    DayZ Lack of Social Realism

Not.....really. The modern world is easily the "most peaceful" the world has ever been, with the amount of "war-related deaths" at the lowest point of recorded history. (Look it up) See that thing I mentioned earlier, "endemic warfare"? Nigh-constant low-level skirmishes, non-stop since 40,000 years ago. Only recently (in the last 300 years), has warfare been organized and a clash of nation-states (which actually limits casualties, especially "civilian" ones) instead of civilian-soldiers murdering members of an opposing tribe/region/group. Native American tribes? constant endemic warfare. Europeans only really added firearms to the mix. Medieval Europe? constant endemic warfare. Classical Mediterranean? constant endemic and state warfare. Neolithic farming villages? constant endemic warfare.

This, pretty much. Bandit: Give me all your stuff! Guy: Yeah, yeah, take it! Just don't kill me! Bandit: Yeah right! -shoots- LOL --time passes-- Group: Hey, you see a guy pass through here recently? Bandit: Yeah, what about him? Group: Well, he was one of our guys. Since you are the only people here, we are gonna have a problem. -hangs bandit clan from the streetposts, bandit problem dealt with-

    DayZ Lack of Social Realism

I think it is a good measure of personal character to see just how an individual thinks about what would happen if there were no laws to stop them, as well as how they view the world. Somebody thinks the world is ready to explode into violence and depravity the second people get the chance? Maybe they might just join in. Pessimist Somebody thinks that people would help each other when they really needed it? Probably would stay true to their word. Optimist.

    DayZ Lack of Social Realism

Did I say that the apocalypse would be made of rainbows and kittens? No. It just wouldn't be all "burning the churches and defiling the women" that people on this board make it out to be. Most people wouldn't die from violence. They would instead die from starvation (or, more likely, malnutrition, and the diseases that arise from malnutrition), as well as the reemergence of communicable diseases. People would group up, almost immediately. There would be few-to-no "lone wolves", of the sort we have in Day Z, as they would have no support to draw off of, and would die out first. These groups would be extremely close-knit, and treat outsiders with suspicion. Look up "endemic warfare", as it is the closest source of "realistic PvP" that a real-life situation would be. There wouldn't be any "wars of annihilation": the post-collapse societies wouldn't have the werewithal (resources, desire) or number of warriors to wage such battles. Cattle raids, stealing/burning crops, and slave raids would be far more common. People also have a tendency to actually give a shit about each other when the need arises, apparently. Case in point: In New England, we had a bad hurricane hit a couple years back. A lot of places lost power (including my home town), and several people died. For the space of about a week, we were on our own; the State-level emergency response was still holed up in their bunker. People opened their doors to complete strangers, pulling generators in order to power refrigerators and wells, houses with wood stoves cooked hot meals for the neighborhood, people with tools cleared the downed trees out of the roads, and used personal vehicles to bring injured neighbors to hospitals when the EMT's couldn't get through. We actually had several cases of groups breaking into houses in order to check on the elderly, who had lost power and fallen down in houses with no heat or light.

http://www.cracked.com/article_21251_5-things-every-movie-gets-wrong-about-apocalypse.html Incorrect. Whatever chaos you mention would be over relatively quickly.

    Why all the judgement?

Actually..... we have actually no idea about what would happen in the total collapse of society, because it has literally never happened in the 40,000+ years of human civilization. Yep, not once. (A pretty good track record, if I must say) However, we can make a rather (highly) educated guess. The study of sociology and psychology have found that the overwhelming majority of human beings desire safety, community, and well, rather "boring" lives, for lack of a better term. Apparently, we prefer to live as comfortably as possible, with few upsets. So, in the event of a total societal collapse (TSC), scientists estimate that people are far, FAR more likely to band together in tight-knit groups, usually made up of people who knew each other before the TSC (extended familial groups, or neighborhoods in the city), rather than degenerate into rabid animals, wandering and killing anyone not us. Think "tribes" or "clans", and you would have the right idea. In actuality, "lone wolves" would likely be the first ones to die off, as they have no-one to turn to if things go south (injury, no food, etc), nor can they be trusted as trading partners. http://www.cracked.com/article_21251_5-things-every-movie-gets-wrong-about-apocalypse.html (Yes, a comedy website, but it links to reputable sources) Not saying that there wouldn't be violence, but it wouldn't be the mindless sort we see in Day Z. It would most likely be along the lines of "endemic warfare" (look it up), or highly ritualized duels. A post-TSC society wouldn't be able to sustain itself with wars of extermination. Day Z is much the same; take out the re spawn mechanic (AKA look at Day Z from a "real world" POV), and the entire server would be empty in hours.

    I hate bambi

Simple: it is never going to be solved. Not so long as there is no penalty to death. Add in a 30 minute respawn timer, or a 30-minute-can't-respawn-on-same-server-timer (better, in my opinion), and ALL players, not just gear-hungry bambi's, will be much less blase about death. Granted, then people would complain, but, hey, "permadeath" right? I brought up KoS to label how the actions that cause the bambi's to run up and try to punch you out are also unrealistic, just to point out the hypocrisy of "complain about bambi's punching you out, while shooting everything you see". I can stop, if you would like.
  8. A Welrod is a bolt-action suppressed handgun, for use in WW2. An Amphibia is a semi-automatic .22LR target handgun, fed by a spring-loaded magazine. Just because two guns look slightly the same (and the Welrod and the Amphibia TOTALLY look like two peas in a pod, right? /sarcasm), doesn't mean they ARE the same. By that line of thinking, the FNX, CR75, and M1911 are all the same thing, cause they look slightly the same! Right?! -Meant for the other guy-

-sigh- I ask, how is my argument non-relevant and far-fetched? At least give me a rationale for the insults. You said bambi's running up going "fists of fury" is unrealistic, I countered with "KoS is also unrealistic", and offered proof in the form of sociological and psychological studies... My arguments get called "irrelevant and far-fetched." What? Neither are going to change, or be stopped in any shape or form, unless some form of "death timer" is implemented. Both are inherently unrealistic, so you can't really complain about one while upholding the other. That is what I meant.

Does anyone dislike the "no military stuff" agrument?

Pretty much. How many people lived in Chernarus before the outbreak? They probably had the same thoughts as we did: " Raid the police stations and military outposts for weapons! (Not that they probably weren't already trying to get into there). Now, how long has it been since the outbreak? For all we know, that police station could've been scavenged 100x over, and we are picking up the pieces. IRL, if I went into a police station, and found an MP5, even with no ammo, I would take that thing to trade for something else. Hell, I probably would've stripped the place of all usable things; bedding, curtains, scrap metal, broken the glass for tools, etc.

By that line of thinking, KoS is just as unrealistic. Sociological and Psychological studies have proven that killing other humans has a SERIOUS effect on the human psyche (to the extent where we have words for those who aren't able to empathize with others, psychopath and sociopath), and that human beings are FAR more likely to band together in times of need than to randomly kill each other.
  12. There should be. Having nothing more than a sharpened wooden tip, the current "improvised arrows" wouldn't really cause all that much damage (relatively) All they would do is put an arrowshaft-sized hole in people. I would like to see "improved improvised" arrows, with a tip made of sharpened metal (like the ones in the video I posted above), or knapped glass. They create a larger cutting surface, causing more damage. Then composite arrows could be at the top of the list, damage wise (and, probably raw (read: dispersion) accuracy, too, with "final" accuracy being dependent on the user)
  13. Those things are deadly, and look to be very similar to the in-game bows. They make arrowheads out of nails; hammered flat, then into shape, then quenched and sharpened. http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/47143#.VE6tkPnF-30 Currently, the in-game arrows have no heads. They would be very ineffective. I would like to see broadheads made from nails or knapped glass.

HOLY SHITBISQUITS After watching this video, I wouldn't want to be shot even by the in-game "improvised" bow, much less an actual one. The Kenyan tribal warriors make bows very similar to the in-game ones, which apparently are capable of punching arrows into/through the skull. Tell me you would be able to shoulder and fire a rifle after taking one of these to the dome, and I will call you a liar. ( At 2:55, it gets gnarly. The guy survived, apparently)
  15. Whyherro123

    sorry i killed you

People are allowed to feel bad or upset about potentially ruining somebody else's game session, especially if they did it on accident. It's ok, you will develop empathy as you grow older. It tends to be a more "mature" emotion and line of thought, anyways.
  16. Pretty much. It is in reality little more than a bent stick tied off with string. They should (eventually) give you the option to carve down a stick or piece of firewood into an actual bowstave.
  17. Whyherro123

Does anyone dislike the "no military stuff" agrument?

Pretty much. As of right now, there is little to no benefit to building a bow or using a crossbow. In the time it takes you to build a bow and requisite arrows, you can loot a mid-sized town instead and come out with a backpack, "low tier" (I HATE that way of thinking) firearm with some ammunition, warm clothing and enough food and water for a decent amount of time. In my "perfect" Day Z, ammunition would be scarce, to the effect where players with ammunition would hoard it, and people would use melee weapons, bows, etc to defend themselves. That guy with the Mosin up on the hill might have only 4 rounds for it, and a player would take the time to reload shotgun shells and make "wax slugs" to improve his firepower. Of course, there would also be infrastructure added, so by taking the time and putting in effort, a group of people could feasibly make more ammunition. Case in point: In the "recent" govermental/tribal squabbles in Kenya, improvised bows and arrows are being used more and more, due to the fact that firearms are difficult to get, and NOBODY wants to use a melee weapon. They make arrowheads from nails, and apparently are capable of easily killing people. Improvisation at its finest. (Last post) http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/47143#.VE6tkPnF-30

What do you expect? You were running along the coast, decently geared, and he had nothing-to-little to lose attacking you. I like the "30 minute timeout on dying" idea. It adds a little bit of permanence and effect to death. That, or you get locked out of that specific server for 30 minutes.
  19. The revolving shotgun comes to mind. I pretty much never used any weapon other than it, especially with the bayonet : )
  20. Woops, you are correct. I confused the two. Speaking of the Amphibia, has anybody actually seen one recently? I haven't.
  21. Whyherro123

    wtf instant death?

    Loading Mags Animation/Delay

IIRC, the "75 round drum" in-game is actually for the RPK LMG in real life.

    what twitch fuels

    Damn straight.
  24. The CR527 is a modern rifle, produced today The M4A1 is a modern rifle, produced today The Mp-133 is a modern shotgun, produced today The Amphibia 22 is a clone of a Ruger 10/22, not a freaken Welrod pistol. Made (A LOT, they are VERY popular firearms) today The AKM is still produced today, believe it or not. It was replaced as the primary Soviet service arm in 1978 by the AK-74. If you consider 1978 old, then you are probably younger than me, and I was born in '92. GAUREN-FREAKEN-TEE the M1911 in-game is not an original production piece. You do know they are still made today, by literally dozens on firearm companies? The one in-game was referred to be a Kimber Warrior. The Colt Python (Magnum in-game) was last produced in 2005, so....a modern pistol. No idea why they are in-game, as they can be pretty expensive. A Mod 10 makes a little more sense. The FNX-45 is a fictional variant of a real handgun (FNP-45), which was introduced in 2012 The SKS was officially used until the 1970s, and is still being produced today. You can buy a "Bubba'd" SKS in the US for about $150-$300, usually of Chinese manufacture. (although the prices have been rising due to the gun scares) The one in-game is Yugoslavian. So.....not all WW2 firearms? Just because a firearm "started production" a while back doesn't mean this one was. For all we know, the AKM could've fell off the back of a truck a week ago. I called out the 91/30 Nagant and the IZH-43 shotgun as firearms that are known to be used during WW2, and are common specifically because of the MILLIONs made and MILLIONS stockpiled by the Soviets. RESEARCH B4 POSTING LOL
