Until they miss because of rifle dexterity, then someone with almost any other weapon introduces their face to the ground. Can you use a long rifle effectively "firing from the hip" in close quarters? Sure. Is it probable, or likely? Not really. This is why battle rifles, and eventually, assault rifles, had bayonets. You generally don't try to shoot them if they get within stabbing range, it is too awkward.

Full auto weapons have nothing to do with Cernarus atmosphere, nor survival lifestyle

Exactly. I have ZERO problems with there being "heavily armed militias" in Day Z. What do you think would happen? The shit would hit the fan, and people would organize, for defense, for trade, for safety. It is "human nature" (as much as I hate that prase) What I would like to see, is the "heavily armed militias" defending their own locations: fortified compounds, wells (which really could be cut back in number), trading centers, farming communes. Think about it: players run across a fortified farming commune. This location is defended by a clan, who protect the complex in return for a cut of the "profits" (food, trade goods, etc) of the traders, farmers, and industries. They have a still, to make moonshine, which in turn powers a generator in order to run a makeshift hospital, some light industry (bullet presses, food processors, metal shaping, etc), and just provide light. The clan also sponsors independent "water merchants", who draw water from the well and sell it to less-fortunate compounds (would be awesome to see if/when "standing water" in the environment makes you SEVERELY ill, and 90% of the wells in Chernarus are removed) See people? THAT IS HOW CIVILIZATION WORKS. Now, I am not saying that this would be all "peachy-keen, puppies-and-rainbows". Bandits can raid the caravans going to the compound, while the clan attempts to defend them. They are successful, but start enacting draconian measures to guarantee future security (no "outside" weapons allowed, traders have to have "papers", demanding bigger and bigger cuts from traders and farmers, etc). Some of the traders and farmers get disgruntled as a result of this treatment, and leave to go form their own commune. The original clan, infuriated as a result of losing profit, declare war on the new commune. etc etc etc. Realistic, fun gameplay, that also prompts people working together. -
Note that there are alternate ways of powering a generator: wind turbines (made from scrap), a water turbine (made from scrap, located along one of the small rivers in Chernarus), hell, even human-powered dynamos would work (take a bicycle, remove the rear wheel, hook it up to the internal electromagnet [or just make one, using copper wire and iron rods]) Capture bambis and use them as slave labor on bicycle-dynamos.

.....Nah. I've never had that problem. Either they give themselves away by trying to shoot through the window and clipping the building geometry, or one of my clan-mates with an AK-pattern assault rifle takes them out while I stalk the side-streets with the eyes of a tiger.

No, we didn't. We are only at that point because the devs have not implemented more "modern" things yet, like generators, electricity, etc, all of which are viable (and valuable) in a situation similar to Day Z In reality, the "anarchy stage" (which Day Z is emulating) of societal collapse would be over with "relatively" quickly. After a couple of weeks, people would start to band together and form communities for safety-in-numbers and division-of-labor. With communities come everything associated with "society": organized militias, division of labor into various organized industries, and yes, organized trade. (Notice how much the word "organized" is used). There is little stopping you in-game from growing corn, distilling ethanol, and using that ethanol to power a generator in order to light up a trading post/farming commune....other than the fact that the mechanics for it isn't in-game yet. We weren't knocked back down the technological ladder, just (temporarily) prevented from moving up it. Granted, making/maintaining advanced technology (like planes, helicopters, cars, advanced medical gear, etc) without international trade would be extremely difficult at best, and next-to-impossible on average, but a generator, some rigged lights, an ethanol still, and a bullet press isn't exactly high technology. Moonshine would be a commodity in a PSC-region, due to the sheer number of uses. Hell, electrical power in and of itself could potentially be the "basis"" of currency. "This coin minted from recovered copper (useful for making electrical wires) is worth 30 minutes of electricity. This coin minted from recovered gold (potentially found in all the busted-up desktop computers we see in residential areas) is worth a full day of electricity." Boom, an actual currency system that works, based off of something that will ALWAYS have value. I prefer moonshine as the basis of exchange, though.

Give me one of these, and I can kill EVERYTHING But, back to topic.... Automatics, shotguns, and other close-range weapons have pretty much always been "better" than sniper rifles, if just for sheer functionality. With an assault rifle, you can blaze away at close-quarters, then throw an ACOG and a Bipod onto it and make snapshots from 500 meters (I've done it) "Snipers" are powerful, yes, but MUCH more situational than other firearms.
-
Actually, you can make electronic components out of gold and other precious metals. There is a severe health problem in China with people burning computer parts to get the gold off the chips and circuits, so they can sell it back to companies.

I remember the DAO-12 from Battlefield 3. Give me Slugs and the Extended Magazine, and I could turn an entire team into blood. LOVE ME SOME SHOTGUNS

"Snipers have almost always been the best way to go".... Hahahaha HAHAHAHAHAHA No, the overwhelming majority of "snipers" of this game just tend to have an extremely over-exaggerated view of themselves. Hell, my clan has two snipers, both very good at what they do. They will be the first ones to admit that they tend to not get as many kills as others, and "Overwatch" usually means "watching for movement and keeping an eye on the assault teams flanks". The guys who get the most kills? The guys with the assault rifles and shotguns, deep "in the shit". Of course, we also die more often than they do, but "tactical movement" is a constantly-evolving skill, and a large portion of our deaths occur due to shit-tastic desync and related shenanigans. In my 612 hours of playing the standalone, I've gotten killed by a "sniper" ONCE, and never at long range. It was in Berezino, and the guy nailed me with a Mosin from the North Apartments. I was by the Police Station, and only slowed down because I was turning around a fence. It was a 120 meter shot, something easily possible with an assault rifle. I've been standing still, and had a "sniper" miss me at about 600 meters. While the shots above my head definitely kept me suppressed, I was able to relay his position to a team-mate, who flanked up to him and used a shotgun to send him to meet his maker. I am willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of deaths in Day Z occur within 50 meters or less, in the cities (urban warfare!) At that range, an assault rifle or, preferentially, a shotgun, will kill you faster and easier than a Mosin, unless the Mosin has the "drop" on you. And, with my clan using two "overwatch" guys, enemy snipers tend to not get the drop on us, especially since they apparently refuse to move after shooting from the same, tired old "sniper spots". All it takes is us hearing the report of the Mosin, and our Overwatch guys sweep the treelines and the "well known sniper spots", and we will 9.9 times out of 10, find some guy in a Ghillie suit lying in the same old bush. Mosin Nagants (especially with scopes mounted): situational weapons Assault rifles: "bread and butter" of combat. Due to the ranges at which most combat takes place at, I would argue for shotguns to be placed into the "bread and butter" category as well. Maybe a bit more specialized than assault rifles, with less "possible" range, but arguably MUCH more effective in urban warfare. Give me a magazine-fed automatic shotgun with slugs and mounted bayonet, and I will show you a weapon that I would pick every time.

Yep, and many of those people suffer from intestinal parasites and assorted infections. -

In reality. shotguns would probably be the most "effective" firearm to use in a situation like Day Z, as opposed to a single-caliber rifle. A smoothbore, interchangable shotgun can fire buckshot, birdshot, slugs, flares, beanbags, etc, all with varied purpose. Slugs are for killing things at range, birdshot is for birds and other small game (and making "wax slugs"), buckshot is for hunting larger game and self defense, flares are for lighting things up, beanbags are for knocking things out, etc. Plus, shotshells are particularly easy to reload, and can be varied in powder charge to suit varied situations -

Not just toxic, but it is all-but-guaranteed to pass along whatever intestinal parasites you have to the rest of your community. -

Pretty much. I am willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of fights in DayZ occur within 50 meters or less (urban, military bases). At those ranges, the shotguns ANNIHILATE generally anything that wanders in front of you. Case in point, last night me and some of my mates got into some shit in Berezino, by the lumber yard. We came across a group of 4 dupers (we knew they were dupers because they all had on the same gear, with tricked-out AKM's and M4's). I flanked around through the shipping containers, by the office building, and came up on one of them. He sprayed at me with the AKM, missing all the while. (the bullets spanging off the shipping crates make me feel like I was in an action movie!), while all I had to do was center the MP-133 on his torso and fire. He got hit across his entire body, from his feet to his head, and went down like a sack of bricks. Now, granted, I picked up the tricked-out AKM and 3 drum mags he had, but I still kept my sawed-off IZH for.....close quarters. The various shotguns have to be my favorite weapons in Day Z. If only they would add more shells, like slugs, flares, beanbags, "wax slugs", etc. -
I would really love it if the devs include something like a multi-tool, encapsulating all the functions of a knife, a can opener, an awl (leather sewing kit), and a pair of pliers. A good multi-tool ( I prefer Gerber) is one of the integral parts of my survival kit, and it is probably the part that gets used the most.

No, you don't. Play smarter, or run away -
I agree. South Zagoria (the region of Chernarus we play in) is TINY.

There is a LOT of grammatical mistakes and spelling errors in-game. It is rather funny to see them sometimes....

When will the Sway be fixed?
Whyherro123 replied to GhostSlayer (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Nope. Automatic weapons should still have a chance to jam, especially when fired in fully-cyclic fashion. Should "pristine" gear have a lower chance of jamming, due to the weapon being cleaner? Of course. But there should never be a jam-free firearm, unless the weapon is literally incapable of jamming, like a break-open double-barrel shotgun or a revolver. So, it should feasibly go (in order of jam "potentiality", from lowest to highest. Factor in firearm "condition" and the chances for jams/malfunctions increases): jam free firearms: double barrel shotgun, revolver, Longhorn, Blaze (due to the ammunition either not being "cycled" by the firearm, or being extracted by the user as opposed to automatic action)user-dependent firearms: double-barrel shotgun, all bolt-action firearms, lever action repeater (the "cycling" and extraction of cartridges is prompted by the user, through muscle action)Automatic firearms fired on semi-auto: all automatic pistols, all assault rifles, all SMGs, the Sporter, etc (the weapon automatically cycles in fresh cartridges and extracts spent ones. This means the process can be impeded by gas/deposit buildup)Automatic firearms fired on full-auto: as above, but taken up to eleven.NOTE: jams aren't really the end of the world. You just yank the charging handle to eject the jammed round, or, failing that, remove the magazine, eject the jammed round, and load the magazine again. And if you want to severely lessen the chances of jamming in the first place, clean your firearm regularly and fire in semi-auto or short bursts rather than "spray n' pray". Problem solved, with numerous nods to realism and authenticity. -

I don't agree with the OP in the sense that IRL, there was over 10 million AKM made, 15 million SKS carbines, etc. ANd those are just the "official" Soviet numbers, not the shitty knockoffs produced by a Satellite state like Chernarus. Not including the fact that, according to ARMA 2, the region of Chernarus we play in just underwent a pretty heavy civil war. Both parties (The Chernarus Defense Force, and the Chedaki) definitely made weapon-and-ammunition stockpiles. So, yeah, I have no problem with there being automatic rifles in-game. What I do have a problem with, however, is how goddamned easy it is to get an automatic rifle, and to get OODLES AND OODLES of ammunition and magazines for them. In my mind, there would be a good number of rifles, but the stocks of ammunition for them would be severely depleted, as there is now no-one tor replenish them, nor a factory to produce more bullets. Same thing with magazines; you can scope a couple of military bases out, and come out with 75rnd drums and other magazines. So, make ammo and magazines hard to find, and make firearms jam when fired on full-auto. Problem solved -

The Soviet doctrine called them "snipers", but they were actually more like modern day "Designated Marksmen". Designated Marksmen usually use an accurized version of their countries Service rifle, fitted with various optics, and operate as a member of their squad/unit, as opposed to a sniper that uses a personalized and purpose-built bolt-action, and operates from a fixed location and with a specially-trained spotter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_marksman -

1) If you are sprinting through a grass-covered/root-strewn field or hillside, then yes, you should have the possibility to sprain/break your ankle. Don't want that to happen? Walk. Easy fix, and it just might slow down the constantly-sprinting playerbase. 2) Don't want to catch malaria (even though malaria is mostly a tropical/semi-tropical disease)? Stay out of the swamps, and stay within/impregnate your clothing with campfire smoke, or use bugspray. I do agree with you on this, however. 3) In reality, those with chronic diseases requiring regular medication would be among the first to die. Sad but true. So, your point is not very applicable to Day Z, especially if the game takes place even a couple of months 'after the end", as insulin has to be kept refrigerated. 4) Yes, firearms jam, which I would LOVE to see implemented. To avoid this, fire in semi-auto or short bursts, and clean your weapon regularly. 5)Yeah, and? It is realistic. Sometimes you just get a shit draw. Pull the charging handle and try again. Problem solved. Remember, Day Z was originally intended to be the "anti-game". The devs are trying for as much realism as possible, and "authenticity" when not. Sprinting everywhere, with fully-automatic-firearms-that-never-jam blazing? Not all that authentic. -
I actually cannot WAIT for diseases, both infections and water and food-borne diseases. I cannot wait for the crying on the forums when people drink straight from ponds and rivers, then die like animals. Eat food that is slightly undercooked? Spend hours in-game with severe diarrhea and vomiting, leading to life-threatening dehydration, with all that implies. Forget to clean a wound? The wound gets severely infected due to sweat and dirt (from the playerbase sprinting everywhere), and you have to deal with the effects, which may not be treatable with just a couple of the in-game oral antibiotics. Instead, you would have to search long and hard for an antibiotic IV drip.....maybe from a Red Cross Quarantine Camp, which is CRAWLING with hundreds (if not thousands, realistically) of infected due to the patient overflow? If anything, I would like 90% of the "water pumps" (you know what I am referring to) removed from the game. It removes a critical aspect from survival if safe, potable water is next-to-guaranteed in every town.
-
You do realize that that is eminently possible in real life? If you drink a whole bunch of water all at once, your stomach will be full, but you won't be hydrated. Same thing with food: eat a whole bunch of food at once, and your stomach will be full (and therefore, you won't be hungry), but you won't be energized until you actually metabolize the food/water. As for in Day Z, try sitting down, in some shade, and drinking the water slowly. Same thing with food. That way, you process/metabolize the food/water, and don't get "stuffed". By jogging/running, you are heating up and "using" water faster. All of this IS a bug, but in my opinion, a pretty awesome one. More realistic that eating a pound of rice and a liter of water then sprinting around, anyways.

Damn straight. In real life, I am confident that I (essentially an untrained civilian) could sprint across a field a couple of times, pick up a rifle, and make a shot on a target out to 100 yards. Will I be pinpoint-in-the-bullseye accurate? No, but I also would not be swaying around like a drunk after 6 pints at the pub. If anything, our breathing should have more of an effect on sway, as in -up-and-down motion.
