Why not? They are pretty much normal people. In anything, they should be faster than you when you are fully geared, as they are not the ones carrying 60+ pounds of equipment!

That is just fucking depressing. SO MUCH OPEN SPACE, and everyone just YOLO-dies in the cities. I spent 2 hours today just walking around Chernarus, looking at the scenery. Day Z has some goddamn BEAUTIFUL views, if you take the time to look.

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.
Whyherro123 replied to Ham_Sandwich27's topic in General Discussion
Yes, you can "live" for about 3 weeks before you die. At that point, you will be almost a useless lump of flesh from degradation and malnutrition. You will be alive, but you most certainly be not OK. Your muscles will not repair damage, wounds will take longer and longer to heal, your immune system will shit the bed, and your mental facilities will become slower and slower, as will your reaction times. Seriously, did you not read my post? In an honest-to-goodness survival situation, you should be eating more than you usually would. Survival is very stressful on the body, and stress often can make your metabolism kick into overdrive. However, starvation is really not the killer in a survival situation: dehydration is. 3 days without water, and you are dead. This is laying around all day, moving as little as possible. Go for a few hours without drinking anything, alongside strenuous activity and stress, and tell me how you feel. You are going to feel like complete and utter shit. I hope dehydration and "clean water sources" becomes more of an issue in the future, because if you can't find water right now, just quit the goddamn game. Almost every settlement has a well (maybe more!), and even if you spawn in the middle of nowhere, you can still drink from the 10000s of streams and ponds around Chernarus. If you can't find a stream, head downhill, and check the sides of roads. -
People who like to point out the "stealth" aspects of the Ballistic Knife seem to forget that people have an absurd tendency to, -ahem-, scream like hell when stabbed. So, take a knife (good), make it reeaaalllly unbalanced for CQC (bad), and make it into a short (AKA stabbing range) range, un-aerodynamic, inaccurate weapon ( stupidly bad). Seems like people will want something, no matter how impractical, so long as it has "Soviet" or "Russian" in front of it. Guess they won the Cold War after all.....

Sudden instant death and player Hit Points

Not.....really. You do heal, as in "stop bleeding", but you suffer from nerve and muscle damage for the rest if your life. -
Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

Oh for Christ's sake. I am not going to get into a discussion about swords (especially katanas), but.... NO. You are probably getting confused with Katana's being tested on captives and dead bodies, via decapitation AKA striking a braced, immovable target in between the vertebra. Which means such a strike would be next to impossible in a real combat situation. And, katana's were only really effective via a draw-cut, AKA useful in duels, not so useful in actual combat. Not going to bring up how most Japanese iron (and steel, when they had it, which was RARE) was notable (by actual historians) as being really, REALLY shitty. Many swords would break when used in combat, whichhhh is why the most common weapons used in Japanese combat were the spear and the bow (just like literally EVERY OTHER CULTURE). ANd how most warriors would ACTIVELY AVOID striking bone, as the edge of a sword or axe would chip, and combat-worthy weapons were expensive as all hell. ....Looks like I brought up swords and katana's, huh? Sorry, I get more than a little worked up about sword (and especially katana) fanboyism. -

If they were constantly under an adrenaline rush, they would be dead in minutes, either from a heart attack or from the muscles tearing themselves apart and causing internal bleeding. (look up some effects. Nasty stuff) Your body isn't designed to constantly MAIM TEAR KILL ADRENALINE RUUUSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH 24/7. -

I was referring to your referring to beans (and other canned food) being an arbitrarily "better" food source because it (right now) is easier to find, easier to "get" (open, etc, requiring only 1 tool vs hunting requiring 3), as well as taking up less space. It is the same type of thinking that arbitrarily assigns weapons into "tiers". I dislike it on general principle, and view that is removes the "game" from "video/tabletop" game. Did I quote you by mistake? I have no problem with charcoal tabs treating sickness. Hell, I've done it after eating some bad foraged berries (only eat it if you know what it is, kids!). Powdered charcoal from my fire, mixed with water, downed the lot. Threw up EVERYTHING in my stomach, and neutralized whatever I ate that remained in my digestive tract. -

Do me a favor. Take a nice cleaver, get a decent beef bone, and hack through that thing. See how much force and how long it takes you. Now, compare and contrast to an actual living target. Dry and Brittle vs. Living (actually pretty "spongy")Braced on a non-movable surface vs. free-movingnot moving vs. actively trying not to get hit (AKA moving AWAY from the strike)Directly hitting the bone vs. cutting through flesh first (adds resistance) In real life, weapons like swords and axes did not hack off limbs or heads with any sort of frequency. Human bone is actually pretty resistant, and you pretty much have to nail the joint (elbow, shoulder) to have any real chance of "cutting through it" (AKA not even cutting bone, but cartilage and tendons). And, when dealing blunt damage (AKA applying a hammer to someone's face), the overwhelming majority of damage is done internally, AKA you aren't going to see much "on the outside". A hammer applied to the temple will literally destroy the brain via concussive force, but they might have some blood, a cracked skull, and a small dent to show externally. -
That could work, and be very awesome. Imagine having a "mechanic" skill, and being able to repair vehicles, or "surgery" skills. It would add value to our characters.

Mate, I am playing on a Vilayer-persistence server, and food is god-damn EVERYWHERE. Spawned in Novo, ran about for a bit (got hydrated and full in Novo), then ran to Severograd and proceeded to loot the place dry. GET.OFF.THE.COAST -

Dat metagame, bro.... Hopefully, there will be MUCH less canned food in future builds -
I've always thought it was a good idea to "remove" many of the wells from the overworld map, as well as making "natural" water sources contaminated, and undrinkable without being treated. With fewer wells; 1) survival would be more difficult. Sure, you could always treat your own water, but that takes time, either through boiling, filtering, or chemical treatment, and you would have to have the necessary materials at hand. 2) There would actually be a reason for PvP. With fewer wells, this would give those locations VALUE. Clans could take and control the area around the wells, and "charge" (through barter) for usage of the well. Other clans could try to take over the source of income, and certain enterprising players could become travelling water merchants. Just think of the possibilities! I've always wanted a more "persistent" world, to the extent of even locking players to one server (able to choose when making a character, so you could play with friends). This would add some RP-value to the game. Ever hear of the Mad Marksman of Severograd, who fires at anyone trying to invade his home? The Slavers of Svetlojarsk, that capture survivors (or buy them from bandits, giving a reason to carry cuffs and sacks) to work on their food plantations? (When agriculture is added, I am TOTALLY going to become a slaver lord). The Turovo Freeholds, a loose federation of farmers that raise organized militia forces against the nearby slavers? Or, above and beyond them all, the Rangers, those brave souls that infiltrate the Dead Cities of Cherno and Elektro, in order to search for the remnants of the world gone by in return for goods? *Examples totally and shamelessly stolen from someone else

1) There is little benefit to grouping up, besides advantages in PvP (which most players involved in will already be grouped up, and on TS) 2) There is no "punishment" for arbitrarily killing other people. If the standalone was more realistic, there would be farming/trading communities either forming or already formed. Being a bandit would preclude trading with those groups, and you would soon starve to death, or run out of supplies. In Day Z, there is no community, and supplies are essentially limitless (server hopping).

IMO, I view in-game time as being "compressed" AKA 4ish hours of daylight and 4ish hours of night is an in-game "day". It makes sense concerning the distances we are travelling. -
I've climbed mountains during the dead of winter with little more than wool pants, a wool sweater, gloves and a cap. I was overheating. WOOL IS BEST CLOTH

As a Wilderness Survival instructor, I might be able to weigh in on some of your points: 1) Yes, you can go a significant time without food. HOWEVER, that does not mean you will "be fine" without it. A good rule of thumb is the "Rule of Threes", so in this case, the average male in average shape would be able to live three weeks without food. This is without unnecessary metabolic function, AKA when you are laying around sleeping most of the time (AKA what you are supposed to do in WS) And this is just "staying alive. At the end of those three weeks, you are going to be seriously fucked up. a) If going without food, your body will start to deteriorate, often in ways you might not expect. Your immune system will become depressed, leading to longer wound healing times and increased rates of infection. You will become tired and lethargic almost all the time, and have slower reaction times, etc etc etc. It isn't " Wow, I am really fucking hungry". b ) In-game, we are likely burning a SHIT-TON of energy. Look at how hilly Chernarus is, and how fast most players move. It is Autumn (AKA reasonably cold), so your body will be "running hotter" (AKA increased basal metabolic rate) just to maintain homeostasis. Now look at what we are eating. Mainly packaged foods, high in carbs, not necessarily in fats. In a survival situation, you need those fats to keep warm. I keep servings of peanut butter in my kit for emergencies. 5000 kCal of tasty goodness. c) In-game, we are most likely scared to death. Think about it: you are getting attacked by infected-not-zombies, crazy ass-bandits, and can barely even trust that guy you just met. Our character's adrenal "fight or flight" reflex might near-constantly be triggered, leading to a higher metabolic rate. While I agree that you shouldn't have to eat a can of beans every half hour (do that, then jog around with a pack on. Enjoy your "second serving" of beans), I like how the metabolic system works. It makes sense, based on my experience and knowledge of the field.- 210 replies

So are rocket launchers going to be added soon?
Whyherro123 replied to TheWizard14's topic in General Discussion
Very true. ( I still bring up the point that we have used mortars for centuries, using nothing more than a map and some knowledge of physics/trigonometry, but I digress) I, in fact, would rather not have either. Mainly due to the lack of ammunition (on one server, however, more on that below) and the complete and total lack of balance that it would bring. We already have had (and probably still have) people/clans server-hopping and duping for grenades, flashbangs, hell, even 75 round AKM drums at one point. If a clan dedicates enough time to exploit their way to XXX-amount of ammunition, then that form of "balance" is moot. Better not drive anything on one of their servers, ever! And, I believe that "everyone" should have the same chance to gain gear. If one clan hordes all of the mortar ammunition/rockets, what else can the other players do to combat that? Can't use vehicles to search for their storage. Essentially, can't use a vehicle, period. Why waste the time building one if it can just get blown up and there is jack-shit I can do in retaliation? At least with small arms, you can still fire back somewhat effectively. Get blown up in a vehicle via RPG, you are done. -

Why would you use an RPG against zombies, when it has been stated MULTIPLE TIMES that RPGS do jack-shit against infantry? What uses do you have for an RPG against zombies? Blow them up? Enjoy wasting your one rocket. You claimed earlier that RPGs could be used against enemy clans: what can a RPG do that a mortar can't do better? Range? Lethality? Rate of Fire? Practicality? The mortar wins 99% of the time. Mortars don't require a C&C center, they require 4 guys: the mortar team and the Forward Observer (guy with a map). FO calls coordinates over radio, MT plugs them in and fires away. FO relays firing corrections. Bing, Bang, BOOM. -

I am....99% certain that that is SUPER illegal, as well as being Darwin-Award-worthy stupid. Or it is inactive, and he is just pulling one over on you. -

Whyherro123 replied to TheWizard14's topic in General Discussion
What. WHAT. You want to have a rocket launcher AKA probably the LEAST useful infantry-portable weapon against infantry, but not a mortar, probably the SECOND most-useful infantry-portable weapon against infantry? That....makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever. The M224 60mm mortar has an effective range of about 3.5 KILOMETERS, and weighs a little less than 50 pounds. It has a sustained fire rate of 20 rounds / minute AKA 1 round every 3 SECONDS. Versus, what? 1 Rocket? What would you choose when (let us say Cherno is zombified) 5000+ zombies are charging your FOB, screaming for blood? A RPG is NOT for anti-infantry (read: human soldiers) attacks, it is an anti-vehicle weapon, and for destroying hardened/fortified positions. A mortar can destroy vehicles, hardened positions, infantry, that important road crossing 1 kilometer back, drop some smoke on the town for cover for your clan, wipe out that enemy convoy, and threaten anyone crossing that bridge. Pretty much at the same time. They require training, yes, but so do RPGS. And the mortar usually has a handy-dandy trigonometry plate on it for figuring out charges/angles. That, coupled with a FO, can spell top-down DEATH FROM THE SKY for anything you need dead. Mortars > RPGS all week, including Sunday, in my book. -

What, exactly, are you going to be taking out with a goddamned RPG? Any "soft-skinned" (AKA not armor-plated, like a IFV/CFV, or a tank) vehicle can and will be stopped by either shooting out the tires or by shooting the engine block. Why waste the rocket on a hardened position when a bullet/grenade can take out the guys inside? Most modern IFV/CAV/MBT's are almost completely immune to most RPGs, especially the 50 year-old-or-so models posted above. Most anti-armor capability in modern combat comes from top-strike launchers (like mortars and Javelins), or air-support (helicopters AKA Gods Gift to the Infantryman, or a Predator Missile). Hell, an M1 Abrams is essentially immune to its own main gun. There was a story about an M1 being mission-killed and apparently irretrievable. The tankers tried to blow up the tank with another Abrams, and it didn't work. They had to go in and detonate the tank from the inside with carried charges places into the ammo stowage. If anything, we should get mortars. Infantry portable and at least somewhat useful. I can find 1000 and 1 uses for a mortar, and only a few for an RPG. -
Just wait until very little canned food spawns, or most standing surface water (streams included!) sources are not safe unless treated. You will carry what food and drinks you find, and carry a container of clean water with you. When dirty bandages cause minor wounds to develop into debilitating infections, and painkillers take the edge off the shock, and removes trembling. When running down a hill causes you to fall and twist your ankle, making ankle wraps a necessity ( and good boots even more so). When hypothermia is actually TERRIFYING (AKA uncontrollable trembling, can't use hands, etc), and is eminently possible, even during the summer. When the devs remove this utterly pant-on-head stupidity that is "carrying a fireplace, logs and all, in your backpack" When disgusting meta-gaming ceases, or at the very least, is minimized. When they make survival the end-game, not just something to be concerned about as I gear up to PvP, then I will be content. Cant Wait!

Probably, if this were to be a "realistic" game. It is the "standard" caliber used by what I am assuming to be the service rifle and LMG of the Chernarus Defense Force (if not, please enlighten me). There should be literal stockpiles of this stuff, chest high. However, Day Z is far from realistic. There is fresh crops sitting in the fields, waiting to be harvested, tropical fruit sitting out on shelves, rusted hunks of cars sitting in the streets, and you wash up on the beach in Autumn with nothing more than a (working, mind you) flashlight. The game is rather schizophrenic when it comes to "timeline of the apocalypse". It could be anywhere between 1 week (most likely) and a couple of months (not likely, in my mind) after the SHTF.
