Fishing hooks... am I going mad or have they suddenly become extremely rare?
Whyherro123 replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
You know, sometimes the survival-ideas of the devs confuse me. Can intestines be used a binding material? Yes. Are there a whole plethora of alternate, probably better, uses for them, namely making water containers, cooking pots, and sausage skins? Yes. To me, a FAR better choice for rope making is either grass or braided hide. -
Like I said, it is an ambush weapon. Don't run up to people and try to get an arrow into them. Stay crouched, go from cover to cover, and try to stay behind them. I actually got a "stalking" kill with the bow earlier. I was in Elektro, and saw a guy running through the western part of the city. I followed him to the little compound with the well west of the city. When he stopped to drink, I nailed him. VERY satisfying. You would be surprised at how little attention people pay to their surroundings in this game, especially when there are only a few on the server. He never once looked behind him.
-
Have you actually tried PvPing with it, yet? I've gotten "ambushes" down, I think I might try some "stalking" now.

What. If you get hit with an axe in real life, you are pretty much dead, especially in a world with no advanced medical care. A baseball bat? Some bruises, broken bones, if you get hit in the head, yeah, you might die.

Clarification on "Base Building"
Whyherro123 replied to Caboose187 (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Often times the best deterrent to attack is not force in and of itself, but instead, the show of force. Make something such a pain in the ass to attack, and very few people will attack it. Such as it is with my palisade idea; it isn't that it would be REALLY hard to get through, it just looks like it would. So, would you risk running up to the wall, attaching a chain to it from the back of your truck and driving away, all while getting shot at? ......Probably not. I wouldn't, unless I had my whole clan behind me. And, yes, that totally makes sense. That is why the clan built the fortification, is it not? Artificial balancing is STUPID and a detriment to the game. If someone, or a clan, puts 100s of man-hours into a project, I would expect it to be at least worth the time and effort. Not something a freshspawn can run up to and knock down with an axe in a single swing. Or build by themselves, for that matter. -

I also keep seeing billboards for tractors with multiple attachment options. If there is any vehicle I want more, it is that. The amount of tasks you can put that thing to is amazing....if you have the attachments, of course. Rototilling cutting light brush attaching a hydraulic log splitter dozer blade w/ lifter digging attachment And those are just the ones I've personally worked with. -

Which is why I suggested the "end-game" fortification be little more than a bunch of logs stood up on end in a ditch. Sure, they could put barbed wire or spikes at the base, but it is still a bunch of logs. With enough effort, you could simply pull them out of the ground. It just would take time, be really obvious, and make a lot of noise. Or, you could just drive a truck through it. Or break the gate. -

And you are acting like using an axe or a shovel requires 3 separate college degrees. I mentioned the two tools in the first place; an axe and a mattock (pretty much just a different style of pickaxe) Cut things to roughly the same height? Holy shit, guys, we just lay them next to each other, line up one end, and mark the length we want cut off! I NEVER WOULD'VE GUESSED. You mean we have to use an axe to rough-cut the ends off a log? HOW WOULD WE EVER DO THAT? We have to dig a hole to a certain depth? I DON'T KNOW WHAT DO? It pretty much is as simple as 1,2,3 (or, really, Cut trees, cut to length, dig ditch, upright trees in ditch, fill back in ditch, tamp down, sooooo 1,2,3,4,5,6). We aren't building a fucking rocket., or even a complicated structure. Again, any asshole with a hand and a hammer can nail boards together. I am not talking about building a fucking motte-and-bailey castle here, just what amounts to a sturdy fence and a couple of roughed-out board walls. And that is the top of the line, requiring many MANY man hours, materials, and people. Not Rust where you can throw together a wall by yourself in seconds. -

If an illiterate medieval peasant could dig a ditch and build a palisade with little more than an axe and a mattock, we should be able to do the same. Should it take A LOT of man hours, a lot of material, and a lot of people? Of course. Will it be bulletproof and impregnable? Of course not. Would it severely slow down any zombie trying to get in, and present a challenge to a player attempting the same? Yes. Of course, something like this: would be literally the "top end" of basebuilding, maybe a major clan dedicates a lot of time and effort into surrounding their main camp with said palisade. Literally any asshole with a hand and 2 brain cells to rub together can put together a rough wall made of boards using a hammer and some nails. Would it be insulated against the cold, wet, and wind? No, but insulation can be brought about by tarpaper, found in industrial locations, or through liberal application of mud and bark. Even still, that should take a substantial amount of time. I've built a decently-sized compound (5 people), with a nice shelter (with beds!), a firepit with retaining wall, a wood-drying rack, a skinning post, and a wash stand. All surrounded by moved bushes, to make the place kinda-sorta hidden. Took me and the guys about a week, with about 5-6 hours of work a day. Thing about basebuilding is, it is, by its very definition, a bold statement. Claiming a place as yours essentially screams "This place is mine, and I will be here for a while!". To me, that screams "END GAME", where you have the time, the manpower, and, probably most importantly, the available FOOD, to be able to stay in once place , even only semi-permanently. This means (TO ME) that the building of actual bases is a serious endeavor, one that would not just be helped, but REQUIRES, properly fleshed out agriculture, animal husbandry, trapping, etc etc etc, a reliable source for food in the long-term. Fortifying a cabin in the middle of Black Forest is all good, but your used up all your saved food building your fortifications, and now you can't get out of the forest without starving to death.......woops. Basebuilding ideally should be a clan-based endeavor, something taking a lot of time and effort. I don't consider stashing a tent somewhere to be basebuilding, because it lacks permanence. I really dislike how tents are only really used for, and thought of, as gear-storing devices. TENTS ARE FOR SLEEPING. Can you store some stuff in a tent with you as you sleep? Yes. Would I do it long term, as in, leave a tent in the woods stuffed with food, bandages, and ammunition? NOPE. To me, that tent is more valuable for its protection-from-the-elements qualities, than for the ability to store anything in it. Face it, if all you have is a backpack, a gun, and a tent, chances are you dont need that much stuff. You would be better off being nomadic, than being tied down to where your tent was. I (and I know that this would unfortunately NEVER happen) would love it if our characters stayed in-game when we logged out. Went to sleep, fucked off, whatever. This way, gameplay would become much more strategic. So, you would build a shelter, or set up a tent, to safely protect yourself from the elements while you logged out. Shelterbuilding could be the "Basebuilding 101", where you build some form of shelter from natural materials, in order to both store gear and to safely log out. (This could be done even without the "logout thing" I like) There are many kinds of shelters that can be built and they take various amounts of time to build, and can hold various numbers of people and equipment. Lean to: Fastest and easiest to build, least protection (only blocks 1 direction, allows heat to dissipate) A-Frame: Most protection, longest and hardest (requires most materials) to build: These shelters (and many, many more) could be the intermediary between living nomad-style in a tent (or even without one!), and having a nice set up with a farm and a fortified house. This blog actually shows the building process of a decent long-term shelter. It is effectively a house, and, well, I like it! Up-size it a bit, and you could fit a decently-sized clan in there. http://joeoleary1.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html -
Not for shits and giggles. Why waste all that energy to get a VERY unappetizing (humans are actually not likely to be eaten by predators. We are really bone-y, and don't have a lot of fat, especially compared to "prey" species.) meal, when they could just eat the stuff we left around? I have seen no bear bags nor boxes in game. Animals aren't stupid, and aren't going to go for the human when there is easier, more appetizing, or less dangerous potential meals around. Humans are death on roller skates from an animals POV, even if all we have is a pointy stick.

Fishing hooks... am I going mad or have they suddenly become extremely rare?
Whyherro123 replied to rickyriot's topic in General Discussion
I just found 5 pieces of rope within 30 seconds in Elektro.... : P Really, I would like to be able to make my own rope, from twisted grass or braided strips of cloth. The less dependent I am on fickle loot spawns, the better. -
Which is why you sleep in a tree, and prepare all food away from your campsite. People seemingly have this idea that predators have this hate-boner for humanity, that they are just waiting for us to relax our guard, and they want nothing more than to kill and eat us. This idea could not be any more incorrect, and was (and sadly, is) the reason why so many predator species in Europe and North America were next-to wiped out. What are the predator species we are most likely to come across in Chernarus? Wolves and bears? Wolves want nothing less to avoid humans, and will only become aggressive if you intrude upon their territory. And aggressive, in this case, means following you and trying to scare you away. If you provoke an actual attack, they are probably more terrified than you are. Similarly with bears. Most bear attacks occur either because they smelled food/etc at your campsite, came to investigate, and you startled them, or you got between them and their young. The thing is, most animals (not only predators) actively seek to avoid potentially dangerous confrontation as much as possible. Predators don't go on murder-sprees just because they can, because they know that their prey can, and WILL, fight back, and they don't want to get hurt. If you get attacked by an animal, it is literally the final and worst option available to the animal, and it means you literally ignored EVERY other option to defuse the situation. These options include making themselves known, setting dominance (staring in particular. NEVER try to stare down an animal confronting you.), and actively following you in effort to scare you off and get you to leave. Plus, there is the territorial concerns. South Zagoria has about 225 square kilometers of area, and let us assume that only about 70 square kilometers of that is ocean. That leaves about 150 sq kilometers of area for animals to live, INCLUDING cities and human development. Let us lowball the area claimed by a wolfpack and a SINGULAR bear as 100 square miles (wolves, and the area is given for a wolfpack in the 48 lower US states http://www.wolf.org/learn/basic-wolf-info/wolf-faqs/#h), and for a bear is between 70 (female) and 300-500 (male) square miles per individual. http://westernwildlife.org/grizzly-bear-outreach-project/faqs/#a6 This works out to be 260 square kilometers for a wolfpacks territory, and between 181-1295 square kilometers for a female - male bear. So, we could have 1 wolfpack for the whole of South Zagoria, maybe a female bear, and not likely to come across a male one. So, even if predators were likely to attack humans, we wouldn't be likely to come across one. Really, the most likely aggressive animal we would come across would be packs of angry, hungry, rapidly-undomesticating dogs. Good eating on one of them!

I can't wait until actually realistic (read: difficult and time consuming) survival and medical mechanics are implemented, and for all the KoS-fanboys that wave their assault-rifle-shaped erections around to start crying. I'll boil their tears to make safe drinking water.
-
Not really. I've been spending a decent amount of time in the "wilderness" I mentioned in my above post, and I have yet to see another player for the week or so I have been playing. Avoid the cities and "high loot locations" (Veresnik, Green Mountain, Pavlovo MB, Myshkino tents, etc) and you probably won't find another player, because they are all clusterfucking over "good" (snort) loot in cities and military bases.
-
The cities and towns are a package deal with the rivers and streams, mate, for the EXACT reason I mentioned above; human settlement and waterways go hand in hand. The Svetlo-Novo-Severo river valley should realistically be, and I think it is actually, the most heavily developed, settled, and farmed part of the South Zagoria region. You want wilderness? Go to the center of the map, in the mountainous/hilly region that stretches west-to-east from Koslovka to Tulga, and north-to-south from the Black Forest to Pusta. That is the least-developed part of the region. Want to hazard a guess as to why? No rivers of navigable size, as well as difficult terrain. The rest of the map is either flat coastal floodplain, or river valley, all prime areas for settlement. What is with this obsession with Northern and Western wilderness, anyways? Is it because it was there in the mod? Well, too bad, because guess what kids? This isn't the mod any more. Take a look at this map. Well, to the north lies Russia, along with two substantial river valleys (read: heavy settlement and industry). Along the coast to the north would probably be settled as well, at least lightly. To the west lies the rest of Chernarus, and considering the fact that South Zagoria is widely assumed to be the least developed part of Cherarus, and that there is a major city (Miroslavl) and a major river valley to the west of South Zagoria, the land to the west of "Chernarus" (the in-game map) would be at least as built up as the in-game part, and, in all probability, MORE developed.
-
Exactly. If you look at both a topographic map of Chernarus, as well as the physical terrain and geography, the overwhelming majority of "urban centers" (Svetlo, Novo, Severo, maybe Elektro, Solni, Kamenka, Zeleno) are located on what should really be waterways, as in, rivers and streams. The major rivers would be the Svetlo-Novo-Severograd line (look at the topo map above, and you would see the river valley quite clearly. In fact, that river valley should really be the most heavily settled and farmed part of the region) and the Kamenka-Pavlovo-Zelenogorsk like (smaller, and more constrained by mountains than the above Svetlo river, but still pretty big). The smaller streams would be at the Solni-Dolina-Pavlovo line and the Elektro-Topolka Dam- Mogilevka line. These deductions are based upon in-game evidence, and the existence of underwater "canyons" (washed out sediments due to water movement) on the ocean floor near the supposed river mouths. Streams would not have enough volume to displace sediments as much as rivers, so the "canyons" are smaller, and less visible. Now, what does this mean for urban settlement? In almost all of human history, settlement has OVERWHELMINGLY happened firstly on the ocean coast (easy access to both land and sea food sources, as well as simplified navigation and movement), then secondly up navigable streams and rivers. Rivers (and oceans) were mankinds first "highway", and as soon as we were capable of building canoes and rafts, we were travelling up rivers and settling along their course. Same thing with Chernarus. Don't forget, in the background ARMA 2 lore, Chernarus has a history stretching back to at least medieval times, and probably MUCH earlier, considering how the real-life Black Sea (which the in-game Green Sea is a stand-in for) was one of the first areas extensively settled in Europe by Homo sapiens. So, there were probably medieval towns and villages along those rivers, and over time, they developed into modern towns and cities. EDIT: in fact, there probably would be a lot of little streams all across Chernarus, after taking a closer look at the above topo map. A second, smaller stream in Kamenka, a stream leading into Rify, a small one coming west out of Berezino, A small one following the north road into Cherno proper, etc etc etc

Or, you know, you could put your big boy britches on, and not make a decently-expensive purchase based on the word of a small number of Internet strangers. I seriously do not understand the purpose of this poll. Do you want input on each game? Opinions? And if you are going to get all three EVENTUALLY, why waste time asking us which one to buy first? I could see if you were only buying one, but all three?

That is adorable. Threads like these are almost the same thing as " To the guy I killed in Cherno" threads; useless, self-congratulatory ego-masturbation topics that use up bandwidth and the moderators time. If there could be a sticky for these types of thing, the forum would be a better place. -
Oh JESUS. Did the Devs hold a gun to your head or a knife to your throat, and say to you ,"Buy this early-access alpha or die"? No? Then it is your own damn fault for buying into something you apparently aren't ready for.
-
Oh, they are happening, just not where you are. Move out, live a little.

No, I am merely annoyed that my favorite forum is steadily being filled up with useless threads, often about players bragging about gear that literally everyone can find. Lurk more, son. It'll be better for you that way. -
See everyone? This is why having an open-access early-Alpha available to the public was a bad idea. Mate......the game isn't even 1/3 of the way done. Give it some time.

Not really. They also spawn in police stations. EDIT: And NOW I recognize the sarcasm. Beans for you. -
Uh....move then? You do realize a whole metropolitan corridor to the north (Svetlo/Novo/Severograd) was added a while back, and many people follow that road. And, yes, the spawns did change. You are no longer limited to NE coast spawns any more. Get off the coast, for one. Satisfy your PvP-boner inland, where almost everyone else is. TL;DR Bambikiller camps coast when everyone is inland, complains of boredom.

1) You can literally run across the entire map in half an hour, so, no, military bases are not "1/2 an hour or more" from Rify. Hell, there is an Admin building (also known as the "jail") in Turovo, literally 5 minutes from where you were. 2) Or, he could've meant Severograd. Doesn't really matter, because Svetlo/Novo/Severograd are all about 3 minutes away from each other. 3) If you willingly shared it with him, it isn't "YOUR rice". Just saying. And there are three or 4 "kitchen buildings" on the run to Severograd where you could've found literally all the food you could ever want. 4) You are, in my opinion of course, a Grade A Prick. Teaching yet another new player "growing up" to learn that KOS-asshattery is the way to go. Even worse, "pretending" to be friendly.
