plate accurate to 100 meters, with little "overpenetration" of walls ( and innocent civilians, which is why in the US, police recommend you own a shotgun for home defense, not a handgun) Said shot will also kill you dead at 100 meters as it will at 10. And, with slugs, hoo boy. A 12g slug (which is, essentially, a .69 caliber bullet) can have ranges similar to most rifles, so long as you have a stable shooting platform. My home state (Massachusetts, "where fun goes to die"), outlaws rifles for hunting, but you can use a shotgun. Plus, anything you hit with a 12g slug tends to die pretty quickly, due to the (relatively) slow velocity and high mass of the slug, versus a high-powered (read: high velocity) rifle bullet. In reality, a 12 gauge shotgun would be the #1 firearm to survive the zombie apocalypse. There is a plethora of rounds (birdshot, buckshot, slugs, flares, nonlethals doorbreachers, etc) to choose from, 12 gauge is EXTREMELY commonplace, it can kill everything from a rabbit up to a bear with proper shot placement, maintenance is easy (and with a double barrel, even easier, with fewer moving parts) Day Z standalone does not do the shotgun justice.

I created a game to play with DayZ

Are you sure? We are talking about the scope that can go on the SKS, right? Not the LRS? Because I tried it the other day and it would not let me.
  6. Whyherro123

I created a game to play with DayZ

You also cannot spell. ...SKS? An "unused and unloved gun"? What game have you been playing, because it sure as hell wasn't Day Z. ...Nothing says CQB like the Longhorn? What? ...Cannot mount a PU scope on a Mosin. ...Why would you take the buttstock off of the MP5K? Just why?
  7. Whyherro123

    Light fire to clothes.

It wouldn't kill them, by far. The human body is made up by a significant percentage of water. We don't burn all that easily. And, even if you were to catch their clothes on fire (wool doesn't burn, by the way), they could just do what YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO WHILE ON FIRE.......fall over, roll around and put it out. Besides, we all know it would be used to grief to no end.

    Hunting ideas and discussion

I like it. What I would like to see implemented is trapping, both for small and large game.

What should and shouldn't open cans

Damn straight. Apparently, our characters in the Standalone are too prissy to actually survive. "I opened the can of food, but dropped some on the floor" Me: Oh well, scoop that shit up and eat it. Most food in cans is already cooked, so you can't get sick by eating it. Day Z SA: OH NO IGNORE IT BURN THE UNCLEAN I DIDNT WANT IT ANYWAYS GAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
  10. I've also worn my full BDU kit to High school, although it was Veteran's Day, and I was known about the school as "that guy going to West Point", so that may be a mitigating factor... And yes, Massachusetts is a clusterfuck of conflicting, horribly implemented, and often BALLS OUT STUPID LAWS. The other New England States politely look away from Massachusetts whenever we make noise. "Taxachusetts, where if you aren't from Boston, Hingham/Hull (AKA rich motherfuckers), or Martha's Vineyard, go fuck off and die"
  11. Exactly. A major issue in my book is the fact that we lack a "timeframe" for the TSC (Total Societal Collapse) event, which in turn would dictate what kinds of equipment we would find about Chernarus. We have fresh fruit around, and not only temperate fruits, like apples and pears, but tropical fruits, like kiwis, bannanas, etc. This, to me, suggests that the TSC event occurred only a few days ago, a week tops, or there is some sort of society/trade outside South Zagoria that can (and more importantly, willing) that is bringing in fresh fruit for .... something Chernarus has to offer? On the other hand, we have overgrown fields (however, this isn't exactly uncommon, even in our non-postaplocalyptic world) and rusted hulks of vehicles. When the hell did the world go to shit? A week ago, or a year?
  12. And that is what is wrong with the current itineration of Day Z: TOO MUCH GODDAMN AMMO Now, I am split on the issue, because this is an alpha and we HAVE to test things, but there is still WAYY too much ammo to be found. Think about it: society has collapsed, nothing is being produced anymore. Where are these boxes of ammunition coming from, especially at the prodigious rate through which the playerbase burns through ammunition? Devs, PLEASE, significantly lower the spawn rate of ammunition later on in the "life" of Day Z. Keep weapon spawns at the same rate, but lower ammo spawns. I want to play "The Road", where having 5 rounds in a revolver is AWESOME, not the current incineration where I have 60 rounds of .357 waiting in the wings. Add additional CQC weapons, like spears and slings, and boost/make the bow worthwhile, we all know PVP will not be affected. I want my survival game to have SURVIVAL, not survival with a side of gunporn.
  13. Nonsense. I've worn my BDU jacket to school before. Maybe Massachusetts is different....
  14. It is also effective, and in my book (trained in Wilderness Survival) "effective" trumps "boring" in literally any and every circumstance.
  15. I don't really understand the hate for "military" clothing. I am unsure how it is in other countries, but in the US, even in a firearm-unfriendly state (yes, we do have those), you can still buy Milsurp stuff on the cheap. I myself own a set of Woodland BDU's (trousers and jacket), Web Belt, Combat harness, MOLLE patrol pack, and butt-ton of MOLLE-compatible pouches. All of this kit probably cost me less than $150 total, and I can carry enough supplies for literally weeks with only this. --Patrol pack: change of clothing, extra socks and undergarments, mess tin + 3 days MRE's, extra navigation gear, extra firestarters, 5 disposable ponchos, Military Poncho w/liner (shelter and sleeping) SAS survival guide (AKA survival bible), 2 steel water bottles, 50 feet rope. --MOLLE pouches (attached to belt/harness and backpack): dedicated survival kit, dedicated medical kit, dedicated navigation kit (maps of preferred camping areas, GPS + batteries), water treatment kit ( filter, water treatment tabs), dump pouch, firestarting kit, field knapping kit (I've recently gotten into glass-knapping for archery) --pockets on jacket and trousers: map of local area (pick up a new one every time I go to a National/State park or Forest, absolutely free.), additional firestarters. All of this stuff weighs probably less than 70 lbs. Heavy, yes, but I can take parts of it off when I want to. Going on a short hike? Take the harness with my separate kits. Backpacking in the deep woods? Take the whole ensemble in, leave most of it in base camp. I've climbed Mount Greylock with my full kit on me, in the middle of a New England February blizzard, just to see how much the weight and encumbrance would affect my balance and overland speed (My Troop thought I was crazy). I found out that so long as the load is balanced, you shouldn't have too much of an issue carrying it, and your balance will not be too badly affected, once you get used to the load. I could boulder and twist just fine wearing the kit, running was a bit of an issue, but in real life, you NEVER want to run up/down/along a mountainside, as you could trip and break a leg or worse. Military gear is extremely useful, and should not be snubbed to satisfy some false sense of "balance". Real life isn't balanced.

    Craftable Noose.

I, for one, would like the opportunity to hang bandits, as a warning to more of their neer-do-well bretheren!
  17. Whyherro123

    Craftable spears!

Your point concerning different-sized spears, for different purposes, is exactly what happened in real life. An "infantry" (read: stabby pokey) spear is between 5 to 7 feet long (only the shaft, mind), while a "javelin" (read: throwy) spear is only about 3 feet long. The longer spear is for stabbing, and is usually not all that balanced for throwing, while the javelin could be thrown with ease. I agree with your point about firearms, especially ammunition. Where are these stacks of bullets coming from? What factories are producing them?

Chernarus is starting to look empty

How is Chernarus in any way "desolate"? The land is clean and green, with little to no damage evident in the urban landscape to point to any "apocalyptic world". If anything, it looks like everyone up and died in their sleep. At this point in the game, there is readily available drinking water, plenty of food in the form of packaged stuff, crops and animals, and plenty of shelter. Realistically, with the number of people that "exist" in Chernarus at any time (40), there would be little to no competition over resources. The only reason people fight in this game is because they have little else to do. It certainly isn't (and wouldn't be, IRL) over supplies/territory.

    Craftable spears!

This is one thing that apparently many people on this forum don't (or don't want to) understand: weapons from times past were effective at killing things. Just because something doesn't fire a bullet doesn't mean it won't drop something. Spears were one of the first weapons invented by man, and has been continuously and heavily used over it's 40,000+ lifespan for the simple reason of it's effectiveness. Take the versatility and lethality (especially in an environment where advanced medical treatment AKA internal surgery is unavailable, ala Day Z Chernarus) of a knife, and add reach by adding a 5-7 foot-long pole. Boom, you have a weapon that can be used in a multitude of situations, all while keeping you relatively safe ( due to distance) One thing people have to realize is that melee and "primitive" weapons (like bows and slings) are, in the age of firearms, ambush weapons. A bow or a spear will never win in a one-on-one straight up fight against a firearm. However, striking from ambush, the "primitive" weapon will be just as effective as the firearm, with the added benefit of being silent.
  20. I run: Hoodie; good 4-slot shirts, can be found everywhereCargo pants; again, good size, can be found everywhereimprovised backpack; can be made with easily found supplies, good camo, reasonable size, can look over shoulderBlaze 95; probably the most efficient rifle in the game, hands down. Powerful (little will survive two 7.62x51mm rounds to the torso at 200 meters), pinpoint accurate up to 300 meters (which is well within the overwhelming majority of most of your shots), and ammunition is everywhere. I've killed more people with this bad boy than I can count.Magnum. God made men, Colt made them equal. Powerful and economical, this little beauty requires no magazines.Canteen; self explanatorySplitting axeMatchesKnife

    Craftable spears!

I just made a pretty nice spear out of the bottom of a beer bottle and a wooden broomstick. Knapped the glass bottle to a razor edge, then lashed it to the ready-made slot in the broomstick. Boom! I was armed. I was able to put the spear completely through an archery backstop target with only a modicum of effort.

    In-game Currency

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Hard alcohol is the way to go for a non-metal-based system of trade. Clans can use moonshine to power their generators and their vehicles. Doctors can use moonshine as an disinfectant, antiseptic, and painkiller/anesthetic. Other people can use it as water treatment, industrial solvent/lubricant/cleaner. Plus, it can be made pretty easily, and quality can be controlled via licensing/standardization. It's value is both controlled by its uses and by the value of the land (which supplied the crops to make the moonshine), limiting inflation to an extent. Moonshine should be the basis of American currency today!
  23. Damn straight. Not even including the fact that the types of axes in Day Z aren't even for felling trees. We have a Splitting axe (for splitting logs, with a wide head profile and blunt-ish edge) and a Firefighter's Axe (again, not for chopping trees). For the most "bang for your buck" when felling, use a dedicated "Hewing Axe", with a much longer and thinner head profile for cutting wood fibers.

Dayz was once described as a social experiment...

HAHAHAHAHAHA Listen, boyo, do some modern research on the so-called "Dark Ages" The "Dark Ages" were called such because "modern" (think 1500-1600's) didn't have a lot of information about the time period. Not because they were particularly violent. 1) There were organized governments during the time period. It was actually the remnants of the Roman Empire that was the worst off. The Thuringian Franks held most of northern France in an organized (read; safe and prosperous), for example. Look at Charles Martell, Charlemagne, The Carolingian Renaissance, etc. 2) Warfare was usually fought using small bands of very professional warriors, essentially proto-knights. Feudalism was heavily entrenched during this time. 3) People didn't suddenly forget about architecture (aqueducts, sewers, bathhouses, etc), trade (the Vikings traded far FAR more than they raided, with trade routes reaching Arabia, CHINA, and the goddamn Americas), or medicine. There was a "Little Ice Age" during the 600s, which caused worldwide temperatures to drop. Aside from affecting agriculture, the drop in temperatures caused massive deforestation across Europe, killing public bathhouses (essentially, they got too expensive to run) TL;DR Do some more research. Use "the Dark Ages!!!" in any sort of anthroplogical circle today, and you will be laughed out of the building. They never existed, at least not as they are portrayed in popular culture.
