Found a MP-133 Pistol Grip Shotgun
Whyherro123 replied to Kittys Go Meoww's topic in General Discussion
Not.....really. It's just a shotgun. No need to make a thread about it. Hell, I had one a few days ago, and I dropped it for an SKS! -
No, actually. If Day Z is not hard and realistic enough when finished, I will find a mod that makes it so.

It can get pretty damn close, though, and most definitely should.

Gangrene or nail polish on our characters?
Whyherro123 replied to StayAlive (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
That....actually seems rather legit, bearing of course that it isn't a rendering bug. Or, you just slammed the nail in something (doorframe, under a rock, etc). The flesh underneath is bruised to all hell, the fingernail will fall off and the entire digit will be painful for about a week or so. -
Why does the game hide everything cool from us?
Whyherro123 replied to Sebidee's topic in General Discussion
I've both heard and read there were only three spawns. We found three and stopped searching. -
And people in EVE Online spend HOURS literally clicking on an asteroid to mine materials. How is that different from asking for added realism and difficulty? Oh, and they pay to do it. With multiple accounts.

Why does the game hide everything cool from us?
Whyherro123 replied to Sebidee's topic in General Discussion
I have about 8-10 active members of my clan. A couple of days ago, we spread out in an effort to find a truck. We found all three, and had a blast forming a convoy that we drove around the entire map, until the server restart. Want a vehicle, especially at this stage of the game, when ever clan and their mother is searching for one? Join a clan. Research the spawn points. WORK FOR YOUR FUN, rather than bitching and moaning because you can't find it by yourself, or don't want to devote time and effort for it. I work, often early in the mornings, which limits how often I can play with my friends (who are usually free late nights/early mornings). Do I complain because I can't PvP, and get "good gear" (Note: I HATE using assault rifles in-game, because they are so unrealistic it isn't even funny. I've killed more people with the Blaze than with the M4). Nope, I play by myself, and loot up until I can join them on their level. I don't run to the forums to bitch about how limited certain pieces of equipment are, and how it should be easier to find/get/have/make/whatever point you are trying to make. WORK.FOR.YOUR.FUN. -

It should be a chore. This isn't Battle of Duty: Call of Honor. Think of it in terms of Lore. How high of a population did South Zagoria have before the SHTF? Let us aim low, and say that 100,000 people lived in South Zagoria. If 50% became infected, and 40% of the survivors died off due to infighting, fighting the zeds, logistical issues, etc, that still leaves 10,000 people. And even if the infection rate was higher, there were still THOUSANDS of people looting, what, 3 "major" (in terms of the region. I have a National Guard base in my state that is little more than a depot and a Coast Guard pit stop, and it is larger than Cherno and Elektro combined.) military bases? Just how many AK's do you think were at those comparatively small bases, with respective armory sizes? Even with a server size of 50 people, we are the bare-bones, the idiots that stayed behind. Everyone else either looted up and left for greener pastures, or died (probably in the woods, where their gear is unlikely to be found). You are not "obligated", or do you "need", to have AK magazines. That is "high end" stuff, that you should work your ass off for. It most certainly be a "chore". -
Day Z is a survival game, and survival is made up of many aspects. Killing zombies is only one of them, and keeping your body properly fueled and maintained is as important, if not more, than fighting zombies. At least, in my opinion. Hell, how long does it currently take to cook a steak? 5 minutes? It should take WAY longer. Maintenance of both body and equipment should take up an appreciable amount of time, both as a nod to realism and to make the player slow down and think about both what they are doing, and what their next move is. Having meals take a decent amount of time to cook (as well as a decent amount of time to burn/become inedible, because frankly, the current 10 seconds-then-burn is stupid beyond reason), say, half an hour, would give players time to clean a firearm, put some water on to boil, check their feet for injuries, as well as sew up some rips in clothing. Right now, you practically have to babysit your food, as it will burn if you look away from it too long. Again, IMO, but we as a character do almost everything at BLAZING speed. We are capable of sprinting (non-stop, mind you) at 26 kph, and turning and zig-zagging on a dime. No sense of inertia or momentum there! It takes longer to change magazines in a rifle than it does to add 30 loose rounds to an empty magazine! "Topping off" magazines should be something you do while sitting around the campfire, not in the heat of a firefight. Should it take 5 minutes? No, but it also shouldn't be instantaneous enough where players feel comfortable filling empty magazines in battle. Same thing with sewing, or skinning. Everything needs to SLOW DOWN.

If anything, the food we eat should have an effect on both our energy levels and on our immune system. A steady diet of canned beans, fruit, and sodas will not be as good for you as a diet of fresh produce, greens, and lean meats. We should be slowed down (slower speeds), with lower energy and depressed immune systems if we don't eat a varied diet. Also: scurvy. Vitamin C can be found in plants other than citrus (many lawn weeds have high vitamin C content, as well as being delicious. Also pine needles, liver, etc), but it might not be known about by the average survivor. Alcohol has been with humanity for as long as we have had communities (Pots were found in the ruins of neolithic farms that had the residues of deliberately fermented grain.), and has been a commodity of trade for also that long. I also want alcohol to be eventually included, both as a trade good (most disaster-preparedness agencies believe that hard alcohols, especially moonshine, would become de facto currency after the SHTF) and as a source of storing calories. Seriously, hard alcohol can be used a medicinal disinfectant, fuel source (for vehicles, stoves, generators, lanterns, etc), industrial solvent, well....beverage, etc etc etc. The quality can be controlled by limiting the production of it to certain companies/groups, and different proofs can be valued differently. Of course, you could always distill your own, and attempt to crash the post-apocalyptic market, but you probably wouldn't be able to make the same quantity or quality, and I would expect the post-TSC BAFTE-goons to be even worse than the current : P Now, I am not going to tell you how to break the law, but the actual process and physical setup for an alcohol still can be found online. It is actually legal to brew your own alcohol in the US, so long as you don't sell it. If there is any form of alcohol I would like to see, it is hard cider. Unpasteurized apple cider has certain yeast strains in it, and apple cider is relatively easy to make. Take apples, quarter them, then put them into a pot and mash them up. Strain out the juices (by putting them in a permeable sack and squeezing, for example), transfer the juices to a clean glass or plastic bottle, cap with a balloon (poke a hole with a needle first) or a piece of cloth, and leave in a cool, dry place for a couple of weeks. Once the foam stops forming, the fermentation has stopped, and you can then drink it, or bottle it and let it age. Boom, alcoholic cider that has a decent number of calories and carbohydrates, Vitamin C, and tastes good to boot! Great way to store a GREAT food group (apples) for a long time, over winter perhaps? http://www.gameofbrews.com/wildling-cider/ As you can tell, I am a cider fan. Why so simple? I am not asking for 5-Star meals, but I've cooked some pretty complex, multi-course multi-item meals while camping with little more than a Dutch Oven, a metal grate, and a nice, flat rock.

Crafting Explosives And A Nail bomb In Standalone
Whyherro123 replied to Credidred's topic in Gallery
Damn straight. -
This is pretty much how human communities have formed throughout the history of human society, so I see no reason why this couldn't happen in Day Z. Hopefully, there are eventually light industries developed, like firearm manufacturing, ammunition fabrication, factory-powered cloth weaving, etc etc etc. Therefore, there could be actual trade between communities, and therefore, a reason to actually have bandits.

Jesus, I've become an Alpha Apologizer! Guys, THE GAME ISN'T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING FINISHED! The Devs could say "fuck it" and scrap the entire current loot mechanic tomorrow. Wait until Beta to bitch about loot.

Why? I mean, I seriously do not understand why people think starving to death would be a fun time. If there were only a few harvestable plants scattered around the map, you would NEVER be able to do anything. You would never be fully energized, never be able to heal from wounds, get sick all the time, etc. There is a difference between "survival" game and "fuck you" game. I, on the other hand, want canned goods and sodas to be as rare as tits on a bull. That way, if/when you find one (HOLY SHIT, food that doesn't go bad!), you hoard it for when it is really needed. Relatedly, agriculture and animal husbandry is NOT easy. You don't just stick some seeds in the ground and you get food, or let animals run around in a field. You actually have to work pretty hard for your food, especially in a post-apocalyptic world where there aren't an overabundance of tractor fuel and synthesized fertilizers. (However, I would LOVE to see a tractor with interchangeable attachments as a vehicle) However, if you put that hard work in, you should be able to get enough food to survive, and if you are lucky or skilled, get a surplus, for trading or storing. I also want there to be means of preserving food, like smoking, drying, canning, so grown food/hunted animals don't go bad. I proposed agriculture take about a week to grow. That way, it is a fast enough process where we can actually get enough food to survive with hard work, but slow enough for us to appreciate the work we put into it, as well as truly fucking you over if something bad happens (crop failure, wild animals eat the crop, bandits burn it down). You should also have to check on it, to weed it and chase away animals (maybe build a fence, and a scarecrow? BASEBUILDING AHOY). You would also need to ensure you have enough food saved up from last harvest to tide you over to the next one, as well as the current harvest being big enough to both feed you, as well as providing enough future seed. IRL, until the last couple hundred years, agriculture was the basis of the economy, as well as the "basic" unit of barter. Medieval peasants paid taxes with wheat, American colonists bartered with carn-made whiskey, etc etc etc
-
Which is why the Devs have included, and are still working on, an agriculture system.

Exactly. Let me play a song for you on the world's smallest violin. Join me as the world weeps for the loss of your likely server-hopped-for gear!
-
You see, it should be the exact opposite. More people gives you more hands, "division of labor", more eyes to watch, more hands to bandage, etc etc. More people is almost always better.

Cannot seem to retrieve arrows out of zombies
Whyherro123 replied to Johnny Depth's topic in General Discussion
That is pants-on-head-stupid, with a capital S. Hell, even stone and bone broadheads can and will punch through bones, no worse for wear. The shafts I can see getting damaged, but you can straighten them relatively easily, or just use rivercane, and have a never-ending supply of perfectly straight arrow shafts. Why include a ranged weapon with reusable ammunition, if you can't reuse the ammunition? -
1) Don't know 2) It is a known bug 3) Well, have you cooked over a fire in real life? Surprise, food takes a while! If anything, it doesn't take long enough! When I am in the backcountry, I usually set up my pot with stew/soup,etc etc etc on a tripod over the fire and go do something else for an hour or so. Usually split wood. ALWAYS need more firewood.....
-
Quoted from the DevBlog "For now we will be adding new items and crafting possibilities including primitive stone blade and guts, next step will be to add bones, torch and alternative way to ignite the fire without matches. " The thing is, stone blades are neither primitive, nor easy to make. Metal replaces stone as the tool-medium of choice partially because it was easier to work with, not because it was better. Even during the Bronze Age (Bronze is actually "better" [harder, stronger, holds an edge better] than Iron), knapped-then-polished flint tools like axes and knives were still in use for tasks requiring REALLY sharp edges. They had specialized knappers who would make these tools. Obsidian and glass (which obsidian is, just a natural form of it), is actually rather sharp, some of the sharpest edges in nature, and it took a lot of work to make those edges you see on Stone Age tools and weapons. I've made some (admittedly, rather crappy) arrowheads from glass bottle bottoms, and while they were undoubtedly effective (punched all the way through a straw-and-plastic target, it took me about a month to make three, including learning how to flint-knapp, gathering/making tools, and finding suitable pieces of glass. This is a video comparing the difference (HINT: there is effectively none) between a knapped obsidian arrowhead and a steel broadhead. However, once you know how to knapp, you never need to worry about arrowheads, knives, or even axes, if the glass is thick enough.

Improvement Ideas: Amputation and Medicine
Whyherro123 replied to Rucki's topic in General Discussion
I want that changed as well, as well as adding a more complex and in-depth medical system. If you stood a solid chance of dying due to an infected scrape, people would be much less likely to jump into PvP. PvP would be slower, more well-thought-out, and more deliberate, rather than just for shits and giggles. -
Then, of course, there is trapping, so one doesn't have to "waste" time and energy hunting small, or, with a little planning, large game. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215434-trapping/
