A couple new things from this weeks Status Report

Smoking increases body stress, actually. The "decreased stress" is pretty much a psychological trick. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking#Health_effects_and_regulation
  2. Whyherro123

    New dog tag system?

Why would our characters have dog tags? We aren't members of the CDF, Russian Federation Army, or USMC.

    Not really a survival game

Glad to see that you contribute oh-so-much to the discussion, boyo.... As for the OP, you are half-right. Day Z isn't much of a survival game yet. With the upcoming .49 update, PvE with finally start to catch up to PvP

    Wooden arrows?

IIRC correctly, the "improvised arrows" can only be used in the "improvised bow", which makes sense. And, you can totally shoot wooden arrows from a compound bow IRL, so long as you are careful. There isn't necessarily any more force imparted into an arrow by a compound vs a recurve/selfbow. The "compound" cams just make it easier to draw and hold the string back. Case in point: I own a compound bow that has a 45lbs "draw weight", with the release weight about 65lbs. I've also made a wooden selfbow out of an oaken branch that had a draw-and-release weight of about 80lbs. (Yes, that thing was a beast). I shot the same wooden arrows from both. Granted, the arrows I made were sturdy, heavy-survive-the-apocalypse hunting arrows and not so much for distance, but still. If the devs want to make wooden bolts for the crossbow, that is just asinine.

Rain will be the new night?

What? Are you serious? Exposure to the elements is probably the #1 cause of death in strandings/ wilderness survival events. 2nd is dehydration. They switch off being #1/#2 depending on the region and weather. Do you not realize that it is Autumn in the Standalone? Stop for a while and look at your character. Their breath fogs, signifying that the air temp is cold enough to freeze the water vapor in their breath. Take a look around. The chlorophyll in the deciduous trees is going away. That happens later in the year when there is not enough sunlight to sustain photosynthesis, AKA when it gets colder. Take a look at some of the crops growing in the agricultural fields. Apples, pumpkins, with corn and wheat already harvested. I would put it at late October/mid November. This means that might be warm-ish during the day, when the sun is out, but it can get COLD during the night. And you most definitely would not want to get stuck out in the rain during an Autumn rainstorm.

Rain will be the new night?

And in real life, if you run around in the rain, you die from hypothermia. Such as it is in Day Z. You run around in the rain, you die from hypothermia. Don't like it? Go join the rest of the server-hopping brigade. I, for one, want as much "realism" stuffed into the game as possible. I want weapon maintenance (that takes a considerable about of time). I want weapon jams if maintenance is not done. I want shoes to wear out (and to be a whole slew of different sizes AHEM REALISM), so the hunt for new shoes is almost as pressing as the hunt for more bullets. I want worn, ill-fitting shoes to cause foot pain and blisters, slowing you down (not until after vehicles/alternate travel is implemented, of course). I want shelterbuilding, to get out of the rain and to store stuff. I want trapping/foraging, being able to trap squirrels and rabbits, and eat plants other than berries (there are pumpkins, wheat, etc everywhere in Chernarus). I want horticulture, I want ammunition reloading, I want complex vehicles. I want a goddamn SURVIVAL game, not just a point-and-click-TPS/FPS-with-added-survival-elements.
  7. Whyherro123

Rain will be the new night?

Pretty much. Repairing vehicles, then using them in combat. Repairing/maintaining armament, growing food. All the stuff that the PvP-ers don't seem to think about all that much, but is ABSOLUTELY necessary for any modern army to function. There is a saying: "Amateurs study tactics, Veterans study strategies, Professionals study logistics".

Rain will be the new night?

What would you do in real life if it was a survival situation and there was inclement weather? Not got derp about in it People forget this is supposed to be (at least somewhat) a survival game, sometimes. So yes, I hope and pray the devs make certain activities take longer. Repairing clothing, weapon maintenance (cleaning, repairing, reassembly), meal preparation. My clan has an entire section of players preparing for this. We will be the "logistics division", making sure the fighting arms have the necessary weapons, clothing, medical supplies, and food necessary to defend our territory, when that time comes. The game shouldn't (and hopefully, won't be) all BANG BANG BANG HACKFEST KILLING BAMBIS UP IN NOVO
  9. Hey, I am an Eagle Scout too! *Eagle Scout Fistbump* I discussed it because clothing doesn't necessarily have to be an "either-or" kind of thing. Right now, you can only wear 5 "types: of clothing; A top (sweatshirt, jacket, T-shirt, etc) Pants (jeans, shorts, etc) Shoes (boots, sneakers, wellies, etc) Hats (bandannas, winter caps, baseball caps, boonie caps, etc) GlovesIf you, for example, are wearing a sweatshirt, then put on a rainjacket, in-game you take off the sweatshirt and put on the rainjacket, which I find absoutely ASININE. Obviously, you know that layering is one of the best ways to stay warm and dry (or cool, whatever) in a survival situation. Why then, does the game have our characters cripple their survival chances by removing valuable pieces of clothing? I would like to see some sort of "layering" system implemented (obviously, after cold and weather effects. Day Z Standalone takes place in autumn, so both would be serious considerations for immediate survival) For example, you can wear three or four different layers on your torso, for rain protection/warmth retention, camouflage, etc. BUT by doing so, you limit your "agility" decreasing the rate and\t which you turn, shift, etc) Have a T-shirt, then a sweatshirt (for warmth), then a BDU jacket for camouflage. This would decrease your "agility" by a bit. If it starts to rain, put on a rainjacket over everything else, but this would decrease your "agility" by a lot. Or, you want to travel through a swamp (for some stupid reason). You tromp through the swamp in sneakers, they get ruined and you get hypothermia and wet, bruised feet (which would seriously affect your walking/running speed). Or, you could take the time to put on a pair of wool socks and some wellies, and be perfectly fine at the the other side of the swamp. I want choices, and not just for aesthetic reasons. I know wilderness survival (I've taught a High Adventure program in it for a while now, combining wilderness survival, ahem...."personal development", leadership training, and emergency management. Pretty good program, if I can say so myself), and I can say that wilderness survival isn't truly about building a shelter, or knowing how to build a fire (although those are important aspects). The most important part of wilderness survival training involves being taught how to recognize the "right choice". Do I stop to put on this rain jacket, and get my movement impaired, or do I press on without it (in case of ambush), and hope I don't get hypothermia? Those kinds of choices, not "Which assault rifle should be considered end-game?"
  10. To make clean water: Take a metal pot, fill with water. Boil. Boom, clean water. -OR- Take a 2L soda bottle, cut the bottom off. Punch holes in it, and insert inside the inverted top. Fill with alternating layers of powdered charcoal and sand. Fill with water and let it drip out the bottleneck. Boom, clean water. There being a scarcity of bullets I can see (no new factories making them, are there?) and can wholeheartedly support. But, the "hate" for military clothing is entirely ridiculous. At least where I am from, milsurp gear is cheap, dependable (tear resistant, tough, and comfortable) and reliable (depending on the type, it may be wind and water resistant) I own a set of camo BDU's (Both the jacket and the pants) I've worn both in the woods in November, in the rain, and been fine. Want to know why? Goddamn layering. In real life, I can wear an undershirt, then a milsurp fleece jacket, then my BDU jacket (which is in and of itself relatively water-resistant and warm, with it's long sleeves and all) I actually started to overheat with all of this on, so I unbuttoned the BDU jacket and unzipped the neck flap of the fleece. Within a few minutes, I was comfortable again. If the rain picked up, I could go into my pack and take out my poncho, then put it on over my other clothing. It is only in Day Z where I can wear either a sweatshirt -OR- a rainjacket, but not both.

    Crossbows being ignored?

This is why I am hoping ammunition spawns will eventually be cut back. (WAY WAY back. I just took a leisurely stroll through Novo and found 40 Mosin rounds, 30 shotgun shells, 80 magnum rounds, and assorted .45 and .380 rounds. Come on now.). So, you can have a firearm, but only a few rounds for it. At that point, the crossbow or the self-bow start to look pretty good, especially if they make arrow crafting more viable.
  12. Whyherro123

    Booby Trap your Gear?

Why not? People, unfortunately, have to live with the unexploded remnants of WW2. Landmines are a problem in Africa, etc. It would add a great deal of "tactical"-esque feeling to the game. Imagine coming up to an open field, and yo can see a clan's base o\on the other side. AS you run across the field, you notice little piles of dirt......... BOOOM! NO legs for you!

One weird trick to avoid upcoming character wipe

    1) Never get attached to your gear 2) It is a game-wide wipe. There is no escape. It should've happened a long time ago.....
  14. Holy shit, what are you running the game on, a toaster?
  15. Whyherro123

Is it to easy to gear up?

    Yessssssssss...........................
  16. Whyherro123

    Crossbows being ignored?

Arrows and bolts can actually penetrate particularly fdeep, depending on impact angle and medium. This is a video about testing the penetration of stone arrowheads on a deer, using a "measly" 40 lb bow. A stronger bow or a crossbow would be much more effective. So, bows and crossbows would fuck you up.
  17. Whyherro123

How the end game should look.

    Damn straight.
  18. Whyherro123

    Cruel Joke or What?

Seriously, mate? It is a fucking hacksaw, a tool that should be in almost every single garage in Chernarus. Let us not even touch dedicated workshops. Same thing with hammers, and duct tape, and rope, and GODDAMN MAPS. I can go to the convience store right down my road and pick up road maps for the entire goddamn state. I can go to the US Federal Park Service center downtown, and pick up topographical maps for the entire goddamn state. Why do we have to search for them in-game? Why are they split into 4 pieces? How do you attach pieces of a paper map back together? See, there is "difficult", then there is "artificial difficulty". The stupid and nonsensical loot system is partly an example of the latter.
  19. Whyherro123

Do you prefer fast zombies or slower zombies?

How? Living flesh doesn't rot. Neither does the flesh of those suffering from rabies, the closest, most realistic example of an actual zombie we have. Guess what? Animals (and presumably, people.) infected with rabies aren't slow, shuffling creatures. They shift from being horrifying berserkers one minute and trembling,spaced-out things the next.
  20. Whyherro123

Do you prefer fast zombies or slower zombies?

Mate, I can carry 150 lbs of gear up a mountain with little issue, and I am a fat slob out of his prime. What do you think I can do when my life is on the line, with adrenaline coursing through my veins? Zombie grabs me in a house. Mr. Hammer, meet Mrs. Forehead. Zombie horde marching towards me? All I have to do is keep a slightly faster pace than them, much easier done walking than sprinting. And, in real life (or a more complete game), I wouldn't have all the gear on my back. It would be left at camp, safe and sound. I can book it much easier with a bookbag of medicine and ammuniton thrown over my shoulder, than with all of my clothing, cooking gear, etc. Slow zombies aren't only unrealistic, they are stupid as a concept. Worse still, they are hilariously inept at transmitting whatever-it-is that zombies you. You have to be literally ignoring your situation awareness to get surrounded, as the "classical" zombies moan, shuffle, and derp their way towards you. At least with fast "infected", capable of everything a human being is capable of (and we are capable of beating the shit out of almost every animal in the world when we are adrenaline crazed, believe it or not. When adrenaline is counted for AKA fight-or-flight, the average human male is stronger ( both in pound-for-pound measurements and muscle density/performance measurements) than both chimpanzees and black bears, with a higher level of agility/wider range of motion as well) , the transmission of zombification-whatsits is at least possible. Like you said, you can't run forever, but you can walk at a brisk pace near all damn day TL;DR Slow zombies are hilarious, fast zombies are terrifying.
  21. Whyherro123

Do you prefer fast zombies or slower zombies?

If you have no ammunition, which I hope will have a serious drop in spawn rates, you will not be shooting any zombies, will you? No, you run. Run and hide, and hope they can't catch up and kill you. Survival horror at its finest. With your moronic vision, you can traipse through a town, looting as you go, confident that you can out- WALK the group of zombies shuffling three blocks behind you. There is no fear, just "better keep these zombies behind me, they can't catch me unless I do something asinine"! What a shit game, LOL
  22. He kind of was a bit of a dick. Breaking into people's homes for DECADES? You can learn to grow your own food, build your own log cabin (which would be much more efficient than a tent), and build your own tools in shorter time. He sounds like he has some sort of issues, mentally or socially. And, if you are going to live in the woods, do it on public land! (the story touches on this). There isn't much the government can do to you on there, except for poaching charges, and they have to find you to do that. In the middle of summer, Maine has so much vegetable food available, he really shouldn't have needed to raid people's houses for food. Cattail, Blueberry, cranberry, liliypad tubers, dock, raspberry, blackberry, plantains, etc. Take it and preserve it. And in the Fall, there is even more! Hazelnuts, acorns, apples, pine nuts. And he could've trapped game and fished all year long. Nope, he wanted those steaks and candy.
  23. Whyherro123

does anyone find the crossbow underpowered

That is the thing, though: getting shot with an arrow should not be something that can be shrugged off. You have a razorblade-tipped pointed projectile LODGED in your body (if the shooter knows what they are doing, probably somewhere in the upper torso, cutting up your lungs and major blood vessels), interfering with muscle movement and causing ALOT of pain. An arrow will kill you just as dead as a bullet.
  24. Whyherro123

Do you prefer fast zombies or slower zombies?

Damn straight. They aren't "superslow shambling undead beings from the depths of hell". They are your middle-aged neighbor, gone to fat. They are that old lady down the street. They are people, with all that implies.
  25. Whyherro123

does anyone find the crossbow underpowered

Pretty much. Now, don't get me wrong, a bow/crossbow would (and should) lose every time to a firearm in a stand-up fight. But, in an ambush situation, an arrow/bolt to the upper chest will kill you just as fast as a bullet.
