What do you think about realism in DayZ?

I don't know about you, but when it gets dark, I go to sleep. In real life, there is absolutely no reason I can think of to go blundering about in the dark. The risks far outweigh the rewards. Same thing stands for Day Z; I can't think of something to do during the night that I can do during the day, when I am not handicapped by the dark. Gamma-abusing is for cheaters, and I'm not a fan of being defenseless with a flashlight. I hold the opinion that if you "break a limb" in Day Z, you should just die. It is both far more realistic in the medical sense (break a leg in the backcountry, with no help coming, and no splint in the world will save you. The marrow will either get infected, cut you up on the inside, or you will get bone fragments in your bloodstream and die a VERY painful death from internal hemorrhaging.) and in the logical sense (morphine is a pain killer. Thats.....that it. It doesn't cause any actual healing. And a shitty splint made of rags and some sticks will not let you walk on a broken leg. It will just immobilize the limb, and not even provide any traction at that. [so, really, using the splints in-game would cause actual damage to a healing bone]) Don't want a broken bone? Simple, don't run when you can walk, don't climb over things when not necessary (fences, walls, etc), wear footwear with proper supports, don't put yourself in a position where you can get shot in the legs, etc. Granted, this means the Devs will have to fix all of the "leg-breaking" glitches, but whatever, a man can dream... I've touched on the " food and drink" aspect in another thread (http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/213246-eating-and-drinking-system-please-just-give-it-up/), so I'll just summarize it here: yes, it takes a few weeks and days to die from starvation and dehydration. But, up until you expire, you will not be peachy keen. When you finally die, you will be a half-crazy lump of wasted flesh. I give you the backpack thing, and that has always been a pet-peeve of mine. I can carry a weeks worth of gear (clothes, food, water, equipment, bedding, etc) on my person and in an Assault Pack. Why does a box of matches take up the same space as half a STANAG magazine? -sigh- But....balance, I suppose? I've always wanted a "faster" day-night span of time. It makes sense considering the distances we travel, and would actually make us play at day and at night. Since Day Z is set in Autumn, have DAY be 3 hours and NIGHT be 4. That way, you can't run from Solninchny to Cherno in "3 hours", now it will take you nearly a "whole day", which is much more realistic.
  2. Or, you could attach a sling to your weapon. Boom, never lose it. Paint your weapon stupid colors, and enjoy your death as opponents scope you out from that bush far, FAR farther away than if you used a more sensible coloration. I dislike this for the same reason I dislike people running around with no pants: it is foolish, immature, and looks bad on the playerbase. Do you want to play a hardcore survival game set after the SHTF, or do you want to play a game where pantsless yahoos run around with bright pink firearms, playing music over gamechat as they murder anyone they find? just my opinion.
  3. That is stupid. They use different types of fuel.
  4. Where are you going to find the 200+ rounds for a single belt of GPMG ammunition? And, who says the helicopters that "might" be in-game will even have armament? From what I've read, they might end up being small, 2 person civilian helicopters. Good god, I hate helicopters in Day Z. As soon as a clan gets one, the server is under their thumb.

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.

In that case, the newspawn goes to the closest settlement and asks for work. "Sure, you can cut firewood/pick crops/operate this lathe for XXX credits/goods/yadda yadda yadda per hour/per unit produced", says the overseer. Newspawn works for pay, gets enough money/good/credits to pay for supplies, and signs onto a merchant caravan as a guard. He saves the money he makes from this job (as well as the money he makes from selling dead bandit's equipment), and buys his own caravan. Since he worked with the clan producing X, they give him good prices on their stock. He roams Chernarus, selling his goods and making a tidy profit. Boom, freshspawn to entrepreneur. Don't think it is possible? Look at EVE. People spend DAYS sitting there mining ore, all for a corporation (clan in EVE). Eventually, they make enough cash to buy a bigger ship, then a bigger one, eventually becoming a major player in their Corp. If EVE can do it, so can Day Z (technically)

    Bipod and Mosin

Doesn't change the mechanical accuracy of the rifle. We are using the "base" version, AKA the infantry rifle that is known for reliability, ruggedness, and not for pinpoint accuracy.

Mate, I am pretty sure I can eat a pigeon, some green beans, and a potato or two and be good for a while. It is called "forage as you go". See an edible plant, pick it an eat it. See a rabbit or pigeon, kill it and save it for later. If you eat all the pumpkins in a garden, you probably won't be hungry.

Pretty much. From this thread, I am getting the feeling like people want to be able to PvP without worrying about surviving. "Canned food shouldn't be hard to find!""Why am I so cold?!" etc. PvP should feasibly be the end game. It signifies that you have progressed beyond hand-to-mouth existence, and start looking outward, for control of the environment, to start to rebuild society, etc. Look at it from a realistic aspect: not everyone would be able to afford to go fight that clan of bandits. Instead, a group of farmers sponsors a group of soldiers, paying them (in food, fuel, etc) for protection. Eventually, if a farmer saves up enough bartering material, they can trade for a gun and some ammunition, and join the soldiers. Unfortunately, I never see that happening. Too many people focus on the KILLING, not the SURVIVING. Too much "run to the closest gun spawn:, not enough "how am I going to survive till tomorrow". In my perfect Day Z, loot wouldn't respawn. Eventually, the only gear would come from what you grow, what you make, etc. (food is grown on farms/taken from animals, clothing is patched together from old pieces/woven from new cloth, bullets and firearms are made in small shops, etc). This, by its very nature, would cause people to bunch together in support of industry and agriculture. PvP would be organized, and over resources, like fuel depots, industrial parts, etc etc, not merely for the "hell of it".
  9. Because it is fucking stupid, mate. This is supposed to be a "serious, mature game", using your own words? Tell me, why would you paint a rifle gold or bright pink if it were supposed to be serious? It detracts from my experience when you want to act like an immature jerkoff. And, nice ad-hominem. You really like to use them, huh? How old are you again?

    Bipod and Mosin

The Mosin 91/30 isn't a sniper rifle. It is a battle rifle over 80 years old, itself based on a design from 120 years ago. And, in real life, it cannot mount optics without modification. It also is notably inaccurate (or, more correctly, "not that accurate", like all combat rifles of the period). There is a "sniper rifle" (for the given definition of "rifle used at range") in-game, it just can't mount optics for some ass-backwards reason; the CR527. Fix that, and you will have a "sniper rifle". I really can't wait for jamming to be implemented

well, with pigeons, I was referring to cities. In my home city, I can walk right up to one. With a rock or a club in hand, I would have a meal. As for corn or potatoes, you boil them? That is how they are cooked, pretty much, and have been for thousands of years. Plus, you get boiled water for drinking. I don't really see the issue. Survival take work? OH NO
  12. Whyherro123

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.

Potatoes, corn, pumpkins, beans, peas. People live off of just those nowadays. Couple those with some animal protein in the form of pigeons (super easy to find and kill) or rabbits, and you will be just as good afterwards as you would eating those two cans of beans.
  13. Whyherro123

    Bipod and Mosin

They should, in all respects. 91/30 Mosin-Nagants lack the necessary furniture to mount such scopes and bipods. If anything, a Mosin should be "Survivors First Rifle", what with its inherent reliablity and inaccuracy, coupled with ALL THE AMMUNITION that should be found. I really dislike how the 91/30 is treated like the "go-to sniper rifle". If anything, the CR527 should be the "Sniper Rifle" of the game. The CZ527 (real life counterpart) is known for its accuracy and reliability, which the 91/30....isn't. Plus, the CR527 can easily mount scopes and such.

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.

I am all for making "canned food" (rice, beans, spaghetti, etc) really SUPER SCARE, if they make other sources of food more prevalent to match. How many homes in Chernarus have gardens? If you could pick fruits and vegetables from them, you wouldn't need the canned food from cities. If you could find plants in the wild, you wouldn't need to risk urban exposure. If you could trap small animals, like rabbits, squirrels, and birds, etc etc etc you would be set for a while. A deer or a cow should be a HUMONGOUS kill (as they are in real life), and you probably won't be able to eat it all on your own. You could smoke the meat to save it for later, trade it with others, etc.

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

Nope, look closer. They are "merely" bleeding from the tear ducts, nose, etc, as well as having bloody/bloodshot eyes. I see no necrosis. Look, this guy even has facial hair coming in!
  16. Whyherro123

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

I've asked numerous times for him to explore an actual rationale for including dismembering and gore into the game. He tried to bring up disease transmission and water poisoning, but I disproved it. That pretty much just leaves him with "aesthetics" as his rationale.
  17. Whyherro123

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.

True. However, once you get to the point where your body starts to autocannibalize, you are really fucked. Autocannibalism of muscle tissues only occurs after the body has pretty much expended all other viable fuel sources it has, and protein taken from muscle tissue will not recoup any losses due to starvation, just keep you "alive" (while damaging you even more)
  18. Whyherro123

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

So, no real reason beyond aesthetics, then? Gotcha, no real reason at all. ":Aesthetics" is a personal choice, AKA an OPINION. And you know what is said about an opinion. At least I back up my opinion with observations on reality. If the waterhole has corpses in it, I would move on to the next one. If not able to, I would boil the shit out of any water taken from it, then filter it. Making water safe to drink isn't all that difficult, guys. It just requires a little work. I have yet to understand why people think adding dead bodies and fecal material to water sources is an effective means to deny that source to anyone. It worked in the past because the other parties lacked other water sources (ie, poisoning a town well via dead cattle in the Middle AGes, etc). In Chernarus, there are pretty much 1000s of water sources to choose from, and if you aren't at least treating it superficially, you deserve to die shitting your brains out.

And? Still debilitating. You kinda need those.

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

ANNNNNDDD here we go with the ad-hominem attacks. 1) The engine is not meant for that type of wound-portrayal. The Standalone engine is a more-developed version of the ARMA II engine, something that both 1) came out in 2009 (AKA a dinosaur in computer years) and 2) was not "meant" to show that type of injury. 2) Again, why is it necessary? Answer the damn question, because the response you gave above doesn't cut it. Give us an actual reason for including gore, instead of "Aw3sum and R3alistik" (which it isn't on both counts). WHAT.DOES.IT.ADD? 3) Graphics limitations. Adding literally tens of thousands of bodies to the game world will drag my computer to the ground, and I have a $1400 rig. Adding overly complicated gore mechanics will do the same. Hell, the game is already un-optimized as it is (many MANY places suffer from severe framerate drops and other graphical issues when entering cities, where presumably you will be placing all of these bodies.) Do you want your computer to melt?

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

Same question I asked. The answer is "yes", pretty much. IMO, Day Z is already pretty "mature". It deals with the "end of the world", society-ending diseases, and just how horrible people can be to each other when there is nothing in their way (double meaning: both in real life, and in-game with KoS). Those sound like.....pretty mature themes to me. Something doesn't have to be "bloody and gory" to be mature.

Eating and drinking system - Please, just give it up.

The thing is, you have no idea what shape your character was in before washing up on the beach. For all we know, it has been 2 weeks since your last meal, and you are on your last legs when you spawn into the game the first time. Same thing about found food: we actually have no idea about how long it has been since the collapse of society, corresponding to the amount of packaged food we will find. Most supermarkets only stock about 3 or so days of supply, so if it has even been only a week, guess what? Coupled with the total shitshow of looting that follows a TSC, there would be little premade food left. Fruits and vegetables would have rotted by then as well.
  23. Whyherro123

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

Even the near-constant KoS can be viewed as a source of terror, if examined from the right angle. Look at it from the view of your character: very few people survived the fall of society. Of those that did, the majority now go around, murdering everyone they find. No communication, no remorse, just a bullet to the brain. Why? You don't know. The only thing you do know....is thet you are being hunted. Being hunted is one of the "primal fears", AKA one fear that EVERYONE can understand. As an aside, it has only been VERY recently that horror has come to the forefront of "fear". Hell, Stephen King, probably one of the best "fear" authors of the last century, HATES horror. He views it as a "shock value" tactic, and views "revulsion" (AKA gore and disgusting things) as cheap. He still uses them, of course, but far prefers to catch the reader with terror first and horror second.
  24. Whyherro123

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

Really? That is just your opinion. Take a walk around one of the larger cities. The quote " 50,000 people used to live in this city. Now it is a ghost town" comes to mind almost immediately. If you aren't at least unnerved by isolation, call the Government right away, because you are a one-of-a-kind person! And this is without taking the zombies or bandits into effect. Think about your friends, family and neighbors. Now, they are out for your blood, and you literally cannot trust almost anybody. How does that make you feel? Feel anything when you are looting, and a door opens nearby? Plenty of people do, even on this forum. Or, hell, how about the environment? Imagine if you couldn't magically repair broken limbs with morphine or a splint... breaking a limb would be horrifying, as no-one would be coming to help. You would be stuck there until you starved/froze/died from dehydration. Please, learn the difference between "horror" and "terror". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_and_terror They describe different things: I prefer terror, and you apparently prefer horror. I find over-the-top attempts at horror (which gore is a classical, amateurish example of) rather foolish, and not frightening at all. ( I LAUGH at the SAW movies, for reference) YMMV
  25. Whyherro123

Are we going to get dismemberment/gore?

None of the weapons currently in-game have the firepower to blast people into chunks, Fallout 3 style. Put a large wound channel into someone, knock them flat dead on their ass, yes. But not dismember with a single shot. I've already touched on how dismembering with melee weapons is both unrealistic and rather difficult. So, asides from "This Gaem shud be GORY AND BLODY becauz AW3SUM3!", what would dismemberment and gore add to the game, asides from taking away from authenticity and adding to computing strain? Name literally one aspect of the game that would be improved, and I will debate the point with you. So far, it seems like you just want Gorn for Gorn's sake, which is inherently childish, IMHO. Fear and terror doesn't have to be "BLOOD AND GORE EVERYWHERRRREEEEEE". I find the current atmosphere in-game quite frightening enough as-is, what with the themes of isolation and all.
