A look at one of the new zombie models

No one batted an eye? Did you miss the fact that the game was banned in Germany, and when it was released, children were removed from the game entirely? Also. nice strawmen arguements, there.

In the base of my backpack, I carry a little rubber mat, about 1 foot square and 1 inch thick. I love that thing! Stand on it like an anti-fatigue mat, then sit on it as insulation from the ground.

A look at one of the new zombie models

If a fully grown, reasonably-fit adult human male is barely able to fight off more than one zombie with their fists ( Seriously, go one-on-one, without "juking" around. You are probably gonna get your ass handed to you), how do you think a child will fare? Not even including the fact that these children will be fighting off their goddamn parents. Think about that for more than 3 seconds. How do you think they would react? Also, dismembering is a stupid idea, especially when considering the "zombies" we encounter in-game are little more than sick, feverish individuals infected with some sort of disease. Do you know how difficult it is to cut through bone? Much less when the bone is able to move around. Not even touching the fact that severing a limb would lead to unconsciousness and death within a few minutes. A normal human being, after they get gutshot, will be in excruciating pain. A 7.62x54mm round to a limb will shatter the limb. Take a look at the cavitation properties of some of the bullets we use in-game. Nasty shit. Finally, there will never, EVER, EVER be children infected implemented in the game, as far as I can estimate. Want to know why? Fucking laws, mate. Day Z would end up banned in most of Europe, with Australia most definitely following suit. Hell, even the US would be leery on letting you buy a game that lets you mime shooting children. And for good goddamn reason.

What. 1) Learn to punctuate. It literally took me 5 minutes to read and understand 3 lines of text. 2) ....Not really. I've climbed a 3,000 foot high mountain, where the air temp was sub-zero (F), with wind speeds of 40+mph, wearing little more than a fleece parka, a cap, gloves, and jeans. I was overheating. So long as you are protected from the wind and insulated from the ground, you can literally sit down on the ground in sub-zero temps and be fine, so long as you are properly dressed. I've done it. 3) Ah, the old " you must be 12 because I disagree with what you say". Go away 4) This IS constructive criticism. By and far, this thread has been pretty level and polite.

How would the kids stay alive long enough to become infected, then die? I assumed they were all killed, or eaten. I also read somewhere that the disease that caused the zombification in Day Z was a Prion disease. If so, it wouldn't be able to be passed through a bite.

Yep. I personally carry around 3 -4 different firestarters (matches, flint&steel, lighter), as well as candles, dried birch bark, cotton balls, and dried tinder from the trail. You CAN find dry wood, even in the rain (splitting wet logs in half, looking under overhangs, etc). If you know what you are doing, you can even get a fire going in a rainstorm. Fire is important, kids!

    Love the New Sway

And now most military's don't even equip the basic soldier with a fully automatic assault rifle anymore, due it being deemed "ineffective" ( Look it up) Most armies have semi-automatic/3 rnd burst rifles as the service rifle, with full-auto suppression being covered by squad level SAWs and Platoon/Compant level GMPG/HMGs. Long-range (read: 300 + meters) is covered by Designated Marksmen, who are often armed with little more than an accurized (longer barrel, optics) version of the standard-issue service rifle. What I do not like, however, is how fast the sway comes on, as it were. IRL, I am not a "super-LEET SNIPAH", by any means, but I can steady a rifle on my knee and make an accurate shot, even after climbing a mountain and doing a light jog. I also feel like we should have the ability to rest the firearm on something (a bag, a braced arm, a wall, etc). My 2 cents.

Note how you won't really be surviving all that easily if you look at the temperatures I suggested above. A sweatshirt during a sunny day is alright, so long as there isn't any wind. If you have been paying attention, Chernarus is apparently a pretty windy place, especially the loooonnnnggg open fields in western Chernarus, where most of the high-value military loot is located. Factoring in wind chill could bring the temp down to 40 degrees F (4.44 degrees C), which would mean that that sweatshirt by itself wouldn't cut it; a warm hat would be a must, as well as limiting outside exposure. It would be uncomfortable ( AKA I am slowly cooling down), but survivable with a sweatshirt, cap, and gloves, but you should definitely be on the lookout for a warm jacket and have a fire in mind, especially if the sun is setting.

    Living off the land challenge

Simple, remove 75%-90% of the water fountains found in Chernarus. Make "free" clean, potable water a rare resource. If you remove the "free and safe" water spigots, then people would either; Have to treat their own water, either through boiling in a pot, filtering, or through the current chem-tabs Travel to one of the few remaining wells. Point #2 is very interesting, as it opens the possibility of clans taking control of said spigots, then charging other players for the use. Other clans could attempt to take over these spigots (and the wealth), giving an actual reason for organized PvP, while independent traders could buy stockpiles of water, then travel around Chernarus trading the water, Fallout-style. IRL, boiling enough water for even a small group ( approximately 6 people) was a pain in the ass, and took a substantial amount of time and materials (firewood, which needed to be gathered and split). I expect these water-merchants would be the preferred means of getting water if my above plan was implemented. Just think of the "political" opportunities it could offer! Clan: Oh hey, the water traders are here! Traders: nope, not this time, just passing through. Clan: What!? Why? Traders: Some of your guys knocked over one of our caravans and killed some of our guys. You won't be getting any water soon, at least from us, until you publicly apologize (On the forums, maybe?) and pay us restitution.

Oh, I thought you were referring to "sub-zero" in Fahrenheit, which would be ridiculous. However, it being as cold/colder than 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) is still quite a stretch, at least during a sunny day. IMHO, it should be about 55 degrees F (12.7 C) during a sunny day, maybe 40-45 factoring in wind chill /shady environments (4.44-7.22 C). At night, it would possibly (probably, considering what it gets like around me) get down below 35-30 degrees F (0 degrees C)

Rain coats realistically would not be the go-to gear to prevent hypothermia. The very reason they are effective at blocking rain would also be your doom. Most rain coats are made of non-breathable materials (nylon, coated fabric, rubber, etc) This makes them good at shedding water, but also holds in the body's heat. Now, initially, you might think "Yeah, so? That is good!" Not really. It will hold in the body's heat, but also makes you sweat. Sweat cools your body by evaporation, taking heat away from the skin (and, from the capillary blood vessels in the skin). This sweat will not be able to evaporate, and will instead sit on the skin, soaking into whatever other clothes you are wearing, taking away their insulation qualtities ( clothing keeps you warm by trapping a layer of air near to your skin. This layer acts as a buffer against the colder air away from you) I've actually had one of my students develop a pretty serious case of hypothermia in the summer , all because he didn't open his raingear enough to prompt the evaporation of built-up sweat. His buddy came running back to the base camp, saying his buddy was sitting on the side of the trail, shivering like mad and unable to walk any more back to camp. By the time I got to him, he had no idea where he was and was unable to use his hands. I took off his rainjacket (which was a PITA, with him shivering like that, besides being as unhelpful as possible) to find he was soaked to the skin in his own sweat. We got him back to actual summer camp, where he got a nice warm ambulance ride to the local hospital. Hypothermia isn't just a "cold weather thing", ladies and gentlemen.

    1) Not really. It doesn't have to be sub-zero for your breath to fog. IRL, I have had my breath fog during the middle of the summer! It was early in the morning, when the air temperature was a relatively-cold 57 degrees. In-game, my breath doesn't fog "all of the time", only when I am in shadow, high up, or approaching nightfall. This makes sense, as it really doesn't take all that much of a temperature difference to make your breath condensate/freeze If it was sub-zero during the daytime in Chernarus, then the plant species currently growing there would not be. Also, the small streams and ponds seen in Chernarus would be frozen over, as none of them are deep enough to support any real temperature stratification [There is an actual scientific difference between "ponds" and "lakes". Bio/Ecology major aside...) Also, the algae (phytoplankton) that is growing in these water bodies (which is why they are green) is still alive, indicating both an ample supply of sunlight and relatively warm water (and therefore air temps, by proxy).Very simple. I continue to stand by my point that it is currently mid-Autumn in Day Z standalone, and not really all that much will change my mind, outside of Word-Of-God. All of the available evidence (tree species/vegetation, crops, weather, geological conditions, etc) supports the fact that it is late October, early November at the latest. -AHEM- With that out of the way, and with the above point in mind, currently IMHO, it is too damn cold in Chernarus, even with the bug. As I said in the last thread, I live in an environment that is extreme similar to that of Cherarus ( very close latitude, similar ecological conditions, similar weather patterns, etc). I can go outside in mid-November in New England in a sweatshirt and slacks (Mid-October is still shorts-worthy), while in Chernarus a sweatshirt is apparently made of broken dreams and sadness. Notice: I am not saying it shouldn't be cold! All I am saying is to.....tone it down a bit? A sweatshirt and pants should see you through a sunny day fine, but, when you go into the shade of a mountain, or the sun begins to set, you will probably want to pull out that jacket and cap. If it rains, pull on a raincoat (IRL, I only wear raincoats when it rains, as they are too hot otherwise, being non-breathable. There are raincoats made of breathable fabrics, but they are expensive as all hell). Finally, walking at a brisk pace/ jogging should definitely have an effect on body temp. You undergo metabolic processing for a reason, after all, one of which is maintaining body temp. If you walk in-game wearing a sweatshirt, all is well and good, but start to jog (or heaven forbid, sprint) and you will start to overheat ( NOTE; This was why sweatshirts were invented [maybe], for use by athletes to "warm up" [deliberately overheat the muscles] before an activity) It should be more pronounced with heavier clothing that breathes less. .... In conjunction with that above point, metabolism should definitely play a major role in survival, especially with regards to temperature. Spend all day running around, sweating up a storm? You now require more food. Spend all day lazing by the fire at base? You can afford to eat less. Sick? Cold? Scared? Need more food.

    New Temperature System

First of all, I was referring to actual survival, something which has yet to be implemented in Day Z standalone. Being able to build a fire and get cold =/= survival No. To anyone with even an ounce of actual wilderness survival knowledge, it isn't even "fairly" realistic. If it was more realistic, finding clothing wouldn't be a problem whatsoever. There would be PLENTY of vegetable matter to survive off of, from the plants growing in household gardens to hundreds of different plants in the wilderness. Ammunition would also degrade over time, and firearms would require cleaning and maintenance. You would actually die when shot, not run around the corner and bandage with a strip of dirty rag. Morphine wouldn't fix broken legs, nor would a make-shift splint made from said dirty rags and a stick. You wouldn't be able to shove an ammo box (have you seen the size of one of those things?) into your pants. Semi-relatedly, a container of vitamins and a goddamned PEN wouldn't take up the same amount of space as a 30rnd STANAG magazine. You also wouldn't be able to sprint across 230 (or whatever it is) square kilometers of hilly, rugged territory carrying your weight in ammunition, firearm, and killing implements. There are many more points that I can make, but I don't want to take up half the page. Now, many of these points are being addressed (lessened firearm/ammunition spawn, stamina system, more robust medical system, etc), but, AS OF RIGHT NOW, saying that "Day Z standalone is even remotely realistic" is a joke. I actually laugh out loud when people try to say that. It isn't, not by a long shot. Hopefully, it will be.

    New Temperature System

Pretty much. The only real rationale I can think of is the fact that the toxic berries are used as an ornamental bush? I dunno.
  19. Whyherro123

    New Temperature System

Oh no. It was just that the in-game "toxic" berry has the model of a blueberry, AKA a very edible and rather tasty berry. I assumed (using my real-world knowledge) that it would be safe to eat. You all know what happens when you assume.... You die in the woods and people laugh at you for not metagaming!

    New Temperature System

I am not going to sacrifice my precious FPS when I can just alt-tab. Also, best hope you never do anything wrong in the wilds, because the real world is much less forgiving than Day Z. All berries in high amounts are a diuretic, so even if they are safe to eat you STILL could end up sick. Also, if you eat something your body isn't used to, you will throw it up. Finally, I hope you don't plan on subsiding on those cans of peaches and beans for longer than a week, because 1) your stomach will get tired of it after a while and get rid of it (AKA throw it up) and 2) enjoy your nutritional deficiencies! ( AKA hair and teeth falling out, depressed immune system, wounds take longer to heal, etc etc) PS. At least I can spell. LOL
  21. Whyherro123

    New Temperature System

Yes, good job, not all red berries are poisonous. There are strawberries, raspberries, bearberries, cranberries...... All of which are perfectly edible. However, my issue with this is that the devs didn't use any of those berries for the "edible" berry. They went with something that is likely going to kill you if eaten in a RL survival situation. As well as making one of the more edible (and common, where I live) berries in the wild toxic, in the form of the blueberry (apparently, they are supposed to be elderberries, but again, elderberries do not look like blueberries, not by a long shot) It would be nice if they switched this around, as I died earlier in the alpha because I relied on my real-world survival knowledge.
  22. Whyherro123

    New Temperature System

All of that will be fixed. I do believe that there is a Stamina system being worked on. http://dayz-standalone.wikia.com/wiki/Berries How am I wrong? That I said "Holly" instead of "mistletoe"? I apologize, oh great and worthy one.
  23. Whyherro123

    New Temperature System

How so? The fact that the deciduous trees are dropping foliage suggests that it is Autumn. The types of trees growing suggests a "specific ecoclime" of deciduous forest, and the types of crops growing (pumpkins, apples, potatoes, and wheat) cements its latitude. Isn't Chernarus supposed to be located on the Black Sea? Take a look at a map sometime, and you will notice that New England and the Black Sea are essentially on the same latitude. See, there is adding difficulty, then there is just foolishness. It is in Alpha, so I expect the current idiocy that is temperature to be changed into something that is more realistic. Isn't "realism" supposed to be what the Devs are striving for? Because this currently is not realistic. Finally, if you eat the blue berries in Day Z, you get sick and die. The blue berries are GODDAMN BLUEBERRIES, AKA the few berries that are perfectly safe to eat! If you look at the model, the berries have a "crown" on the bottom, which is a real-life indicator of their edibility. They are called "King Berries" because of this. ( The Day Z wiki labels them "sambucus" AKA elderberries, but that is not what an eldeberry looks like...) If you eat the red berries, you are fine. The red berries are HOLLY BERRIES, AKA toxic. If you eat them, you will get truly horrendous diarrhea and vomiting episodes.
  24. Whyherro123

    New Temperature System

It ISN'T sub-zero in Chernarus. Most likely, it is mid-October in-game (based upon the colors of the foliage, availability of crops, etc). Now, Chernarus and where I live (new England) are on a similar latitude, with similar environments (ocean right next door to moderate temp). Want to know what I wear during the day in October? A long-sleeved shirt (think the "Green Checked Shirt" in-game) a pair of pants, and a sweatshirt if it is particularly windy. And even this can get a little warm if the sun is directly on me. Now, I enjoy the fact that there is hypothermia in-game, but the level of clothing you need to wear is pretty ridiculous. Again, similar environments and temperatures to wear I live, and I don't have to wear down-insulated jackets until JANUARY, AKA deep into winter. Until then, I can rather comfortably get by with wool coats, gloves, scarves and a hat, even if there is snow on the ground. I am of the personal opinion that your "degree of healthiness" should have a severe effect on how warm you are, and how fast the weather affects you. IRL, if you are well-fed, rested and hydrated, it is relatively easy to maintain homeostasis (AKA wear a sweatshirt and a hat). If you are tired, sick, hungry, etc, it becomes progressively more difficult to maintain homeostasis ( AKA need more and more clothing) But this current level of "go outside and die" is rather stupid. Ask someone with actual pertinent survival knowledge next time. This is on the same level of foolishness as making the RL "good" berries poisonous, and the RL "toxic" berries good to eat.

    Crossbows being ignored?

How? How would they work? Anything strong enough to blow a hole in a wall would be too heavy and unaerodynamic to attach to a bolt.
