1) How do you expect a bolt to detonate a timed-fuse fragmentation grenade? Not even touching the fact that frag grenades are only really "effective" at damaging soft-skin vehicles. (And by "damaging", I really mean "shredding the occupants inside". Fragmentation shrapnel will do jack-all to stop the vehicle. 2) That.....is not how a shotgun shell works. The primer is on the rear of the shell, so to make this work, you would essentially have a shotgun shell stuck onto the front of a bolt. Zero aerodynamic properties, which means you won't be hitting anything. Also, the plastic casing will hit the target first and, most likely, crumple, directing the pressure and buckshot back away from the target. Also, buckshot has issues penetrating personal body armor. A shotgun will not be stopping any vehicles. This is similar to what I mention in #2. He uses a 9mm stuck onto a crossbow bolt. Notice what happens when the bullet hits the cinderblock? The bolt gets shot backwards towards the point of release. If he wasn't in cover, he would probably have gotten the fletchings of the bolt in his eye. Remember Newton's Third Law, kids: for every reaction, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In a firearm, the explosive force is countered by the firearm moving backwards, known as recoil. The firearm essentially absorbs the recoil (well, most of it), allowing the bullet to move forwards. In an open system (like in the video above), there was no "restraining object" to hold in the force of the explosion; the bolt and casing flew backwards. There was nothing acting on the bullet,, so it didn't really get a lot of forward velocity, and it didn't even penetrate the block. Something that a .22LR can do with ease.

Bayonets. Easy to use, efficient ( a knife bayonet is also usable as a combat knife, utility knife, and wire cutter), and effective, especially when your foe runs straight at you and makes no attempt to dodge ( AKA zeds) Use it in room-clearing, when low on ammunition ( Why waste a bullet on that bambi?), or when you want to scare the piss out of the enemy. Especially if this central loot economy keeps on lowering the spawn rate of ammunition, I expect bayonets to come to the forefront of combat again.

My friends shoot anyone who is geared ...
Whyherro123 replied to EvilTigerAce's topic in General Discussion
KoS does not utilize surprise. The ones I see don't surprise anyone. Case in Point: There was one of the guys shacked up in Berez, killing anyone that got within his sights. A bambi ran up, said "I know you are in there, can you just tell me where I am?" ( Everyone makes stupid mistakes.) Guy shoots bambi, without even talking to him. Was that surprise? No. "Ambushing" is a very viable tactic that requires advanced tactics and knowledge to pull off. Running up to someone and killing them while they are eating/drinking/what have you doesn't involve much tactics, skill, or much of anything beyond button mashing -
Exactly. Why, except for some near-bogus "TRADITION" rationale, we would spawn in AUTUMN wearing little more than a t-shirt is incomprehensible. It isn't like a sweatshirt in-game does really anything for you. It doesn't keep you warm all that well (for some reason), and you get 4 slots. Big woop.

My friends shoot anyone who is geared ...
Whyherro123 replied to EvilTigerAce's topic in General Discussion
Nope. Notice how I never said there was a mechanical difference between "PvP" and "KoS". There is, however, a "philosophical" one. My group does, in fact, partake in PvP. ( As do I. I still cannot understand why being anti-KOS also means being anti- PvP) We, however, do not simply kill every player that wanders into our gunsights. Most of time, we will "have the drop" on the other player, and attempt to open communication. If they comply, we handcuff, disarm, then interrogate the subject. Depending on the info,we send a team to intercept the opposing force, then remove all ammunition from the player/give him back his weapon. If they don't comply, or is antagonistic during interrogation ( trash-talking, clearly talking on TS, etc), well, they get killed. Not tortured, but stripped of all gear (so they can come back for it if they want it that bad) and executed cleanly. We also have a dim view of those players who sit in a building in Berez/Svet/Novo and kill anyone that moves around their building. We once came across a building in Berez that had 4 freshspawn bodies stacked up in the door, unlooted. We popped in the backdoor and introduced the guy to our wonderful friend, Mr. Anti-personnel fragmentation grenade. The guy had an M4 with hacked magazine, as well as a protector case full of grenades. AKA killing freshspawns for kicks. -
Negative. Surviving alone vs in a group, even a small one, is so much more difficult, you wouldn't even understand. I teach a wilderness survival class. I demonstrated how groups make everything easier. It took me about 4 hours to build a shelter ( a real one, with insulation, waterproofing, and whatnot), a fire, and gather enough firewood to last the night. It took a group of 3 people 1 hour to accomplish the same. You will eventually get diminishing returns on group size vs "effectiveness" ( A larger group will require a larger shelter and a larger fire, stripping a larger area of supplies faster), but that is why you split larger survivor groups up into smaller, individually-tasked groups. ( For example, group A has 3 people. They go ahead of the main party, finding the fastest/most effective trail, removing obstacles, etc. In Day Z, these could be your forward scouts. Group B has X people, does general group stuff. Group C has 5 people, they cover your backs to make sure nobody falls behind, etc. In Day Z, they make sure you don't get ambushed from behind.) Larger groups also help with the division of labor. One group can build the shelter, one can build the fire and collect wood, the other can gather water and cook. Get 10x as much done in half the time.

Damn straight. If I introduce the hammer-head of my crate hatchet to your dome, you shouldn't be able to walk it off.

Food, I agree with you. But clothing? No way should that be hard to find. How many people lived in South Zagoria before the SHTF? Let us lowball it and say 50,000 people. That would equal, at the low end , 150,000 different complete outfits. Let the clothing be damaged, with appropriate loss in insulation, yes. Let some of it be ruined! But don't let my character freeze to death on a sunny Autumn day because he couldn't find a sweatshirt in ELECTRO. AKA the 2nd (or 3rd, comparing Novo and Cherno) most densely populated urban center in South Zagoria.

New NE airstrip civilian Terminal. Bye ATC tower?
Whyherro123 replied to chompster's topic in General Discussion
I think it is a poor decision, at least from a realism standpoint. My city has a municipal airport that is roughly the same size as the NEAF. It only services small personal prop airplanes, as well as small (12 person) lines to the Cape and Islands. It has a full hangar section, maintenance yard, and ATC. http://www.nitscheng.com/B64CCE/assets/images/projects/big/New-Bedford-airport.jpg It also has its own security team. Just because something is "civilian" doesn't mean it can't have able weaponry. -

Nice strawman argument there, kiddo. Nothing wrong with PvP. There is something wrong with KoS, however. That discussion is for another thread. -

Oh no, I knew what the outcome was going to be as soon as they walked in. If I am going to die, why bother being pleasant, or compliant? I did get my hopes up when the 1st kid told me to build a fire, but I wasn't expecting much. -

Yesterday, I ran into a little garage, about 5 minutes west of Cherno. I ran into there in order to build a fire and dry off, as it had just literally just stopped raining. Upon running in, I was then shot by a M4-wielding "badass" from outside the garage. He hit my legs (My leg is painful) and made me bleed, but sucked too much to cause any real damage. Me: Hey, hey hey! Stop shooting, all I want to do is build a fire and dry off!" 1st Guy (Squeaker) : GET ON THE GROUND AND DROP YOUR GUN (I had a Blaze and a Magnum) Me: No. When I do that, you will just shoot me. I am going to build a fire, and dry off. 1st Guy: ...Alright, go ahead. Me: Alright. BTW, why the fuck did you shoot me? I am all alone, and I don't have anything better than you. 2nd Guy (in fake Russian accent): Watch your mouth! My friend here is super marksman! Me: Sure. That is why he mag-dumped. ( Accidentally made splint instead of fireplace) Woops 1st Guy: LOL What a dumbass. Me: Whatever, I needed one anyways. I am going to go get firewood. (leaves garage) 2nd Guy: -proceeds to shoot at me with M4, misses horribly- Me: Really? Tiny dicked limp-wristed motherfucker! I JUST WANT TO MAKE A FIRE! -You are unconcious- Fuck this playerbase sometimes...... -
Ushanka hats are awesome, I think For some reason, sweatshirts do jack all to keep you warm. TTsKo gear is pretty good as well, apparently. Gorka gear reigns supreme!

The War on Wilderness - Reclaiming Myshkino
Whyherro123 replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much: for "military" (HAHAHA, what do you consider military? In-game, there is really only one "non-military" firearm, the Blaze 95. Literally all of the other firearms have been/are used by some military force in history), add in weapon maintenance and jams. Over time, firearms get dirty and degrade. They also have an increased chance of jamming after going for a while without maintenance. Automatic/cyclic firearms would be the most affected, while manual weapons would be the least affected. What to know what firearms would not be affected by jams? The Blaze 95, IZH shotgun, and the .357 Magnum. If it takes 20 minutes of cleaning and disassemble a day in order to effectively use that M4/AKM/AK101, then some people might switch. Not my clan. We have a specialized division in my group, that are focused solely on logistical support. When (I seriously hope) it gets implemented, we will be the "second Line" troopers, cleaning firearms, reloading ammunition, growing food, and chopping wood for fires. So, while you guys are suffering from debilitating malnutrition-related diseases, hypothermia, and a jammed rifle, we can come in and sweep you off the map. Amateurs study tactics, Veterans study strategy, Professionals study logistics. -
Why nobody want to play in the night time?
Whyherro123 replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
You do realize that when you use a light after going dark for a while, you LOSE your night vision? The whole screen going black when you light a fire is very realistic. When I am in the woods at night (which is rare, but it happens), I don't use a light, as your night vision will develop after a few minutes. Using a light after that point will kill your night vision, and it will take a lot longer to come back. -
Do you carry a handgun when you have an automatic rifle?
Whyherro123 replied to roguetrooper's topic in General Discussion
What. Do.....do you know how firearms work? 1) How you put a handgun...ah....."behind your back"?. What does that even mean? 2) If you stuff a handgun down your pants, you deserve to blow your balls off. Hell, go ahead, clean out the gene pool a bit. 3) Again, what? What do you mean by "sneakiness"? We have a chest holster for a REASON. Handguns are the only thing that can go into them, so they don't "waste space". -
Give me a pump action shotgun, with the ability to mount a bayonet on the bastard, and I will be a happy man.

Let's talk about body armor and its possible negatives to gameplay.
Whyherro123 replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
And I counter this by saying that this "damage absorption" of which you speak isn't really all that impressive. It should only really work for a couple of bullets. And only below a certain caliber. Big woop. So, you can tank a couple (literally) of 7.62x39mm rounds (and only to the chest), with broken ribs and broken (read: useless) armor plates. Congrats. Now you need to go find more armor plates.... that is, if you survive the firefight, since you are now knocked on your ass, winded, possibly injured, and with someone still aiming down the sights at you. Now, they can shoot you in any of the unarmored body parts you are presenting; legs (bleed out in seconds) arms (bleed out), stomach (super-painful, internal bleeding), or the head. Should ballistics armor work properly? Yes. Should it be worth the time to loot it, carry it, and break (get shot) it? From a practical standpoint, almost no. -
I want more shotguns (pump, automatic), plus I want the damn buckshot to work as it is supposed to, plus SLUGS, and FLARES. Also, this:

Whyherro123 replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
I think some people here don't understand how modern ballistic armor works. See, you've got a plate of bullet resistant material (the US Armed forces uses a ceramic plate.) All it does is stop the bullet from penetrating your body. You still receive the force of the bullet, with the resulting bruises, broken bones, etc. And don't forget about deformation, especially with older steel plates. The bullet doesn't penetrate the plate, but it deforms it enough to cause severe damage to muscle and internal organs. My friend in the Army actually asked for a plate carrier in a larger size (looser fit) to avoid this. Having a plate carrier doesn't make you INVINCIBLE. The plate will only reliably stop a bullet or three, and only past a certain range (I think my friend said his plates were only good when the shooter was farther than 20 meters) ,with the aforementioned aftereffects (concussive force, deformation, etc.) So, you most definitely will not be tanking 6 Mosin rounds to the torso and keep trucking. The plates will protect you from a couple of AKM/M4 rounds, and you should suffer severe bruising/broken bones as well. That, coupled with the weight of the system and the impedence on agility, will make plate carriers very situational, in my opinion. If they weren't MOLLE-compatible, I probably wouldn't use it. TL:DR Modern soldiers still seek/stay in cover during a firefight. The armor plates protect you until you get in cover, while giving you a place to store your gear. Plus, armor plates don't deflect bullets harmlessly, you will still feel the shot/get hurt, and the entire thing is going to be heavy as a motherfucker. There are lighter vests, but they will only stop handgun rounds. -
Why nobody want to play in the night time?
Whyherro123 replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
If you can see them, they can see you. And, while humans indeed actually have very good night vision, our night vision is greyscale, which makes it very difficult to make out contrasting colors, such as sudden drops in terrain, brush, etc. You are much more likely to hurt yourself by travelling at night, even if it is a full moon and you can see. -
Not really. It might semi-accurately reflect the space/volume taken up by larger objects, but definitely not smaller ones, or objects that can fit inside other ones. Case in point: IRL, I can fit about 3 days worth of food (repackaged dried stuffs) OR a couple of cans inside my cooking pot, alongside my stove. OR, I can fit my sleeping kit into the stove. In Day Z, the same amount of food, the pot, and the stove takes up almost half a mountain backpack. Same thing with pens, bottles of pills, maps, compasses. EDIT: I just read the last part of your post, and realized that I said pretty much the same thing : P

Why nobody want to play in the night time?
Whyherro123 replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
Because; Why would you? If this were a Rl scenario ( as it is supposed to be, being a "realistic/authentic" game), you would not wander around in the dark. There is too much risk of injury for too little gain, not to mention the fact that in a RL survival scenario, you would have to sleep A LOT to recuperate.
