    Uses for bone

So, with the new .54 patch, we now have access to bone from animal kills. In real life, bone is a very useful material for survival, from bone awls and needles to knife, arrow, and spear blades. I propose that you can make many different tools from bone, all geared towards "primitive" survival purposes, in the sense that we would not have to enter a town in order to find the necessary gear (leather sewing kits, regular sewing kits, fish-hooks, etc) Arrows: Well, we already have bone arrows in .54, but the below just show how deadly a bone-tipped arrow can be. In the second video, you can see that the bone arrowhead punches through the spinal column of the deer. Knife/spear: bone can be made surprisingly durable and sharp, by boiling out the oils that exist inside normally. Fish-hook: now, we also have bone fish-hooks in .54, but actually carving a hook like the one in-game is just asking to get your knife through the hand. In reality, using a "gorge" made from bone would be faster, easier, and actually more effective. Needles and Awls: Can be made to replace "modern" kits, to avoid going into town

Discussion about weapon slots on your back

I hold the opinion that melee weapons must either be carried inside a "container", like a backpack, strapped to the "container", held in a sheath (which, in turn, could be attached you your belt or to a backpack), or carried in the hand. Seeing things like axes and shovels get "stuck" to your back is stupid, and actually makes me slightly mad.
  3. Does the compensator have slots that direct the gases from the muzzle in a specific direction? If so, attaching a suppressor on the end of the compensator will do fuck-all, won't it? There is still the "gap" where gases can escape...

why doesn't the bipod fit on the mosion?!

    1) Because it doesn't have a rail for mounting the bipod? 2) AND, because it was a rifle from the 1930s? The Mosin-Nagant 91/30 was NOT a snipers weapon. Did it get a 3.5X magnification PU scope, for use as a Designated Marksman rifle? Yes. Are there 91/30 Nagants with top-notch parts, capable of reaching out to "sniper" distances with "sniper-worthy" accuracy? Yes Most of the time, the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 was a bog-standard battle rifle, tough, reliable, but not pinpoint accurate.

Lets get real, the real issue with this game

It is funny, I used to hate that "excuse", as I considered it, back when I joined the forum. Now, I use the statement all the time!

    Horses in DayZ Standalone

Again, do you know how to properly saddle, un-saddle, maintain the tack and bridle, how to put the bit and assorted gear on the horse in the correct manner without hurting the animal, recognize and treat diseases, how to ride the horses over different terrain, how to actually ride the horse (different steps, how to sit, etc), etc etc etc? Bikes are easier to maintain, easier to ride, easy to fix, and when they get broken beyond repair, you can just go to a shed behind a house and get a new one. Not including the fact that Chernarus is very mountainous. The only flat land suitable for horses is by Vybor, and I am willing to bet that that land was for cattle, not horses. You do realize that humans can outrun horses, right? Over time, of course, but it is possible. Humans are (were?) persistence hunters, that is, we chased animals down until they collapsed from exhaustion. Other animals might be faster than us in the short term, but very few animals are faster than us in the long term. In fact, wolves (and by proxy, dogs) are one of those few species that can keep up with us via persistence hunting. Not including the fact that horses are rather easy to spook, and when they get spooked, they will run, and not stop until they feel like it, regardless of your wishes (If you managed to remain in the saddle at all, that is) Gunshots? Spooked horse. Zombies? Spooked horse. Hell, shadows on the road? Spooked horse (horses, cows, and other ungulate animals are very leery about crossing things like grids and trenches, as they can break a leg easily) So, enjoy your easily spooked, effectively-slower-over-time, high-maintenance animal. I will ride my bike right on by, and probably stab it with a spear to get the meat.

    Sandwiches and baking

    We NEED more advanced cooking.
  9. 1) My clan has a medic. I usually act in that capacity, and I used to agree with you about bloodpacks: they were a hassle to find matches, and "only" restored 1000 blood, a relatively-paltry amount. I used to use saline exclusively, as it was much easier logistic-wise (everyone can accept saline), even if it only restored 500 blood. Now, with Blood restoring twice as much, I might switch back. Also, I am slowly trying to persuade everyone in my clan to carry a "1st Aid Kit", containing a splint, two bandages/rags, and a bag of their own blood. That way, if they get shot, their squad-mate can just take it from their aid kit and inject it, with no concerns about incompatibilities. 2) people KoS right now because there 1) isn't really anything else to do and 2) there are next-to-no consequences for it. No hordes of zombies come running, there are no trading centers to be barred from for being a murdering scumbag, and ammo is STUPID-plentiful. If you only had 3 bullets for a gun, 30 zombies would come barreling out for your ass when you fire, and most every trader and community on the server would bar you entry/hunt you down for murdering others in cold blood, then KoS would slow/calm down. Really, there should be a reason for players to make/use or trade for the supplies they need, and that reason should be scarcity. Right now, you can run around Berezino, and find enough clothing, food, drink, medical supplies and weapons/ammunition to play the game for hours. You have no reason to make a bow/leather clothing, or to actually interact/trade with other players, unless you deliberately go out of your way to do so. If the amount of clothing/canned food/medical supplies dropped drastically, and the zombie count increased drastically , then players would trade/use improvised equipment.

Thoughts on the new eating and drinking system?

If you eat THREE WHOLE CANS OF FOOD in one sitting in real life, you will get sick, even if you space them out over the course of a "few minutes". In reality, your stomach cannot hold that much, and eating a lot of food all at once, after not eating for a while, will make your body vomit as a natural reaction (you can actually go into shock from this) "Hungry" is different from "energized". Being not "hungry" means your stomach is full. Being "energized" means you have a healthy metabolic process, AKA good reserves of energy, from eating good food. If anything, getting the "energized" buff should take a lot of work, in the form of being hydrated, resting, and eating the right foods. In my opinion, getting the "energized" buff should be next to impossible from canned food, canned food often being heavily-processed crap. Will they keep you alive? Yes. Are they the "best" thing to eat? Nope. You would also need to be well-hydrated, not sprinting about, and having ample breaks. Only then will you get "energized", and then, over time, regain blood. Not "sprint around town, stuffing 7 different cans of food and 5 liters of water down your gullet, then sprinting down the road to the next town", like what currently happens. Hell, I would like it if the devs made it so if we sprinted/jogged around on a full stomach enough, we vomited! Realistic! When I was on my High Schools track team, A freshman asked me for racing tips, I told him to drink a quart of milk and a quart of OJ an hour or so before the race. I felt bad, but it was so goddamned funny. It was like a creamsicle of sadness!

Thoughts on the new eating and drinking system?

Exactly. When I climbed a local mountain a few months back, I probably drank at least 15 liters of water over the course of a day, as well as eating a relatively large amount of food (20 miles over 9 hours and up 2000 feet will do that to you.) Did I drink it all at once? Nope, I would've gotten "poisoned". I drank at least a liter every hour, with frequent breaks and snacks. Is the current system working right? Nope, but it is a step in the right direction.
  13. Whyherro123

    camelbaks?

Meh. As someone trained in Wilderness Survival, I MUCH prefer regular water bottles over a Camelbak. Sure, you can slip it inside a backpack, and drink from it without using your hands, but if it breaks (any of the O-rings, the tube itself, or if the bag springs a leak), you are fucked. Not including that you can't boil water in it. Used one, didn't like it. I carry about 4 aluminum 1L water bottles carabiener'd to my pack. I can carry at least the same amount of water you can, with much more functionality.

    12 gauge Flaregun

AHAHAHAHAAH....no In real life, the flareguns as depicted in-game are MOST EMPHATICALLY NOT designed to chamber an actual shotgun shell. The chamber for the flares is shorter than required for actual shotshells, and even if you shorten a shell so it will fit, the flaregun is likely to explode in your hand. Case in point: I own the real-world version of the in-game flaregun (it actually is REALLY common), and it states, right on the packaging: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHAMBER SHOTGUN AMMUNITION, NOR MODIFY SHOTGUN AMMUNITION TO FIT (paraphrased) Were there flareguns made in metal, that could also fire shotshells? Yes. Do people shorten actual shotshells so they can fire them from flareguns? Yes Should those people consider themselves extremely lucky that they didn't lose a hand? Yes.

Hot Keys only for items NOT in your packpack

I actually like this idea. If anything, make us take our backpacks off in order to access it.

Some thoughts about zombies and stuff...

    1) I ask the same thing, but you have to remember: the current "zombies" are merely a PLACEHOLDER. New, improved "zombies" will come further down the line. I eventually hope to be able to do the same thing to zombies that we can do to players: wound them and make them bleed out, break their limbs, handcuff/bind them, etc 2) Because "regular dead walker zombies", as you put them, are comical at best and annoying at worst. A horde of shamblers, no matter how large, is never that frightening, so long as you can briskly walk away from the horde. 3) Nope, they are "just" infected humans, so anything that will kill a human will kill them. If anything, both we (the players) and the zombies are too hardy: there is no way you should be able to shrug off a knife to the gut or a hammer to the shoulder. 4) HAHAHAHAHAHA. There were MILLIONS of AKM, SKS, Mosin 91/30, etc rifles made. They should not be rare. Want to know what should be rare? Ammo. So, you could have a rifle, but only a few rounds for it. Do you shoot that "zombie" coming for you, or do you stab it with your bayonet (and risk close combat, which is also way too easy and risk-free), and save the bullets for later?

Human trophy parts like an Ear Necklace, because we are bored.

I would like scalps. Realistic, and a good way to identify who is a badass (or, conversely, a maniac that wears body parts). Imagine a clan where you can only advance in rank by presenting the scalps of worthy foes? BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
  18. Whyherro123

    Bows, bows and bows.

I...don't think you people quite understand just how difficult bows actually are to make. Bow-making is an art, and requires knowledge of physics. Get the dimensions of the bowstave and limbs incorrect just a tine bit, and it will probably explode due to the forces involved the first time you try to draw the thing. (HINT: personal experience with this). I've made several threads on bows, arrows, and quivers before. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/220374-primitive-equipment-possibilities-and-such/ http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215247-quiver-arrows/ http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/205753-archery-bows-arrows-etc/ Right now, I am working on a "flatbow", probably the easiest style of "self-bow" (that is, a bow carved from a single piece of wood) to make, and self-bows are themselves the "simplest" bow to make. From start to now (and I am only about halfway done), it has taken me about 4 months, between final seasoning, measuring, cutting, and shaping the limbs. I still have a lot of work In reality, I would choose to make a spear over a bow in a survival situation, almost every time. Spears are multi-functional, and compared to the bows that are practical to make in a survival situation (read: bundle bows), have almost the same range and more killing power when thrown

Nope. Disconnecting from a server, then being able to jump right back onto that server, no timer? That would lead to ghosting.

The new melee sounds are just... Bad

    Not...that loudly, though.
  22. So, with the implementation of "tanned leather clothing" in the last patch, we now have the ability to make almost everything we need to survive without actually going into town. We have clothing (need leather and fertilizer: how fertilizer tans the leather is beyond me), a knife, and a ranged weapon (the bow, which is still both too shitty to actually use, and too "good" for what it is made from) Key word: ALMOST I, for one, would like to be able to play this game without ever having to actually enter a developed area (known to myself as KOS-filled deathtrap-havens : P) This means that we must be able to build fires and store water in some fashion, as the only ways to do so currently are with matches and bottles/canteens. There are, of course, "primitive" ways of making fires, all with varying levels of difficulty, effectiveness, and effort required. Probably the most effective method is through a bow-drill. They are (relatively) easy to construct, easy to use, and, with skill and effort, fast (I've gotten a fire started in about 2 minutes using a bow drill. I had the fire already laid, and merely transferred the coals over to it when they lit via the drill. There is also the hand-drill method, which SUCKS (but still works), or striking flint (I am going to assume that the in-game "stone knife" is flint, for ease-of-mind) on other various stones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sl_xU8btwk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUr4LDKAdQE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkhTnnQ6Auo As for making water-tight containers from natural materials, either gourds (pumpkins) or resin-covered leather would work. Workable resin could be made from either pine or birch trees, and dries water-tight. Take the resin-coated leather and fold/sew it into a workable bag. http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=150962 As for the whole "tanned leather" thing, I understand that this is supposed to be a game, but....come on. That isn't how leather is made! My solution: take 4 sticks and bind them together into a "tanning rack". Drop said tanning rack into the environment, then move the raw hides onto the tanning rack from the inventory. Take some "guts" from the animal, then move them "onto" the hide on the rack. Over time (just like gardens/snares) the hides will change into leather. Semi-realistic, and doesn't take too much time Also, animals should offer much more resources than they currently do. More meat, more hides, more "guts", more bones. An animal should be an amazing resource, not just "meh, I guess I'll shoot that deer". Of course, man can not live off meat alone! I have wanted a more fleshed-out "foraging" system implemented for a while now. All manner of plants in the woods and in the fields either are edible, have some craft-worthy purpose, or are useful for medicine. Maybe the addition of a "survival manual" or "field guide" as a book could help to identify which plants are useful? Here are some of my proposed recipes -"cordage": take handfuls of grass and twist them together ( ) or the tendons from an animal and use them for binding.-"Bow-drill": 3 sticks + 1 cordage -"Hand-drill": 2 sticks -"Flint striker" 2 "small stones" -Various clothing: various tanned hides + bone awl + cordage -"waterskin": "Guts" + cordage + 1 tanned hide + resin

    Primitive equipment: possibilities and such

So, on to cooking! Right now, you basically NEED a cooking pot or frying pan to cook, with the new fire lays and tripods and such. This means that you HAVE to enter a town or city at one point to look for a pot/skillet. UNACCEPTABLE There are many different ways to cook "primitively". They all involve various containers, like baskets made of birchbark or reeds, and hot rocks. Firstly, MEAT. All you need is a flat rock next to the fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnY8Bx0Hn1I For anything else, you pretty much need to boil it. Boiling with primitive containers other than pottery is....relatively difficult, to the inexperienced, but eminently possible. HINT: it needs small rocks, like the ones you use to make the stone knife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyC8yqYj3_M To boil water using rocks, you need a waterproof container, probably made from birchbark or woven reeds (with the interior coated in birch tar) Now, the absolute PINNACLE of "primitive" cooking uses pottery (to make bowls, pots, skillets, ladles, etc), and the development of pottery was a major step-up in human technology. You need clay (found along river/stream banks, water, a fire, and time.
  24. Whyherro123

Bags, impact of future food items.

In real life, I generally do not carry cooking equipment with me: it is too big, bulky, and heavy to cart around. If I HAVE to take it with me, it gets strapped to the outside of the pack. Such as it should be in Day Z. Leave stuff you don't need "right now" at a "base camp", then scout around for supplies. When changing "base camp", then you've got to do an inventory shuffle to carry everything. Also, carry light. IRL, anything that can be strapped on the outside of the backpack is carried in that fashion, and anything that is empty gets stuff stuffed into it. Generally, I store my food inside of my cooking pot. I also wouldn't carry a honking humongous metal tripod to set up a pot on: I would make one in the field out of sticks, or balance the pot on some rocks. As for choosing between certain items and "valuable things" like the Ghillie.....that is kind of the POINT. You shouldn't be able to wear a Ghillie AND have everything you need. The Devs changed clothing "size" so small shirts and such only take up one slot. If anything, they should remove the clothings capability to store things when inside another object, to represent the clothing being folded/rolled/squished up to conserve space. Much better than before. As for your Ghillie conundrum, make a "hide" beforehand: stash water and opened cans of food in the spot you want to hide before you get there.
  25. Nix on the last two. Bow-making is hard, and realistically beyond the knowledge or capabilities of us as a survivor.
