A new approach to the bandits and heros situation

How do you know? And, why the hell not? (I specifically referring to skills and aptitudes) Skills and aptitudes are realistic, and more importantly, a realistic way to add in-game value to one's character. In real life, everyone can't do the same "things", because of different careers or skills known. I can survive in the woods, trap animals and identify plants pretty well, but I sure as hell can't figure out what a broken car needs to be fixed, nor do I know how to suture up a wound. I can eventually learn these things, though training and reading about them. Skills would add a lot to a character. For example, your clan might own a car, but you would have no idea how to fix it. You might search around for another player with the mechanic skill, or simply find a repair manual, which would let you use the mechanic skill at a reduced rate. Or, you could "apprentice" one of your clan-mates to the mechanic, in order for them to learn "mechanic" over time. Same thing with medicine. "First-Aid" is easy enough to learn (everyone starts with it), but "Advanced Care" and "Treat Disease" are more difficult. One of your guys has an unknown disease he got from a poorly-treated wound (Blood Infection from an open cut, etc), and you can't really help him besides throwing antibiotics at it. However, you know a travelling doctor comes through here once a week, and you just need him to stay alive for the next few days. Doctor comes by, and you barter some goods for a diagnosis and treatment. You also apprentice one of your new recruits to the doctor (paying his "apprentice fee" with more goods) in order for him to learn the basics of medicine, and to bring it back to the clan. As players get more proficient in their skills (through practice and through reading, which would be an awesome use for some new books), they get more and more "valuable". For example, your recruit comes back, trained in medicine and such, to the point where other players come to your clans' compound in order to barter for treatment. You charge them a "doctor's fee" in goods, in order to see him. Other clans could try to kidnap him for their own ends, or assassinate him to deprive you. Once you die, you lose all skills and experience, and start over with "Basic First Aid", and one other "Beginner Skill". This would, in turn, add a lot of verisimilitude to freshspawns. Now, instead of cuffing them and beating them up for shits and giggles, now you can capture them and see what skills they have. -Clan mate: Up against the wall! Now, anyone have any useful skills to share? We like mechanics! -1st Bambi: I.......I have Advanced care! -Clan mate: We already have a doctor. -BLAM- Anybody else? -2nd Bambi: I can repair trucks and tractors (LYING) -Clan mate: Awesome, up against the other wall. Anybody else? -Other Bambi's: I can X....XXX -Clan mate: Nope -BLAM--BLAM--BLAM- Alright man, we need you to fix this. -2nd Bambi: (Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit) Once they find out he was lying, they could kill him, or he might pull it off and fix it, especially if he finds the repair manual in the glovebox.

    Pets in DayZ?

Yes, it is, mate. Griefing is any action undertaken in a game in order to piss someone off. It doesn't matter if it is part of the game mechanics or not. But that is a discussion for another thread.

    Pets in DayZ?

The only animal that would be "worthwhile" to keep around would be a dog. And how would they make the AI work?
  4. It should take longer. This game is supposed to be realistic, and we are already running long distances, while carrying a lot of gear, at speeds about 30 kilometers per hour (AKA pretty damn fast). Stop running straight to military bases, and take some time to see the scenery. Have you seen some of the views from a mountaintop?
  5. Whyherro123

    Please check the papers :D

I wish the devs would give "written notes" a different model, so we can easily tell the difference between blank paper and a note.

    Small Secret

I sure as hell hope so. Anybody who has made a fire with seasoned wood vs. unseasoned (AKA just cut down a tree, and chopped it up) will know there is a HUGE difference in how fires "behave" (how long they burn, how much heat they put off, how embers are made, etc)

What does "Go your way" mean?

    1) Awesome strawman. 2) Is 15 minutes such a long time where you would be seriously inconvenienced? Get up from the computer, get a drink, use the restroom, stretch a bit. It doesn't have to be 15 minutes. Just a ballpark figure. 3) How is establishing "dying is bad" in a game supposedly based in realism -ahem- "assfucking legit players"? Firstly, what the hell is a "legit player"? I am a "legit player", in the sense that I actually play the game and want it to be all that it can be, namely, a realistic, difficult survival game. Secondly, how exactly are you "assfucked" by the existence of a death timer? -"shit, I died from PvP/zombies/glitch. Now I can take a break from this screen I've been staring at for the last 2 hours. Woe is me." Right now, someone dies (regardless of reasons), and they can get generally get back to their body before it despawns so long as they have more than three braincells to rub together, faster if they have friends strip the body. How is that survival? How is that difficult? Remember when Day Z standalone was branded as the "anti-game"? Death should be a serious setback, not "shit guys, I'll be back in game in 30 seconds....well, I spawned in Solnichny, let me sprint back to my body."

Really Good Idea For Gas Masks (Please Look Dev's)

    Very slowly, and very painfully.

Really Good Idea For Gas Masks (Please Look Dev's)

Pretty much. All a gasmask would do to protect you from radioactive particles (NOT from radiation itself, just contaminated particles, AKA fallout. Very important distinction) is prevent you from 1) inhaling them into your lungs, and 2) prevent them from diffusing through your mucus membranes. Meanwhile, Gamma radiation is giving you some nice tasty tumors up inside you. Radiation =/= fallout, folks.

    Next Vehicle

They should. This is a game that prides itself on "realism" when possible, and "authenticity" when not.
  11. Whyherro123

What does "Go your way" mean?

Uh, yeah? It is alpha (holy shit, I've apparently become an alpha apologizer), you should EXPECT to die from glitches, bugs, and the like. Hell, we aren't really supposed to be playing the game right now, we are technically supposed to be testing the game for.....bugs, glitches and the like. How many people actually report bugs, instead of bitching about them? Also, if the forum turns into a shitstorm because people can't hack "permadeath" or even "death taxes", then they should stop playing. Simple. The mods can clean out the bad posts, and the little kids can grow up a little and realize they are playing a serious game. Poor babies! My heart weeps....... /sarcasm. Maybe next time, they won't be so rash, and make foolish mistakes that get them killed. If they got killed via bug, see above Explain why? People throw about phrases like "permadeath" and "authentic" on this forum like they actually mean something, yet once ideas get put forth to actually implement mechanics discouraging death, they get shot down because "they would make people sad/mad". Too bad, so sad. Either get good (AKA stop making pants-on-head stupid mistakes), or get out. Bugs are a fact of life, no use complaining about them. All you can do is report them.
  12. If anything, I think it was a mistake to increase the in-game running speed to it's current levels. Now the children are spoiled, and are going to complain when it is rightfully decreased.

carry more than one primary gun? why not

Or, we could carry the tools in our hands, or leave them at camp. IRL, I don't carry my axe around with me when I go hiking. Instead, I leave it at camp, and bring firewood back to camp. My axe is both smaller and lighter than the in-game axe (a 3/4 axe, as I am a rather small man), but I still don't want to have to truck the thing around if I dont have to. What I would like to see is some sort of folding saw, that we can easily stash in a bag or even in a pocket. We could find a tree, assemble the saw, cut down the tree, cut the tree into manageable-sized pieces, truck them back to camp with a wagon or travois, then split the wood at camp with an axe.
  14. Whyherro123

carry more than one primary gun? why not

If anything, I'd like to see the so-called "tool space" as you put it, removed entirely. Tools should either be carried in the hand, or in a bag. How are we sticking the shovel/axe/hoe/etc to our backs anyways? At least with a longarm, we can pretend there is a sling. Besides, what do you need two longarms for?
  15. Whyherro123

What does "Go your way" mean?

I have no problem with there being a death timer, I am all for it. I just don't like the instant idea for "punishment". You seem into the idea of a death timer (good), but instead of wanting it in order to flesh out the game more, you instead want it so you can make people MORE pissed off when you kill them, AKA griefing. ( Bad, in my opinion). I like your ideas, I just don't agree with your rationale.
  16. Whyherro123

What does "Go your way" mean?

......This is why we can't have nice things.
  17. Whyherro123

What does "Go your way" mean?

Oh, I agree, believe me. But, the idea of "permadeath/death having meaning" kind of loses its edge when ungeared players would rather potentially commit highly-elaborate suicide instead of walking 5 minutes inland to the next town. I, personally, have never seen the Bambi-YOLO strategy work. They run to Elektro/Cherno/Berez, get shot and die. Real effective, mates. And, they don't just attack geared players. I spawned into Kamyshovo as a freshspawn once, and proceeded to loot the garages behind the police station. Another freshspawn proceeds to run up to me and tries to punch me out, all while screaming " COME AND DIE LIKE A MAN" . What purpose did that serve? I literally just had the T-shirt and pants you spawn with. I broke his legs, force-fed him until I thought he was fully hydrated and stuffed, and left him there. Served him right.
  18. Whyherro123

    MP5K VS AKM

No firearm is "better". It is all objectivity: which weapon do you like better, and what do you perform better with? Take my case, for example. I am running with a .357 Magnum revolver and repeater combo. Both weapons take the same cartridge, which is relatively common and powerful. I use the Repeater for mid-range targets, hunting, and zombie defense, and leave the Revolver for those "OH SHIT FUCK HE IS RIGHT THERE" moments. However, neither have gotten a player kill yet. Instead, I am using the improvised bow with improvised arrows, for shits and giggles. Recently, over three hours on a high-pop server, I've been hiding near a high-value loot spawn in a small coastal town, picking off players as they run up to loot the spawn. I "sweetened the pot" with some opened cans, a fire, etc. Over those three hours, I've gotten 15 kills in a row with the bow. You would think people would avoid the obvious ambush location, surrounded by dead bodies, but they kept running up to the fire, looking at the bodies, and eating the canned goods. Once they stood still, I would stand up from behind that waist-high fence, pull back an arrow, and put it through their chest. Would I use the bow in actual PvP? Not unless I had anything else, but I've proved that it can be used to defend oneself, and with chicken feathers (necessary to make arrows) spawning in chicken coops (which can be found in literally EVERY town), players now have next-to-no excuse NOT to make and use a bow. Is it a laser, capable of killing people hundreds of meters away with pinpoint accuracy? No, but I found with a little practice, know-how, and gumption, I could nail a moving target from about 30 meters. "Good enough for government work", as I always say.
  19. Whyherro123

What does "Go your way" mean?

Which is why, IMHO, there should be some sort of penalty to death. I mean, this game is supposed to have "permadeath", or at least, death is supposed to be serious? Because right now, bambis YOLO-rush other players because they have nothing to lose, and people suicide so they don't have to run 5 minutes. This behavior should be curtailed, at least.

Have you ever ridden a horse? In order to actually have a horse undertake serious work (AKA carry a rider, as well as tackle and bridle, etc), they need to be fed a diet concentrated in energy; oats, wheat, corn, etc. Not just grass. You also need to be trained in how to ride them, how to have them maneuver across different types of terrain, how to maintain the tack, how to recognize when they are injured, etc etc etc. Horses are HORRIBLE for survival travel. In all seriousness, you are better off using a bicycle, either pedal or motor-powered. They are common, efficient, easy to repair (take parts from other cycles), easy to fuel ( AKA YOU, or scavenged gas or diesel, or jury rig an ethanol-diesel engine, which is stupid-easy), and easy to ride. We invented motors and interchangeable parts for a REASON, folks. One of them is the fact that motors are more efficient for the long haul. Most outdoorsy folk around where I live use ATV's, dirtbikes, etc, rather than horses. And the landscape of Chernarus, with the exception of the open plains near Vybor, are unsuitable for horses, and these plains were probably for cattle than horses. I'll just leave this here: "You cannot gallop them for hours. They’ll collapse. The best way to make time in the saddle is to alternate paces, and have a remount or two trailing behind, and allow the animals reasonable rest. Don’t let your steed eat or drink indiscriminately; it’s likely to bloat and become helpless. In fact, it’s a rather fragile creature, requiring close attention—for example, rubdowns after hard exertion—if it isn’t to fall sick and perhaps die on you. It’s also lazy, stupid, and sometimes malicious." —Poul Anderson, On Thud and Blunder

Day and Night cycle and body temperature.

What. It totally does, mate. Are you referring to Celsius degrees? Regardless, I've developed hypothermia during the middle of a New England (AKA geology and climate almost exactly the same as Chernarus) summer, when the daytime temp was 95 degrees Farenheight. It started raining, and I finished setting up for a later activity, which ironically enough was a Wilderness Survival overnight exam. I finished within half an hour (took longer than I thought) , and I had full-blown serious hypothermia within an hour after that. Rather embarrassing, actually. So, yes, you can lose body temp VERY FAST, especially when standing still. I really wish people would ask the wilderness survival-trained members of the forum BEFORE they made a (usually incorrect) claim about survival......

    Run or kill yourself?

Why the hell do you not like Novo spawns? That part of the map (Svetlo - Novo - Severo metropolitan line) has some of the highest concentration of loot in the game, as well as the best-designed cities, best landscapes, etc. Live a little, man! Expand your horizons beyond the pew-pew die-die cities of the south.
  23. When i was in High School (AKA tip top running shape), I could bust out a 7 minute mile sustained, cross country, or a 5 minute mile flat out. Both of those were with racing clothes and racing flats on, and little else. I was 7th place Varsity on my team, just to show where I was in "ability". 4 years later, I can't do that anymore. Endurance running is a full time job. With regular clothing, boots, and a backpack full of gear, you would be lucky to jog a 10 minute mile, much less sprint for more than 400 yards.
  24. Whyherro123

What none of us want to admit

You can actually find feathers in chicken coops, now, no actual chickens needed. They are the little box-sheds you find in backyards, the ones with ramps going up to a little door. Just walk up and use the action command, and you will search for feathers. You get one at a time, but they stack, and it has a pretty high success rate. It is for that reason that I support all new players making and using the bow. If you have the materials, you have no reason to complain about being unarmed. I've made 20 arrows in 5 minutes.
  25. Whyherro123

    Best overall pistol

Pretty much, if you already have the .357 revolver, it isn't worth your time to pick up another, even if you have a magazine. Really. Trust me. If you need 6 rounds to kill someone, 2-3 more will not make that much of a difference.
